I've read the first four books (will be purchasing number five soon).  I've seen season one.

I need to see season two soon.  It's a really good show.  Unfortunately, they overdo it on the sex scenes, so my wife just sees it as filth.  There's a lot of sex in the books, but HBO took it to a whole new level.

I just started watching it and burned through the first two seasons. The sex is overwrought but that's HBO. The action is very good and the acting really carries it.

Never read the books. Worth a peep?

The books are ten times better than the show, but they are a chore to read.  1000+ pages each.  Lots of minute details.  But I've enjoyed them.

I'll give the first one a shot then.

I'll say this on the nudity side. At least it's more justified and better than the skin on 'Girls.'

I'm so glad I didn't read the books before. Reading them from behind with the faces in mind is better.

Knowing what was going to happen would have diminished the complete emotional drain left when the show ended.

Was simply speechless.

Compare this to The Sopranos. Which is better in your mind?

Long-term quality, Sopranos definitely. Will never be a better series.  Every time I watch a random episode I'm amazed at all that is packed into each one.  Each episode is almost like an entire season of development.

I was lamenting the slow drag of this Thrones season where nothing happened -- until last night.

It's well done, no doubt.  But since The Sopranos was not taking a book and adapting it, but was written specifically for the medium it remains the best television show ever and I don't think anything can come close.

Thrones can definitely leave you speechless, though.

That last night was the equivalent of Ziva David killing McGee, Tony and Abby on NCIS or Otis slaughtering Andy, Barney, Opie and Aunt Bee.

That emotional drain was there and better when that book chapter ended.  More happens in the book to completely eviscerate your guts.

I'll get there.  I just don't want to get ahead.

Having watched first and then read I enjoy the books a lot better.  There are too many people to keep them all separate in my mind without the show giving me the mental template for what each looks like.
