Title: The Official 2012 MLB Bitch and Moan Thread
Post by: Tiger Wench on April 04, 2012, 10:30:43 AM
Well, bitches, the most frustrating time of the year for me is back.  Football is so close I can taste it in the air, but not quite.  Basketball sucks, so that's out.  Golf on TV puts me to sleep.  So all that leaves is baseball.

I love baseball.  I learned at an early age to keep score the old fashioned way, with a pencil and a scorebook, and I was hooked.  It's a thinking man's game, requiring an appreciation of the nuance behind the strategy.  It's team versus team, but also man versus man every time a new player steps into the batter's box to face the man on the mound.

One would think that I would be giddy as a school girl on Opening Day.  And not so long ago, you would have been right.  A fresh start, hopes for the post season, everybody has a chance.  Maybe this is our year, the hell with the curse, that young phenom from the minors is gonna be a star...

And then I wake up and remember that I am an Astros fan.

And that we have a new owner of shady character, with no real baseball experience, one who cannot be any cheaper than Drayton McClain in terms of spending money to rebuild the team, but who also seems to be of uncertain financial means.

And that Carlos Lee is still on the team, still drawing his over priced and undeserved paycheck.

And that our farm system is so lackluster, and sucks so much ass, that we may never have a pipeline again.

And that the word is that at least two thirds of the infield positions and at least one outfield position are going to be platooned, because we do not have a a single player in any of those positions who has shown himself to be a playmaker, a complete package, who even has the fundamental baseball skills necessary top play an entire game at one position (see comment about about suckass farm system).

And that it doesn't really matter if they platoon anyway, because when I look at the Opening Day roster, I recognize maybe, MAYBE, three names.

Yet for at least a moment today, I will pause and offer up a silent prayer that things are not as bad as they seem, that all the worry will be for naught, that these young, inexperienced players will take their shot at the Big Show seriously and go out and try to prove all the naysayers wrong.  That the next A-Rod or Jeter or Hamilton is out there waiting make a difference.

And then I remember again that I am an Astros fan.

Fuck me.

At least you only have one more year of facing Pujols in the NL Central..

Oh wait.  Nevermind.

I hope everytime you face that fuck next year, your manager puts a bounty on him that is so severe, it gets the Astros banned in every sports league, up to and including the NHL and the WNBA.

Since the Braves made very few moves in the off season after that epic finish last year...I have been sporadically checking on them this spring.  Started off like warmed over cat turds but played a little over .500 the second half.  Just checked the roster to see who they acquired to take Chipper's place while on the DL.  And they got.....drum roll...somebody named Juan Ramon Francisco...or something like that.  Career minor league piece of shiot from what I can tell.  Oh, but the good news is I noticed they picked up 147 year old, Livan Hernandez to bolster that pitching staff.

I don't recall being less excited about the start of a Braves season.  They may come out of the gate kicking ass but after last season's collosal collapse and no real moves in the off season....

When I read that my Cubs hired Theo Epstein, my first thought was "this is finally the year."  Over the course of teh last few months though, I have seen typical Cubs personnel moves, and the hiring of Dale Sveum.  Really?  Dale Sveum?  How the hell do you even pronounce that?  All of which lead me to the same conclusion that I have come to for the last 15 Aprils...they're still shitty.

At least they hit the free-agent market hard and got a known commodity for 1st base in Pujols Fielder Bryan LaHair.

Yeah, I'm pumped.

TW - I would tell you to convert to the Bravos (like I have the last 3 years) but if the regular season is anything like the Spring Training season, then the Bravos will have as much suckage as the Astros. At least we can all suffer together.

The Astros cut him... not sure if that means we are that fucking stupid for cutting him or y'all are that fucking stupid for signing him.

Either way...

I was a Braves fan my whole life until ten years ago when I moved to Houston.  You gotta support the hometown team.

Either way, they both are gonna suck so not much difference...

Now that I have relatives in Houston, I have a reason to get out to a Suckastros game.  Question...weren't they considering a name change to the Colt 45's or something like that?  Is that happening?

The bar in center field doesn't shut down until 1 hour after the last out.

They also don't mind if you cheer for the Cards, and Jim Edmonds his a 3 run shot in the top of the first, ruining the shutout.

I'm stoked to see Tyler Pastornickaliaus get a chance at short.  Plus, Prado, McCann, Heyward and Uggs had good at-bats during spring training.

Although, I am concerned by the lack of LHP in the starting rotation, and the fact that the Braves apparently had an extra 1.2 million to blow and spent it on that fat fucking homerun machine, Livan Hernandez.  If he isn't optioned to the Mississippi Braves, I'll be pissed.  Of course, it better be after April 22 as I'm going to see the MS Braves take on the BHam Barrons that day.  I'll be pissed if I have to watch that fat fuck in person.

That was their original name WAY back in the day, before they were renamed Astros to reflect Houston's contribution to the space program.  I do think that I heard the new owner talking for about 30 seconds about changing the name back to the Colt45s since the NASA influence is pretty much gone out here with the end of the space shuttle program.  However, local backlash was swift and negative, and he shut up pretty damn quick.

As much as I disliked Uncle Drayton, I am VERY wary of the new guy too.  Just not too sure about him.  Time will tell.

Is it time to start rethinking the Gonzales head corching thing?  Probably premature but something or someone needs to light a fire under this bunch.  Whats frustrating is that just about everyone in that line up has proven he can do gooder.  The collapse the last month of the season was pathetic to watch.  I had absolutely zero confidence in anyone getting a hit at any time.  They all looked overmatched at the plate virtually every at bat.  I watched a little this weekend and got the same feeling.

I'm still a little bitter about that.

On another note, the Rangers have 2 losses on the season, both at the hands of Nathan...the closer. Yes, the only losses of the year are supposed to be automatic wins...

On the bright side, the Rangers look damn good...with their only real weakness being the old ass surgically impaired closer...

If the Braves fall apart (which they have the last 2 seasons), Ive tended to pull for the Rangers come October. Gotta keep it in the South. And yes, they look damn good. The Mgr is doing something right the last 2-3 years.

Somewhat encouraging to see the Braves playing like they are right now.  After an 0-4 start, they've gone 6-1 and have been scoring a lot of runs.  Batting averages are still horrible overall but they didn't hit at all during that 0-4 stretch.  Heyward is off to a great start, complete reverse of last year.  Looks comfortable at the plate.  However, Chopper's spawn is off to another blistering .195 start with no production whatsoever.  Bourn did absolutely nothing for the first 5-6 games but he appears to be getting back on track and they really need Freeman to get his ass in gear.  Great things were predicted for him this year, probably like no other Brave, and he's hitting around .200.

McCann started slow too but is hitting over .400 in his last 7 games.  Only 11 games in and too early to tell but they just can't have Uggla, Freeman and Bourn continue to suxxors the first quarter of the season. I still love this line up but too many of these guys have gone into prolonged slumps over the last year plus.

Question.  I'm assuming the Cubs would be considered a "Big market" team.  I looked at the roster and I'm thinking, what happened?  How did they get in this position?  Are they just not willing to spend the money and go get some name players or are they already paying too much for what they have.  Outside of the the SS, Fidel Castro, who...(Wait, self imposed 5 game suspension) is obviously a bright young talent, the only names I really recoginze..non-pitchers...are Soriano, Johnson and Byrd.  All 3 are in the their mid-thirties.

Am I wrong in assuming they have the money to spend?  I was pissed about the Braves standing pat in the off season but have come to realize those days of going out and getting 2-3 new pieces of the puzzle every year are gone.  We got an Uggla 2 years ago. What's your take on teh baby bears?

That's why I am puzzled this season as well.  After they hired Epstein away from Mr. Kotter, I really had high hopes.  So far, his big spash has turned into a trickle.  They had a chance to spend some money on either of 2 big time 1st basemen, and two big whiffs...

They seem to have plenty of money to spend most years, but now that they have the promise in GM to go along with it, they just aren't spending.  Maybe they are saving up for a huge payroll next season...who knows?

They're going to have to unless they see their farm system as loaded with incredible talent.  That roster is not going to do squat this year or next and the 3 names I mentioned will just be a year older.  Baseball needs the Cubs to get off their asses and become a major player.

Still the only 2 losses of the season belong to blown saves by the closer. The Rangers could be 12-0. I will take 10-2 though...

Aaannnd the Bravos hammer out 16 hits and 14 runs to take the series from the Mets.  Spawn of Chopper finally contributed something with his first HR...as did Freeman.  Averaging 7 runs a game over their last 8.

And yes, Tejas looks damn good.  Watched a good it of the game with Bahstahn last night.  Holland was sharp.

I became a bandwagon Red Sox fan years ago, mainly because they're the chief nemises of the Yankmees, plus I just needed an American League team to pull for.  I knew Bobby Valentine would be a putz of a manager.  I don't like the guy...don't like his voice...don't like his managing style....he's a putz.

I imagine so.  I was at Mickey Mantles summer before last.  Slow week night, not a huge amount of folks in there.  The Yankmees were playing Minnesota on the tube and a NY player hit a HR.  First few innings....no biggee.

You'd have thought that HR won the World Series.  This one table erupts..."Yeeeeeeaaahh, SUCK IT TWINS....Yankees are kickin' your ass.....Yeeeaahhh...Yankeeeeeeeeeessss"

Stayed up til about 10:15 watching the Bravos out in Arizona.  They had just taken a 5-2 lead so I hit the hay.  Just saw where they won 10-2 with 16 hits, two of which were 2-run homers by Freeman.  Looks like he's busted out of his early season slump.  No way they keep this up with this kind of production but damn, they've been hitting the ball big time lately.  Funny, I had forgotten til the other day that Hudson isn't even in the rotation yet.

True dat.  And it was fun to watch the 2010 version of our Auburn Tigers when they were scoring like that.

You certainly don't expect averaging 8-9 runs a game and that will end quickly.  But I still say this lineup can get you 5-6 most every night and right at double digit hits.  Absolutely no reason to go into the dive they took late last season.  If Hudson comes back strong, the rotation of Hudson, Hanson, Jurgens Lotion,  and Beachy or Minor as the 4th/5th starters should be solid enough to keep them in contention.  But you still just kind of sit back and wait on the Phillies to hit their stride.

I guess they've revised the Baseball 101 book since I read it.  But that was many moons ago.  Last night, I watched a few innnings of the Braves/Dodgers and twice in 3 innings, I woke the wife up yelling at the TV.  In the first inning, speedy Michael Bourn gets on first.  Prado, comes up and I'm thinking....just play it by the book (The old one) and bunt him over and let your 3 and 4 hitters come up with a fast guy in scoring position.  Pick up a run...off to a good start.  Nope.  They wind up not scoring.  Two innings later, they get the first two on at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Again I'm saying, just bunt and move the runners over...Jack Wilson is at the plate...he's the non-hitting utility guy who can at least bunt.  Uuuhh...no.  Guess who didn't score that inning?

Is bunting just a lost art in baseball?  Does it require too much effort mentally for a manager to call for a bunt?  Do they even teach it anymore to major league players?  Even when you do see someone at the major league level try to bunt...they can't.  I literally looks like it's been since little league when they last tried to bunt.  Frustrating.

This was a very well written article I read yesterday about Pujols.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=16628 (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=16628)

Quote
Pebble Hunting
Albert Pujols Never Walks

by Sam Miller

In a press conference at the Winter Meetings, Angels GM Jerry Dipoto was asked why Albert Pujols was worth a long-term deal when so many other stars have disappointed. Here’s Dipoto:

I'll say this, that in regard to the evolution of a hitter, as hitters begin to age, into their 30s, to whatever point you can project, there's a certain quality or trait in a hitter, the patience, that they exhibit. Albert has had an extraordinary career in regard to maintaining control over the strike zone.

There are all sorts of reasons to love Albert Pujols, and all sorts of reasons to give literally tons of money to him. One of those reasons, the one Dipoto identified, is that he has always walked a lot. Of course, walks can be misleading. Sammy Sosa once drew 116 walks, and Daric Barton once drew 110 walks, and nobody would draw the same conclusions about Sosa and Barton based on their walk totals. But Albert Pujols seemed to be somewhere between Sosa and Barton, a guy who drew walks because pitchers respected him and a guy who drew walks because he knew how to draw walks. In 2009, he drew 115 walks, leading the National League and setting a career high. Of the 115, 44—a record for right-handed hitters—were intentional, but that still left 71 that Pujols drew honestly, the 15th-most in the National League, and right in line with Pujols’ career totals:

    2001: 63 unintentional walks
    2002: 59
    2003: 67
    2004: 72
    2005: 70
    2006: 64
    2007: 77
    2008: 70
    2009: 71
    2010: 65

And then 2011 happened. Albert Pujols finished fifth in MVP voting, finished third in the NL in home runs, but walked unintentionally just 46 times, a career low. Even the number 46 is a bit misleading. In the second half, he drew just 15 unintentional walks. Jeff Francoeur drew 15 unintentional walks in the second half of 2011. Excluding intentional passes, Jeff Francouer and Albert Pujols walked the same number of times in the second half. I’m going to keep repeating this fact until each of you has audibly said “wow.” Jeff Francouer and Albert Pujols walked the same number of times in the second half of 2011. Jeff Francouer and Albert Pujols walked the same number of times in the second half of 2011. We ready to move on?

And then Albert Pujols switched teams and kept the low walk rate: three unintentional walks in the first 16 games of the season. Albert Pujols is an entirely new hitter than he used to be. This is something to reckon with.

Is Albert Pujols swinging more?
In a minute, we’re going to look at the pitches Albert Pujols is swinging at. That’s a bit of a complicated question, because the pitch-location data is limited and, in some cases, inconsistent. But it’s very easy to answer the question of whether he is swinging more.

2009: 42 percent
2010: 42 percent
2012: 49 percent

Yes, sample size, for sure. Albert Pujols has swung at more pitches this year, but because we're wary of sample size we know that it doesn’t mean he’ll keep swinging at more pitches this year—even if swing rate is just about fastest thing to stabilize.

But I skipped 2011 for a reason. Pujols’ swing rate in 2011 was 44 percent, which makes you think that 2012 would probably regress toward the higher, but not too high, swing rate of 2011. But 44 percent in 2011 is really misleading.

First half of 2011: 41 percent
Second half of 2011: 49 percent

There is no gradual trend here. Albert Pujols never swung at 44 percent of pitches. He just started swinging at 49 percent, darned near overnight, and Albert Pujols swings at 49 percent of pitches now. I’m less concerned about the sample-size thing knowing that.

Is Albert Pujols swinging at worse pitches?
Walks are great, but if Pujols is simply swinging at more hittable pitches it might not be bad at all. He doesn’t seem to be swinging more at hittable pitches.

According to our plate-discipline numbers, Pujols swung at 26 percent of pitches outside the zone in 2010 and 29 percent in 2011. We haven't calculated his 2012 rate yet, but StatCorner's numbers have been similar to our numbers and show a spike: 27 percent in 2010, 33 percent in 2011, 35 percent this year. StatCorner's figures include intentional balls, too; Pujols sees fewer intentional balls now, so on pitches that require him to make a decision, the difference is growing even more quickly. (In case you're wondering, the overall swing rates above exclude intentional balls, so that isn't an explanation for why Pujols is swinging at more pitches overall.)

He’s also swinging at more off-speed pitches. Year-by-year swing percentages for sliders+curves+changeups:

2009: 40 percent
2010: 40 percent
First half 2011: 39 percent
Second half 2011: 47 percent
2012: 53 percent

In 2011, Pujols saw 113 sliders that were about a half-inch or more off the plate outside. Sixty-four of them came in the first half, and Pujols swung at 12 of those. Forty-nine of them came in the second half, and Pujols swung at 17 of those. Fifteen fewer outside sliders, five more swings.

So, yes, Albert Pujols is swinging at worse pitches. In some cases, the very worst pitches:

Is Albert Pujols simply pressing?
I mean, maybe. But, specifically, did he show the same swinging tendencies when he started slowly last year, before he started hitting again? No. Through June 1, 2011, when Pujols had a .755 OPS and was coming out of the two worst full months of his career, he had swung at just 41 percent of pitches and just 37 percent of curve/change/sliders. As noted, Pujols began swinging more midway through the 2011 season, and the trend is perhaps accelerating during—but not necessarily because of—his slump.

Are pitchers being more aggressive and throwing Pujols more strikes?
In other words, is Pujols walking less because pitchers are simply walking him less? That doesn't seem to be it. According to our data, based on Mike Fast’s strike zone definitions, pitchers in 2010 threw 48 percent of pitches to Pujols in the strike zone, and 47 percent in 2011. Stat Corner’s numbers are similar to ours and show no significant rise for 2012. Pitchers also aren’t throwing him more fastballs this year than they did in 2009 and 2010.

Is this just noise?
It’s hard to imagine this is nothing. As noted above, swing rates stabilize almost immediately. Pujols’ swing rates have never shown much variance in his career. He has never topped 45 percent of pitches swung at. But going back to the All-Star break we have nearly two-thirds of a season’s worth of plate appearances, and he is swinging at nearly 20 percent more pitches than he had been. He is just a different hitter. Over the past three seasons, Todd Helton has swung at 41 percent of pitches, and Vernon Wells has swung at 49 percent of pitches. Albert Pujols has gone from Todd Helton’s approach to Vernon Wells’ approach.

I wouldn't nearly go so far as to say it's the reason Pujols has started slowly this year. He hit .319/.375/.584 in the second half of 2011, despite expanding his strike zone. It’s the reason he’s not walking, but it’s not necessarily the reason he’s not hitting. But, man. Ten years. Ten years means nearly infinite ways for things to go wrong, most of which we never see coming, and this might just be one of those ways we never saw coming. (“He has the strike-zone control of a hit-for-average, contact guy," Angels GM Jerry Dipoto reiterated this spring.)

The Angels signed Albert Pujols for 10 years because even the decline phase of a .328/.420/.617 hitter should be pretty good. It turns out they’re getting a different hitter entirely. Probably a great hitter, maybe still the best hitter, and if there's anything you take from this piece, I really hope it's not that Albert Pujols is anything less than awesome still. He is awesome still, and I hate all of you who quit reading way up there and think that I'm giving up on Pujols. But he's a different hitter. Are his eyes getting worse? Are his reactions getting worse? Is he guessing at pitches to compensate for slowed bat speed? Is he in his own head? Is this related to his wrist injury last June, the one he came back from with almost miraculous speed? Or is it all nothing, or even part of Pujols' evolution as a hitter, and will the next seven or eight years at least work out beautifully for the Angels? Quite possibly! But, man. Ten years.

He's no Brian LaHair...right Jarhead?

He's going to be the next Soto or Vina.  Guys who normally suck, but who morph into Lou Gehrig when we play each other.

This was a very well written article I read yesterday about Pujols.

Excellent article.

You can't blame Pujols really. He went with the most money and gets to live in southern California. And is guaranteed 10 years worth of lots of money.

But the Angels....HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

Absolutely right.  Nothing that any of us wouldn't have done.  Take the money.

However, his comments to Cardinals fans, his wife's comments about the organization.  They need to get better PR people.  His wife says the Cardinals insulted him?  They offer a 9/year 195M.  Pujols says no, he wants to be in the 25M a year category.  So Cards fire back with a 5 year, 125M deal.  And that's insulting?  Wish I could be insulted like that.

All he had to say is something like, "I really appreciate my time in St Louis, it's a great organization, the fans are great, but I think this is the best opportunity for me and my family," and I think 99% of Cardinals fans would have been fine with it.

But his wife gets on the air around Christmas time, and starts blasting people in the area for not donating money at Christmas time to their foundation.  "Donations are down about 60% from last year, and we think it's because he signed with the Angels."  Ya think?

That kind of shit can go a long way...

Bullshit. The Cards did not make him a star. The Cards won a couple of rings and made a fucking killing while Pujols played for them. Pujols would have been a star if he would have played for the Yankees, Pirates, Rays or Cardinals. The Cardinals didn't make him a star any more than they could make me a star. They paid him to play a game and he performed like he was paid to do. He happened to be a star that played for the Cards just like he would have been at any other team. The Cards didn't give him his god-given talent to hit a fucking baseball...

ummmm....ok. They somewhat discovered him when no one else saw anything. A select few in that organization chose to bring him up from minor league ball when most folks didn't think it was a wise decision. And ultimately, they PAID him and gave him a nice job for 10 years. Without the teams and the fans, these guys are just regular Joe Blows working a regular job. Pujols was a diamond in the rough that few people saw. The Cards gave him a chance.

Quote
Few major league teams were very interested in Pujols out of high school, but he was finally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13th round of the 1999 MLB Draft, with the 402nd overall pick.  However, Pujols initially turned down a $10,000 bonus and opted to play for the Hays Larks in Hays, Kansas in Jayhawk League of the National Baseball Congress instead. The Cardinals increased their bonus offer to $60,000; Pujols signed and was assigned to the minor leagues.

During the 2001 season, the team was preparing to send Pujols to Memphis-AAA. However, Pujols' outstanding play, combined with injuries on the big league roster, allowed Pujols the opportunity to begin the season in the majors. During spring training Mark McGwire reportedly told Tony La Russa "If you don't put this guy on the roster for the 2001 season, it might be one of the worst moves you make in your career."

Yes, the talent comes first and foremost.  However, the Cards paid him and marketed him to the city and major league baseball in general to be a mega star.

One of the most over-hyped, over-marketed "stars" in the history of sports to me was Chicago Bulls', Scottie Pippin.  Won what...6 world titles on Jordan's coattails and at one time was named one of the top 50 players in the history of the game. Bull Flappin Shit.

You both don't get it. Do either one of you honestly believe that if he was a marginal hitter, that the Cardinals would have made him into a star???

The Cards didn't make him into shit. They marketed him for their own fucking profit. It could have been Barry Bonds or Sammy Sosa and they would have done the same thing. They gave him a chance because there was a chance he could hit the ball...that's it...

Player 2: .143/.290/.268/.558, 11 BB, 14 SO, 1 HR, 4 RBI

I think he's pressing, and the media in LA isn't as forgiving as the media in St Louis.  He also had a manager in STL that would shield him from a good bit of that.

You could say the whole new pitchers in the AL thing, but he absolutely owned Derrick Lowe in the past, and Lowe made him look stupid.

But if I were an Angels fan, I'm not sure I would expect the 30HR-.300BA-100RBI line that we're used to.  Maybe a 20-.280-85 line might be more in line.

Werd.  In St. Louwee he proved many times over he was possibly the best in the game.  You guys knew any kind of "slump" wasn't going to last.  In LA, they paid out the ass for him and almost 25 games in, he hasn't hit his weight.

Who would have thought that of the team in 2006 that won the world series, the only player that would for sure be a life time Cardinal would have been Yadier Molina.  With Wainwright being a possible lifetime Cardinal, too (and I still can't believe the Braves traded him).

Have the Braves retired Glavine, Smoltz, or Maddux's number yet?  I assume Larry's number will be retired at the end of the year.

I loved watching Maddux pitch.  Proof you don't have to have a rocket for an arm to have success, it's all about pitch location and selection.

Don't quote me on that but I think they have retired them.  Pitching is what I did into college so I get into watching different styles of pitching and how they approach batters etc.  Maddux was incredible and probably fits in the thread about "If you can ball.."  Don't care how many times I watched him, I still couldn't grasp that hitters couldn't touch this guy.  Yeah, he developed an "out pitch" that tailed back across the plate to left hand hitters....but the guy never looked like he was throwing over 80 m.p.h.  I read one time where he said he knew where every hitter wanted it....and he'd give it to them....but juuuust a little off of where they wanted it.  Guy likes it low and inside, so I'm gonna' throw it low and inside...with just enough cut on it to make him beat it into the ground for a weak roller to second.

I think Huddy belongs in that thread as well. All of 5'9 - 5'10 on a good day and 155 lbs soaking wet at Auburn. And the guy hits almost .500 or something. Now he's 160 and with an ERA around 3-3.50 consistently. It just doesn't add up, but he makes it happen. Maddux had some nasty, wicked shit. When they shortened the strike zone and took away the corners, that's when he went downhill. He could paint that corner like Van Gogh.

Surprised no one has posted on the Braves/Phillies game from last night.  I watched a little early on and the Horseys jumped out to a lead with Halliday on the mound.  Switched it off and went out to eat.  Came back and the Braves had come from a 6-0 deficit to take an 8-6 lead.  From there, it got really wild.  Phillies went back up 9-8 then pushed it to 12-8.  The Braves come back in the bottom of the 8th and score 5 runs to take a 13-12 lead to the 9th with Kimbrel coming in.

He promptly walks one of the fastest guys in the league, who steals second.  Two ground balls later and they're tied at 13.  Braves threaten but don't score.  In the bottom of the 11th with one on....Chipper comes up.  He crushes one that's gone from the second it leaves the bat...aaaaannnd 5 feet foul.  A pitch or two later....no doubt.  Line shot into the right/center field bleachers for a walk off homer and a 15-13 win.  19 Braves hits.

As a fan, I was glad I stayed up and watched. But I knew it was pretty cool when they interviewed Chipper about 30 seconds after he crossed home plate and he said that was about as special a feeling as he's had in baseball.  Now, that's saying something.  Great game but the best thing for the Braves is it breaks an 8 game losing streak to the equestrials.

Almost turned it off when O'Felattio-erty gave up the 3 run shot to Ruiz. Left it on. Then the next inning Medlen implodes. I remember the announcer remarking "thats what happens when you play with fire", on the decision to pitch to Ruiz who got a bases clearing double. At that point I turned it off, 8th inning, down by 4, they are done. Read the paper this morning and bout shit myself.

If Cards starting pitching doesn't get unfucked quickly, this won't be the last time we get swept by a long shot.  I think in the past 8 or 9 games, we've had one starter go past the 6th.

I'm thinking instead of trading players, the Cards and the Braves need to just trade stadiums.

We're going to lose tonight, but I'll take a 10 hit (through 8) night any time.

Well, I'm a bitchin' and a moanin'.  Auburn doesn't make the tourney (No real surprise there) and the Bravos are in the midst of an 8 game losing streak. Yay!!!

8 games?  You call that a losing streak?  Pfft...

The Braves stink it up with average teams but then show out against the Cards. Its very weird and I don't care for it.

The National League East looks like it's going to be a horse race all year long.  A week ago the Braves had gone from 1st to virtually tied with the Phillies for last.  Suddenly, they took a series from Washington on the road and then swept the Marlins in Meeyami.  Now, they're 1 game out of first.  The Phillies have been sucking mightily for some reason this year.  Pretty much held the cellar most of the season.  I still look for them to get their shit together and make a run.

Okay...I'll let this one slide.  But I'm asking the BKG's to keep an eye on you.

You know, if either of these franchises would get off the pocketbooks, they'd kick some ass.  The Bravos have a great core of young players and veteran players sprinkled in.  But they did NOTHING in the off season.  Not a damn thing. They stood pat on a club that faded and failed last year like few have.  The Marlins at least made a real attempt to upgrade the roster and I think they'll be there at the end.

So Mike Minor pitches a shutout through 7, gets one out in the 8th and allows a base runner.  Now I understand if he pitch count is way high, but if it is, pull him before the 8th.  Why not let him work out of it, instead of bringing in Venters?  He's been streaky, and he's been terrible in pressure situations.  So what does he do?  Load the bases and gives up a grand slam.

Fredi is one or two more questionable calls away from me calling for his head.

Anyone watch the HR Derby last night.  I find myself watching it just about every year unless most of the big names decide not to enter.  Last night, Prince Fielder was launching some bombs into the fountain in KC. I have to say the most annoying thing about the derby is allowing Chris Berman to continue calling it. Fuck sake man, every HR is not a jaw dropping, mammoth shot for the ages.  Berman was funny as hell back in the early days of ESPN but he ran his course with me about 10 years ago.  And to let that slapstick fucker anywhere near a golf telecast booth is just

On a non-related baseballz note...way to go Red Sox

Youkilis had 11 hits in 23 at-bats for the White Sox (.478 average) with three home runs, 10 RBIs, seven runs, a .571 on-base percentage and .913 slugging percentage in six games last week. The White Sox went 5-1 during that span.

Cards are having a promotion, that for every HR Beltran hit, we get $1 of outfield seats.  Normally 20 bucks, they will sell for $8.  And it's for the series vs the Dodgers, so a quality opponent.

They did this a few years ago with Pujols, and he only hit 4.  Further indication that he's a douchebag who can go choke on a fat dick.

It's amazing how a new uniform can change your attitude about a guy.

Fielder was fun to watch but this Trumbo kid...who the fuck? Guy hit some monsters. He apparently hits the longest HR's in MLB statistically.

I sort of adopted the Red Sox as my American League team back about 10 years ago.  Mainly as the chief nemises of the Yankmees.  Can't recall who on here a week or two ago was talking about how shitty their fans are.  Probably so.  I imagine most fans in big cities have their fair share of assholes.  No offense Buzz, but just watch the Steve Bartman documentary.  Wow, that dud had to go into hiding.  Complete life changer because he reached for a foul ball. Anyhoo, Fenway Pahk is one of the sporting venues on my bucket list.  I wanted to do Wrigley but last year, I go the chance to stop at it and check it out a little.  The L Train stopped there for quite a while and you could see all down in it.  Pretty cool to kind of take it all in but now I don't care about making a special trip to it.

Not counting today's game vs the Astros, which they should win, the next 10 games will make or break the Cardinals season.

3 game set at Cincy
3 game set at Pitt
4 games at Washington.

Absolutely essential that they put some distance between themselves and the Pirates, now that we've climbed into the 2nd WC spot.

Hopefully they will nut up in the post season just from lack of experience in that climate. Also hoping Strasburg getting shutdown will screw their chemistry up enough. I hope for these things because the Braves just showed they can't stay with the Nats in a series straight up. Not right now anyway.

The Braves are doing something I've never seen before.  They've gone to a 6 man rotation and despite the recent losses, it's been effective.  They were naming off like the last 10-12 starts and how long each pitcher has gone and virtually all were into the 7th and beyond.  I recall Kimbrel pretty much giving out of gas last year at the end.

What I need is for the Rangers and Indians to fuck Tampa Bay and Oakland up these next three games.  I take back what I said about the Rangers earlier. I really don't expect the Royals to beat the Tigers.

I elude to CCT's post at this point. The question is: will the Braves collapse again? They are a good 3-4 games to the good on the wild card race.

A few interesting facts I found looking at the standings today:

The Braves have a pretty decent 100+ run differential on the year and are right at 20 games over .500. They have the 5th best record in MLB.

The Cardinals have the best run differential in MLB but only about the 7th or 8th best record. This tells me the Cards lose a lot of close games and win a lot of blowouts. Scares me a bit as a Braves fan if they get the other wildcard spot.

The Orioles have a -34 run differential even though they are 11 games over .500 and have the last wildcard spot. They look like they lose a lot of blowouts and win a lot of close ones. Just the opposite of the Cards.

Just thought that was interesting since all 3 are in the playoffs at the moment.

Bad news for the Pirates too is it looks like they are going to fade. McCutchen's BA is starting to dip now. Kind of knew this would happen to them.

Yes, that is the O's for the most part.  Either win tight games for the most part or get our asses kicked pretty good.  It has been both good and bad watching them this year.  I fear with this new WC rule that the Braves (even though I will laugh) will be that much better than the other WC team, but will have an off night and then the season will be over.

I kind of feel bad for the Pirates, I was hoping to see them get there in a way.  I likes me some underdogs.

Yep.

9-7 at home in one-run games, and 4-14 on the road.  And 3-9 in Extra Inning play.

Add that since the break, the starters have been outstanding.  Waino seems to have found his groove, he was 5-1 in the month of August with a sub 2.00 ERA.

Since the 19 inning loss to Pittsburgh last Sunday, the Cards have gone 5-1, while the Pirates have gone 1-6.

A few notes on the Braves.  Sitting at 18 games over .500 going into the series against the SD Fathers.  Chipper strained an oblique and is taking no chances.  Will let it heal before he gets back at it for the last month of his career.  Smart...those things will NOT heal unless you give it complete rest.  I know.  Gonzales has apparently had enough of Uggla's struggles and has him on a short arm...err, leash.  He's looking at match ups and if Uggla has struggled against a particular pitcher....he sits.  No more letting him work his way through it.  Hitting .206.  Freaking pathetic.

Oh, and Ben Sheets went on the 15 day DL with a "tired arm".  He's been retired for over 2 years and came back to the Braves after the All Star break.  Pitched lights out for his first 5 starts but his last few have been rough.  Just going to give it a rest before they head down the final stretch.

Okay, this is getting to be some pretty awesome stuff.  Braves pitcher, Chris Medlen, pitched 8 scoreless innings in a 2-0 win last night.  That makes 28 1/3 straight scoreless innings for him and the Braves have won 17 consecutive games he's started.  He doesn't throw all that hard.  Just changes speeds and throws strikes.

What kind of market is there going to be for Kyle Lohse in the off season?

If Carp comes back, I don't see the Cardinals trying to resign him (Carp, Waino, Garcia, Westbrook, Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly).  I was never a huge Lohse fan, but he's been the best pitcher for the Cardinals this season.  27 Starts, 14-2 record, 174 IP, 32BB, 107K, with a 2.64 ERA.  He wins 5 more of his no-descisions, and he's easily in the conversation for Cy Young this year.

None in Baltimore.  Angelos will not spend money on a pitcher.  I would imagine it all depends on who is available, who trades who, who resigns who and who lets who go.  I would imagine that the market for him will be pretty good though.  He is solid imo.  Had a couple of decent seasons in the early 2000's, a decent season or two in the mid-2000's and has been solid as a rock the past two years.  His only thing is he will be in his mid 30's I think.  That could hurt him.

Jamie Garcia is our lefty.

Home 4-2 2.82 ERA

Road 3-5 5.02 ERA

If we pitch Garcia against the Braves, I will kill someone.

If I had to guess, it would be Lohse, who has been the best pitcher this year for us.

8-2 on the road with a 3.41 era

Hopefully the Rangers can win one of the next 2 and then have Yu and Matt Harrison pitch games one and two of the ALDS with Holland pitching game 3. If we lose 2, then Holland will probably have to pitch the wildcard and then it gets dicey with our 4th starter because Dempster sucks...

We will throw Gonzalez and Tillman these last two games.  We are guaranteed a WC spot if nothing else.  That will leave some interesting match ups for Buck to make.   Hope that Johnson and Hammel are recovered enough to play in the playoffs.  Really need a rotation of Johnson, Hammel, Britton and Yen to stand a chance.

One weird thing that the O's did this year, they would pull a guy out of the pen and let him start if they thought the starter needed more rest and would bring guys up, let them throw a game or two and then send them back down.  It was interesting, but seemed to work enough to get them in the playoffs since 96.

Tim Hudson was scheduled to start Atlanta’s season finale, but with the Wild Card spot locked up the Braves will rest him for the playoffs and instead turn to Ben Sheets for Game 162 against the Pirates

I hate rooting against Huddy (assuming, of course, that the Cards can win one more, or the Dodgers can lose one more).

I tell you in the NL, I'd hate to play either the Braves or the Cards in a 5 game series.  Starting pitching for both teams have been outstanding down the stretch.

I was until I moved to Texas. I hung with the Cubs a couple of years, but it is hard to not be a fan of the Rangers living here. I go to a lot of games and have become a big fan of the team. I still like the Cubs though in the NL.

One game tiebreaker on Thursday.

To finish out the season, the Orioles get the Rays on the road and the Yankmees get the Fortune .500's at home.  I like the Yankmee's odds in this last game.

Cardinals v. Braves in historic first wild-card play-in game at 4:07 p.m. STL time from Turner Field

And ESPN reporting that Braves will throw Medlen, not Hudson.  Cards to pitch Lohse.

From Cardinals beat writer:

Quote
Early thoughts on the Cardinals vs. Braves:

1. True statement: MLB’s new postseason format gave the Cardinals an opportunity to make the playoffs, and they wouldn’t have qualified under the previous system, which featured only one wild-card pass. True statement: the addition of a second wild card left the door open to October, and the Cardinals walked in. But the Cardinals have absolutely nothing to apologize for.

Did they create the system? No, they did not. This is Bud Selig’s baby. Bill DeWitt doesn’t run the MLB. Did the Cardinals skirt the rules? No, they did not. The Cardinals competed under the guidelines put in place. Are the Cardinals some embarrassing, sorry, no-account team with a losing record? No, they are the defending World Series champions that are No. 2 in the NL in runs per game, and No. 3 in starting-pitching ERA. Despite being clobbered by injuries, they have a .540 winning percentage.

The Cardinals made it to Atlanta because they went 11-4 with their season on the line. I believe that all of the non-division winners were eligible to claim this second wild-card ticket. I don’t believe any team was banned. This isn’t like an NCAA thing, where a team is placed on probation and ruled ineligible to play in a bowl game, or the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Dodgers, Brewers, Diamondbacks, Pirates and Phillies each had a shot at this, but couldn’t catch the Cardinals.

So if you’re among the people whining about this, shaddup already. Direct your complaints to the commissioner’s office. I don’t think the Cardinals plan to decline the invitation to play the game in Atlanta on Friday.

2. I’m detecting at least some unhappiness with Mike Matheny’s decision to start Kyle Lohse instead of Adam Wainwright in the go-home or go-on game in Atlanta. As I have said before, I would never criticize a manager that wants to give the baseball to Wainwright or Chris Carpenter in a big game. But I’m puzzled by the griping over Lohse; you’d think that Matheny is giving the start to Brandon Dickson, or something.

Why is Lohse starting? Because he’s been the team’s finest and most consistent starter this season from beginning to end. Lohse is 16-3. He has the NL’s fifth-best ERA (2.86). He has given up three earned runs or fewer in 28 of 33 starts. A guy goes 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA and all of a sudden he’s Kip Wells? Really? Some – not all – Cardinals fans want it both ways. Complain about Lohse getting snubbed and overlooked in the Cy Young consideration by the "East Coast media." But then, when Lohse is given the start Friday, some of the best fans in baseball are carrying on as if Matheny has lost his mind.

I’m a Cy Young voter. I guess I should revise my plans and put Waino on the ballot instead of Lohse, eh?

Lohse made one start against the Braves this season, May 30 in Atlanta. It did not go well. Five innings, two homers, nine hits and five earned runs. Wainwright also made one start against the Braves. It was early (May 12) before Waino refined his mechanics. But in 4.1 innings the Braves got him for five earned runs.

Waino is better now than he was then. But Wainwright isn’t the Wainwright of 2009 and 2010, when he had a 2.53 ERA over the two seasons. Wainwright will be that guy, and soon. But his ERA is 3.94, and he’s still calibrating his arm after missing 2011 in rehabbing from Tommy John elbow-transplant surgery. If the Cardinals survive the sudden-death game, Wainwright will be ready to go right away in the NLDS.

One more thing: in this situation Matheny isn’t going to allow any starting pitcher to let this game get away early. The manager will be aggressive in turning to his bullpen if he needs to.

3. The Braves are very good. They have a 93-68 record going into Game No. 162, and that’s outstanding. But there’s at least one issue. The Braves have struggled offensively this season.

Just a few simple numbers:

• The Braves average 4.32 runs per game, 7th in the NL this season. They’re 7th in onbase percentage (.320), 10th in slugging (.390), 9th in OPS (.709). They are 9th in homers per game (0.93), 13th in strikeout rate, and are last in the league with a .231 batting average with runners in scoring position.

• Since the All-Star break the Braves are scoring 4.01 runs per game, ranking 12th among the 16 NL teams. Their second-half OBP (.315) is 10th, and their second-half slugging percentage (.369) is 14th. They’re batting .224 with runners in scoring position in the second half.

• The Braves have scored three runs or fewer in 71 games. That’s 44 percent of the 161 games they’ve played so far. As you know, the Cardinals have also had too many games of three runs or fewer, 66, but ATL has more.

• The Braves have lost 23 games this season when they’ve received a quality start from a pitcher.

4. Here are the Braves’ best hitters since the All-Star break:

Jason Heyward has 13 homers, 41 RBIs and a .459 slugging pct.

Freddie Freeman has 12 homers, 45 RBIs and a .467 slug.

Chipper Jones has 8 homers, 29 RBIs and is slugging .432.

Martin Prado is batting .281 with a .334 OBP, .418 slug, 19 doubles, 5 homers and 32 RBIs.

5. Here are Atlanta’s coldest bats since the All-Star break:

Brian McCann, bothered by a shoulder injury, is batting .210 with a .291 OBP and .348 slug.

Leadoff hitter Michael Bourn is batting .226 with a .324 OBP and 81 Ks in 266 at-bats.

Dan Uggla, benched for a time, is batting .217 with 67 Ks in 226 at-bats.

6. What the Braves do better than just about any team is prevent runs. Rotation issues caused problems early on, but since the All-Star break opponents are scoring only 3.2 runs per game against Atlanta. That’s the fewest runs per game allowed by any NL team. In terms of ERA, the Braves (3.44) rank 4th in the league for the season. Their starting-pitching ERA is 6th. The Braves second-half rotation ERA of 3.38 is No. 1 in the NL.

7. In a one-game playoff the Cardinals don’t have to deal with the Atlanta rotation. They have to deal with Kris Medlen. And he’s the most dominant starter in the majors since being elevated to the rotation on July 31. In 12 starts, Medlen is 9-0 with an 0.97 ERA. In 83.2 IP, Medlen has struck out 84 while walking only 10. That’s ridiculous.

Medlen hasn’t allowed a run in six of his starts, has given up one run in four of his starts, has been nicked for two runs in one start, and was pounded (I’m being sarcastic) for three runs in one start.

Of course, we are aware of the unusual streak put together by Medlen and the Braves. Since May 29 of 2010, Atlanta is a clean 23-0 in games started by Medlen. (There is a gap because of an elbow injury and subsequent Tommy John surgery.) In the 23-game win streak, Medlen is 14-0 with a 2.38 ERA.

Hey, Medlen is overdue for a bad start, right?

RIGHT?

8. Let’s talk about that excellent Atlanta bullpen. The Braves are No. 2 in the NL with a 2.89 relievers’ ERA, and rank first in allowing the fewest base runners per nine innings. The ATL relievers also have the fifth-highest strikeout rate, and are No. 1 in strikeout-walk ratio (3.08). The bullpen is fifth best in the league at preventing home runs.

9. Braves closer Craig Kimbrel is a bad man -- as in bad to the bone … as in, he’ll strike you out and maybe even cause anxiety, dizziness, heart palpitations, a drop in confidence and hair loss.

Here are Kimbrel's crazy numbers:

A 1.02 ERA, with 42 saves in 45 opps.

A batting-average allowed of .123, best by an MLB reliever.

A strikeout rate of 16.49 Ks per nine innings; that’s better than Aroldis Chapman (15.32 K rate.)

Hitters have a .185 OBP and .171 SLG against Kimbrel.

On May 4, Kimbrel had a 3.27 ERA. He was, well, human. And then he started growing fangs, and smoke began billowing from his ears, and when he throws the fastball, the sparks blind the hitters.

In 51 appearances since May 8, Kimbrel has allowed 3 earned runs in 50.2 innings; that’s an 0.53 ERA. He’s blown two saves since early May; July 20 vs. Washington and Aug. 31 against Philadelphia. So we think he’s human … sort of.

10. Lohse vs. the Braves: I’ll just give you the names and stats of the guys who have given Lohse the most trouble since he became a Cardinal in 2008.

Prado is 6 for 14 with 3 RBIs … Heyward is 2 for 7 with two doubles, two walks and a .571 slug …Chipper Jones is 3 for 7 with a double, homer, four RBIs and four walks … Freeman is 2 for 3 with a double, homer and two RBIs … Jose Costanza is 2 for 2. That’s about it.

However, over the last two seasons Lohse has been a much better pitcher than he was during the injury-plagued 2009 and 2010. Over the last two seasons, Braves hitters have mixed results vs. Lohse. But the Braves that did the most damage against him in 2010 and 2011 were Bourn (3 for 10), Freeman (2 for 3, homer, double), McCann (1 for 3, homer), Prado (2 for 3), Constanza (2-2). Small samples.

The current Cardinals have little experience in facing Medlen. The two players that have had some success, Rafael Furcal and Matt Adams, are injured and non-factors Friday.

Medlen will pound the sinker and get ahead in the count. Then he messes hitters up with an excellent changeup and curve.

I’ll be heading to Atlanta as part of Team Post-Dispatch, so you can expect many words from the baseball writers and the idiot columnist over the next three days.

Thanks for reading …

Well shit.  Thanks a lot Rangers, thanks a fucking lot!  I would have much rather played the A's in the wildcard playoff game consider we have played them pretty even this season and the Rangers have owned us.  Take your pick Friday, does Hamilton have a 4 run homer kind of game or does Beltre rape us again?

Hey, at least we didn't finish our predicted last and was really in the hunt until we got the Rays.

All it takes is getting hot at the right moment.

2004 Cardinals were clearly the best team in baseball...  and the Red Sox whipped them.

2006 Cardinals had no business going to the playoffs...  and won the whole fucking thing.

Check this shit out:

Quote
The only current Astro earning over $1M is Lowrie ($1.15M) who is on the DL. Next is Snyder at $750K. No one else makes over $600K.

Quote
Twenty-eight million. That's the minimum dollar amount the Astros will have committed to paying for players on their active roster next season, including bonuses paid for declining club options. This does not include contracts for arbitration-level players such as Lowrie and Norris, but does include rookie-level contracts for each roster spot, plus guaranteed salary.

The Yankees paid A-Rod $30M just in 2012.

We suck, but at least we ain't paying out the ass for it. (**cough Angels cough**)

Meant to post this earlier about the game today.

Dammit to hell!  Darvish isn't getting his fastball across the plate for a strike.  Why are we not stepping up in the box to hit that juke shit before it breaks?  Bad bunt, but we at least advanced a runner into scoring position.  A little more finesse on that bunt and we have runners on first and second with one out.....

Give Darvish credit. He is threw one hell of a game.  Hopefully Holland won't kill us.

Questioning Saunders pitching as well.  But then again he is a work the corners pitcher anyways.  Still would like to have seen him be more aggressive.

Hells to the yeah!  Another run and a shitty throw by Holland but with Hamilton and Beltre, I will not be comfortable until it's over.

O'Day needs to come up huge here.  The only comfort I have and that makes me a little less nervous is having Buck as a manager.  He is a damn fine tactician, he knows his match ups and how to use his bull pen.

There's nothing quite like playoff baseball. Congrats!

And sorry to WE!!!  Rangers just got cold at the wrong time. Hope they resign Hamilton.

I went to the game last night and it sucked. I have been to at least one game per post season series over the last 2 years and the atmosphere last night sucked. I think the fans could feel what was about to happen. The guys just weren't playing with the same energy as they have for the past 2 years.

And I would be surprised if Hamilton signed with the Rangers next year. His time here has run its course. They probably talked about the boo's, but it was pretty bad after his last at bat. Even his first at bat, which was a shitty at bat, there were a couple of boo's. Man on first and third with no outs, the O's have someone warming up in the pen, the pitcher is struggling, and Hamilton swings at a first pitch ball...again. Of course he rolls into a double play and that was typical for the night.

That game sucked. It was one of the worst games I have been too and not just because we lost.

Is it bad that the Cardinals have more wins in October (3) than my 2 favorite football teams do combined, for the season? (Auburn 1, Saints 1)

O's win game two.  ARod the last Yankees out.  Haha!

I think they play on Wednesday night?

Cards tied it up today, too.  Game 3 on Wednesday at noon.

To a cards Oreos series.

Btw I thought it was pretty shitty how the bravos fans acted throwing shit on the cards. Very Philly fan esque.

I was going to bitch about the missed opportunities in game 1.  Runners on 1 and 3rd with one out, but we never advance the guy to second to eliminate the DP.  Or the leadoff double in the 7th and we never got him in (unacceptable in my book), the decision to bring in Johnson when Matusz had just toasted them in the previous inning........anywho......piss on it.  First time my team has been there since 97 and win or lose, I am enjoying the fact that I have a reason to watch some baseball after June.

I thought the call was bullshit, too, but not the reason the Braves lost the game.

If the Nats beat the Cards, I'll root for them to win the NL.

In the AL, I hope Oakland can beat Det, and Baltimore can beat NYY.  Baltimore over the A's, though.

What would they call a Baltimore/Nats series?

It was a bad call but the fans reaction was even worse. Excuses is all I heard. You tell some uga fans bleed into the braves fanbase. And it wasn't why they lost.

And it would be a beltway series I guess.

Congrats to the Cards for making it to the NLCS.  The Giants apparently caught fire at just the right time to take the series.  Another great season.  I'll say this, and I haven't seen any statistics, but the Cardinals have to be the most consistent team in all of baseball over the last 15-20 years.

Now...I'm fairly certain I won't watch 3 pitches of the World Serious.  Can't think of 2 teams I give less of a fuck about.

I think I read that since 2000, this was their 7th NLCS, with a record of 3-4.  And really, that's all I expect out of them, just keep my attention by playing meaningful baseball games into September.  I think with the extra Wildcard, you can pretty much pencil then in contention every year.

Giants pitching was outstanding the last 3 games.  To say the Cardinals choked does a disservice to how well the Giants pitched.  In game 5, the series turned in the 2nd inning, Cards had runners at 2nd and 3rd and no body out, and couldn't get a run home.  Had the feeling that if the damn would have broken there, Cards would have won, but they didn't.  Credit Zito.

And I will watch the World Series when Verlander is pitching, since he's dating Kate Upton, and I'm sure they will show her on TV.  And on that note, I hope Verlander fucking dies... lucky bastard.

You know...I didn't know that.  A legitimate reason to watch the Serious now.  Being a baseball fan, I'll probably catch a game or two.  I do love some October baseball....and I have no life this year when it comes to football.
