Not sure how SPOILERS a guy getting cut up, taunted, stabbed with a spear, then the other dude getting skullfucked is meh exactly. I thought it was the usual insert the knife and twist move of this show. I'm convinced SPOILERS e'rrbody gonna die on this show.

I had mentioned to Uncle Sani the other day that George R. R. Martin was finishing up the script for Season 5...

I think this is the last season I will watch.

From about this point on the books start to really suck.  The guy fell in love with the sound of his own voice. The next book is really stupid in terms of character development.  Things happen for no reason. He spends 500 pages of a 600 page novel describing food and clothing.  New people show up who don't matter to anybody or anything.

If they follow the books from here out, it's not worth watching.  Not even Dany's unique hotness can save it.

Ok, so obviously I didn't quit watching.  I'm there to the end.

I figure either lots of people are going to die this week or it's going to be the biggest fake-off in history and the real army of the dead will show up in King's Landing and the decision will be whether or not to engage them there and save Cersi's reign.

I do like this series.  I like the way it has this almost Vince McMahon-esque quality of taking a good guy and turning him bad or taking a bad guy and turning him good.  The heel/face turns keep people engaged.  Take Jamie Lannister.  Asshole of the universe in season one, but now it's hard not to be on his side.  Hate The Hound, love the Hound. Despise entitled bitch Sansa, like queen bitch Sansa.

I used to love Danerys but I've grown sick and tired of her self-righteous posturing.  Sam summed her up quite succinctly when he asked John if she'd give up her crown.

The only two characters that have been consistent are Tyrion and Cersei.

It's still not The Sopranos. But it's pretty good.

Meanwhile, Avengers Endgame....

So I was somewhat underwhelmed by Avengers Endgame.

I was seriously disappointed in the Battle for Winterfell on last night's Game of Thrones.

For eight years they built up the coming threat from the Night King and his army of undead.  And then in about 44 minutes of so-blurry-you-couldn't-tell-what-was-going-on action he was dispatched by a simple knife prick.  This after absorbing a lengthy blast of dragon fire with no ill effects and waking the dead (and long dead) with a smug wave of his hands.

I realize the series is barreling to its end and I realize that that bloated sack of lazy goo George RR Martin wrote them into a box with an inconvenient white walker mythology that needed at this point to really just get the fuck out of the way so we can reach the end of the journey for Jon, Ceirsi, Dany, Sansa, Arya, Jamie and Tyrion.

But to get the entire threat the fuck out of the way like THAT?  With no exposition, no explanation of what they really wanted and how they intended to get it?  It felt incomplete. It felt rushed.  It, for the first time, really felt formulaic.  Last night was not great television.  It was not up to the standards of the show that came before it.  It was not worthy.

First, what the fuck with Bran?  While all that's going on he's got his eyes rolled back into his head, flapping around with crows and offering nothing of substance or help.  We didn't even get to find out what he was doing with the damn birds or what he intended to see.

So the Night King walks up to him.  What does he want? What's his purpose?  And why did Theon's stupid ass run at him like a drunken monkey instead of offering a defensive, fighting posture and at least having a chance.  Such a stupid suicide run.  The ignorance of that moment took away any emotion I might have felt when Theon died.

What a wasted opportunity in the crypt.  How utterly cool would it have been to see a blue eyed Ned Stark crawl out of the crypt and try to murder Sansa?  Oh wait, he was beheaded.  That might not have worked.  I don't know.  Wasn't Robb or his mom down there?  Let one of them do it then.  Just an opportunity squandered you ask me.

That whole episode looked to me like a cross between The Walking Dead and World War Z with a little bit of "kill the head vampire" lore from any of a hundred different movies tossed in.  It just wasn't what I'd been led to believe or hoped for.

The decision to bath the battle in dark tones and make the action nearly indistinguishable was a bad one. Very bad.

Also disappointing was the too-convenient decision to only remove a few fringe characters and leave the primary ensemble intact.  That was formula television, not Game of Thrones.  I didn't want to see any of them die, but I didn't want to see Robb, Ned, Littleweiner, Roz, or many of the others fall either.   The fact that in the past that was possible helped elevate the show.  Making all the "big stars" untouchable detracts from that.

Only three episodes left.  I've got a feeling this series like far too many others is going to limp to the line.

I agree with pretty much all of this, so let me hit the highlights for emphasis:

44 minutes of so-blurry-you-couldn't-tell-what-was-going-on action

Quote
The decision to bath the battle in dark tones and make the action nearly indistinguishable was a bad one. Very bad.

This can't be overstated.  What a clusterfuck of a visual fail.  What a goddamned travesty of cinematography.  Or maybe it was just a tight-budgeted cop-out.  There was an Endgame-level of CGI needed for that episode.  Whatever their reason, it fucking failed.  What an unwatchable pile.

Quote

These two I think are knee-jerk.  I say that with my own knee landing quite the uppercut.  Those are too glaringly obvious to be the penultimate scenes of those characters (I hope.)  Presumably the writers have a couple of last appearances for the stupid and immobile.

Quote
What a wasted opportunity in the crypt.

Totally agree on this point, but for a different reason.  The lame, low-energy, decrepit corpses would have been way more exciting as a bunch of speed zombies like their counterparts on the upper levels.

More convinced now than ever everyone who is a major player is going to sit down at a long table in the last episode and...cut to black.

You can feel it from a mile away. As sure as Auburn after a first down is running a power dive up the middle on hurry up. It's fated.

As tired as I am of RR Martin's name, shaggy face and the near-endless prattling about clothes and food that made up 94.311% of his last few books, I really think that the people making this show completely lost their way without the source material.

I still like watching it.  I still want to see how it ends, but my hopes for anything approaching greatness have faded significantly.  Right up until the end of Martin's books, the series did a really good job of breathing life into the characters, establishing the proper tone and setting up the shocking reveals that elevated GOT from a bad medieval show into something that begged to be watched.  They seemed to keep most of that momentum through Tommen's marriage to Margery, Cersei's revenge on the Sparrows and Tommen's response to that act.

But this?  Yeeshka.  They had years to get this right and if this is what they've come up with I'm staggeringly disappointed.

White walkers are, I suppose, just gone.  No explanation of their burning symbols, no exposition on their purpose or any of that.

Last night's episode was one of just three remaining and it was really a waste of time.  Maybe it was trying to set something up, but if so, that's the third of six final episodes that was essentially filler.  The one that wasn't was so poorly conceived and executed that it should be literally executed.

Maybe the last two episodes can surprise me, but this series is feeling a whole hell of a lot more like Lumberjack Dexter than it is Newhart wakes up from a dream.
