Title: The Official 2013 MLB Bitch and Moan Thread
Post by: Tiger Wench on April 01, 2013, 03:19:33 PM
So.  Here we are again at another Opening Day.  For some fans, this day is as highly anticipated as their birthday and Christmas all wrapped up into one.

For some of us, though, given the choice between a pelvic exam and another painful MLB season of mismanagement and major league suckitude, we’d choose the pelvic any day.

Yeah, I know what you are thinking.  “But Wench, you ungrateful hussy.  The Suckasstros beat the Texas By God Rangers last night!  Whooped’em!  Your little team of misfits is #1 in the MLB standings right now!!”

To which I reply…

Fuck them.  And fuck you.

I know how this story ends.  I know which way this mop flops.  And I ain’t getting sucked in again.  Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice or even three times, and yeah, well, I am just a dumbass motherfucker, ain’t I?

Losingest team in baseball last year.  Once of the worst records in modern times.  So far below .500 that .300 was just a happy memory.  And there is absolutely zero fucking chance that this team of wet behind the ears newbies will even manage to get out of the gate before flopping again in an epic fashion.  They are so damn green that I can name exactly ONE player on the team, and he’s a washed up old has been pitcher.  Our manager?  He’s black.  That’s all I know about him.  Don’t even know his name.  Our new owner?  Tried to milk more money out of the fans by going all “retro” on the ugliest logo the Suckasstros ever sported.  Don’t count on seeing my bodacious tatas in a “new” jersey until I see some GOTDAMM production on the field, you sleazy, corrupt underhanded fanboy.  And where, exactly, will that production come from??  Our ENTIRE team payroll is less than A-Rod’s salary for the whole fucking year.  Yeah, boy, lots of high expectations here.

So all you Oriole fans, and you St. Looey fans and you Cubbie fans and you Bravo fans, take heed.  Hear me now and believe me later.  Don’t get sucked in.  Some team will be hoisting those trophies this year but it ain’t gonna be yours.  And shit, you Ranger fans might as well give up now – you lost to the worst fucking team in baseball last night.  How'd that Opening Day work out for ya'?

Here’s to another season of busted dreams, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, gutwrenching losses and steaming heaps of shit dished out by overpaid prima donna athletes, all of which shall be passed off to we the gullible ticket buying public as “America’s Game”.

Play ball.

The Astros looked damn good last night and those uni's were top shelf.  No reason why they shouldn't be in contention right down to the wire.  Well, maybe one reason would be there's like 50 individual players out there with a salary of more than the Astros entire payroll.  They went green this year.

Now, for the Bravos.  They gone make me lose my cool, Upton here, Upton here.

From the Braves website....the projected opening day line up against the Phillies.

1. SS: Andrelton Simmons
 2. RF: Jason Heyward
 3. LF: Justin Upton
 4. 1B: Freddie Freeman
 5. CF: B.J. Upton
 6. 2B: Dan Uggla
 7. 3B: Chris Johnson
 8. C: Gerald Laird
 9. SP: Tim Hudson

The line up looks pretty damn badass IF Chopper's brother will hit at least .250 this year. He needs to extend those short arms and he'll hit better.  Don't know squat about Chris Johnson or Gerald Laird, other then one is Mrs. Johnson's boy and the other is filling in til' McCann is ready.

Last year, Gonzales went with 5 and sometimes 6 guys as starters, especially down the stretch.  Really seemed to keep the arms fresh, which is probably pretty important for a guy like Hudson.  I would guess he'll do something similar this year.

Hudson
Medlen
Minor
Maholm
Tehran
Is Beachey off the DL?  I haven't been following them closely this spring.  Also, did hear that Venters was seeing Dr. James Andrews this past weekend for tightness in his elbow.  Anyone heard anything on that?

Bump.  Just checked the stats.  Chopper Light batted .200 in 26 games this Spring with 25 strikeouts.  Soooo...he's got that goin' for him.

*Sigh*  I don't know what to expect.  Very few changes to our roster. Hey, one game and that damn CC Sabastard having a bad night away from the ALCS, right?  I should be happy, but then again something tells me that since we either won big or lost big last year, lost most of the close ones that I should prepare for a shitty season.  Unless our bats are on fire all year, I don't see us having that many wins again.

What? Here comes that feeling that is sucking me in, Buck didn't want to make many changes so maybe it's a good thing.  He knows what he is doing, right? Right?  Tell me I am right?

3rd behind the Yank-me's and the Devil's of Tampa Bay.  I don't expect to see us in the mix again until we develop some pitching or we buy some.  Last year was lucky that some of the guys we moved from middle relief gave some good outings and the young guys that we called up gave us some good innings.  I don't see that happening again.

Most of the prognosticator-inators have TB winning that division with Toronto a close second.  I think you can throw a hat over the Yank-Me's, Sahchs and Glory-Holes.  The Yank-Me's are old and half the team is injured.  The RS are just meh and I still don't recognize a soul on the Orioles roster.  Didn't they go from 90+ losses to 90+ wins in one season?

The Rangers   Ron Washington= Gene Chizik. I haven't been to a Ranger game in over 5 years. Got a double AA and independent league team in the area, which makes for better baseball and more importantly cheaper beer.

Red Sox slapping around the Yank-Me's 7-2 in the 9th in teh Bronx.  Been a bandwagon Sox fan for a while. First, needed an AL team to root for but more importantly, I needed to pull against the Yankees and their $800 skwazillion payroll. The arch rival Sox were just the ticket.  Plus, Fenway Pahk is on my bucket list to watch a game at.  Where Nomah used to crush em' wicked fah.

Add the Bravos to the list of 1-0 teams.  Although, I did think they were going to give it away in the 8th.  What the heck happened to Ross?  He was a solid backup catcher and was pretty good with the bat too.

Season getting cranked up. Can't complain about the Braves leading the Majors with an 8-1 record.  No offense to the Buzzer but 6 of those wins have come against the Cubs and  1-8 Marlins. On the road this weekend to the Nationals should be the real test.  Two things.  The pitching has just been the titz to this point.  Easily the biggest reason for the record.  The Braves are getting scoring some runs and seem to get right at double digit hits each night, but the encouraging thing is where it's coming from.  They have this record with Brian McCann out. (Gattis is kicking ass)  Freddie Freeman has been out the last few games.  Andrelton Simmons missed some time with an injury.  BJ Upton is batting .103 and Jason Heyward...  .071.

Would love to see what they can do with everyone back in the line up and clicking.

My question is, what do we do with Gattis?  You can't sit him until he cools off. What if, when McCann returns, Gattis has double digit home runs and I still batting .300?

Nice problem to have.  And I'm a little concerned with how they handled the Freeman injury.  We need to keep him long term.

I like McCann a lot and think he's dropped off a good bit the last 2-3 seasons because of a variety of injuries.  I think the guy has several All Star caliber years ahead IF he gets 100% healthy.  All reports I've heard are that he's ready to do that.  But initially, I'd like to see them alternate the two against lefties and righties.  Gattis is a RH batter so play him against LH pitching initially and McCann against righties until they get a feel for whether McCann is back 100%.  Just my take...but they're not paying me a million+ to manage.

Or how about Gattis hitting a chin high 100 mph fastball about 415 ft?  A series win against the Nationals is all I asked for, but a sweep would be fantastic.

It blows my mind.  I know it won't last, but how is it possible?  Dude almost hit another one out on Gio Gonzalez in his first AB.  RBI double off the wall.  And a RBI sac fly later in the game.  He is hitting like a seasoned vet.

Bryan McCann played second base through high school.  I'd say its about time to see how he plays third base.

So do the Braves work McCann back slowly playing first or third some which could extend his career or mess with fate and screw around with alternating the two? Sure would like to see Gattis hitting ahead of McCann with that lively bat.

Even?  Shit, it's going to be unstoppable.  It's the lack of the mullet on the A that is giving them all the power.

It was just one little game.  You are only going to lose 42 games this year and hit 120 and break the record.  I would happy if I were a Braves fan.  They are so good that I am thinking about going out and buying some Braves gear this afternoon.

Just wanted to stop by and comment on how well those Orioles are doing.  Second place and gaining ground.  There is no doubt in my mind that they'll be at least 7 games up by the All Star break.  The momentum will be too much for the rest of the pack by then.  Congrats on a great season.

We will lose it all and be well entrenched in 3rd by the All Star break and then slide further down the slope after the all star game.  I know our routine way to well.

Now the Braves on the other hand.  Has there ever been a team that finished 156-6, b/c I believe we are going to see it this year.

I still say the nats are uber talented. Especially their pitching. The phillies still have bats and can get streaky. Pretty sure they had one of the best records in teh beisbolz after the all star break last year. I just wouldn't sleep on either of those teams. Combine that with the fact that the braves have lived off the long ball for most of their wins, and I think the division is wide open. I think they are only 3 games up on 2nd right now.

Who Needs Wrigley?

By MATTHEW FUTTERMAN

Just when it looked like the Chicago Cubs and city leaders had reached a meeting of the minds on a $300 million Wrigley Field renovation, team owner Tom Ricketts said Wednesday he would consider moving the team if opponents somehow quash his plans to erect a giant video board above the bleachers in left field and a new sign in right.

"If it comes to the point that we don't have the ability to do what we need to do in our outfield, then we're going to have to consider moving," Ricketts told a gathering at the City Club of Chicago—just as he began the process of gaining approval for his plan from four separate government bodies. A spokesman for Ricketts said he didn't mean to threaten anyone.

No one in Chicago believes Ricketts would move the Cubs out of his century-old ballpark which, in most years, is the most appealing part of attending a terrible team's home games. But if it ever comes to that, it's probably time to start scouting for new locations. So here are a few ballpark sites to consider.

Milwaukee: Home of Old Style beer, a Wrigley tradition. Having ballgames inside a brewery eliminates the middleman.

The Quad Cities: The Cubs-loving Iowans and Illinoisans from Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island and Moline have already built a quaint ballpark (pictured here) that has plenty of room for giant billboards and jumbotrons. Fewer newspaper reporters, too.

East St. Louis, Ill.: Now here's an urban area that's looking for some new investors. It's also right across the river from a town where people actually go to baseball games to watch baseball.

U.S. Cellular Field: Charmless park on the South Side is home to the White Sox, the city's other last-place baseball team. The fans get along really well and would enjoy sharing.

Lower Wacker Drive: No particular reason, other than it's kind of fun to say "Wacker." Also close to Billy Goat Tavern.

Burn Unit at County General: Many of Wrigley's drunk, sunburned Bleacher Bums come here after the game anyhow.

Ryan Field: Northwestern's football team and the Cubs have similar traditions of excellence. And since the Cubs will be done by August, no scheduling conflicts!

The Braves got such an incredible start to the season that despite going 6-11 in their last 17, they're still in first place. They need to get this shift fixed.

Looks like the Cards have quietly become the class of the NL.  Checked the box scores this morning and they're sitting at 20-11.

It's all been starting pitching (I'd like to send that to the owner of the Angels - spend all that money on bats, and they still suck).  We are a full run better than anyone else in the NL with our starters.  Our bullpen, however, is the worst in baseball.  You turn on Baseball Tonight, though, and it's like baseball doesn't exist west of the Hudson River and outside L.A.

I expect the starters to revert to mean sooner or later though.  Although it's nice to see that 4 of the 5 starters, the Cards have locked in for at least 3 more years - and 2 of them are either in their 2nd season, or their rookie year.

Craig Sweet Cheeks Kimbrel comes in with a 4-3 lead in the 9th.  Gets the first two batters.  Full count to the 9th place hitter.  BAM...game tied.  Next batter.  Sin Shoo Choo Foo MooShoo Gai Pan...BAM...game over.

Best closer in baseballz last year. Now 3 blown saves in his last 5 outings.

Sounds like he's ready for the Cardinals bullpen.

And our offense is so Jekyll/Hyde.

Of our 12 losses, 6 have come with the starting pitching giving up 2 runs or fewer.

To further pile on (Sad when our teams are in first) the Braves have to be on pace to set a strikeout record.  They're striking out in double digits virtually every single game. Honestly, no excuse for that.  You've got proven hitters throughout this line up but they all seem to have no discipline at the plate, save for Freddie Freeman.

I wish you two would quit bitching.  It's not like you aren't going to play in the NLCS.  The Orioles on the other hand will not finish better than third.  We can't get over that hump and even if we could........pffffffftttttttttttttt.   Rangers would beat that ass.  As a matter of fact I think that it doesn't matter who wins the NLCS, the Rangers are the most badass and complete team in MLB.  This could possibly be their best team ever.  I don't see anyone that can stop them.

This^^^ well...that last part of this^^^.  The Bravos are falling apart at the seams and will be lucky to play .500 ball by season's end.  The Rangers, on the other hand....now THAT'S one hell of a team.

Bravos up 7-2 in the bottom of the 9th in a Wednesday matinee in Cincy.  Would be nice to hold on and take a series at the beginning of a long road trip. Just saw a box score showing 7 runs on 11 hits. That's what they're capable of most games.  But, probably have 26 strike outs to go with it.

And it goes final.  7-2 Good guys.  Chopper Uggla hit 2 solo shots and Juan Francisco hit a grand salami in the 8th to break it open.  Mike Minor went 7, allowing 1 run on 4 hits.  20-13 heading to SF.

And I happened to be at the only game they lost.

Oh well...I am 3 for 4 on wins this year. It's easy to have that kind of record going to the games when the club is 29-15.

Remember several years ago when Albert Pujols was the baddest man on the planet.  Whether you like St. Louis or not, you had to pay attention to what Pujols was doing because on any at-bat, you might see him knock down some some poor, unsuspecting left field wall with a rocket.  Miguel Cabrera is that man now.  I watched last night and the Rangers won despite 3 HR's from Cabrera.  When the pitcher ducks on a home run swing, you know the hitter has taken a rip.

6'4" 240  Hitting .387 with 11 HR and 47 RBI.  We're what, a little over 40 games in and Cabrera has 47 RBI?  Shheeeeit!!!

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/51937226/ns/sports-baseball/

Quote
After years as the best, Pujols is irrelevant

The thing that’s strange – the thing that’s sad – is how little excitement there is now when he comes to the plate. Let’s go to a moment in Sunday’s Angels-White Sox game. The count is 3-0, and Albert Pujols has the green light. There should be an electrical charge buzzing the air. Only … really … there isn’t a buzz. There isn’t a charge. There isn’t anything at all. The thrill-o-meter is at zero.

So strange. So sad. It used to be one of baseball’s great thrills to watch Albert Pujols hit. Whether you were a Cardinals fan or not, you would find yourself marking the pace of games by Albert Pujols' at bats.

Pujols just hit, so he probably won’t come up for another two innings, let’s get a hot dog.

St. Louis is down two, but Pujols is scheduled to hit fourth in the eighth.

Hey, the Cardinals avoiding the double play means Pujols will get up one more time before the game’s over.

Stuff like that. Here are the top five players in baseball history after 10 years in Batting Wins Above Replacement – so, perhaps, the five best hitters after 10 seasons (the slash statistics are batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage):

Ted Williams: .347/.484/.633 with 366 doubles, 323 homers, 1,261 RBIs, 1,273 runs, 83.7 WAR.

Albert Pujols: .331/.426/.624 with 426 doubles, 408 homers, 1,230 RBIs, 1186 runs, 81.1 WAR.

Babe Ruth: .346/.477/.701 with 271 doubles, 305 homers, 932 RBIs, 969 runs, 78.8 WAR.

Stan Musial: .347/.431/.584 with 373 doubles, 206 homers, 923 RBIs, 1,044 runs, 74 WAR.

Lou Gehrig: .343/.440/.640 with 321 doubles, 267 homers, 1,143 RBIs, 1,075 runs, 65.6 WAR.

Now, Ruth was a pitcher for much of his early career, and Pujols played in a better offensive era than many, but let’s not get too technical about all this. In his first 10 years, Albert Pujols hit more homers than any player ever, and also more doubles.

But the thing that was most striking about Pujols is that he was always exactly as good as he had been the year before. He never had a bad year. He never had anything RESEMBLING a bad year. They called him “The Machine.” If you take the WORST statistical totals he had those first 10 years – that is, the lowest batting average he had over those 10 years, the fewest home runs he hit, etc. -- you STILL come up with this season:

.312 average, .394 on-base, .561 slugging, 33 doubles, 34 homers, 117 RBIs, 99 runs.

Repeat: Those are his WORST numbers in those first 10 years. The guy was a first-ballot Hall of Famer on his worst day.

And he was thrilling to watch hit. He stood at the plate with that wide stance – he looked so sturdy and immovable, like he was magnetically connected with the batters’ box. He was like a marble statue up there.

The pitcher would throw a ball just off the plate, and Pujols would not only refuse to swing, he would look down and kick at the dirt as if the pitch had never happened, as if it was not even worthy of his disdain. Then, when the right pitch came, his pitch, he would unleash with such ferocity you could almost see the cartoon exclamation points dancing around the collision of bat and ball. Everyone has a Pujols example. He was always one swing away from inspiring awe.

That made him exciting, riveting, one of those athletes who could stop time … and now it’s just gone. It isn’t just that Albert Pujols is hitting .241, slugging about 200 points below his career average and striking out more than he’s walking again. By now, we must have gotten used to Pujols slow starts.

Through May 3, 2011: .231/.298/.419 with seven homers.

Through May 14, 2012: .197/.255/.275 with one homer.

Through May 19, 2013: .241/.313/.418 with seven homers.

Each of the last two seasons, he hit well enough the last four-plus months of the season to end up with strong numbers. Last year, for instance, after May 14 he hit .312/.374/.589 with 42 doubles and 29 homers. You have to believe that he will start hitting again at some point.

But, even assuming he does again find the range, even assuming he has a few more productive years, the truth is that Pujols has entered a different phase of his career. After years of being the best player in baseball, Pujols is now sort of beside the point.

Look: He is 33 years old, just beginning a $240 million contract, and he’s playing for an overpriced and kind of dreadful team that looks like it was built by a rotisserie baseball beginner who ran out at the last minute and bought three fantasy baseball magazines. He looks hurt. He looks tired. He looks out of place. He looks … well, truth is, who is even looking anymore?

Miguel Cabrera, who for years had to deal with being kind of a poor-man’s Albert, won the Triple Crown, something Pujols could never quite do. He’s the one who inspires awe now. St. Louis, the team and town he had come to represent, has gone on without him, and the Cardinals have the second-best record in baseball. And Pujols is not even the most exciting or interesting player on his own team.

You tell me: If you are a young Angels fan, who will you associate with and whose jersey will you buy – Albert Pujols or Mike Trout?

It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. Few players in baseball history have worked as hard as Albert Pujols to achieve greatness. He was doubted every step of his life. He moved to Kansas City from the Dominican Republic when he was young, and everyone always whispered that he was older than he said. As a high schooler, he hit legendary home runs his average topped .500 … but he was not even on the Kansas City’s Star’s all-metro first team, and he was not drafted. He went to Maple Woods Community College and crushed the ball with such ferocity that no self-respecting scout could possibly miss it … he hit .461 with 22 homers in 40 games and, according to legend, did not strike out a single time. But scouts did miss it. Pujols was not drafted until the 13th round by the Cardinals.

Eighteen months later, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa got his first good look at Pujols. His mind was utterly blown. Pujols played every day in St. Louis and had one of the greatest rookie years in baseball history. He was better every year after that.

He was driven by the doubters, spurred by the skepticism, galvanized by people’s pessimism. He talked often about his faith and how God awakened and strengthened him. He spent hours swinging bats in the cage. He cut out anything at all that might be a distraction. And he became the best player in baseball. Then, he became the best player in baseball again. Then he became the best player in baseball again.

It was a never-ending cycle for him. They said he was slow – he stole 16 bases the next year. They said he struck out too much – he started to annually appear in the Top 10 for fewest strikeouts per at-bat. They said his defense was a liability – he won two Gold Gloves and almost certainly deserved a few more.

Then, two years ago, he was a free agent and, he did not think the Cardinals respected him enough. Their first offer to him was insultingly low (well, relatively speaking, it was a five-year deal for $130 million). The Cardinals seemed to want him on the cheap (well, relatively speaking, $210 million with a bunch of it deferred). There’s no way to get into Pujols’ mind but you suspect he thought that, as the best player in baseball, he deserved the most money in baseball.

He got $240 million. He will be getting an average of almost $28 million a deal for the next eight years. Other than Alex Rodriguez’s insane contracts – which brought their own pain – it was the highest baseball deal ever signed.

But, there’s a cost too. And the cost is … well, back to Sunday’s game. It is Angels and White Sox, a couple of sub-.500 teams, and the count is 3-0. The Angels announcer points out that Pujols does not often swing 3-0, but this is a good time to swing if the pitch is right. Sure. Swing away! The air is warm, meaning the ball will travel if hit right. The Angels re up comfortably. Here is a chance for Albert to break out of a slump, to get a little greedy, to give the fans a thrill.

The pitch is right. Pujols unleashes the swing. There are no cartoon exclamation points. Instead, he pops up to the shortstop, completing his 0-for-4 day. There will be better days, of course. But the big thing, is nobody really seems to notice. Nobody really seems to care. That’s the cost.

Yeah...it was fun to tell my son Friday night to "watch this guy hit. He is the best baseball player hitter on the planet."

The dude is so good. He can get a decent part of the bat on the ball whether it is high and tight or low and away off the plate. Dude is a crazy good player.

Although...last night...he made a lazy play at third...I think in the 7th...that allowed the Rangers to plate 2 and opened the ballgame up to a 4 run lead...

Jarhead, do you think Pujols was juicing? Or did he just naturally deteriorate really quickly?

Honest question...

Juicing?  No.

Deteriorate "quickly"?  Yes.

And define quickly.

Here is his BA/HR/RBI/BB from 2006 - 2012
2006- .331/49/137/92
2007- .327/32/103/99
2008- .357/37/116/104
2009- .327/47/135/115
2010- .312/42/118/103
2011- .299/37/99/61
2012- .285/30/105/52

2013- .241/7/25/19 - Assuming we're 25% through, that gives him 28 HR, 100RBI, and 76BB

2008 and 2009 were MVP years.  Since then, even his last two years with the Cards, his BA has been dropping.  And pretty substantial, almost .015 every year.  His home runs by almost 5 a year.

The BB is would would really concern me if I were an Angels fan.  To drop by 40% overnight?

Here's his Ks for the same period
2006 - 50
2007 - 58
2008 - 54
2009 - 64
2010 - 76
2011 - 58
2012 - 76
2013 - 25 - So on pace for 100?

So I think he's been getting "worse" (although to be fair, .312/42/118/103 in 2011 is All Star worthy), but I think over the past 4 or 5 years, his stats have been dropping.

Is he older than 33?  I dunno.  If he were 37, that would put his MVP years of 08 and 09 at the "end" of his prime, with the dropoff seen since corresponding to his mid to late 30s.

I recall reading a great SI piece on him several years back.  He addressed the claims of juicing pretty well.  Personally, I don't think he's been a juicer.  Just one of those freaks of nature, blessed with Bo-like physical strength.  Bo didn't juice or workout.  Hated it.  But that mofo would break you in half.

I just think the guy is getting up there in age (For an elite professional athlete) and the skillz are dropping off accordingly.

That's the sad part for me.  Watching Pujols become a shell of the player that he was.  And in St Louis, he'd still be a hero.

He gave up my kids saying to friends in 30 years or so "do you want to meet at the Musial statue or the Pujols statue."  Now, I think they'll still retire his number, but it will be like Bruce Sutter's number.  He won't be spoken about like the Gibbys or Musials.

This^^^ As soon as the winning run crossed the plate, the remote went click and the snoring began.

I'm glad the Braves are playing well right now.  Great home stand and some killer come from behind wins.  Exciting stuff.  But, I'm so over the Dan Uggla era and ready for him to be shipped to the first available bidder.  I'll give him his due as a hell of a second baseman, but you can find one of those in AA ball.  This guy is still batting around .180, if that.  He either hits the odd home run once every 30 or 40 at-bats, or he's just epic fail .  This has gone on way too long and the Braves need to ship this guy.  If he somehow turns it around and starts hitting and earning his damn paycheck, all I'll ask is what the hayull have you been doing the last two and a half years?

I'm also this close to saying the same about BJ Upton.  Good googlity goo, this guy has been awful.  He looks like a high school kid facing Major League pitching.  He's so overmatched it's not even funny.  I think he's right around .150 with 3 HR and 6 RBI.  Have you ever seen a team in MLB continue to put up with what these two have been doing?  We're 44 games into the season.

So shortly after my rant, BJ Upton hits a solo shot.  He's skyrocketed his totals to .156 BA.  4 HR 7 RBI.

I guess as long as they keep winning...

Braves win 8-3.  Had it well in hand going to the 8th but Cory Rasmus, who I think just came up a day or two ago, looked like 5 day old, warmed over possum jizz.  Anywho...clean sweep at home.  6-0 home stand.

SI Cover jinx in full effect.

This week's cover shows the Cards starting 5.

And two are now on the DL, one out for the season, the other threw a bullpen session last night and had to stop after 20 pitches.

Going forward, 3 of the starting 5 are rookies.  The other two are Wainwright and Lance Lynn, who is in his second year.

I'd be shocked if we go to the all star game leading our division.

Fuck you. The Rangers have had 2 rookies in rotation all year. A third was called up when Ogando was placed on the DL. And yesterday, a 30 year old making his first in the big's replaced one of our other rookies who had to miss the start because of a blister.

If you are counting at home, that is 4 rookie pitchers that have made starts this year, with 2 being in the rotation all year. The only 2 pitchers that the Rangers have had all year that are in the permanent rotation are Yu Darvish and Derrick Holland. Matt Harrison, Alexi Ogando, Neftali Feliz, Colby Lewis, and Martin Perez are all missing out of the pitching staff.

If the Rangers Had Darvish, Holland, Feliz, Harrison, and either Lewis or Ogando as the number 5 starter....damn...

Fuck you.

You're 5 1/2 up.

We're 1 1/2, and the #2 team has the second best record in the NL, and the #3 team is tied with the Braves for the 3rd best record.

And because Houston is now in your division, you get 18 games against them.  We get Chicago, who always seems to have our number.

I think you guys will be ok.

So, we're roughly 46 games in.

AL East:  The Yankees have to be the surprise team of MLB.  Hardly recognized 3 guys in the starting line up to begin the season.  Really thought they'd struggle but they're 10 games over .500 with a 1/2 game lead on the Red Sox and 3 up on Baltimore.  The Blow Jays are one of the biggest flops to this point, 9 games out.

AL Central: Cleveland under Terry Francona is playing well.  Detroit is a 1/2 game back but I expect Detroit to take control at some point.

AL West: Rangers at 30-17, best record in the AL and a 5 game lead on Oakland.  They could run away and hide before it's all said and done.  The Angels and their $18 spwazillion dollar payroll are teh bust.

NL East:  Atlanta at 28-18 playing well at home and getting a little separation from Washington with a 4 game lead. Always have to be wary of the Phillies.

NL Central:  Cards with the best record in beisbolz by percentage points at 30-16.  The Reds and Pirates are 1.5 and 2 back respectively.  The Reds have a good club and should keep some heat on the Cards all year.  The Pirates are playing out dat ass standing at 28-18.  I can't name anyone on that team except McCutcheon, and I'm not even sure if that's how you spell it.

NL West:  SF, Colorado and Arizona are all tied for first. Helluva race but my pick is Frisco in the end.  When was the last time the Dodgers were relevant?  That used to be one of THE premier franchises in all of baseball.

Thoughts?  Surpirses?

So yesterday, Gattis goes yard while McCann hits 2 dingers.  I know Gattis has played a little left field this year along with his early catching duties while McCann was out.  McCann has been his old self since coming back.  Swinging the bat well. But right now, BJ Upton has the lowest batting average of any player in MLB with enough at-bats. (If what I heard on the radio this morning is correct)  Either way, he's hitting .148 with 155 plate appearances.  So, here's Upton sucking it up to high heaven.  I find some way to get Gattis in the game as often as possible and simply replace Upton with Jordan Schafer.

Schafer is fast as hayull and is hitting right at .300 with far less than half the at-bats as Upton.  He's got 2 HR and 6 RBI basically from the lead off spot plus 6 stolen bases....to Upton's 3.  Gattis has 22 less plate appearances than Upton and he's leading the team in RBI.  Ideally, I teach Gattis to play 2nd base and put Schafer in for Upton and make both those clowns sit at the end of the bench until they can be traded or released.

A check of their roster shows the only name I recognized from their pitching staff is AJ Burnett.  Russell Martin is one of the catchers (Not sure if he starts) and you have veterans Gaby Sanchez (Marlins) and Brandon Inge (Everybody) on the infield.  Again, after McCutchen, I honestly don't recognize one name.  And I like to think I follow baseball pretty close.

Good for the game to have teams like Pittsburgh and Oakland being competitive.

Cards have another rookie pitcher making his MLB debut, aTm's Michael Wacha, drafted last year, and zoomed up the minors.

Rookie starters are 9-3 record and 2.33 ERA, and rookie relievers are 4-1 record, 17 holds, a 2.38 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 45 innings.

Cf. Schaefer
Ss. Simmons
Rf. Upton
Lf. Gattis
1b. Freeman
C. McCann
3b. Johnson
2b. Uggla.

Based on what has been earned on the field, that would be the correct lineup. And Uggla is still pissing me off, but he gets a lot of walks, so I'm not as mad.

I don't see where you can do anything else but use these guys.  I'd get Francisco his at-bats though.  He just looks like a guy that only needs a chance to play every day and he'd bust loose.  Quick check of the stats. Justin Upton leads the team with 33 walks with Uggla 2nd at 26.  BTW, Schafer has an OBP of .419 while good ole BJ is at .236.  Right now, Schafer and Gattis have to be your every day guys.

I hate Juan fatsisco.  He swings for the fence with every at-bat, and strikes out in clutch situations everytime.  Speaking of which, Freeman on third with no outs; walk McCann, Uggla strikes out, fatsisco grounds back to the pitcher and BJ Upton strikes out. Yeah...I think the numbers are the Rangers are 28-12 over the last 40 games with the Red Sox. The Sox will miss Yu this time though, so that helps.

In June, The Rangers play 20 straight games and of the 26 games they play in June, 23 of them are against teams with .500 or better records. Could be interesting to see how June ends up...

The Braves win in walk-off fashion last night with A. Simmons driving in the winning run in the 10th.  Trying to help out the Cards with 2 straight wins over the Pirates.

I have to find something negative though.  Last night, Gattis came up to pinch hit. (Intentionally walked) The announcers were talking about what a great year he was having but said twice....Freddie can't find a place for him with the resurgence of BJ Upton and Jason Heyward.  Resurgence???  I know BJ has hit a couple of home runs lately but last night's HR "raised" his average to .155.  2 home runs in 5,266 at bats doth not a resurgence make.

The Braves are playing as well as anyone right now with 3 starters batting well under .200.  Just think where they'd be if these guys could bat even .240

For the Wench,

stolt from the sportspickle,

1. The Houston Astros is a baseball organization that plays in Major League Baseball, widely considered the premier professional baseball league in the world!

2. The 2013 Astros will have an All-Star!

3. This year the Astros have beaten nine different MLB teams! The Rangers, Mariners, Angels, Indians, Yankees, Tigers, Pirates and Royals have all fallen to the Astros!

The path of the righteous but untalented man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish fucking owners and the tyranny of evil greedy men. Blessed is she who, in the name of charity and good will, agonizes and suffers over the weak Suckasstros as they crawl like mewling newborn kittens through the valley of darkness that is the AL, for she is truly her brother's keeper and the rememberer of lost indignities, since lo, it is only her memory of their former glory that abideth them in her heart still. The Suckasstros (hey, my iPad does an auto fill on that word now... Sweet.) are trading pitcher Bud Norris tomorrow. That means there is exactly one player left on the team that I have heard of before - Jason Castro, the catcher.

The local car dealers have to pay extra for the caption that says "Houston Astros Player" or else the spokesman in their commercial is just a random dude in a jersey. No idea who the fuck they are.

*sigh* This is so fucking depressing. I love baseball.

Where we at?  A little over 50 games to go in the season and the Braves have opened up an 11 game lead.  The memory of Gonzales' Goons blowing about the same lead a couple of years ago is still fresh so I'm not counting said chickens before they hatch.  However, this team does appear to be gaining momentum right now as opposed to trying to hold on.  On a 6 game win streak and the last 3 against the Rockies have been fun to watch.  Everyone in the line up is hitting the way you know they can...except Chopp...err, Uggla, who just fell back below the Mendoza line.  But I've come to accept that he's rarely going to get on base, but he will wind up with good production.  21 HR and 51 RBI so....

The Braves are hot right now but realistically, they've been barely above .500 since the 12-1 start so I know it will tighten up before it's over.  The Cardinals are showing a Jap...wait...a Taiwanese...no...a Chink in the armor, having lost 6 straight but the reality is, one of their best players went on the DL and they've been on the road to the two hottest teams, besides L.A., in the National League.  The race between them and the Pirates is going to be fun to watch but I expect the Cards to come out on top.  Don't think it'll matter because one will win the division and the other should be the wild card.  Yes, the Dodgers are on fiyah and energized by You Squeal Pig, but I think they're peaking way too early and should drop back to the pack.

Question: anyone ever seen what Texas has done the last 3 nights?  3 walk-off homers.  Dizzam!!!!  It may have been done before but that's some pretty bad ass stuff right there.

Pirates are good.  Really good.  Hard to believe that it's been since the Sid Bream Slide that they had a winning record.  Have the Braves played them yet this year?

Cards have something like 18 of the next 24 games at home, and really need to get on a winning streak to make up for the 3-8 road trip.  Included in that 18 games at home is a 3 game set vs ATL and a 3 game set vs PIT.

For STL, if Allen Craig can come back healthy, I like our chances to go deeper into October.  Hard to say what starting pitching will be like with 3 rookies in the rotation.

If the Braves play anything like they have been recently, it wouldn't matter if they faced the Bad News Bears.  They'll get shellacked. Until last night, I was honestly wondering if they would hold on to the division lead.  The lead had gone from 16 to 8 in just over a week and the Nats just couldn't lose.  Lose last night and it would have been a 7 game lead with what..11 to play?  Sad, but they've been just that bad.

Quote
OAKLAND -- Like the Angels, Josh Hamilton has been in season-salvaging mode for the last month or so.

The designated hitter gave his team some reason for hope Wednesday when he hit a tying, two-run home run against closer Grant Balfour in the ninth inning and a go-ahead sacrifice fly to left field against nemesis Jerry Blevins in the 11th to lead the Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Oakland A's.

The first four months of 2013 were a nightmare for Hamilton, who on Aug. 7 was hitting .217 with a .271 on-base percentage, .397 slugging percentage, 16 home runs, 51 runs batted in.

But in 36 games since, Hamilton has a .328/.399/.526 slash line with five home runs and 21 RBIs to raise his average to .245. The Angels have won 19 of 26 games.

I expect McCann to be gone this year and Gattis take over behind the dish.  Agree on Chris Johnson.  He wasn't someone who had a hot streak. He was consistent all season long. Never waivered from that .320 to .333 range.  The BJ and Cho....err, Uggla thing is a huge problem.  Uggla has now had what...3 years of complete and utter fail at the plate.  One year, I can understand.  3 years?  Hopeless.  BJ obviously had a horrible year and the thing that worries me is he looked so overmatched all year long.  He looks like he weighs 135 soaking wet and swings like a high schooler against major league pitching.  He just can't have completely lost it after doing what he's done in the past.

Priority One:  New...PROVEN hitting Corch.

Priority TWO:  Go get some starting pitching.  I think it spoke volumes that after Hudson went down, the Braves did what they've been doing for seemingly the last 10 years.  Nothing.  Remember the Braves run during the 90's and well into 2000?  They always went out and at least TRIED to get that other piece of the puzzle.  Not just talking about pitching here but from Marquis Grissom to Fred McGriff to Kenny Loftin to Greg Maddox etc. they went and got what they thought they needed.  Why the hell would we be throwing Freddy Garcia in the game that meant the entire season?  So, they threw Medlen, Minor, Wood and Garcia at the Dodgers?  (I think that was the rotation)  Would that scare the Gwinnett Braves?  Jake Peavy was out there.  Nope, he's pitching for the Sox...who are moving on to the ALCS.

I'm thinking that J.D. Drew trade that sent us Jason Marquis, Ray King, and some minor leaguer named Adam Wainwright worked out pretty well for us.

Haven't watched much of the playoffs this year but I have watched a good bit of the first two games of the series.  Pulling for the Sachs of Fenway Pahk.  No ties to Bahstahn.  Just jumped on the bandwagon years ago to have someone in the AL to pull for to beat the damn Yankees.

Since I haven't watched much playoff ballz, last night was the first time I have seen Wacha pitch for the Cards.  Damn!!! That guy is nasty. And unless you are disregarding everything else he throws and guessing 100% correctly that his change is coming....you ain't coming within a foot of that pitch.

Amazing to see the discipline of the Boston hitters last night though.  Able to get his pitch count up high by laying off things that are a fraction of an inch out the zone.

And Wacha is twentyfuckingtwo.  I just hope his arm doesn't blow up.

Anyone see the ESPN special on the BoSox 4 game comeback against the Yankmees in 04'?  It was on last night.  May have been on before but I'd never seen it.  You don't have to be a Boston fan to get into it.  Totally different perspective.  A lot of scenes you would never normally see.  This was the series where Schilling had blood on his sock and a lot of people claimed it was fake.  I had never seen any footage of Schilling's ankle but they showed it last night and it was unreal that the guy threw any pitches, much less 100 in an ALCS.

Anyway, whether it was Boston, Atlanta, St. Louis...whoever.  It was cool watching the Yankees go up 3-0 in a series and then get swept out of the series.

And the riot that ensued from arod getting caught cheating with that fag move slapping the ball out of the glove to avoid a tag. They went ballistic. Did you really want to win the game like that? Yes they did. That's sad.

The Connors one after it was pretty good too. Gotta love Connors and Johnny Mc. Cocky sumbitches.

Ed Zachary.  I was glad to see the umps get that one right.  And then see Arod plead his case and motioning like, "I was just running...my arm came up and hit his glove while I was running".  Dumbass.

Another one that I've watched a couple of times is the documentary on Steve Bartman in the Cubs/Marlins series.  It's amazing that nobody wants to admit that the game was lost on the very next swing that sent a routine grounder to the SS that he flat out dropped.  Instead, they want to blame Bartman for not allowing Alou a chance at what may or may not have been a great catch at the wall.

My favorite MLB teams are Atlanta, Boston, Oakland and whoever is playing the Yankees.

2004 was a great, great year for me.  Had started my own business, sold our first big contract and was busier than I ever imagined I would be.

Auburn went undefeated and should have played for the NC.

Braves won the division and then, per usual tanked in the playoffs.  Lost to the Ass-throws of all teams.  People hail Bobby Cox but I just have to say this..

The guy had Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux. Avery was there. Hudson was there.  He had Chipper Jones. He had Furcal and Andruw Jones. He had McCann. He had Javy and Sheffield. He had Big Cat. He had Pena. He had Klesko.  McGriff, Lofton, Lemke. You could have made a quality All Star team from "former Braves" for years.  He had amazing talent and what did he do in the postseason?

Seriously.

Regular Season wins and post-season result:
1991: 94 lost WS to Twins 4-3
1992: 98 Lost WS to Blue Jays 4-2
1993: 104 Lost NLC to Phillies 4-2
1994: 68 No Playoffs (strike year?)
1995: 90 Won WS over Indians 4-2
1996: 96 Lost WS to Yankees 4-2
1997: 101 Lost NLCS to Marlins 4-2
1998: 106 Lost NLCS to Padres 4-2
1999: 103 Swept 4-0 in WS by Yankees
2000: 95 swept 3-0 by Cards in NLDS
2001: 88 Lost NLCS to Diamondbacks 4-1
2002: 101 Lost NLDS to Giants 3-2
2003: 101 Lost NLDS to Cubs 3-2
2004: 96 Lost NLDS to Astros 3-2
2005: 90 Lost NLDS to Astros 4-1
2006, 2007, 2008, 2009: No postseason
2010: 91 Lost NDLS to Giants
2011: Garcia takes over and has continued the trend of SUCKING in the playoffs.

I have now decided that Cox is vastly overrated.  Had amazing talent and could pile up regular season wins, but when it came playoff time was consistently outcoached by LaRussa, Leyland and every other jackhole in the business.

It's like giving Sonny Smith love for being a great coach at AU.  I could have coached a team with Barkley, Person, Lockhart and Morris and made the NCAA Tournament. Just roll the freaking ball out there.

Anyway, forget Cox and all the squandered opportunity for dynasty I now plainly see. Back to 2004.

The Red Sox.  I hate the Yankees almost as much as I hate Alabama and became a Sox fan when I was a kid just because they hated the Yankees too.  1918 and 1957 are the same to me, basically.  Same taunts, same entitled asses making them.

2004 was special. Ortiz, Manny, Varitek, Pedro, Schilling... Essentially Nick, Cam, Darvin, Onterrio and Dyer (or in 2004 Ronnie, Carnell, Carlos, Jason and Courtney/Ben/Devin) in my mind.

I was staying in Montgomery and woke up an entire hotel floor the night  Ortiz hit the 12th inning homer.

What was I talking about again?

Hard to not like Ortiz, as bad as he's kicked our ass in the WS.

Like I've said before, I'm happy to be in the WS, glad that the young arms are getting experience, and aside from Game 1, I've been happy with the pitching, Sox will get their runs.  Baffled at some of Matheny's moves, why bring in a lefty to face Gomes in game 4 when we all know he'll chase heat.  Could have left Lynn in.

But holy shit, we have our work cut out for us in the off season.  Need a 3B, a SS, and a CF.  You get below Molina, and Cards are just giving away outs.  I hope we trade Freese to the Cubs.

Only faced St Louis/LaRussa twice.  1996, where the Cards were up 3-1 in the NLCS, and Atlanta came back to win in 7 and then in 2000, where St Louis swept.  I think he more than held his own against TLR.

What Kaos said right there.  Except the part about staying in Montgomery.  I was never a fan of the Cox.  Except that one night in Biloxi when I got drunk and....but I digress.  The stats speak for themselves.  You don't make the playoffs that many times, only to fizzle fo schnizzle 16 out of 17 times.  Talent out the ass for years but they went about their business...like a business.  While every team in the other dugout was on the top step wearing rally caps.  If Cox wasn't caught on camera in the dugout with his thumb 3 inches up his nose, trying to pull out a nugget, he was waddling out to home plate to get thrown out of the game.

I'm going to give Freddie a pass for a little longer.  Two things need to happen.  They need to hire a new hitting coach.  Have no idea how they ran away with the division with so many guys hitting like shit all year.  Most importantly, get off the damn pocket book and buy some starting pitching.  The rotation they went into the playoffs with was putrid.  About the best ATL could roll out there was Kris Medlen while the Dodgers sent Clayton Kershaw to the bump twice.

But aside from the Yankees/Joe Torre, which manager won multiple world series titles during the span that Cox was at Atlanta?  Gaston in Toronto and Francona in Boston are the only 2 that come to mind.

No shame at all in winning "only one" world series.  Other NL teams were flat out jealous of the Braves success.  No question about it.

Your facts and logic have no place here.  Be gone!!!  I think the thing for us Bravo fans has always been kind a "So what, they're just going to bow out in the playoffs".  And you have to admit, 16 times out of 17 gets pretty damn old.  I guess things could be worse.  We could be Cub or Astro fans.  But as crazy as this sounds, it's hard to get excited about the regular season knowing the odds are heavily (Probably 127:1 or 15/6ths) stacked against you doing anything in the playoffs.  In all seriousness, is it better to be a Cub fan and hope this is the year you put it together and make a run at the playoffs, or realize that no matter what happens, your 1st round opponent is going to crush your hopes.  The Braves played L.A. this year.  I didn't watch 2 innings of the entire series.

The Sox got the timely hits early while the Cards had several chances to get right back in it but couldn't get any 2 out hits with RISP.  Loved the beards for a season.  Now it's time to break out the hedge trimmers and shear that shit off.

6-9 hitters on the cards were giving away outs.  David Freese was just horrible with runners on the bases.  WE!!! is pissed that Freese didn't have this post season in 2011.

Even though the scores don't indicate good pitching by the Cards, you hold a team to sub .200 batting, you're doing something ok.  Just timely hitting by the Red Sox, tip your cap, and move on.

With the Cards having starters Waino, Lynn, Garcia, Kelly, Miller, and Wacha under contract for the next few years, and Tyler Lyons, Trevor Rosenthal and Carlos Martinez (bullpen guys this post season) who are being groomed as starters, I expect one of them to be traded (Lynn or Miller) for either a SS or a 3B (maybe bundle in Freese or Jay).  Cards have one of the better outfields in the minors, Oscar Taveras, so I think Jay is gone for sure (can move Craig to LF, play Adams at 1B).

I think the future is bright, and we should be contending for NL Central Titles the next few years.

Again, Sox were the better team these past 3 weeks, and it showed.  You tip your hat, say congrats, and get ready for spring training.

I said the whole season until I see otherwise the cards were the team to beat. Up and down the roster the cards look to be a better overall team. Sox just got hot. Or should I say, their starting pitching and ONE of their hitters got hot. Papi hit .688 for the WS and seems to have increased his bat speed at age 37...wtf?

That's the great thing about baseball, once you get into the post season, anything can happen.  Completely different series if the cards batted just .250 with RISP.  But give credit to the Sox pitchers, they had it, and we didn't.

And I wonder if the same thought that were going through my head when Papi came up were the same thoughts that went through all of baseball when Pujols of 2001-2011 came up to bat.

What other manager was in the playoffs pretty much every year?  On paper, based just on sheer talent, Atlanta should have won four or five titles.

I'm glad I saw the Braves win one.  Not spoiled or ungrateful.  But at the same time, losing in the post-season year after year after year to upstart teams that usually just dropped off the radar the next season was pretty frustrating.

Padres?  Really?  Was in the playoffs for only the second time in history.  And you lose to that team?

Cox was a great regular season manager, but he never seemed to make the right moves or motivate the team in the post-season.  So much talent. So little to show for it.

OK.  It's November 1st.  i started it, so I should finish it.

I officially declare this year's Bitch and Moan to be closed, so that we may focus on MUCH important stuff like the remainder of college football season and how much food we can gorge ourselves with on Thanksgiving and whether or not we've been so naughty this year that Santa permanently removes us from his list (for those of us still hanging on by a toenail or two) and what bowl game we are going to be attending.

Oh, and fuck all y'all, but especially the Suckasstros.

Peace out, bitches. Spring training is just around the corner.
