Don't look for a lopsided win tonight.  Morehead was 23-8 last season and made the tourney.  Auburn slopped around in their exhibition game against a Division II opponent, going down 9-0 before waking up.

We have a butt load of new faces who haven't played together and may take a little time to gel.

USI isn't a slouch of a D2 school, they were picked to win the GLVC, one of the top D2 basketball conferences.  They've got 5 guys who played D1 last season.

Their head coach, an alum of USI, was the D2 player of the year when Bruce was coach, in the year they won the national championship.  I love that Pearl gets places like USI some love by scheduling these games with them.

But like Buzzy said, they ain't no Barry.

So...size all over the court.  Nice.

Aggressive defense from all positions.  Nicer.

Trio of guards with shot-creating ability.  Nicer still.

I'm amazed at how Bruce can get his teams to commit to defense, but he fucking manages that.  Lots of full-court press last night that paid dividends over and over.

I'm a little concerned about Kessler spending so much time out in 3-land cranking shots when he should live under the basket, but I guess he earns those shots with so much defense under the rim.

Almost had a heart attack when Smith went to the floor.

Future is bright, kids.  Gonna be a fun year.

I couldn't pick it up, so I have no idea how they looked. (Edit....just saw where Wes covered that)  Sounds like they stayed in control from the start.  It was nice to have a game on just about every channel, so I could flip around and check a lot of teams out.

Tennessee looked good and rained 3's at a record pace.  Foggy Shit For Brains, Justin Powell, was right in the middle of it.

Kansas looked like their usual athletic self in a fairly easy win against Michigan State.

Duke and Kentucky beat on each other all night.  UK has a beast under the boards.  Wide body bro who transferred from West Virginia and had about 8 rebounds in the first 10 minutes.

Heard Jay Bilas say UCLA is the best team in America.  Horse hockey.  They just got on a Cinderella run to the Final 4 last season.  Gonzaga has their usual 28-3 regular season team that will get that shit packed at some point in the tourney.

Memphis officially has the worst looking court in all of basketball.  Even Scott Van Pelt was making fun of it.  Pure ass!

Surprisingly Hulu had the ESPN+ games (I think it came with a Disney+ subscription).  The quality of the broadcast was pooooooooooooooooooor, though.   Bad lag/buffer, horrible commercial/half breaks.  Just ass.

Good first game, lots to build on.  Little concerned that from the 4min mark of the first half, Morehead went on a 30-15 run, and judging by how loud Bruce was during a timeout, he was a little concerned, too.

Thought we gave up too many offensive rebounds - was a little shocked that Kessler didn't box out better - but I think all of that is fixable, and have complete faith in Bruce to fix it.

After a lackluster performance against the South Florida Bulls, the 3-0 Tigers take the show on the road to face Connecticut.  The Huskies are ranked #22 at 4-0.  Their closest win has been by 24 points, but they've played who's who of nobody's from Binghamton to Coppin State.  Still, they've taken care of business like a good team should.

Time to see if Bruce's boys have the chutzpah to come out with a win against the Pups.

So, 1-1 in Atlantis with a 3rd game today at 3:30.

This team obviously needs time to gel, as they are making tons of unforced errors and just generally are not in sync.

That said, each individual piece is very exciting.  The guards are tenacious defenders and WG and KD are fearless shooters.  WG loves that Jared Harper 26 foot 3-ball.  Can't wait til Allen Flanigan gets to join this group.

How about this lineup at forward: Jabari Smith (6'10"/220), Jaylin Williams (6'8"/230), Chris Moore (6'6"/240)...and then THIS guy runs with them when he's not swatting shots under the rim: Walker Kessler (7'2"/245).

And camped out low: the aforementioned Walker, along with Stretch (6'10"/245) and Dylan Cardwell (6'11"/250).

All that size out there makes me moist.

We took UConn to double OT and lost, then rebounded with a relatively easy win over Loyola-Chi.  Syracuse will be another legit test today and another chance for these guys to build chemistry.

This team will make a LOT of noise in the conference this year, so get on board early.

Oh, also Bama lost to Rick Pitino's Iona squad (ranked 140 by KenPom).  So, HAHA.

UCF comes in tomorrow night.  This team is pretty damn good.  4-1 with a win over Miami, and the only loss being a 3 point win for Oklahoma.  Better bring that A game.

The last 5 out of 6 are at home before starting the SEC slate against LSU.  Hope Flanigan is back and ready to contribute by then.

Quotes from Sir Bruce on tonight's game with UCF

"This will be the second-best team we've played against behind probably UConn, and it's the best defensive team we've played against so far," Pearl said. "They're one of the oldest teams in college basketball – a lot of juniors and seniors, a lot of fourth- and fifth-year guys. Last year we didn't play Darius Perry, who is arguably their best player.
"This is a much better team than we played a year ago. We'll have to continue to improve."

Well, that was a total dismantling/pantsing of a B1G opponent.  I don't know much about Nebraska as a bball program, but Hoiberg is highly regarded as a coach.

With Bruce serving the first of a two-game suspension, Wes Flanigan stepped in and led the guys to an entertaining win in fertile recruiting grounds.  I'm amazed at the pace at which these guys are gelling.  Yesterday they looked completely in-sync, loose and dangerous.

Two questions (one of which is serious):
1. How do you work AF into this rotation without upsetting some chemistry?
2. Has Bruce been holding us back?

Slowly work him in until he is 100% and has knocked off all the rust.  If the rust sticks on him then you work him off the bench.

That's probably the ticket.  I was thinking moreso about ego/PT/chemistry.

Luckily, this team seems to lack the first element of that equation.

The Tiggers face off with North Alabama tonight at 8:00 CT.  That's 4:37 p.m. Pacific Time.

The Lions are 6-3 and riding a 5 game winning streak.  They got slapped around by 26 in their opener against Mississippi State, and also lost to Iona (Who gave Bama their lone loss) and Manhattan.  Since then, they've registered wins against a who's who of who the fuck is that?

No real stars on N.A. with their leading scorer hitting 11.7 ppg.  For Auburn, Jabari Smith is putting up some damn impressive numbers all around.

17.3 ppg

6.9 rebounds per game

2.6 assists per game

Shooting 85% from the charity stripe

44.7% from 3-point range

I don't have any idea how good this team is, or what will happen down the road when they get into conference play.  But right now, they look as good as any team in the country.  What would really bring about some chronic chub, would be to go all Braves on em'.  Winning the World Series was a huge fuck you to Major League Baseball.  Bruce Pearl winning it all would tell the NCAA to kiss his entire ass.

Its nice to be able to sleep walk through a half, shoot 30s-something percent for the game, without a key player (Jaylin), without our great Lord Bruce almighty, against a shit team we don't care about, with the students done for the year - and still be able to win by almost 30.

Its nice to be able to sleep walk through a half, shoot 30s-something percent for the game, without a key player (Jaylin), without our great Lord Bruce almighty, against a shit team we don't care about, with the students done for the year - and still be able to win by almost 30.

If this is what our bad games will look like? Im ok with it.

They did look a bit disinterested.
If we could talk the tall white guy into pounding as many buckets home with a dunk as possible, I think he might turn into one of the greats.
Cambridge started to have al little fun at the end. If he had hit all of those dunks, I think the roof would have caved in!

Still has me concerned about the dry spells though.

Good test on the road Saturday against St. Louis.  The Stork Looking Birds are 8-3 and coming off a win over Boston College.  I have it on good authority that AUJarhead will be in attendance.  Okay, good authority means he told me he was going.

Man, I can't wait for this game.

SLU is a good mid-major team, and will be a good test.

They've got the total package.  Size, length, shooting, great guard play etc.  Tough match up for anybody in the country.  They're also out of control and sloppy at times when you're thinking, just slow down a little.  Every rebound doesn't have to result in a fast break slam or 3-pointer at the other end.

But that's always been a trait of Lord Bruce's teams.  Not a lot of structure, and players are free to create and do day thang.  Fortunately, there's a lot of talent out there doin' day thang.

some of the ball movement they used to feed Jabari basket opportunities on the perimeter was a thing of beauty.

Snags, were talking basketball. Not the movement of balls from sack to purse. Just wanted to clarify.

He looked tentative at times out there.  I don't think he plays that many minutes if Cambridge isn't out, but it was really good to see him out there and somewhat close to the old Flannigan.

Next up is a trip to Columbia, Sakerlina.  The Cocks are 9-3 with a couple of, what I assume are quality wins, over FSU and Georgetown.  Have no idea what those teams are like this year.  They also got blown out by Coastal Carolina and handled easily by Clemson.

Here's to beating the cocks.

Frank Martin coached teams are very hard to beat at home and are very physical. Impressive win even with the really bad 5 min stretch between 9 and 4 mins left to play in the game where we kid of went full tard. This team has to learn how to play with a huge lead.

To be fair, the refs allowed usce to hack the hell out of us. Only when they held us down and went through our pockets did the fouls get called.
Impressively, we got physical also and did not lose our cool.

This team is kind of hard to watch. You can’t focus on your favorite player because it’s a free for all,out there. The talent Bruce has in that arena is phenomenal.
But can a ten man team stay gelled long enough to go all the way?
I’m not sure, but I’ll watch.

While the first point was indeed true, we also played super sloppy with ball handling, especially in the post. I said this on an earlier post too in Dec - but if this is a bad game (Jabari was off, KD was off, Flanny not playing), on the road, against a Martin team? I'll take it all day. Solid Quad 2 win. We had almost everything going against us last night and still cruised. Never thought I would see this. I don't know of a better front court in CBB right now. And the back court is coming around with WG/ZJ/KD.

Flannigan was out, Smith went to the bench early with a couple fouls and I think only had 5 points for the game.  Yet this group still won by 15 at cackalacky...that's reason to be giddy.

Smith still got his 10 points. They came late. usce made it a point to cover him up. That allowed others to get shots.
This team has many weapons.
Now that Kessler seems to be getting more aggressive, this will be a hard team to stop.

He can be a bull in a china shop for sure. But when he's playing like he knows his role, hes an asset. Same with Jaylin. Im not sure Jaylin even realizes how good he COULD be.

Moore is an example of 3 steps fwd, 2 steps back....hes a net asset off the bench but the negatives can be frustrating. Ive literally seen him steal the ball, come up with it, handle it sloppy, get it stolen from him, just to reach back in and steal it again, all in a matter of 12 seconds.

That stuff is just what you get with a Lord Pearl coached team. Freedom to be the bull in a china shop.  Pull that shit with most great coaches, and you're pulled and sitting on the bench with a coach in your face telling you to get it under control.  With Lord Pearl, he's screaming at you for not taking that 30 footer when you were clearly not open.

I have no complaints.

As I heard a rival fan say… “close your eyes and imagine how good you think the Auburn basketball team is.  Now open your eyes and double that.  Then realize you still aren’t there in terms of the reality.  That’s how good this team can be.”

It’s amazing. And disgraceful that we haven’t rained money and hookers on Bruce Pearl’s head.

If I did have a little minor complaint though?  It would be the tendency to slack off with a lead, and then press when the opposition cuts into it.

Sequence against UF with a couple of bad turnovers, including one on an inbounds comes to mind.  Made some really sloppily frantic turn overs. Had several chances to run them out of the building.  Got in our own way.  Seen that quite a few times.  Terrible turnover  right after getting a turnover that could break it open.

But that’s nitpicking.  How many times in your life have you had the ability to say “this team could go head to head with any in the country and have a good shot.”

Doesn’t mean I’m not worried about playing in Coleman Mausoleum.  They’re wounded after playing terribly on the road.

Oddly enough I had a Bama fan text me within seconds of going final to ask how much we had to pay the refs to fuck them over.

They never lose.

Running them out of the gym would h have been fun but there’s something just as satisfying as letting them have hope and then snatching it away.  Hurts them more.

Their fans are delusional. There would have been no comeback without the refs getting caught up in the emotion of the game and calling every slight tick on AU and then letting the turdsknock our guys down with no foul at all. I thought they killed Green at one point

Exactly.  There was one point they called a foul when somebody nearly decapitated Flanigan from behind.  I went into the kitchen to grab a drink, was gone for like less than 30 seconds and when I came back the turds were at the free throw line.  I was like ... fuck.... did he miss the shot and we foul on the rebound?  What did I miss?  So I rewound it to discover the ref had actually called the foul on Flanigan's back, apparently.

Guess he, Jaylin Williams and Kessler were just lucky they didn't get called for all those times their backs got in the way on rebounds.

Almost entire game without Kessler too. They were calling him for breathing too hard apparently. And well, hes now a target for the zebras going forward.

As an admin on a premium site I won't name eluded to last night well, underlined:

Center Walker Kessler was severely limited by foul trouble for the second consecutive game. Auburn people will fuss all day about the calls and whatnot, and some of them in Tuscaloosa were iffy at best, but the bottom line is that Kessler must find a way to stay in the game. Auburn's defense is at its best when perimeter guys can play more aggressively for deflections and steals knowing Kessler can clean up messes at the rim. When he's out, those perimeter guys must change their defensive paradigms — and it weakens the Tigers' defense significantly.

Were a very different team when Kessler is in the game.

But yall are correct. Bama was in the Double Bonus halfway through the second half. Thats pure nuts. But the above writeup is correct - Kessler has to find a way (in spite of the bad calls) to stay in games. Although Cardwell - defensively - did an ample job.

About the only thing he could have done last night was to escort them to the basket and lift them up so they could lay it in more easily.  And then get called for reaching.

We seriously need to enjoy this era. Its a golden era.

Bruce is 60+. He won't be around forever. And his regal heir the good Prince Steven just doesnt have the same tenacity, charisma and marketable persona that Lord Bruce does. Although Ive read he's an excellent scout and x's/o's coach as far as game planning.

It won't be like this 20 years from now most likely. Even now, we will lose some games. Thats the nature of 35-40 game round ball schedule with 18-21 year old student athletes. You can't be "on" every night. We may even lose to a few teams that are lesser than us.

But that aside, and for now......we really need to be enjoying this team, this coach and these good times. I never thought I'd see this in my lifetime. Not even half of what he has made us even. Bruce Pearl deserves to be the highest paid coach in CBB....PERIOD. The job he took was one of the worst in the country, and he turned it into what appears to be on the verge of a dynasty if he keeps this trajectory. Or at least a perennial powerhouse program at worst.

All hail Lord Bruce. Anything less than a damn statue and naming the court after the guy would be a travesty.

All hail Lord Bruce. Anything less than a damn statue and naming the court after the guy would be a travesty.

Guess he, Jaylin Williams and Kessler were just lucky they didn't get called for all those times their backs got in the way on rebounds.
When they finally did call over the back on #2, he acted like it was a travesty. Hell that was the fourth time he had done it in the last 5 minutes. We got away with a few, but not nearly enough to even out.

Thinking today about where we are versus where we were.

Tony Barbee was in Auburn four years.  Only once a team he coached win more games in a season than Auburn's already won so far this year.

Jeff Lebo was in Auburn six years.  Only twice did his teams win more than 14 games in a season.

Barbee's Auburn teams won a total of 49 games. Lebo's Auburn teams won a total of 96 games.  Combined, that's 145.  Average 14.5 per year.  Between the two of them, a total of four seasons with more than 14 wins, only one season with more than 20.

That's a whole decade of suck.

In seven years, Pearl's teams won 139 games.  Only two seasons out of eight (including this one) where his teams won less than 14 games.  Six seasons over 14.

AU has been ranked in the final AP poll eight times in history (since 19-fucking-05). Of those eight, three were under Pearl.  *There is a travesty there, finishing 14th in the season AU made the Final Fucking Four.*

Cliff Ellis and Sonny Smith (considered AU's two best coaches of the modern era) had a combined total of five 20-win seasons over the course of 21 years.  Pearl already has three and an almost certain fourth this season.

GF is right.  What we're seeing now is unprecedented.  AU should give Bruce Pearl anything and everything he wants.  Forever.  If at some point in the near future we aren't playing in The Pearl with his statue out front and a 90-foot tall painting of him with a halo around his head hanging from the rafters.... well.... we deserve what we get.

I don't think so.  Did you see Newell's reasoning for ranking AU 9th?

Well, ummm... best resume in basketball without a doubt.  But if maybe they played a bunch of teams on a neutral floor they might lose to some of them.  So I'm not changing that.

He moved us DOWN a spot (to behind Kansas) after two wins last week.  If he'd left us where we were the week before AU would be #1.

I have zero confidence he'd move us up.  If anything he might move us down again.

None of this matters, though.  March is what matters.  It's surreal sitting here mid January not wondering if there might be enough miracles left on the schedule to maybe, possibly, hopefully get a tournament invite.  And by that I mean NIT.

The numbers will get harder for him to defend.

Last week we beat an unranked OM and #24 Bama.  This week we'll have unranked UGA and #12 UK.

Last week Gonzaga had unranked BYU and Santa Clara.  This week, unranked USanFran and Loyola.  In fact, not another ranked team on their schedule at this point.

Tonight is Fuck Georgia night.  On paper, it's probably the easiest game left on Auburn's schedule.  The Flea-Bitten Mutts look epically bad, with a 5-12 overall record.  They're 0-4 in the SEC and 0-3 on the road.  (0-2 at neutral sites)

It's a game you hope they come out with focus and cruise to a 20 point win, but the Dawgs are at least capable.  They do have win over Memphis and recently played a good A&M team to within 2 points.

Just take care of bidnezz, and start thinking about Kentucky tomorrow.

i saw the team get a little lax in the 2nd half. But they were up by 20+, so I think they started to try and have a little fun.
A few missed allyoops and a couple of other misses, but all in all, those shots only help the next ones.

KD had a good time and that was important for a former player to beat his old team. His enthusiasm fueled the other players.

fuga was pretty bad though. And AU's defense was smothering early on.

It will take ALL 40 minutes to beat UK.

That's the ONLY critique I have of this team so far...over the past few weeks to a month, it seems like they build a big lead and then tend to try for the sportscenter highlight plays until the other team climbs right back in the game.  If they played with the same intensity for 40 minutes, I couldn't imagine anyone beating this bunch unless injuries pile up.

My seat was perched over the auburn bench. Watching the good lord Bruce stalk the sidelines and raise hell was a thing of beauty. But the place is pure magical. Rockin from start to finish. Very few empty seats. Every damn person in the place is directly over the court. Noise has nowhere to go but to the court. Reminds me slightly of how the swamp was designed for crowd noise. And Cameron indoor in a round ball sense. I was just looking around in the middle of us kicking Tom creans ass thinking - Bruce did all this. From nothing. And it’s the most electric atmosphere in cbb now. Students were lined out to Donahue at 4 pm. We’re on the verge of being number 1.

Kaos said it best last week - make the man the highest paid coach in bb, name the court after him, build a statue. Anything less is a disservice to the guy. It’s simply amazing what he’s built.

Someone on the rivals board said it well this morning , “purpose driven approach”. That’s absolutely this team. They know when to hold em and when to fold em. Although I admit it’s aggravating at times.

Quote

It felt like the Tigers knew they were significantly better then UGA and were content to wait for fast-break opportunities and let those buckets be enough. It's not coasting per se because the team's defense remained opportunistic, but the purpose-driven approach that made Auburn so incredibly overpowering during the first half was fleeting.

Then again, being up 25 points at halftime means Auburn didn't need to summon its best effort from start to finish Wednesday.

Put this in your smipe and poke it.

Auburn won one of the biggest home basketball games in its history Saturday afternoon.  KD Johnson was a big part of that success, scoring 17 points and playing all but seven minutes of the game.

Where was he an hour after the game, when the stands had cleared?  Celebrating downtown?  Partying with the team and the fans?

Nope.  That motherfucker was back on the court, practicing his three-point stroke.  Launching bombs from all over the court. Getting his footwork and release down.

I can't love the kind of people Saint Bruce brings to this program any more.

Agreed.  We had some of the weirdest lineup combos in at various points just trying to break through their defense, but nothing was working.  The team just kept grinding...kept their cool...and calmly got that Dub.

I think this was a tremendous game in terms of character/team building and it will pay dividends down the stretch.  Road conference wins are rarely gimmes and this was no exception.  Nothing to do but hit the film room/gym and keep working.

^^^This^^^  All of it.  Took an L without actually taking an L.  Now Bruce knows the oopty oop play has been figured out in the conference too, so it's time to add some new offensive wrinkles.  Love, love, love me some KD!  He took the team on his back and finished that one.

worst offensive game in a few years.....until the end, we were in the mid/high 20's in FG %. Our star was 2-15 FG shooting.

3-4 years ago even, this kind of performance was a 20 point loss. Now, its a slim win. Yeah, ill take it. Mizzou is also schizo as hell. They scared me all week because they are hot n cold. They are the retard that storms into the room swinging axes or a kamikaze pilot, instead of the smooth criminal that stalks in disguise. The former can be more threatening. Their front court disrupted our front court. We will probably have another game like this - perhaps against MSU or Arky. It's ok....as Bruce eluded to post game, our players and team are allowed to have off nights. They aren't perfect.

No question they looked like the weight of number one was like an anchor tying them to the floor.  Up to this point, the team has looked day-by-day like it was having fun.  Last night it looked like it was trying to shit a ripe dragonfruit.

I guess when you see Arkansas beat that same team by 143 and read that you're favored by 18 if you just roll off the bus in your pajamas, it makes it hard to have much spark.  I am a little disappointed I guess that by, say, the 9:00 mark of the second half that the other gear this team has didn't kick in.  You hold a team without a basket for nearly nine minutes, you should build a 10-12 point lead.  Didn't happen.

I sense there was this wave building over the course of the season that led to Kentucky and once that mountain had been conquered and the ranking was in hand there was a whole lot of "we've arrived" and a huge dose of "well, what the fuck now?" going on.  Maybe even with the coaching staff. Bruce himself seemed off.  His post-game interview was very flat (for him).

I despise Mizzou, so fuck them anyways.  It's over, move on.

as soon as I think I've seen a classless coach or classless crowd in BB, I see another one that's worse. I have no issue with Cuonzo Martin personally. Hes a good coach and how Mizzou hasn't been better under him is bewildering. But the crowd was as classless as ive seen all year.

"Over....rated" after you LOSE?? Whatever. And that kind of shit is just water off the ducks back.

But "F&CK YOU, A-U" and "PUT HIM UNDER" (paraphrasing - but this is in re to putting an injured horse down on the track, directed at Wendell after his injury while on the court) ? Classless assholes.

The Scam Newton and Pearl Necklace signs were just pathetic.

Mama said there'd be days like these.
I think they ended up 30%..and still won.
Most nights a lot more of those shots hit. So if you can survive the off night, you can prevail.

I like that a different guy steps up almost nightly. Cambridge with the extra rebounds and KD with the twenty one pilots attitude.
It just works.
I saw an interview with Zep. It was a good interview. He knows who he is and his role. They all do. That is why they are successful. BP allows each of them to realize their potential within the team.

Sometimes it holds guys back a bit. I used to yell at Okeke to just take the damn ball to the hole. Nobody could stop him. But he played within the team. A good coach can keep superstars humble and allow them to grow better as team players.

And a walk-on scored the last three points to put a hundred on the turds.
The book faces are very quiet tonight. No complaints about the bad officiating.

I have a complaint!  They got called for 20 something fouls and that was only about half of what they actually committed.

Well to be fair, Chris Berman's jumper has really fallen off this year.  He's only shooting about 20% behind the arc.

This team has been resilient this year.  They found a way to pull that one out against FUGA, but that was a total team effort of being off.  Everybody, with the exception of Wendell Green in the first half, was off their game.  Kessler did some good things, but even Jabari looked disinterested.

I think a lot of people are pointing at this game as the one that gets us.  If we play even half as bad as we did against FUGA, it will be.  But if we get a little swagger back, and Jabari gets back on his game, I think we handle the Piggies.

Whatever it is, he better get back quick. Green is running out of juice and we can’t hit a FT!
No way Arky beats us if we have Zep and hit FTs.
But that’s how it goes sometimes. The SEC is full of strong teams that will take advantage of any deficiencies that pop up.

To be fair they made one basket from the floor over the last three-plus minutes and OT.  The only time I remember us at the line over that same span was Kessler’s two  misses.

Kessler's misses were particularly ugly.  Looks like he's got the FT yips.
As bad as it sounds, I think this will help them more than it will hurt.  They know they were short handed and they know they still should have won.  No streak or #1 ranking albatross hanging around their necks the rest of the way either.
Much rather the streak end there than in the round of 64 or 32.

I counted 5 in a row that Kessler missed. He had a monster night overall but bad from the stripe.

And yes we certainly miss Jasper.

Hogs are definitely a good team and it’s nuts that they aren’t ranked. And that’s a hell of a place to play on the road. But we are the better team in a neutral environment.

We just have to get used to being a basketball school and we will be fine. But if Pearl doesn’t straighten up quick, they need to run his ass off. Pronto.

What is wrong with them?

Gonzumbass lost to Bama badly and is still a #1 seed.

It always sucks to lose but it's basketball.  A loss in early February... a close loss to a quality team on the road... is a mosquito bite.

Do our stupid bandwagoners not remember 2018-19?

Fifteen-point loss to Ole Miss to start the SEC season
Three straight losses at the end of January
A 27-point ass raping at Kentucky in February
A "holy shit" one-point win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against a high school team

Yeah, it ended great.   But our memories of how we got there have apparently been erased.  I've seen a lot of "this team ain't as gooder as the 2019 team..."   Well, we don't know that, do we.  It's lost twice.  Both times in OT.  If you're complaining about that you should probably go fuck yourself.

This ain't bitchin' because we lost.  As ridiculous as it sounds, coming off the FUGA game, I had zero expectations for last night. For Arkansas, that was their Auburn/Kentucky....Auburn/Alabama.  20,000 plus fans willing their team to an upset over the #1 team, who yes, is short-handed.  As has been said, we have a lot of games to go, and this is probably the best time to hit a few bumps in the road.  The only thing that matters is playing well come tourney time, and getting in a favorable bracket.

Now, to bitch.  I'm sincerely hoping that Bruce learned from last night, that when the seconds are winding down, and you have the ball in your hands and the game on the line, it's okay to call timeout and make sure the best player in the country touches the ball on that last possession. I don't care if there are 3 seconds left, you saw what Jabari is more than capable of at the end of overtime.

However, I can answer my own post by saying I got one of the 35 in-game calls from the BIL right after regulation, with him asking that very same question.  Why would you not run a play for Jabari. Let me share my answer.  Because we don't have a play for Jabari.  We don't have plays, period.  From the day Bruce coached his first game at AU, the total sum of his half court offense has been, move it around the perimeter to see if there's an open shot, or let the guard create.  That's it.

Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine, but I'm really just making an observation, one that I've made numerous times during his tenure.  The difference is that now, he's stockpiled talent that can come at you in waves.  I've accepted that it is what it is, and what it is, is damn successful.

To me, free throws lost that game.  But please, get the damn ball to Jabari.

Hard to be upset by an OT conference loss on the road.

I think KD has been reading too much of his press.  Love the guy, but he can't do everything.

Wen had been driving and getting layups in the last couple minutes of the game...tied up near the buzzer, I though victory was assured: either a bucket or two foul shots for the Wen-win.  Instead he threw one up from Little Rock.

Awful officiating, once again, of course.

Yes.  Our misses at the line hurt.  But the loss came at the other end.

AU went up five with 2:40 remaining.  From that point on, Arkansas scored SIXTEEN FUCKING POINTS at the line.  Sixteen.  Twelve fouls called on AU, ONE on Arkansas.  If you look at the last three minutes of regulation, AU was hit with four fouls.  Arky?  None.

I usually don't bitch about that because over time it tends to even out.  But that was outrageous.

I only got to listen and Sonny was pretty pissed.  "Well, we got fouled by every player on the floor and some off the bench on that play, but they called it on us..."

It didn't even out.  When a team makes TWO shots over eight minutes of game time, it should NOT score 21 fucking points.  Capice?

Vanderbilt comes calling tonight for an 8:00 CT contest.  That's 5:17 Mountain Time with Tiger Walk starting at the north end of Haley Center at 4:45.

Vanderbilt comes in at 13-11 and are led by Scottie Pippen, Jr. with right at 19 ppg.  They average 8.4 three pointers a game and 69 total points per game.

Auburn (23-2) is coming off a fairly easy win against Texas A&M.  They jumped out on the Aggies and seemed to keep a 15-20 point lead most of the day, without letting A&M make much of a run, like most teams seem to do.

I thought Lord Bruce's bunch looked like they were running some semblance of a motion offense at times, which is unusual.  As a result, they got a ton of good looks at the basket from behind the arc, but damn, were they cold.  I haven't looked at any stats, but it seems like the Tigers have really cooled off from the 3-point line in recent games, as a whole.

Here's to AU handling that business tonight.

That's the Jabari Smith I want to see.  Not just because he went off for 30+. Yes, that was nice.  More because he was finally a little selfish, and played with swagger.  A little cockiness. There were several times he'd drain one, and look over at the Vandy bench with a smirk, like you can't stop this.

BTW, am I being way too Captain Obvious here in saying, the refs in this league are garbage?

On another note, I watched a little of Gonzaga's game last night.  They were looking incredible on the road against 7-20 Pepperdine. (1-11 in conference)  The 700-800 crazed fans in attendance were making it hard on the Zags, but they didn't seem phased at all by the noise.

I'm sure this win will give them some serious momentum heading into their upcoming monumental clash with the Pacific Mount Saint Santa Clara Barbara Anteater Thingies.

Clearly deserving of the #1 slot.

I watched some of their game too.  I'm probably missing a lot, but I don't understand the fascination with this team.

I've seen them in three games.  Absolutely dominated by bama's speed and size.  They had no answer for the athleticism.  Playing against St. Mary's --with  ESPN screaming how legit Mary is. St Mary's is a bunch of slow white guys. Their point guard looked 40 years old.  He was fucking bald.  Not shaved head, but fucking bald like an old man.  He was great at dribbling in circles.

I mean seriously... look at this fuck....

THAT'S the kind of player Gonezooga is making its rep against.  He looks like the guitarist for a bad 80s cover band, for fuck's sake.

Then I watched some of them against Peppermint last night.

I don't get it.  The center that ESPN jerks off to at night?  He's a toothpick.  Kessler has (legitimately, no exaggeration) 60+ pounds on the kid.  Kessler is more athletic and is much better with the ball in his hands around the basket.  The Gonzo kid is nothing but rangy elbows and skinny knees.  The whole team just looked... dull.

Look, I get how a disciplined team with solid basic fundamentals can win games.  But going 29-0 in THAT league?  Most of the teams in the SEC could do it.  They aren't really tested until tournament time.  That factors in their favor because they don't have the physical grind that teams from the ACC/SEC have during the season.

So I looked at their tournament history.  Hmmmm.

Final Four last year.  Beat Norfolk State, Oklahoma (16-11), Creighton, USC and UCLA to get there.  Only USC was legit and that's questionable because they didn't play outside the PAC10 all season.

2019 Elite Eight - Fairleigh Dickinson, Baylor, Florida State, Lost to Texas Tech

2018 - Sixteen - UNC Greensboro, Ohio State, Lost to FSU

2017 Final Four - South Dakota State, Northwestern, West Virginia, Xavier, South Carolina, lost to UNC.

2016 - Sixteen - Seton Hall, Utah, Lost to Syracuse

2015 - Eight - North Dakota State, Iowa, UCLA, lost to Duke

2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010  - Bounced in second round by Arizona, Wichita State, OSU, BYU and Syracuse respectively.

2009 - Akron, Western Kentucky, Lost to UNC

2008 - Lost in first round to Davidson

I see three things from that.

1) They make the tourney by racking up wins in a shitty, horrible conference full of kids that would never play in the SEC/ACC
2) They only have to really play one game a season and it's typically a loss
3) They get the most favorable bracket seeding I've ever seen.  Their path to a deeper run is RIDICULOUSLY easy in the years they've done it.

I know Auburn's basketball program has traditionally sucked donkey ass, but I firmly believe that if our Tigres played in THAT slow ass league?  We'd be looking at a 15-20 year run of NCAA tourney appearances with about the same results to show for it.

Mark Few has done a great job putting together a really talented and consistent program. They traditionally play a tough OOC schedule, which they did again this year.  Wins over UCLA and Texas Tech are solid resume builders.  But they lost badly to a barely above average Alabama.  They also lost to Duke, who is pretty decent this year, but not great by any means. No real shame in any of that.

But as K said, the rest of that schedule is like playing a bunch of 6A High School teams.  And as he also laid out, they choke in the tourney year after year after year.  They've proven they can't survive that gauntlet.  So, why do they keep getting rewarded?  I understood Cincinnati making the playoffs in foosballz.  Different scenario altogether, and I believe the committee was kind of pushed to let a Group of 5 school in to if they could compete.  But March Madness allows 173 teams in.  Gonzaga is going to get in, regardless.  Why reward them with a #1 seed for playing that schedule every year?

It’s my thought that the powers that be on the selection committee and in the media are dying for that Cinderella story they want to hype.  It’s why that creepy old nun from that creepy team got all the air time.  They want to create the narrative that any team really can win it.  Every year they fall into the trap that a bunch of white boys from fruitville are that giant slayer.  And they open the door with a shockingly easy regional path.  Of all the prior zonga iterations I do believe this is the least talented.  There are some sec teams they’d beat just because they are disciplined and some sec teams play about 90% on emotion.  But on any given night I’d take Tennessee, KY, LSU, Arky, Florida, and us straight up over them.  In the SEC that’s a 16-10 type team at best.

It’s kind of like Oklahoma in football.  So hungry to re-establish the myth of the Little 12 they don’t learn from watching the Sooners get their shit pushed in Year in and year out.

It’s my thought that the powers that be on the selection committee and in the media are dying for that Cinderella story they want to hype.  It’s why that creepy old nun from that creepy team got all the air time.  They want to create the narrative that any team really can win it.

I pretty much agree with both of you on this topic, but I'll admit to wanting a Cinderella story.  It's fun watching those teams get hyped and advance.  15s and 16s winning first round games is exciting and good for the game.

I'm the same way.  Love to see George Mason, or Butler or Loyola Chicago advance through the tourney.  But yeah, that Nun creeped me out too.  And I used to be a fan of the Zongaga's making noise.  But that shit got old a while back.

We'll probably drop another game or two. Hope not.  But getting beat by Arkansas, who was on an 8 game winning streak, on the road, in overtime...and getting replaced at #1 by a team that beat the San Louis Obispo Jack Legs, pisses me off.

I'm really glad the polls don't mean a whole lot.

Gon-Fucking-Zoga loses to a 2A private school team full of slow white boys ...... and stays at #1.

Auburn, meanwhile, slides to 5.  Kentucky drops to 7.

The usual suspects ... Duke, Kansas, Arizona ... slide into the 2,3,4 slots.

So much bullshit.

Zoga is a fraud.

The SEC Championship is ours for the taking, staring tonight with Miss. State on the road.  This team lives and dies by its guard play, which has been sorely lacking the last couple of weeks.  Time to get that mojo back for the last two games and take that trophy home.

Maybe now they can relax.  Get back to having fun.

Last few weeks they’ve been playing like the weight of the world is on their shoulders.  Pressing.  Like it’s a chore.

SeC title is in the rear view now.

Co-SEC Champs at worst.  We will NOT lose Saturday at home for the outright crown.  Rant:

I had a meeting last night (With some blackened shrimp, a twice baked potato and a couple of bourbon and DCP's) so I didn't get home to turn the game on until about 11 minutes to go.  I saw one bucket from a guard, two turnovers in a row and a horribly missed shot from Flanigan, and Cambridge miss his 330th 3-point shot this year.  And at the end of regulation, I watched Bruce Pearl contort his body in a way that allowed him to stick his head up his own ass...again.

I love Bruce Pearl.  Best thing that ever happened to Auburn basketball, and maybe Auburn athletics in general.  But sometimes, the man frustrates me more than when I can't find that one transgender porn clip on pornhub.....wait.....what?  I mean, basketball.  Yeah.

If you go back in this thread, you'll find where I was bitching about the same thing.  End of regulation.  Auburn has the ball with the chance to take the last shot and win it.  You have arguably the best player in the nation.  A 6'10", top 3 NBA Lottery pick who can shoot over anybody in the country.  You call a time out and set up a play to get him the ball in a good position.....right?  Obviously.  Nope.  Not Bruce Pearl.  Never!!!  Play on.

Helter skelter, pandemonium ensues.  Yeah, Jabari eventually gets the ball, only because Wendell Green, Jr. unbelievably couldn't find a way to shit all over himself.  But he gets it with 2 seconds on the clock, 100 feet from the basket with 2 guys in his face. Overtime.

There was no play run for Jabari because Bruce Pearl has no plays for Jabari.  Play on.  Maybe you can find Cambridge in the corner for another 3.

Fortunately, the light came on in overtime for the guards and we saw what this team is capable of when the guards do guard things on both ends of the floor. Scored 21 points in the second half.  Scored 20 in 5 minutes of overtime.

I have been rooting for Flanigan to make it back from his Achilles tear harder than most, because I feel his pain.  He's just more of a liability out there though it seems.  Every time he tries to make a move to the basket he almost falls over and his 3 point shot has as much touch as a bull in a china shop.

What we saw in the OT might be Auburn's best chance to make a deep run in the tourneys...playing 3 guards.  Let KD do KD things.

Either 3 guards or move Jabari up to the 3, Williams or Cardwell at the 4 and Kessler at the 5.

So, did you rupture your Ah-Kill-Eez?  I've known a couple of peeps who did and that seems to be some nasty stuff.

Yep, Flanigan has lost it in all aspects of the game.  Punt, pass & kick.  Which actually, that looks like what he's doing every time he touches the ball.  It looks like his confidence level is at negative eleventeen.

This is not in the same universe as a torn achilles, but I recall my very last game in a team sport.  Volleyball.  Yes, I know, you see the freakishly athletic body (Pillsbury Dough Boy) and think I would be far better suited for the NFL or NBA, (Golf) but I'm kind of an all-around athlete(Couch Potato).  I planted to make my usual 5-6 foot jump (3.5") at the net for another highlight reel spike,(Get roofed as usual) and stopped in my tracks.  I turned around, mad as hell and wondering why would somebody hit me in the calf with a baseball.  In a volleyball game, no less.

There was no one over there. Uh-oh!  This was rec league and the team we were playing was from a local hospital.  A couple of them came over and said, "Yep, you tore your calf."

Again, thankfully my superior athleticism(I moonlight doing "Before" photo shoots) allowed me to hop on one leg all the way from the gym out to my car. (They happened to have a wheelchair handy)

How did you pop your tendon?

Crazy enough, I was playing C league slow pitch softball, in left field.  Looping line drive came along and I backpeddled a little to catch it.  The left field fence is about a foot from our junior high gym (brick building).  Almost as soon as I caught the ball I hear what I thought was a gunshot.  Caught it, looked around to see what the hell that was, took my first step in and immediately fell over.  The orthopedic surgeon told me afterward that it was like trying to sew a mop head together there were so many strands loose.

That was at the end of September 2010 and I wasn't able to make a game until the Georgia game that November.  Started back playing ball again the next May but it was a couple years before I felt right playing again.

I submit to you the proposition that Bruce Pearl is now the greatest coach in Auburn athletic history.

He's elevated Auburn basketball to a level that's virtually inconceivable when you consider where it was when he arrived.  What he's done for Auburn basketball is similar to what Pat Dye did for Auburn football. Except Auburn football wasn't lying at the bottom of a decades old barrel, rotting away in a hopeless, helpless mire.  Auburn football had tradition and history.  Auburn basketball did not.  That's being created right now, in front of our eyes.

- Auburn now has as many SEC regular season titles under Bruce Pearl as it had in its entire history before him.
- This is the fourth 25+ win season since Pearl became head coach. Prior to Pearl, Auburn had one (one) season of 25 or more wins.

- This is the third season under Pearl that AU will lose fewer than 10 games. Prior? Once since 1990.  Before that you have to go back to Joel Eaves and the 20-game schedules to find more.

- Pearl has a winning record in the SEC in four of the last five seasons.  A 10-6 SEC record in 08-09 under Lebo, a 9-7 record in 99-00 and a 14-2 in 98-99 under Cliff Ellis are the only other winning SEC records in 30 years.  Sonny Smith had three total 11-7 in 87-88, 13-5 in 85-86 and and 12-6 in 83-84.  Joel Eaves only had four total winning SEC seasons in the 60s.  Pearl tied that this season.

I know it's easy to grow jaded and spoiled by success.  But I'm telling you, sirs and madams (you know who you are), we are witness to the greatest period in Auburn basketball history.  Savor it.

Lifetime contract is nice, but we better honor the man.  I want my grandkid's grandkids to know his name, the same way I knew Cliff Hare.  I want them to revere it the way I did the names Joel Eaves and Ralph Jordan without really even knowing who they were.

Tourney time is here finally.  I was really hoping yesterday morning's game would go 6 overtimes, but was glad to see the collie molesters take down the Kessler wannabee.

Can our guards do enough to take the first step toward the hall of fame a tourney title?

Will last night's loss by bammer be enough to drop them from the 3 line in the NCAAT?

Will goat boy perform at halftime?

The Tahd has no business making the tourney.  Yes, they had what I would consider 4 big time quality wins.  Zaga, Houston, Tennessee and Arkansas.  Now, consider that they lost twice to Auburn and twice to Kentucky. They also lost to Davidson, Iona, Memphis, Missouri, Vanderbilt and 1-17 Georgia, to name a few.  They didn't get to 20 wins (19-13) and currently own a 3 game losing steak....and 4 out the last 5.

How is that tournament worthy?  Not singling out Bama because they're our rival.  But the only thing being talked about is whether they'll get a 5 or a 6 seed.

Been at work and saw none of the game.  Just going by the comments I've been reading and hearing this afternoon.  Sounds like Lord Bruce decided no adjustments to the game plan were needed.  If you aren't hitting 3's, you're bigger and stronger than A&M inside, so why not change it up and attack with Kess and Jabari from 12 feet and in?  GH and GF texted me that KD was 0-14???  Fo realz?

KD has to get his early season scowl back by next week.

aTm had a similar game plan to the one that got them the W against Florida.  Instead of using Jabari to work around that and open things up, we decided to shoot 114,329 three pointers in the first half.  We did hit like 2 of them, for a percentage of 0.0000101+54164651651515 or somewhere near that.
Green did shoot us back into it late, but it was too late.
KD is in a funk and has been for a month.  He needs to keep taking the ball to the rack and stop trying to hit the 3 and maybe they will come naturally later.

Oh, and today was the first time I have actually seen Jabari pressing.  He was trying too hard to carry the team.
If Kessler can get the shoulder healed by next Thursday/Friday maybe some of that pick and pop game can make a return as well.

Here is hoping Stella gets her groove back.....this draw is winnable.
