Title: Fall Practice
Post by: wesfau2 on August 03, 2016, 08:54:16 AM
Starts TODAY, motherfuckers!

Whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The offseason is finally, officially over.

Make a crazy prediction to celebrate.  I'll make 3:

1) The Auburn defense will be Top 5 in the SEC;
2) JF3 takes the starting job by the LSU game;
3) The Iron Bowl champ wins the SECW...wearing Burnt Orange and Navy Blue.

GET SOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alabama is changing their colors to orange and blue? So just what in the hell are we supposed to wear?

I have a lot of money invested in my wardrobe going back over 40 years. A lot more money than any of you can imagine. And I still wear a lot of these things.

I'm calling the SEC commissioner's office about this.

Crazy Prediction.

In the 3rd week of the season, airfares drop to an all-time record low.  A conflict arises for an Auburn fan in Texas and he can't make the game. So, he graciously offers his 2 tickets and room at the Courtyard Auburn to a neighbor who he knows to be an Auburn fan as well, free of charge. The Courtyard Auburn offers free Continental Breakfast and free shuttle service to and from the airport and JHS.

Dallas makes a game.

I'm hoping to make the AU-Corndog game as my shift schedule permits it as of today. At a $150/ticket in the north end zone, I'm expecting an AU TIGER win with a Miles post-game presser for the ages. The last AU-Corndog game I attended was 1994, and the last AU game I attended was Vandy in 2001.

http://auburn.247sports.com/Bolt/Martin-protects-ball-impresses-Malzahn-46674028

Quote
AUBURN, Ala. – Kam Martin got his first opportunity to show the Auburn coaching staff what he can do in a live setting during Tuesday's scrimmage. He still has progress to make, said Gus Malzahn, but Martin did show potential that could lead to him seeing playing time as a true freshman in 2016.

"He's a smart guy," Malzahn said. "He just needs more experience as far as the run game goes. He got a handful of carries."

The most important aspect of Martin's performance, though? He held onto the football.

"A freshman, that's what I'm always looking at, especially from a running back standpoint," Malzahn said. "If they're going to play early, can they protect the football? And he did that today. That's really what stood out to me."

A native of Port Arthur, Texas, Martin is undersized at 5-foot-10 and 177 pounds but has "a lot of speed," according to Auburn H-back Chandler Cox. Martin showed it on plenty of occasions in high school. The former Baylor commit rushed for 3,500 yards and 44 touchdowns during his career at Memorial High School.

"(Speed is) something we need at running back," Cox said. "We’re kind of a bigger group now, 230-plus guys. I think him — he’s going to help us out, because losing (former Auburn running back) Roc (Thomas), he was our speed guy kind of, and Kam Martin has all that speed. I think he has a lot of potential, a lot of big things for him to come in the future.”

http://auburn.247sports.com/Bolt/Who-won-the-Chandler-Cox-Deshaun-Davis-collision-46673307

Quote
AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn moved two of its H-backs to running back this spring in an effort to add a more physical element to the run game. Has it worked? Well enough, as Deshaun Davis can attest.

Davis, a sophomore linebacker, met up with H-back Chandler Cox during one of Cox’s carries in Tuesday’s scrimmage, the first of fall camp.

Davis wasn’t shy about admitting who got the better of the encounter.

“Chandler won that one,” Davis said after the scrimmage. “Chandler won. He got a better end of it. When I tackled him, he kind of went forward and I fell on the side of him. He got the better end of that one.”

Last week, Cox said he looks forward to opportunities like he received Tuesday.

“It’s super exciting. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Cox said. “When I came to Auburn, I wanted to run the ball. They’re giving me that chance, and I think it’s good for me too, because I want to help this team as much as I can.”

The 6-foot-1, 236-pound Cox has split time at H-back and running back in fall camp, while Kamryn Pettway is working exclusively at running back. Both bring the physicality Auburn was looking for in the spring, but that’s not all.

“When you see big guys like that, you don’t think that they have speed, but they can really get on the edge also and turn the corner,” Davis said. “It’s like a two-headed monster.”

And of course,

http://auburn.247sports.com/Article/Where-Auburns-quarterbacks-stand-after-1st-preseason-scrimmage-46672616

Quote
AUBURN, Ala. — Gus Malzahn is still working through his thought process at quarterback.

It’s possible he could name a starter this week, and he’s not sure if he will need a scrimmage Saturday to make the final decision.

“Well, I don't know about that,” Malzahn said Tuesday, the Tigers’ first scrimmage inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. “But we will have another scrimmage, and it'll be this weekend. It'll be pretty quick. I'm not ready to say that right now. Like I said, I wasn't just looking at the quarterbacks. I was looking at everybody. This will be a good evaluation.”

Auburn coaches will conduct a second practice later today to correct mistakes from the scrimmage. Tuesday marks the first two-a-day practices of preseason camp, the sixth day of training.

Jeremy Johnson, Sean White and John Franklin III scored touchdowns but Franklin III had a turnover, according to a source. Johnson threw a beautiful long pass to Eli Stove to the 3-yard line and the quarterback scored a touchdown on a run on the next play. White appears to be the favorite heading into the final scrimmage, according to a source.

Only freshman Woody Barrett was allowed to be tackled during the scrimmage and the three contenders for the starting job were off limits from defenders.

Plans could change for the potential starters Saturday.

“We’d like to not have to [tackle the potential starters]” Malzahn said. “It is a possibility. But each time, we're putting them into some pressure situations and competitive situations. We're hoping we can make that call without having to do that.”

Several teammates believe the upcoming decision from Malzahn will be difficult to make after the scrimmage Tuesday.

“I mean, if everybody’s going to score I’m pretty sure it’ll be difficult,” said Stevens, who caught one pass in the scrimmage.

“You see them make certain plays, and you’re like, ‘Wow!,’” offensive lineman Braden Smith said. “They’re all really great quarterbacks, and at the end of the day, it’s going to be a battle till the end, I feel like.”

The first-team unit played 37 snaps, the second-team unit played 29 plays and the third-team unit worked 42 plays. Barrett played more than the other three quarterbacks. Devin Adams also threw a pass caught with one hand by Stove along the left sideline.

The three quarterbacks mixed it up with starters and backups.

“As far as the quarterbacks, in this league, things are going to break down because of the defenses,” Malzahn said. “You've got to protect the football. You need to make a play when things break down. We're watching all those things from above while all three are getting equal reps with the ones and twos. I want to see how they react with both groups. I want to see how the players in the groups react to them as far as their leadership, as far as their energy and their belief. So we're evaluating that right now.”

Are they still practicing?  How long before Gus names a starting QB?  After the next scrimmage?  Is Wiregrass really gay?
You have asked some really dumb things before but this ranks up there really high.

We are done with scrimmages before Clemson.

Obviously the game counts and I don't intend to take them lightly. But why else do you think that we will be starting what would likely be a 3rd string QB on any other SEC team?

I think Gus wants to keep it close and get us ready for tighter battles in the rest of the season.

It's just a preseason game anyway.

A little tidbit of possible insider e-penis info from Bleacher Report.  May mean nothing but at this point, I honestly don't care which one they name.  I just want someone tabbed as the starter so they can get as many reps with the ones over the next 2 1/2 weeks as possible.

Auburn’s three-man preseason quarterback battle hasn’t offered coach Gus Malzahn an obvious answer yet, but the Tigers could gain a little more clarity this week.

That’s according to Brandon Marcello of AuburnUndercover, who reports that Auburn will name a starter this week, and that redshirt sophomore Sean White is “the man to beat” as of now.

As last season showed us, however, Malzahn naming a Week 1 starter certainly doesn’t guarantee anyone will remain in that role. So even if White truly is No. 1 on the current depth chart, Jeremy Johnson and John Franklin III should have their fair chances to unseat him.

White threw for 1,166 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in five starts (seven appearances) last season.

Some had thought Franklin III would be able to take a hold of the starting job during fall camp, so it should be interesting to see where he ultimately falls in Auburn’s pecking order. According to Marcello, the dual-threat junior college transfer should still be “a consistent threat” in Wildcat packages if not named starter.

Watched the first 5 minutes of Malzahn's press conference from today's practice.  I've long since given up getting too excited or pissed off about the overall picture.  I just try to stay excited that foosballz is here and whatever happens, happens.  But Gus has said time and time again, leading into Fall Camp, that he wanted to name a starting QB early on go with that guy.  Today was the same damn rhetoric coach speak shit we've heard forever.

"We're not ready to name a starter at quarterback just yet.  There's no hurry.  There's great competition between all 3....blah...fucking coach speak...BLAH!!!"

There's no hurry????  Are you serious???  One of the favorites to win the MNC this year is 2 weeks away and there's no hurry??? It's great competition going on???

Here's a piece of advice from the ultimate armchair QB who doesn't even pretend to know shit about your job.  2 WEEKS TIL KICKOFF!  NAME THE STARTER AND LET HIM GET THE REPS.

This is no longer a matter of we, as the fans, want to know.  This is football 101. Pick your guy and get him ready for Clemson!

We are keeping Clempson guessing.  We have simplified the playbook.  We have vanilla. We are going to get back to basics.

I have a heavy sense of foreboding about this game and this entire season.  I'm really afraid that we are going to look like squirrels fucking a coconut on offense, Gus and Lash will pinwheel around looking confused and unable to fix what's broken, we'll damage egos and hamstring ability by "competition" and it will be a clusterfuck of monumental proportions.

I'm tired of the "defense is really flying around and going to be good..." bullshit too.

I'm just tired.  I don't know if it's bama fatigue or if I am just less inclined to care, but I feel less and less as time goes on.

There was a time in my life when by this point in the year I'd read every magazine, had a schedule on the wall with times and dates committed to memory, I knew the jersey number of the starting 22 and most of the two deep so I would know who was on the field and what we were doing. And by now I was redecorating the house in orange and blue.  No more.  I haven't even picked up a single magazine.   I have no idea when our first game is.  I thought it was this Saturday, honestly.  I have no idea what time we play.  And it doesn't bother me.

This describes me to a T.  Or is it a Tee?  Tea?  Whatever.

I don't recall ever being less excited going into a football season.  Maybe it's because I've moved to Georgia and therefore not inundated with all things crimpsun so my hatred has tempered.  Maybe I'm too busy chasing 3 rugrats around to have time to do much else.  I don't know what it is, but I do know I'm already at the mid-season mehs and we haven't even kicked off the first game.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it's subconsciously I know we are going to get slaughtered by the Fightin' Dabbos and I've decided not to set myself up to be pissadointed.  Even though I still will be.

Same.

And those of you projecting the B'ham bowl, I think that's setting the bar a little high. I think it's gonna take more than a few upsets to be bowl eligible.

I seriously am not sure we can beat Arkansas State, much less any SEC team on our schedule. Vandy's the only one I'd put us over 50% on and that's if we take them seriously.

Are y'all aware that Arkansas State has former Oklahoma quarterback Justice Hansen, former Alabama defensive lineman Dee Liner, former all-star TCU return man Cameron Echols-Luper (Curtis's boy), and many other top-level transfer talent?

I'm predicting pain, but it's gonna be ours.

If we had a QB on the roster who could stand out among last year's fuckup, Last Chance U's backup QB who played behind the redneck kid that didn't end up getting a scholly anywhere, and the white boy who's not doing very much to impress...OR...either the first or second string RBs going into the spring (Jovon or Roc)...I might feel otherwise.

Look I get your stance.

However what everyone is overlooking is that we are in a new year.  With new teams.

Honestly, (and I'm not saying they are gonna suck because that backfires on me every year) if you look at all of the SEC teams including bama they have same amount if not more question marks than we do.  QB issues...check, RB depth...check, OL loss of players...not for us.

Arkansas- new QB,
LSU- still one sided offense, Forunette tweaked his ankle don't tell me he isn't looking to the pros.
Ole Miss- Solid team pretty much intact from last year, off field issues though
Miss State- No Dak I say they return to bottom
aTm- QB issues, team issues

UGA - new coach...new qb
Vandy- still vandy

Look I have been an Auburn fan a long time. I get it! We cocoon ourselves as to not be disappointed.  Most of us don't want to get excited, because excitement leads to heartbreak when it comes to our team.

I get those that think 8 wins is doable, I don't get the total destruction theory though.  We were 6-6 last year with pretty much the same schedule save for Clemson (which is obviously an upgrade). Even if our offense has not improved from last year (which I think it will), I know just the pure addition of Carl Lawson makes our defense better than last year, including better LB play.  Based on that you have to be at the minimum a 6 win season...with a potential to increase from there.

Puff puff pass, homie

Nothing to puff puff pass about, last time I check ain't no one played a game yet.

JHS stadium at night, first game of the season. Lots of pressure and hype for DeShaun Watson to be better than last year.

Better teams have come and lost in our house.

We were 6-6 last year with pretty much the same schedule save for Clemson (which is obviously an upgrade).
This is the problem. Swap Louisville for #2 Clemson, and what do you get? 5-6. No bowl.

With what happened to our #1 & #2 RBs, we are left with shit for a running game. Add to that that we apparently have shit for a passing game, and we're gonna have shit for an offense. Also we're losing Ricardo Louis, Melvin Ray, Duke Williams, and Jonathan Wallace at receiver. Not good.

I think Clemson will assrape us and it will fuck with our team's heads. I think Arkansas State is way better than we'll likely prepare for and we could drop that as well. I just have seen this team fall apart after any kind of adversity like that. I don't want this to be the case, but I just think it's the most likely.

Why would you think we have shit for a running game.  Again yes losing Jovon hurts, however it's not like we haven't recruited and don't have able studs in the backfield.  We have top rated guys back there, talented guys.  No one knew Peyton Barber was going to be the man last year, we all thought it was going to Roc or Jovon.  Someone will step up in this role.  Out of all the things that could possibly happen this year this is actually one that doesn't bother me all that much.

Shit for a passing game based on what?  We had shit for a passing game last year and still managed to win 7.  I think you will be highly surprised by this.

Out of all of those WR you mentioned I will give you Ricardo "Drops easy ones, makes the hard ones" Louis. The rest got a hearty guffaw as in I can't believe you listed those guys as key players especially Duke.   Again based on the studs we have recruited, including talented guys that we have, what makes you think we are going to be worse at this position than last year?

It was the Jonathan Wallace mention that caused a ROTFLMAO moment for me.  As for the WR group, this will definitely sound like I just chugged a gallon of the orange & blue koolade, but I really think one of these true freshman recruits is going to step in and do some eye-popping shit. One of the top rated classes in the nation and they're 6'2" plus and athletic.

I'm conceding nertin' to nobody. If we get some folks after Deshaun Watson's ass, we can beat Clemson. Yeah, that's a tall order but screw it.  Put a spy on him and jack him up every available opportunity.

Look, the guy is a bad ass.  Go look at his 2015 numbers and it's not a pretty sight.  Almost make you go, "Okay...so who do we play in week 2?". But, despite his superior badassedness, I'm tired of people blowing Clemson up to be the damn Carolina Panthers.  Know why they do it?  Because they played the mighty Tahd that close.  We held Bama to 16 less points than they did.  Last year, Clemson ran the table into the MNC game, but along the way the margins of victory weren't exactly eye opening.

Louisville 3
Notre Dame 2
Syracuse 10
USCe 5
North Carolina 10
Hell, they got in a track meet with NC State 56-41.

Two keys.  Our QB runs the offense efficiently.  Our D makes Watson pay for every yard he gets.

Truth! Last year's team had some scrap in them and never gave up.

That 2012 bunch made me sick to my stomach. I have never seen an Auburn football team quit the way they did. During the aTm skull fucking that year, they were fucking off on the sideline not give a single damn about the game. Clemson ran off wins like we did in 2010. This season I think I read where they returned 4 defensive starters, now down to three after a recent injury.

I think we have a better chance testing their depth on defense in a slobberknocker rather than get in a track meet with their offense. I'm just not so confident in our ability to lop off big gains consistently enough given the questions we have at the skill positions. It might not be preventable but we don't need to force having to play catch-up from trying to get too cute with the wildcat, ill-timed deep balls or other such momentum killers.

We think we have a stout defense and likely solid special teams including Legatron so why not lean on them until we figure some things out on offense.

The Auburn football coaching staff is better in 2016 than in 2015, when coaches didn't like each other, according to former Tigers coach Pat Dye.

The former Auburn coach told ESPN 106.7 in Auburn that "every change (Gus Malzahn) made on the staff has been a positive" and that there were disharmony last year.

"Every change, without exception," Dye said. "I don't care whether it's – what it is, it's been a positive.

"The coaches like each other and that wasn't the case last year. When the coaches don't like each other the players are confused and who are you going to listen to? Who's got the influence?"

Baylor transfer-prospect QB Jarrett Stidham was watching practice in Auburn today.

He seems to be committed now. At least his Twitter account indicates it.

There are Auburn and Gaytor fans all commenting on that tweet.  Not sure what any of the twatting means though.

I have read a few articles that seem to think Stidham is 80% at this point, maybe even more. It helps that Kam Martin is at Auburn already and oddly enough, the QB situation at Auburn is helping a lot. From watching previous video and highlights, there is no one on our roster that can even sniff dudes jock strap.
