Trading Stanton to the Yankees was a shit move by lifetime Yankee Jeter. Destroys his own franchise and fucks the rest of the AL East in the process.

I don't really like how Miami played the Cards and the Giants, either. Stanton was never going to either team, but Miami strings along both teams for 2 weeks. I guess if the Cards make a deal for either Yelich or Ozuna, then you could argue that their negotiations with Miami on Stanton was really just a jump start for either of those guys.
Cards need a bat. I keep hearing Donaldson, which the Auburn fan in me loves, and because it would also make Buzzy root for the Cardinals, at least 3 ABs a game, but how much juice does he have left in the tank? 2, maybe 3 seasons? Not sure he's a long term solution.

The Marlins biggest problem is not its bats.... it is pitching. Getting rid of Stanton was necessary to make room to find some pitchers. In the short run it will hurt but long run it is better for the club.

I used to watch the games religiously. Braves. Cubs. Red Sox. I bet I watched 150 Bravo games in 1991.
Then the Braves were good for a long time. I watched less. Watched the Sox in 04. Loved me some Manny.
The constant roster changes have sort of ruined it for me. I don't want to cheer for a rent-a-uniform hack.

Speaking of the Braves, an all-to-early look at the roster indicates the purging is most likely complete and they're ready to build back with youth....relatively speaking.
I get what's going on and I can't say I disagree with it, because it's been the recipe for success recently for several franchises like the Cubs, Stros, Indians etc. After dismantling the roster, they spent the last couple of years trying to bring the young guys along while dotting the roster with old(er) veterans to kind of keep it together. Guys like Brandon Phillips, Nick Markakis, Matt Kemp, Bartolo Colon, Nick Swisher and AJ Pierzmininzki-ski have all come though, knowing it was just for a cup of coffee. Markakis is still on roster, however.
But damn, I look at the current roster and the only guys having proven anything are Freddie Freeman and maybe Ender Enciarte. The rest of them just make you face palm at the thought of another season 20+ games under .500. Julio Tehran is the only pitcher who has proven he can get you 14-15 wins. After that....yeesh! The outfield has Markakis, Enciarte and 2 guys I don't think I've ever heard of. The infield is Freeman, Dansby Swanson and a bunch of guys named Gomez or Albies or Santana or some shit. Catchers are decent but both are 35+ years old.
The Marlins went fire sale this offseason. I don't think their fans are too happy about it and shouldn't be. They had some damn fine, young talent. But did the Braves try and pick up Yelich or Ozuna or any of them? Nope. I'm hoping they've figured out which of these guys are going to blow up and make the Braves contenders again. Maybe that's the case and they're all looking forward to the season. But, I imagine it's been close to 30 years since I looked at their roster and had less hope than I do now.

Just took a walk over to the bank a block from the office. (That wheelbarrow of cash was heavier than I thought.) It's 77 degrees. The sun is shining for the first time in a week. Spring training games start a week from today. At least the Braves do. Despite the fact that we'll suck again, I'm getting a little pumped. Maybe my American League team, the Red Sox can take down the damn Yankee$.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the Bravos hottest prospect, Ronald Acuna (Matata) can do. Only 20 years old but he tore shit up across the minors last season.

This morning, the local paper editorial had a note about how ticket sales are down this year for the redbirds. Apparently, after (by Cards standards) sucking in 16 and 17, and not doing a damn thing about it in the off season is catching up to them.

I looked out and said WTH is that? I stepped off and damn if I was looking right into WF. They said it was time to take off again and I was like, Noooooooooooo.......

Just can't see anyone out talenting (Is that a word?) the Nats. The Mets still have what looks like one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, but they've really underperformed recently.

Braves play the Red Sox in September. Will be there to watch a World Series preview.
Will be my first trip to the new ballpark in upper Atlanta. I was there a couple of years ago when they were building it. Have done Fenway several times. Went to watch the Red Sox play at old Yankee Stadium in 2004 before we knew they were going to be the team that broke the curse. Pedro pitched that day.
You know, when you think about it, I've lived a pretty blessed life.

The Braves are most likely going to take their Spring Training suckage straight through the regular season. I'm resigned to that. But, I am anxious to see if this kid, Ronald Acuna, who is the Braves' top prospect, makes some noise this year. He's started picking it up the last few games and went 3-3 today against the Yank Me's.

Jar, I think the Cards look pretty stout with the line up. With the addition of Ozuna, they look like they can have some pop, especially at the top of the line up. If you can put Dexter Fowler, Paul DeJong (Is it Paul?), Matt Carpenter and Marcell Ozuna up there, along with Molina, that's pretty stout. My question is where the pitching is coming from? Wainright is getting long in the tooth. Wacha has plenty of experience but honestly, I don't recognize another pitcher on the roster. Maybe I just didn't pay attention more real gooder last year. Who should be on the bump?

I think the promising young guy is Luke Weaver. But... rookie. So you don't know what you're going to get.
I mean, they were in a bidding war for Price a few years ago, and so I can't blame them for trying. Lots of teams lose bidding wars to the Red Sox. But aside from that, who do you go get? What FA would you sign? Arietta? I love the guy, but he's not worth the multi-year deal you'll have to fork over. Lynn, same thing.
Now, I'm impressed with the pitching coach the Cards managed to hire away from the Nats, so lets see what he can do.

Not a lot of arms left in the free agency pool. And I agree on Areola. He's 32 already, which is not that old. But, any long term deal would probably wind up wasting a ship load of cash on the back side. I'd love to have him on the Bravos staff right now, though. We've just got a whole lot of yeeeesh!

Speaking of free agents, you've got Mike Moustakas and Carlos Gonzales just hanging out there. Gonzales kind of dropped off in production last year but in 2016, he hit .300 with 25 HR and 100 RBI. Moustakas is a 3rd baseman and is the Royals all time HR leader. I know a certain team that could use either or both these guys. Problem is, that team's name is nowhere to be found in possible suitors. The damn tearing down process is long since over. Time to start adding some serious pieces to the rebuild. Unless you're trying to be shitty again.

But same thing with the batters that we said about the pitchers. Are those guys worth the 20m+ they are asking? Maybe for a year or two. But you're going to be paying 20+ when these guys are hitting .240 and struggling to hit 15 HR when they get to year 4 or 5 of a deal. See Pujols, Albert.

A little payroll bitchin' and moanin'. I'm referencing the Cubs, Cards and Braves because those are about the only teams discussed in this forum. War Eagle needs to get his Walker Texas Ranger ass in gear. May throw in some Red Sachs because that's my adopted anti-Yankee AL club.
The Cubbies are making it rain to the tune of about $160 million. The least bang for the buck goes to the Cubs for paying Jason Wayward $21.5 per. With incentives, he could earn over $28m. But it's pretty clear he won't do that. John Lester and Yu are pulling down about $22m apiece. Fair return on today's market. They picked up Ben Zobrist for a cool $16m, while Kris Bryant is raking in just under $11m.
For the Cards, the two snaggletoothed vets are leading the way with Yadi makig $20m and A. Wainwright a close 2nd at $19.5. Dexter, Matt & Marcell come in at $14.5m..$13.5m and $9m respectively. Again, probably solid payouts in today's market. The Cards are a thunderstorm behind how much the Cubs are making it rain with a total payroll of $141m. Which brings me to a point or question. $17m of that is "Retained Salary" for a guy named Mike Leake. I sort of remember the name. But here's what's weirder...
The Braves are paying a retained salary of $16.5m to Adrian Gonzales. Okay, unless the Braves signed him during that year and a half I was in rehab for meth and sex addiction, I don't recall the man ever playing for Atlanta. Was that some crazy trade shit when they got Matt Kemp from the Dodgers? Hell, I think AG is out of baseball. But ATL is sending him a $16.5m check? WTF???
Anywho, the "rebuilding" Braves are paying 4 guys $10m plus. Freddie is making bank at $21m. Legit. But two of the guys are pitchers they got from the Dodgers in Scott Kazmir ($16m) and Brandon McCarthy ($13m). Nick Markakis is just above the $10m level. BTW, McCarthy is a pitcher who is 9 games under .500 for his career. Kazmir is a few games over .500. Not solid in today's market. Total payroll is $87m. So, you're not paying for talent and spending too much on questionable at best talent. Enjoy your 75 wins.

Yadier Molina has said when his contract expires in 2020, he will retire. He'll have a number retired for sure at Busch, but honestly, you guys think he's a HOF? Granted, I have cardinal colored glasses on, and I think he was the catcher of the decade for the last 10 years, but his offense is no where near people like Bench or Pudge (Bench .267/389hr/2048 hits/1376rbi, Pudge .296/311hr/2844 hits/1332, Yadi .284/126hr/1730 hits/785rbi) Should get to 2000 hits, but I don't see him getting to 200 HR or 1000rbi. If he gets in, it will be because of how he calls a game and his defense, although he doesn't have the golden gloves that Bench or Pudge have (Bench with 10, Pudge with 13, Yadi with 8).

Or 0-162 if you're a Braves fan. I just looked at their 40 man roster. Out of the 15 pitchers, I honestly couldn't name more than 2 projected starters. Have no idea who half of them are. The one hot prospect that's supposed to be the #1 prospect in all of baseball, Ronald Acuna, got sent down to Gwinnett.
Oh, and it doesn't give you much cause for encouragement when 2018 preview show has the GM acknowledging that they're just using this year to see who is MLB material. Who is going to stick with the club. Unfortunately, the Braves are in their 3rd year of doing just that. They did exactly ZERO in trades or the Free Agent market to help this team. Frick!

I think bunting is just an afterthought in MLB. You rarely see it and when you do, they look like they've never practiced it in their life. And managers would never dream of making a high profile player sacrifice himself in any situation.
Admittedly, Johan Camargo did try to suicide bunt Ozzie Albies home when Albies reached third. But it was a weak attempt where he was trying to drag bunt and beat out the throw. Albies is one of the fastest guys in the game. Just square up and get it down.

Braves start a series against the Metrosexuals in NY tonight. Pitcher will be making his MLB debut. 6'5" righty, Mike Soroka. Only 20 years old. I guess Albies, Acuna Marada and Soroka, the youth movement is starting fo sho.

Cards take another tight win against the Pale Hose while the Cubbies get Rocked. Red Birds in first with the Baby Bears a half game out. Early still, but fun. Braves seal another series win and take over first with a 7-0 shutout on the road against the Metrosexuals. Currently 6-3 on the road trip with a matinee in NY tomorrow. 18-11 overall.
I know it's just 2 games, but the Nats have had unprotected butt secks with the Pirates. Pounding them 2 games in a row. I hope they haven't done been woke. Early on, it looks like the Red Sox and Yankees as the class of the AL. Sox are talented as hell top to bottom. The Yank Me's just fucking wall bang 1-9. That's going to be fun to watch.
Despite my "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen" blues I've been singing, my guys are playing some damn good ball in every single phase of the game. Realistically, too young to carry it for the long haul, but about 30 games in, this team is worth tuning in to.

I'm not sold on the Cardinals, to be honest. I don't trust our bullpen. The win yesterday was nice, but when your offense gets jump started by Carlos Martinez hitting his first career home run, something is wrong.
Cards are sitting 5 games over .500, but have 7 wins against the Reds, and 2 against the White Sox. So I wonder are they just beating up bad teams? Seems likely after getting swept by the Bucs over the weekend (and after taking a 3 run lead into the bottom of the 9th on Friday, and losing the game in extra innings, St Louis was outscored 12-2 over the course of the series). That's a bit frustrating.
I suspect that come late Sunday night, we will have some questions answered about how good St Louis really is, as the Cubs come to town.

Good read from Paul Sullivan in today's Chicago Tribune. Tells me both teams are playing for first place this weekend while neither has sniffed of their potential.
s Cardinals (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/st.-louis-cardinals-ORSPT000027-topic.html) manager Mike Matheny addressed reporters in the dugout before Wednesday afternoon’s game at Busch Stadium, a group of curious onlookers stood a few feet away pointing their smartphones in his direction.
It was just another example of the ongoing encroachment of fans in the baseball workplace, as teams try to squeeze every ounce of revenue they can from customers, whether it interferes with the team or not.
Matheny didn’t appear at all bothered by the eavesdropping fans, and if they were able to hear his current message on Cardinals baseball, it was probably good for the organization.
So what was the message?
That this was one of the best teams Matheny has managed, in spite of statistical evidence suggesting otherwise.
Matheny was simply doubling down on a bold statement the previous night from Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/matt-carpenter-PESPT0015141-topic.html), who has struggled with a .167 average in the early going.
“I know I’m biased and people may not agree,†Carpenter said. “But this team has a chance to be one of the best ones I’ve played on in St. Louis, and that’s saying a lot.â€
It is saying a lot. Carpenter has been a Cardinal since 2011. In that time they’ve won one World Series (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/world-series-15007006-topic.html), lost another and been to four National League (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/national-league-15007002-topic.html) Championship Series.
Last year they finished out of the playoffs with an 83-79 record, and they began Thursday’s off day a half-game behind the first-place Brewers (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/milwaukee-brewers-ORSPT000016-topic.html) in the National League Central (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/national-league-central-ORSPT00000157-topic.html) before starting a three-game series Friday against the Cubs (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/).
The 17-12 record, however, is deceiving. The Cardinals are 7-0 against the Reds (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/cincinnati-reds-ORSPT000008-topic.html) and just completed a two-game sweep over the White Sox (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/), two teams in rebuilding mode.
They’re 8-12 against everyone else, and as of Thursday they were ranked 25th in hitting (.235), 19th in slugging percentage (.394) and 15th in runs scored (132). They’ve so far been carried by their starting pitching, which was fourth with a 3.23 ERA. The bullpen has been above average but already has six blown saves, along with the fourth most walks per nine innings (4.32) and fourth-fewest strikeouts per nine (2.00).
Carpenter’s lofty assessment of the Cardinals wasn’t unexpected. Every team tries to put a good spin on things, including the Cubs, who’ve been average at best over the first five weeks and bring a 16-12 record into St. Louis.
But no one on the Cubs has been comparing them favorably to their World Series team of 2016, which won 103 games.
“I’m saying the exact same thing (as Carpenter), 100 percent,†Matheny said. “I mean, you just look at the pieces and you look at how this team has kind of been playing without having everything clicking.
“We’ve talked about that, but it’s true. You look at the pen. You look at what are starters are capable of doing, and it’s a dangerous, deep lineup. I’ve said that before as well. I couldn’t agree more. I’m glad he’s thinking that and I hope every single one of those guys is thinking that. Because I think this could be one of the best teams I’ve ever been around.â€
Whether Cardinals fans are buying into the message is debatable. Matheny is not very popular these days, a byproduct of back-to-back seasons without a playoff berth.
And though Busch Stadium is usually filled with red-clad fans, thousands headed to the exits after the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the White Sox, missing the Cardinals’ ninth-inning comeback.
Other than Tommy Pham, the lineup hasn’t put much fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers. Carpenter said the Cardinals general manager, Michael Girsch, showed him stats that suggested he was “the most unlucky hitter in baseball,†and told him not to change anything.
“It felt good to hear that,†he said. Cubs first baseman Anthony “Rizzo and I were basically the same — the worst in baseball.â€
But Carpenter isn’t alone. New acquisition Marcel Ozuna, who was supposed to be the next big thing in St. Louis, has yet to step up, with a -0.2 WAR and a .591 OPS.
Dexter Fowler, the former Cubs center fielder now playing in right, has a .594 OPS and -0.4 WAR. In Wednesday’s game, Sox slugger Jose Abreu turned a routine single into a double by taking advantage of Fowler’s arm.
Fowler isn’t too worried about the slow start.
“I was off to one last year and had a career year,†he said. “Things like that happen. It’s unfortunate it’s at the beginning. If it was in the middle of the year, it’s like, ‘All right, he’s struggling a little bit.’â€
The Cubs have had a few problems of their own, including Rizzo’s slump, Yu Darvish (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/yu-darvish-PESPT0015190-topic.html)’s struggles and a general lack of consistency. Not even manager Joe Maddon (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/joe-maddon-PESPT0000011521-topic.html) can come up with a way to put a positive spin on Darvish’s troubles living up to his $126 million contract.
While this may be a series between two longstanding rivals that figure to battle it out for the division title, neither team seems to be hype-worthy at this point. Still, it’s Cubs-Cardinals, and you never know what’s in store when they get together.
“I’m looking forward to it,†Fowler said. “Anytime you can play guys in the division for first place, it’s going to be a good series.â€

The Cubs softened up the Marlins, who the Braves face next, with a 13-4 pounding. Both the Cards and Cubs have series they can make hay in coming up with the Birds going to San Diego and the Cubbies starting an intra-city series with the Pale Hose. Expect both to take series wins.
Funny how being somewhat competitive makes a season soooo much more interesting.

In checking the overall team pitching stats, the Cards, Cubs and Braves are all in the top 10. The Cardinals and Cubs come in at number 5 and 6 respectively with the Braves at #10. Here's the biggest issue for my team. The Braves have issued more walks than ANY team in MLB. By a good margin. Live arms out the ass. (With the exception of dumbass Peter Moylan's Aussie, submarine pitching bitch ass). But the bullpen especially, just keeps walking peeps.
However, if you can stay in the top 10 all season in pitching, which all 3 teams are, this could be damn fun.

Was off today so I got to watch several innings of the Braves/Cubs. Bravos held on for dear life with the Cubbies loading up the bases, down two in the 9th. Eeked out a 6-5 win with Kris Bryant flying out to left for the last out.
On a side note, the home plate umpire was teh super suxxors today. Even the Braves announcers were "complaining" when strikes should have been called on Braves hitters. Anyway, the two teams head back to the ATL for three.

Watching Wainwright labor was tough to take
It sure looked like Waino in the pictures — tall and scruffy and birds-on-the-bat across his proud chest — but there was one difference.
During Adam Wainwright’s rehab start in Springfield, one Monday ago, he wasn’t wearing No. 50.
They’d given him No. 36.
And it was as if he were branded by the number, his age, for everyone to see the reason Waino no longer was Waino. The No. 36 was red, but it might as well have been scarlet.
Wainwright got through the Class AA game, earning him a spot back in the Cardinals’ rotation, and the No. 50 back on his back.
By now, you’ve heard what happened next. Re-aggravated his right elbow during Sunday’s warm-ups. Didn’t have his stuff. Walked six. Paltry velocity.
Maybe he’ll bounce back from this injury, too. But Sunday was the first day I wondered if he’ll ever be back to an every-fifth-day quality starter. Tough sentence to write. But honestly, this doesn’t even have to do with Jack Flaherty or Alex Reyes. This has to do with the fact that it’s getting to the point where it’s always something — an injury, an aggravation, trouble locating, trouble finding speed, or some deflating combination of all of it.
And then, this great pitcher is reduced to turning his pitches into science fair projects, just to make it through a few starts. How long can that last? He can give you a good start here and there. The man beat the Cubs earlier this season, if you recall. But can the 36-year-old string strong starts together, all summer? Maybe his body will prove that he can again, but how many rough starts must St. Louis endure to find that out?
Before we go any farther here, two things must be asserted. One, Adam Wainwright is a Cardinals legend. A red coat. His accomplishments are stitched into Cardinals lore like lace into the baseballs he once made dance. Two, he’s valiant. A Georgia bulldog. Regardless of what happens, no one can say he didn’t push himself to return. He cares so much about this team, this uniform and the men who wear it.
Just a week ago, manager Mike Matheny captured it well, talking about the leadership of both Yadier Molina and Wainwright, the battery that ignites this generation.
“I see Yadi having conversations with other people, Waino going and having conversations with guys completely out of their lane,†the skipper said. “Could be a position player that Waino will go talk to. Those kind of things are priceless for us as a club and for a culture that we believe in. Those two guys in particular are a huge part of that. They’re very intentional, without any prompting. They see something and they’ll say, ‘What’s happening right there ... does not line up with our tradition and winning baseball in St. Louis, and I need to do something about that.’
“When you have that in real time, you’re very, very blessed.â€
But when it comes to starting baseball games, you can’t victory lap as a starting pitcher. It’s the nature of what makes the position so important — you can’t hide a starting pitcher like you could a power forward in basketball, or even an aging slugger in baseball. A starting pitcher is the fulcrum of a game.
And almost like the script of a sports movie, the Cardinals have the next stud starters ready to go. Flaherty will start Tuesday at Minnesota. And Reyes is rehabbing his way up each “A,†playing in Peoria on Monday night. The former No. 1 prospect in the game will start for St. Louis this summer. Austin Gomber, John Gant, Dakota Hudson, Michael Mayers, they’re also all itching to start, itching to star.
After Wainwright’s Sunday start, in which he couldn’t get through three innings, he told reporters in San Diego about a desire. He wants to be “a force down the stretch.†A fair and realistic assessment. Maybe, just maybe, he can rehab like the dickens and return, in some capacity, down the stretch. Maybe Waino could be a reliever, eating up an inning with the need of just two biting pitches, instead of forcing three or four? It’s fun to get optimistic, but one wonders if that is countered by being realistic. On one hand, there is so much time between now and September. On the other hand, with a 36-year-old ballplayer, time is the enemy.
Sunday seemed like it could be sunny. The Padres aren’t that good of a hitting team. And the Cards clearly saw something in Waino’s Springfield start that gave them confidence. It was Mother’s Day, and there was a tape of Adam on the broadcast, wide smile, wishing his mother and wife the happiest of days.
At the end of the start, it was heartbreaking to watch — Wainwright on the dugout bench, Matheny talking to him. Broadcasters Dan McLaughlin and Al Hrabosky let the moment breathe. They didn’t talk. And the absence of sound made it the more poignant. You didn’t have to hear what was said or hear analysis of what might’ve been said. You just had to look at this image to know that it’s no longer the same, and it might not ever be the same for No. 50, now 36.

The Police Department in Yarmouth, Mass., was mourning the death of one of its officers, Sean Gannon, last month when a bouquet of flowers arrived at the station bearing a card with five unexpected words: “From the New York Yankees.â€
Officer Gannon was shot and killed while serving a warrant in neighboring Marstons Mills, a tiny village in Cape Cod, where the Yankees are considered bitter rivals.
“I’m a die-hard Red Sox fan, and my first reaction was, ‘Call the delivery guy and tell him to take them back,’†said Frank Frederickson, the Yarmouth police chief. “I say that in jest, of course. That is a class move, and it meant a lot to us. All the guys came down and wanted to see it. They were like, ‘Are you kidding me?’â€
Reactions were similar at the sheriff’s department in Lebanon, Ind., last month and at a home in Fargo, N.D., in 2016, and dozens of other locations from Maine to Alaska. For the past three years, the Yankees have been quietly sending flowers to the families and police departments of slain law enforcement officers across the country.
In most of the places, the immediate question was similar: Why would the Yankees send flowers to us? Chief Frederickson initially wondered if it was because Aaron Judge, the team’s slugging outfielder, had played in the 2012 Cape Cod Baseball League season, including many games in Yarmouth.
Actually, the gesture grew from something the Yankees have done for decades — sending flowers to the funerals of officers killed in the New York metropolitan area. But one day in 2015, Sonny Hight, a former detective in the New York Police Department who is a Yankees vice president and the chief security officer, heard about a police officer killed in another state. Mr. Hight said he did not now remember the episode, the city or the date, only that he was moved to act.
“I just thought, hey, this guy deserves to be recognized for his sacrifice,†Mr. Hight said. “We should at least send some flowers acknowledging it.â€
The start of the nationwide effort in 2015 coincided with rising national protests against the police after a series (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/08/13/us/ferguson-missouri-town-under-siege-after-police-shooting.html) of deadly shootings (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/08/us/south-carolina-officer-is-charged-with-murder-in-black-mans-death.html)involving officers (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/28/us/baltimore-freddie-gray.html), but Mr. Hight said there was no political agenda behind the gesture. It was, and remains, merely an expression of sympathy.
George Steinbrenner surely would have approved. Steinbrenner, the former Yankees owner who died in 2010, had a personal affinity for law enforcement, and for decades many of the team’s security personnel have been hired from posts at the N.Y.P.D. and the F.B.I.
In 1982, Steinbrenner helped create the Silver Shield Foundation (http://www.silvershieldfoundation.org/), which provides money for educational support to the families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty, and the flowers are an extension of the same ethos.
The goal of the project is to deliver flowers to the funerals or station houses of every officer killed in action nationwide, but it is difficult to keep pace. In 2016, 64 police officers were killed by gunfire in the United States, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page (https://www.odmp.org/). Thirteen others were killed by vehicles; one was stabbed to death.
In 2017, 46 more were shot and killed. There have been 27 such deaths so far this year.
The Yankees’ process for sending flowers is informal. Usually it begins after Mr. Hight or someone else in the organization hears about an officer killed in the line of duty. It is then brought to the attention of Todd Letcher, a former F.B.I. agent who serves as the Yankees’ executive director for stadium security. Mr. Letcher researches the case and passes the information to Debbie Nicolosi, a Yankees employee since 1973, who finds the names and addresses, and arranges for the flowers and cards to be delivered.
“We don’t even know how many we have sent,†Ms. Nicolosi said. “It can sometimes be as many as twice a week.â€
In Lebanon, Ind., last month, officers at the Boone County Sheriff’s Office received a bouquet of flowers from the Yankees shortly after their colleague Jacob Pickett was shot to death (https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2018/03/08/what-we-know-shooting-deputy-jacob-pickett/396811002/) on March 2.
Maj. Tony Harris, one of Deputy Pickett’s colleagues and a fan of the Chicago Cubs, was so moved by the gesture that he said he went online and bought a Yankees cap and a sweatshirt and put his name and badge number on the back of the shirt.
“They reached out all the way from New York, and with everything they’ve got going on they think of us?†Major Harris said. “For them to do that was incredibly classy.â€
While the flowers usually arrive without warning or explanation beyond the message on the card, the gesture can elicit strong emotions. Two years ago in Kansas City, Kan., Capt. Robert Melton was shot (http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article90544392.html) while trying to apprehend a suspect. Captain Melton, 46, had three children, and his girlfriend was expecting another child; their daughter, Eloise, was born five months after his death.
Upon receiving the Yankees’ flowers, Terry Zeigler, the police chief, replied with a letter of thanks, one of the many that Mr. Hight keeps in his office.
Chief Zeigler said in an interview that Captain Melton was the second officer killed in Kansas City in a matter of three months that year, and that before he died he had been asked to draw up guidelines for the parades for fallen officers. He wrote them and placed them in a binder.
“He came into my office, put it on the shelf and said, ‘I hope we never have to use that again,’†Chief Zeigler said. “Unfortunately, we did. But when you’re going through the grieving process and you get that kind of support and kindness from people on the other side of the country, that is meaningful.
“Unfortunately, it keeps happening.â€

Rimma-nissing here a bit. As a kid, I was a Yankees fan because my dad loved them. But, that was back in a time when money wasn't even a part of any discussion about pro sports. Names like Lou Piniella, Thurman Munson, Mickey Rivers, Craig Nettles, Catfish Hunter etc. were why you tuned in. Those players were the face of your team. Seems like they were together for more than a decade. Then, it all changed. Individual and team payrolls were published and you started seeing players making decisions and changing teams strictly for money. And eventually, the Yankees started lapping everybody in the salary department. I remember when their payroll hit $100 million. I thought, that's enough for me. This is just a team of hired guns with players coming and going every year. But, that's the way of the sports world these days.
And the Red Sox are public enemy #2 in that department. Their goal seems to be to out-bid the Yankees every year for talent.

The Cards finally get one from the Twinkies, hanging 7 on them in Minnesota. Braves earned at least a split in the 4 game series with the Cubbies with a 4-1 win. All these games have been down to the last inning. Just an observation here, which may be way off. Despite 6 HR and 23 RBI's, I think Rizzo is part of the problem. He's hitting .202. Think about his production if the guy is just hitting a respectable .275-.280. This guy has 14 HR and 40 RBI's. Suddenly, all the close games go the Cubs way. Also, the guys around him get better pitches to hit. What say you, Buzz? Am I full of shitake...like always?
Pirates and Brewers sitting atop the Central, but as I seem to say each and every year, they'll hang around for a while, but no way they have the staying power to put it together for a full season. Still a Cubs/Cards division.

Someone always on base for the 3-4-5 big boppers. Lost art.

Didn't post over the weekend as I was tanning my fat in sunny Destin, Florida. A win tonight in Philly puts the Bravos at 29-18 and leading the division. But, everyone from the Braves to the Phillies, Nationals and Mets are playing well above .500 ball so it's anybody's division to take.
Cubbies got ass raped by the Indians tonight and last I saw, the Cards were down 3-1 at home to the Royals. Same situation in the Central. The Brew Crew, Cards, Pirates and Cubs are all well over .500 and only 3 games separate them all. The season is just a little over 30% or 372/950th of the way through. Still so early but like I've been saying, I'm having a blast with all our teams right there in the mix. I would have been totally happy with .500 ball right now with my expectations coming in.

The Bravos salvaged a game in Boston but may have lost their young stud, Ronald Acuna Jr. Twisted his knee horribly after beating out a ground ball. He did walk off but won't know the results of an MRI til tomorrow.
The 7-1 win puts them back in first with a 30-21 record. Cards handled the Buccos again and the Cubs have things well in hand against SF. The damn Brew Crew have built a 4 game cushion in the Central. I say it every year and I've already said it 3 times this year. They always start fast but will fade as the season wears on. Cubs/Cards.
The AL looks like the Red Sox, Yankees and Astros will be the boy dogs all season. Everyone else is struggling to stay at .500.

Was hoping my AL team, the Red Sox could take the series from the Yanks and somewhat deflate them with the Braves coming into NY for a series. Last I checked, the Yank Me's were up 9-0 and wall banging like hell. So much for that.
Break up the Reds. Playing their 3rd first place team in a row and handling their business in all 3 series. Jim Riggleman has them playing well right now. Beating the Brew Crew keeps the Cubbies and Cards right there. Even with a bad weekend, the Cards are 5 1/2 games out before the All Star break. That's a mini hot streak away from being in first.
Cleveland starting to put a little separation between them and the rest of the division. Slow, slow start but looking like the real deal now. Astros and Mariners still tight but no way the Stro's total package doesn't wind up running away in the end.
Gawt damn, so happy to still be this involved at the mid point in the season. There's a few givens, IMO. The BoSox and Yankees are the cream of the crop in the AL and probably all of baseball. And I truly believe the Stro's will wind up easily taking their division. Other than that, ain't nuthin' a given.

That game Saturday was everything I loathe about Mike Matheny.
And while I appreciate the optimism, Snags, we both know that the Cards will be lucky to finish with 85 wins.

I'll be damn'd. The Braves took game one in the Bronx on a homer by Ronald Acuna in the 12th or 13th or some shit. Watched the whole thing. Was worried they'd be overmatched but they stayed with them hit for hit, run for run. 4-0 on the current road trip. At some point, they might make me start believing. But, I'm gonna' continue to stay reserved.
Freddie Freeman has gone in the tank. He was around .340 a week or two ago. He went 0-5 tonight and is sitting about .310. But, everyone else seems to be doing enough to pick up the slack. Sean Newcomb goes for the Braves tomorrow and he's the one guy I feel good about this season.
BTW, the fucking Yankees are a bunch of beasts. Judge is 6'7' 282. Jee-Anne-Carlo-Stanton is 6'6" 245. Aroydis (sp?) Chapman was bringing every damn fastball up there at 102 to 104 m.p.h. Are you serious? 104???? Consistently???
"MY" Sox take down the Nats 4-3 in D.C. Hell of a road trip to start in New York, then go to Washington. Bryce Harper put one in the upper deck tonight. Dude is sick skrong!

Alright, so the Cards are kicking some Rattler ass on the road right now. They have 3 in Arizona and a series in San Fran (4) and then two against the White Sox in Chicago. Then, they return home to face the Reds for 3 before the All Star break. The Cubbies start a couple of home series against the Tigers (2) and the Reds for 3. They venture to the Liberal Left Coast for 3 at the Giants and then 3 against the S.D. Fathers before the break. My hope is that both teams wind it down with maybe some 8-3 finishes.
Following the All Star break, the Cards and Cubs start a series that should get the 2nd half off to a bang. Looking forward to it. Ought to be good.

All Star Break. Okay, my Braves at 10 games over .500 and essentially at the top the East? Nope. I never expected or predicted it. I think they have the pitching and hitting to hang for the most part. However, the East is wide freaking open. The Phillies? More improbable than the Braves. And the Nats continue to languish at .500 ball. Still anticipate the Nats taking control.
American League. My Sox. Yeah, go back and check 100 posts. MY Sox, are almost 40 games over .500. Yank Me's are 4.5 back at the break. Cleveland has slowly, but suddenly picked it up and by season's end could be dangerous as hell. This is crazy...the NL looks to be 3 team races to the finish in all divisions. If you'd told me back in April May June that the Cubbies would have the best record in the NL at the break, I would have laughed directly in yo face.

I just want a four horseman style pitching rotation. Good pitching beats good hitting 9 times out of 10.

And that’s where my beef with Matheny had been. Since Big Mac left, we’ve gotten worse in hitting every year. I thought he should have been fired two years ago. And I get loyalty, but you being loyal to this guy cost you your job.
If Carpenter, Pham, Wong, and Fowler were just within 10% of how they were hitting last year, we would at worse be a game within the cubs.
But a lot of things being said in StL this past weekend about how toxic the clubhouse had become. Apparently Fowler had blocked Matheny’s number, and they hadn’t spoken since May.

That's a feat that we'll never witness again. It's getting more and more rare just to get one 20 game winner, much less four on one team. Pitching has become so specialized and the way they're handled means that complete games are almost becoming a thing of the past.

Oh absolutely. You had confidence every time one of them took the mound. And they definitely could eat up the innings.
I read some quotes from Maddux years ago where he was talking about his pitching philosophy. He said he knew exactly where every hitter wanted it. (Not in the butt) Then he would throw it right there....but not quite right there, causing ground outs and pop ups. I imagine every time you had an at-bat against him, you'd come back to the dugout wondering why the hell you can't hit the guy.

Okay fine. If you want those guys, you can have em'. But I have to warn you. Dave McNally died 16 years ago. Pat Dobson passed in 06'. Mike Cuellar is 81 and Jim Palmer is 73 so I'm pretty sure both have lost a little off the fast ball.

Thinking yes. Cards aren't as good as the Cubs or Braves. With the changes last week, they brought up guys at AAA who needed to come up. With Pham gone, Tyler O'Neill is getting called up. He and Carson Kelley (who is a catcher) were the guys at AAA ready for the show. Although Kelley is obviously blocked by Molina. I wouldn't be shocked to see Kelley traded before the deadline this afternoon.
And if I can be honest, I think I'd trade Carpenter, too. He's 32 or 33, and having a really good month. He's under contract for next year, with an option for 2020. I think he's worth at least 4 or 5 prospects (if Pham was worth 3).

Okay, we're pretty much about 110 games in. But still, tons of biesbol to play. Observations:
The Yank Me's are 28 games over .500. Twenty Eight Games. And they're 7.5 games back of my Sox. Yeah, I said it again. My AL bandwagon team, Boston. The Sox are as hot as any team I've seen in forever.
Contrast that with the Indians, who are only 11 games over .500 and 10 games up in the Central. What a shitty conference. And how quickly have the Royals gone from World Series penthouse to the cellar dweller outhouse. 40 games under .500.
The Astros continue to roll at 28 games over .500 but the A's are suddenly the surprise team. They've overtaken Seattle and are only 5 games back. Wildcard?
In the NL, the Braves and Phillies are essentially tied for first with both teams 12 games over .500. I still can't help but think the Nats, at 5 games out, will make a run and take the division.
Cubs maintain a 17 games over .500 pace but the damn Brew Crew won't go away at 1.5 games back. Cards and Pirates lurking at 7 back with mucho ball to play.
I continue to laugh at the Dodgers. How much money can you possibly waste? Yeah, they're in first. But the D'backs, Rockies and Giants are right there within easy striking distance.
Okay, on another note, I saw a factoid the other day saying my Bravos have not won a playoff series since 2001. That's F'ing pathetic and sad. While I'm stoked with how they're playing this year, I still have no illusions they'll get in, much less win anything. But, I'm definitely pumped with the young talent and a long term plan that looks like it's coming to fruition.

I'm bandwagon too. Braves fan for always, all the way back to Rafael Ramierez, Claudell Washington, Neikro, Dusty Baker, Murph, Horner.. watched them on TBS on my grandmother's 19" color TV to start. She loved the Braves.
Jumped on the Red Sox wagon in the 90s for reasons unknown. Mostly because I hated the Yankees (this girl I liked was a Royals fan and she hated the Yankees, so I did too).
Was baptized as a Red Sox fan in 2004 in Yankee Stadium. Watched Pedro pitch as the Sox swept New York and realized just how much Boston v. NY was like Auburn v. Alabama -- and we were definitely the Sox. Any possible lingering doubts were erased. For every 10 pieces of AU gear I've probably got seven Red Sox and two Panthers.
Can't wait until September and the Braves/Sox series that's looking better and better by the day. Even though it's in Atlanta I'll wear Boston gear two days and Atlanta gear one (and it'll be old school fat/round A, not the Bama-looking script). Have decided to make a week of it. Gonna go over Friday, do the AU/Washington kickoff game if I can Saturday, chill Sunday and Braves/Sox Monday-Wednesday.

Braves get a split in the double header at Washington. So far they're 4-2 on the road trip. Cards handled their business and the Cubs are comfortably in front 4-0 in the 7th. Damn Brewers won't go away and the Phillies have decided to go from super shitty last year (Like the Braves) to "We ain't going anywhere neither." However, they're out in the desert to play the league leading D-backs for a series. Come on, Snakes.
The AL has several super teams, but the races are so damn anti-climatic. Anyone think the playoffs won't be the Bosox, Yankees, Indians and Astros? Not me. But I have to admit, I can't name one damn person on the A's and they are kicking ass right now. 5 games back of the Stros. No worries for Houston, though. They're doing this with half their line up on the DL. They'll get healthy and blow it open at the end.

Leading the NL in home runs from the lead off spot. It's a funny looking stat but he's got 30+ HR's and only what...62 RBI's? But he starts the game with nobody on base and most of his at bats follow the pitcher's spot. Dude is killing it.
You guys should turn into ATL fans this weekend with the Brewers coming to Suntrust. Scares me, though. They've kind of hit their stride again.

I'm reasonable sure that Anthony Rizzo, if he hasn't already done it, will do it every single year that he plays. He will hit more home runs in the world series this year than Barry Bonds did in his career.

Alright Birds and Baby Bears. The Braves did their job and took 2 out of 3 from the Brewers. Coming into today, the Cubs were in the lead at 18 games over .500. The Brewers were 2 back. The Cards were 5 1/2 back. (Haven't looked to see if either of you have played) But over the next 5 days, you've both got a chance to do some damage.
But, let's hope today wasn't a sign of something big for Milwaukee. Yeah they lost 8-7. They had 19 hits and about 164 men left on base. They should have destroyed the ATL. 19 freakin' hits. That's sick.

Ed Zachary. And, as long as it's in retaliation for something. Acuna has fun and knows he's a bad ass. But, he hasn't done anything to diss the Marlins or anyone else. He was just going all Carpenter with his lead off at-bats. I think Uranus, or whatever his name is, just made a bad decision and took it upon himself to take him out. Mattingly has to stand up for his players, so he didn't throw him under the bus. But, he did put him out in the road.

Philly and Colorado virtually tied with Milwaukee, who are up 1/2 game on St Louis and 1 1/2 on the Dodgers.
Cards head to LA today for a 3 game set with the Dodgers and then the Rockies.
Cubs have a two game set at Detroit, then head home to take on the Reds.
Braves on the road at Pittsburgh and Miami this week.
If the Cards can win these next two series, that should put them in the lead in the Wild Card standings, and give them some breathing room on the Dodgers. Cubs and Braves should be able to at least go 4-2 over the next 6.

No exaggeration here when I say this is probably 8-10 times the Braves have brought up a minor league pitcher for their first start. Tight games tonight. Cubbies locked up with Jacob DeGrom in a 1-1 tie. Cards holding on to a lead over the Buccos. Brew Crew lose.
Wasn't happy that the Braves had the Rays coming in. 8 game winning streak and having recently swept a 4 game series from my bandwagon Red Sox. But the Bravos answered the call with a 9-5 win. Nats beat the Phillies, so the Braves are up by 4 1/2. I laughed when the Braves announcers sarcastically said the magic number is 27. We're so close.

Went to all three games.
Boston may be the best baseball team I’ve ever seen. No huge stars. No household names. Fundamentally sound top to bottom. Business-like. Confident. Every out is a tough out.
Atlanta doesn’t have the bullpen to hang in. In all three game the starting pitching was adequate. But Boston destroyed the relief staff.
Tua Tussiant no hit Boston for four innings Monday. Then he got tagged for three runs and came out. Atlanta cut it to 3-2 and then relievers that constantly pitched from behind in the count gagged up five runs over the last two innings. Atlanta left the bases loaded 17 times.
On Tuesday, Newcomb started and struggled with control. He still had a lead after four, but as soon as he got pulled in the fifth (with runners on) the bullpen promptly gave up hits and runs. Some other awful pitcher hacked up two more runs in the sixth.
Today, Fuzzywitz (or whatever) was rolling along. Went six innings, looked good. Held Boston to two hits and struck out five. Atlanta bats staked him to a 7-1 lead. And then, I guess because the Atlanta coaching staff thought they had it in the bag, they pulled him.
Biddle scraped through one inning, but they pulled him and put in some asshole named Winkler. That sack of shit (and I love the Red Sox) gave up four hits and four runs. Venters came in and puked up two more runs. Brach surrendered two hits and got one out. And then Minter. He finally stopped the bleeding with the game tied. Part of the Atlanta disaster was a garbage effort from some putz in right field (I think it was Duvall, might have been Adams) who half-assed dove at a ball he should have probably caught and then pulled up short and flinched at one that should have been a routine out (and would have killed the six-run rally).
Freddie Freeman comes off the bench and with two outs launches one into the seats. Atlanta back on top 8-7. Braves saved!!!
Nope. Good lord. Minter pitching in the top of the ninth. Got two outs around a Beninintendo single and then grooved one to a 37-year old guy who got called up on Tuesday, hadn't played in a major league game since 2017 and scuffled through the minors all season. Brandon Phillips deposited Minter's pitch in the bleachers. Boston leapfrogs ahead 9-8. Cue Kimbrell (who isn't as dominant as he has been but was good enough today). Sox sweep.
Atlanta's bullpen was atrocious. Constantly struggling with 3-0 and 3-1 counts. Passing out hits and RBIs like candy. As much as I'd like to see a Braves-Sox World Series, the Bravos aren't ready for prime time yet.
Duvall or Adams (whichever it was) needs to be benched. Henry Winkler needs to be flogged in the middle of Suntrust Square.
I did, however:
1) Get to see Acuna lead off a game with a home run. That was special.
2) See Freeman punish a ball
3) See one of the biggest comebacks in Red Sox history, the biggest of 2018 for sure
4) See what I consider to be one of the best teams in recent history
5) Watch that old Phillips guy write a feel-good story
SunTrust Plaza/Park or whatever they're calling it is pretty nice. Ate at two of the restaurants down there over the three days. No real wait. Good food. Good service. Getting in and out was a breeze, traffic was well managed.
If I had any complaint it's that the concessions in the stadium are pretty underwhelming. There are a couple of nice amenities -- the little convenience store with bottled drinks, some small souvenirs, susih, ice cream and other junk -- is a nice touch. I still think Turner Field did a much better job with concessions and also the clubhouse store.

Red Sox are 9.5 up on the Yank Me's. Indians have just crushed it in the 2nd half and are cruising down the stretch with a 16 game lead. Astros holding a 3.5 game lead on the A's.
Braves are up 3 on the Phillies despite a 3 game spanking by the Sox. Cubbies up 4 on the Beer Makers and 4.5 on the Red Birds. Rockies are up 1.5 and 2 on the Dodgers and Snakes respectively.

Can I just add to my long post about which nobody gives a damn, that I was surprised to see so many Red Sox fans at the game. I'd say the crowd was split almost 50/50 with cheers for Boston often drowning out those for Atlanta.
In addition, I encountered my first real gaggle of Georgia fans. What a pack of assholes. Loud, ignorant, douchebags.
This one idiot kept calling everybody on the field and in the stands a faggot. Then when he stood up to leave he was wearing salmon colored tight jeans, rolled at the ankle, loafers with no socks, a tight short-sleeve dark-colored button down shirt with some small little pink pictures or something and aviator Ray Bans. His hair and face looked like Shepherd Smith. This is the same guy who kept talking with his bros about the War Tampons and how they showed our asses in the SEC Championship game.
The entire lot of them -- which included a fat older guy in a visor and three or four douche-bros -- had absolutely zero baseball knowledge and continually spouted crap that was demonstrably false (as in just look at the scoreboard). I wanted to throat punch all of them.

Bravos took care of business 8-3 against the Phillies to drop the magic number to 4. They play the last 3 of the regular season at Sun Trust against the Ponies. I'll settle for a split in the series, which would mean one Braves win and one Phillies loss after that seals the division. Need 1 of the next 3.
In other news, the Cubbies play the White Sox and one would assume they'll handle their bidnezz in that series. So, the Wild Card in the NL comes down to the Brewers and Cards. The Rockies and Snakes are behind them. Brewers at 87-66 and the Cards at 84-69, both with 9 to play.

Sorry, but despite feeling like a loss after a 34-3 Auburn win, I'm celebrating a Bravos division victory. Look, I've said it several times. We've proven we don't match up with the big boys. So, I expect an early post season exit. That's fine. As I said prior to the season, even top management was saying this year was only about finding out what young guys would be part of the plan going forward. Kudos to Snitker. Manager of the Year, Hands down.
Now, I beg to differ with Jar on the importance of the race in the NL Central. The 2nd place team will absolutely win the WC. With 7 games to play, the Brew Crew holds a 2 game lead on the Cards. Cubs are in regardless.

They made some bad expenditures with Uggla and the brothers who sucked up the outfield. They dumped contracts, dumped great young talent, dumped a stadium in a shitty part of town and upgraded on all fronts. The stadium and area around it is fantastic. The young talent they have in the field of play is incredible. The farm system has worked beautifully.

Several things happened. Freeman stayed healthy and had the type year he should every year. Markakis had a career year. Off the charts. And, the young guns of Acuna,Jr. Albies and Camargo exceeded all expectations. Spot on with the pitching. Above average at best, but kept them in the game all season long. If I was handling the "tweaking" in the off season, I'd find two legit starters, as you said. And I'd probably package Swanson with some farm talent to go get a big time bat.

Shit is getting real in a different way now. First off, sorry Jar but screw your Birds for letting me down. You're letting Milwaukee come to your house and steal your lunch money. I wanted a Braves, Cards, Cubs, Whoever playoffs. Frick!
Now, down to bidnezz. As I type, the Cubs are getting shut out by the Pirates. The Brewers are hammering the aforementioned Birds late. If this holds up, and it looks like it will, tomorrow will find the Cubs up only a half game on Milwaukee with 4 to play.
The Dodgers are playing the downtrodden D'Backs and should hold on to the division. But, if the Baby Bears don't get that shit together, they might get overtaken by the Rockies. Meaning, it's still a very real, miniscule as it might be, possibility the Cubs don't make the playoffs.

Pitching is my thing. It was what I was sort of semi-decent at throughout my "career". As boring as this would be to 99.875% of the population, I love watching a great pitching performance. Yeah, I love watching wall bangers and roid rage home runs. But, watching someone who has complete control of where a pitch will go, how fast or slow it will go there and knowing why you're throwing that pitch to that particular batter in that situation, is frickin' awesome to me.
My Bravos got embarrassed tonight by maybe the best in the game right now, Jacob deGrom. He gave up a couple of early hits, then set down 20 in a row. TWENTY major league hitters. And he toyed with them. 97-99 fast ball. Perfectly located breaking pitches at 82-84. Threw that Greg Maddox back up pitch all night that starts a foot off the plate and cuts back into the strike zone after hitters have given up on it. He's 10-9 with about a 1.30 ERA. He'll win the Cy Young because voters recognize what a shitty team he plays for. Perfect example. His ERA is right at 1.00 against the Braves. He's 1-5. You tell me.
Give me deGrom, Kershaw, Scherzer, Verlander, Kluber etc. I'll watch that shit all day.

Can't believe I stayed up and watched that. On another note, I was texting back and forth with Buzz and he had to think I was high on meth. I found the game on ESPN and was watching, not realizing they had the normal Sunday night crew announcing it on another ESPN channel. The crew I was watching consisted of Eduardo Perez and two guys I'd never heard of and they spent the entire telecast showing unbelievably meaningless stats. They never gave batting average, home run or RBI totals. Just their percentage of WAR and OPS and BLT and TGIF and pie charts showing where each batter normally hits the ball....swing rates...miss rates etc.
I'm asking Buzz who came up with this shit? He's looking at my texts and wondering why I'm getting so hammered on a Tuesday night.

Braves get shut out for the 2nd night in a row. Exactly what I feared. 6-0 last night and 3-0 tonight. They may lose the series without scoring a run. Kershaw was sick tonight.
The reality is that the Braves won their division. Blew me away. Totally did not see that coming. But, this was the weakest division in baseball....by a long shot. And in series against the top teams like the Dodgers, Red Sox etc. they proved they're not at that level yet. It is what it is.
The key now is the General Manager doing his job. This club has above average pitching and an extremely young corp of guys who exceeded all expectations. What do they need? Two solid starters and maybe one big bat. The young guys...and I mean really young...will only get better. Time to trade Dansby Swanson...maybe Ender...and get that big bopper bat that will make everyone around him better.
I like where they're going. But, the Dodgers need to quickly put them out of their misery so they can get to it.

I'm not really big on the "cheating umpires" script in major league baseball. With the rare exception I tend to think the game is called pretty straight up.
Not tonight.
The strike zone tonight (Tuesday) for Yankees pitchers is ridiculously more expansive than that of the Red Sox pitchers. It's outrageous. Same for the first base umpire who's ringing up twitches as swings for Boston batters but says "no swing" for New Yorkers who are taking near-full cuts.

He is NOT the answer. Trotting his hillbilly ass out there is about the only thing I question about the moves Alex Cora makes as manager.
Watching that redneck moron pitch makes me queasy. I nearly vomit when I see him come in from the pen. The Sox are lucky (and thanks to some incredible defensive plays) they're not in a 1-3 hole because of that assclown.

On September 5 I said this about the Red Sox:
Boston may be the best baseball team I’ve ever seen.
Tonight, and throughout this World Series, that feeling was confirmed. Top to bottom this is the best baseball TEAM I've ever seen. I've seen better individual players, but this was the most complete team (maybe in any sport) I've ever had the opportunity to watch.
I'm grateful that I got to see them play in Atlanta (and sweep the Braves) in September.
I was baffled when the Sox got rid of Farrell after two straight division titles and then brought in Cora, but it was a brilliant move. Every decision Cora made pretty much all season long (except for when he kept trotting Kimbrell out there) was spot on.

I love baseball. It does my heart good to see a team devoid of superstars and not prone to the "look at me" preening I see from some of the others (and from the Sox in the past, honestly).
I despise Puig. Nothing but contempt for Machado. That guy is a dirty player and an assclown. Loved watching him whiff for the final out tonight.
It wasn't a great series. Boston was substantially better than the rest of the field. (FWIW, the best World Series I ever saw was the Twins-Braves seven-game masterpiece. Just wish Atlanta had won that one). The Friday night game nearly broke me.
I actually went to a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show (what a fun freakshow) at 9 Friday and thought I was going to miss the game. But nope. Date was over about 11 and got home in time to see the Sox take and then squander the lead. Watched that until it was over. Had to be up at six the next morning to take care of some stuff and was a zombie the rest of the day.
Last night when Puig hit that three-run homer and then strutted and flexed around the bases I thought, "well that might fire the Sox up." Definitely broke the bats out for the final three innings. I almost turned it off but remembered watching Boston erase a 7-1 lead in the seventh against Atlanta.
Never really thought LA had a chance tonight. The 18-inning game may have taken a lot out of Boston, but that nine-run rampage Saturday broke the Dodgers spirit. I don't much care for LA. Never did. That dates back to when the Braves were in the NL West.
Edit to add: Apparently I owe a lot to Aaron Judge as well. When that cocky Yankee asshole strutted out of Fenway with his boombox blaring, that lit an additional fire under this team. Watching the entire Boston team mock his freaky-looking gray ass in a champagne/beer soaked celebration was simultaneously satisfying and a little sad. Fuck the Yankees. Don't even let them be in your head when you just won the World Series.

I'm pumped about the Sox winning it but honestly, I saw less of this series than any I can remember. We were on the road coming back from Atlanta last night and by the time we unloaded and turned on the tube, the scroll said the Red Sox won. Yay!
It's funny because growing up, I was a Braves fan but the Yankees were the bomb. Or Bronx Bombers. It was more about the names, the stars. Lou Piniella, Thurman Munson, Craig Nettles, Micky Rivers, Catfish Hunter and on and on. The Red Sox were the flies in the ointment, Hans. Just pesky, little brothers that needed to be dealt with every now and then. Me and my pops loved our Braves and Yankees.
But then baseball...sports changed. It became all about money and free agency. Your team and the names changed every season and it became apparent that the Yankees' goal was only to out spend everyone and try to buy a championship every year. It quickly turned from knowing and loving your team, to what the hell have you done to the organization....to baseball. It quickly turned to hate. And my AL favorite started shifting toward their most hated rival.
Also, the Red Sox were the Cubs of the AL. The loveable losers who seemed cursed...by the Bambino. I started pulling for them not only to beat the evil empire, but to break that curse as well. While they've long since put that behind them, the truth is they didn't start competing until they started throwing insane cash at the free agency market. Now, they're right up there at the top of the arms race.
K, you may be right about this being the best "team". They certainly proved it numbers-wise. But on a sheer collection of talent basis, I'll still take the Big Red Machine in Cincy. Hated them, but only because I knew they were unstoppable.

Love this signing. Plus, they signed Brian McCann to a 1 year deal as well. Two very experienced guys, which the Braves need. Now, to be fair, I'm a little concerned about Donaldson. He's only one year removed from 3 MVP caliber seasons. But he seriously fell off last year and was bounced around. Do teams know something? Honestly, I've only followed his stats/production and not behind the scenes. Is he damaged goods?
Either way, here's hoping he can resurrect his career in the NL. If he can, and McCann is half way decent, the Bravos just got a lot better.
Need a couple of legit starters as much as anything else, though.

I think Donaldson is fine. It just so happened he was somewhat injured during his trade season. He was bought to help make the Indians to do some damage in the postseason. Basically a rental. He came on strong during the end of the season.

I'll see you a Goldschmidt and raise you one Donaldson. Seriously, that's one hell of a pick up. Dude is one of the best in the game and gets no real love because of the market he plays in. You got him at 31 years old, right in the prime. .290 average with 33 HR and 83 RBI this season.
The Cards just got a lot better.

The thing about Goldschmidt is you know exactly what you're getting. His stats have remained consistent and in fact, his last 2 years have been some of his best. Donaldson went on a 4-5 year run where he was one of the best in the game, then last year he bounced around and played a fraction of the games he normally does and his stats dropped off a cliff. I would assume injuries, but what concerns me is the fact that neither Toronto or Cleveland held on to him. Damaged goods? I guess we'll see soon enough. If he can get somewhat back to form and give us 25-30 HR's and a decent average, he'll be worth it.
Goldie is a .297 career hitter BTW. For a bat with that much pop in it, that's skrong!

Since pitchers and catchers don't report just yet, I guess this is still some 2018 bitchin' and moanin'. The Braves plucked Nick Markakis back out of free agency on a one year deal for half the salary at $4 mil. Kind of surprising given that he was their most productive hitter last year. But he is getting long in the tooth for an everyday player and I imagine he didn't garner much interest for anybody on a multi-year deal. Glad he's back in the fold.
I was hoping they would go and get a #1 starter out of free agency to bolster what was a decent, but very young staff. It looks to me like the quality isn't out there anymore with Dallas Keuchel and maybe Gio Gonzales being the best remaining. Certainly not #1's although Keichel has had his moments with the Stro's. Craig Kimbrel is still out there and I'd have no problem picking him back up if the price was right. I certainly wouldn't break the bank for him.
Any news on the Cards/Cubbies/Rangers/Orioles etc. Note that I threw the Orioles in there for AU1 because they are clearly the worst to first team this year.

But considering Bryant was just pandering to a room packed with thousands of Cubs fans who love to hate on the Cardinals, the St. Louis players would certainly chill out upon learning the context and cooler heads would prevail, right?

Ugh, Hyde comes into a bad situation. Probably as bad as Buck did when he came to Baltimore. I don't think Hyde will do what Buck did or can. In Bucks third year we played for the ALDS, then made two more post season appearances including the ALCS. It will be a miracle if Hyde can reproduce that. Davis is a lost cause I am afraid. I thought maybe the Brocali hire as the pitching coach would be a nice move, but then I looked him up. It seems his pitchers in Texas only got worse under him. I'm pretty hopeful that Mullins turns out to be a damn good ballplayer. Nothing major as far as player acquisition. This season is going to suck again. This is going to be a long rebuild and losing (and I mean losing a lot) is going to be a part of it.
I am hopeful for the future in the long run. I am hoping that Elias can do the same thing here that he did in Houston. I personally don't think Hyde survives long enough to benefit from what I am hoping that Elias can do. We'll see. I am still a little butt hurt over Zach Britton in pinstripes. Fuck Georgia and Fuck the Yankees!
