We're still weeks away from March Madness and there's a foot or two of snow on the ground in the northeast. But, down in south Florida, the crack of the bat is already in the air. Have you checked out any off-season trades?
The Cubbies won their first series since the Civil War. They're loaded again so is there more or less pressure on them? I never bought the "Champions = Target on their backs" theory. It's a 162 game season. Nobody is getting any extra juice to beat them every game out. Talent and consistency wins out most times in MLB.
I'm about done with this being the Washington Nationals year....again....and again. All indications are they're stacked again, but until they do something besides choke and gag like a Falcons' 4th quarter, they're just that fly in the ointment, Hans.
Dodgers. $894 skwazillion dollah payroll. Playoff Kershaw = 4th Quarter Falcons Defense. I'm a Falcons fan but hey, this is kind of fun. Until they prove it....nope!
St. Louis rebound? Unfortunately, they just lost Reyes, the #3 starter to Tommy John surgery. I still always expect them to contend. To me, the Cardinals are the best, most consistent professional franchise in all the major sports for at least the last 20 plus years. Haven't checked the records but I guarantee they match up against any franchise in sports.
My Braves? They went from the worst in baseball the first half of the season to a pretty competitive club by season's end. In fact, they ruined a few teams' post season hopes. Their farm system really produced some young talent last year like SS, Dansby Swanson. They added a couple of veterans, most notably, Matt Kemp, that gave them a solid line up. I just saw where they signed Brandon Phillips from the Reds. The guy is 35 but hit .292 last year with 11 HR and 64 RBI's. I always hated that guy because he's cocky, brash and everything you hate from an opposing player....that always seems to kick your ass. Now he's a Brave. Love me some Brandon.
Definitely not a fan of signing two pitchers from the Geriatrics League in Bartolo Colon and R.A. Dickey. Maybe they'll be solid. Who knows? Overall, I think they'll be much improved. Contenders? No way. But without any expectations, they should be fun to watch.
What about your club?

They've got uniforms and everything. It's really great.

(Never thought I'd say this, but...)
Buzz you aren't allowed to bitch. You're inside the 5 year window of a championship. Sorry.
Cards will struggle for a wild card spot, losing Reyes will hurt, but we didn't pick up a bat in the offseason, and that will hurt more.
On the plus side, Metallica is playing at Busch on June 4th.

Amen to Metallica!
On the Cubs, well, I truly expect to see them in the WS. They may not win it but they still have the bats and have improved ther mound even after Chapman. My one concern is losing our AU homie at catcher. I seriously have concern about this.
-
The rangers should win a bunch of games, maybe close to 100.
Then get swept in the first round of the playoffs.

For Buzzer. You guys may have seen this many times but I just heard about it this morning. Good stuff for baseball fans but good Cub on Cub prank. (Even though I consider Maddox a Braves HOF'er. Yep, I'm claiming him. You can't have him).

Seriously? 17 venues? That's awesome. I keep saying I'm going to bucket list a bunch of sports venues and try to hit one or two every year.....but sadly, I never follow through. Fenway is the one baseball must see. Saw Wrigley in the off season.
I'm going to wait until the Braves are at least 7 games out. (Two weeks in) Despite a non-contending team, I imagine the novelty of the new stadium will keep it pretty full early on.

Fulton County stadium mid to late 80's. Get in for a dollar on military ID, have your own section with own beer guy. :bar:

Aside from Busch, which I'm obviously biased about, PNC Park is my favorite.

I think some have gotten out of hand on both sides of the issues when it comes to politics. I found this piece when searching a Braves site, listing different stories from around the league. I saw absolutely nothing wrong with Fowler's comments and find it hard to believe anyone could. Sorry, forgot to copy/pasta the site. BTW, I think Fowler is going to show out in a Cards uni.
Dexter Fowler made quite the first impression with St. Louis Cardinals fans.
The center fielder, who is from Atlanta and was drafted in 2008 by the Colorado Rockies from Milton High School, described to ESPN over the weekend how President Donald Trump’s proposed travel ban affected his wife’s Iranian family.
Fowler’s wife, Aliya, is a U.S. citizen who emigrated from Iran with her parents when she was 5. Her grandparents and extended family still live in Iran. The couple have a 3-year-old daughter.
Asked his opinion on the ban, Fowler said: “It’s huge. Especially any time you’re not able to see your family, it’s unfortunate.â€
Fans on the “St. Louis Carindals True Fans†Facebook page did not respond well to the comment and engaged in an often foul-language exchange debating the merit of his words.
Some fans voiced support, others called on Fowler to “shut up,†stay out of politics, or be removed from the team.
Fowler joined the Cardinals on a five-year, $82.5 million contract after hitting .276 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs in his second season with the Chicago Cubs, helping the franchise to its first championship since 1908.

Checking out the probable Cubbies roster for 2017. Could change. Need some input from Buzz here to fill in the blanks. My initial thoughts are that if they stay relatively injury free, they should be playing in October again.
Pitching may be getting a little long in the tooth with John Lackey and John Lester, both 84 years old. Seems like it anyway. But they're both still dealing and with Kyle Kendrick and Jake Arrieta, the first 4 will be formidable. BTW, have any of you checked out Major League rosters lately? The dang pitchers are huge. Across the board. Take the Cubs for instance. You've watched "crafty" left and right handers, Lester and Lackey, right? Those two guys are 6'4" 240 and 6'6" 235 respectively. Any of you play high school or above baseball? Have you ever stepped in against a guy 6'4" 240 with nasty stuff?
I need Buzzer help here. I recognized no one from the bullpen. Input?
Catchers. May be a problem. Contrares and Montero don't have killer numbers but with most teams, if the catcher can call a good game, play good defense and handle the pitchers, an average hitter will do. Buzz?
Infield. Injury free and it's freakin' stacked. Huge power on the corners with Bryant and Rizzo with Addison Russell picking everything up the middle. I saw Ben Zobrist on the roster. Solid! Not sure who 2nd base is.
Outfield. Another big question for me because I'm not that familiar with all the names. Jason Heyward is Gold Glove every year but damn, he sucks at the plate. I have no clue what kind of outfielder Kyle Schwarber is but he's a beast at the plate. Missed most of last year but killed it in the series.
Calling all Buzzers for input. That's just me checking the roster with my limited fanboy knowledge. Need some expert, homer 411.
I want to check Jarhead's Cardinals next. (Best franchise in professional sports IMO) Then my American League Bandwagon team, the Red Sachs.
-
Cubbies' starting pitching should be solid, even though a couple of these guys are already getting their AARP benefits. The bullpen was kind of the weak link last season and may be again this season, although they made about twentylevenhundred moves to try and shore it up. Losing Chapman didn't help, but they traded for Wade Davis who seems to be a pretty solid closer. They will still have the wildcards in the pen with Strop and Rondon. Carl Edwards, Jr. has some really good stuff, but he was young and inconsistent in 2016. Hopefully some of the new guys (Never heard of most these guys) will be able to plug in well.
The infield will be, well, solid. Rizzo, Baez, Russell and Bryant are all young, athletic and can hit a ton. Barring injuries, that's the best infield in the majors.
The outfield is a question mark. Losing Dexter Fowler to the cheaters will really hurt offensively and defensively this year. Heyward will be spectacular again defensively. He's been working all offseason on changing his swing, so who knows if he hits this year or not. He bring Jobu rum and cigars. Jobu will come. Schwarber will be shaky at best in left, but will catch a little too. He may end up the leadoff hitter, which may prove to be interesting. Almora Jr. is the first option in center. He has a very solid glove, but an Olive Oyl bat.
Contreras is going to be very good behind the plate and he can hit well already. Montero is a great catcher, but he's never going to see north of Mendoza. Throw in Schwarber to spell them both and you have a solid half of the battery imo.
I don't expect to see them run roughshod through the NL Central like last season, but if the pitching holds up, they should be in contention all season.
-
Good stuff.
Interesting how good an athlete Carl Edwards is. Steps out of a race car and right into the Major Leagues.
:civic:
-
I expect the Cubs to win the Central, but I am not sure they will win running away like they did last year.
For the Redbirds, I really like what Fowler has brought to the dugout, they seem so much more happy this year. It all comes down to pitching, though, and two guys from last year that either weren't playing (Lynn, 0-1, 2.00 ERA) or were having a shitty year (Wacha, 2- 0, 1.38 ERA) both seem to have figured something out in spring training. I expect this to be the year that Waino (1-0, 3.00 ERA) passes the torch to Martinez (1-0, 0.00 era) as the staff ace. Granted, these are all spring training stats, but something to build on. As for the #5 starter, Reyes was poised to come in as a rookie, but he's having Tommy John surgery, so Mike Leake (2-1, 4.20 ERA). Bullpen should be.. fine? Maybe?.. Looks like Oh is moving to the closer role, Rosenthal is having a decent spring, and Siegrest and Broxton are just ok.
Molina still at C (and Cards now have his heir as his backup, Carson Kelly), and Wong at 2B, but Cards are moving a healthy Peralta to 3B, so Second year player Diaz can stay at SS, and moving Carpenter to 1B. Fat Matt Adams has slimmed down, losing 30 pounds, but will now come in off the bench. Outfield, should be Grichuk, Fowler, and Piscotty.
Questions I have.. How much longer can Molina play? This is his last year under contract with both sides having an option for 2018 (and Buzz smiles). Granted, I'm biased, but in my mind, he's the best catcher in the game. That throw to Biaz in the WBC was sick. And he's 34 years old, an age when most all-star catchers are moved to First Base. Granted, he's not on the roster for his bat, but last year was the first time in a 8 years he didn't win the Gold Glove (although he was the league leader in fielding percentage, passed balls, and putouts). I'd hate for him to have a down year, and the Cards chose not to extend his contract. Although I'm not sure what his market value would be. After Pujols bolting, I'm not sure the fans could handle the other well established lifetime Cardinal bolting (they are dying to put up a new statue around the stadium, and had Pujols not left, it would have been him, and he could have run for mayor and governor).
Again, I like what Fowler has brought to the team. Players seem happier, they seem like they are having more fun.
My expectations are that we will contend for one of the WC slots vs the loser of the Giants/Dodgers, along with the Mets (assuming the Nats will win the east). From the central, thinking the Pirates may be good as well.

I like the way you think. Also far enough out to clear the calendar and make the arrangements.
I'm taking this under advisement and will meet with the planning committee for possible approval. (Translation: Begging Snagette for a kitchen pass and permission to take my nuttz with me)

There's still time to make plans and tell the skirt I'm going beg for a kitchen pass. That sounds very doable.

Jar, is Jose Oquendo still doing any coaching? Didn't he have some health problems or something last year? Seems I recall an article about some of the players being psyched about getting to work with him again. Or maybe that was just those 5 bowls of weed and the hit of acid I just dropped.

Anyone catch the US win over the Dominicans? Great ballgame. You should watch a replay if you can.

He had knee problems and is now "special assistant to the gm"

Hey Snaggs,
What's the current story with Brandon Philips? Is he going to be the opening day starter at 2nd?
-
Hey Snaggs,
What's the current story with Brandon Philips? Is he going to be the opening day starter at 2nd?
I don't think there's any doubt. Jace Peterson has been there for the most part the last two years but he just hasn't done anything at the plate. I was stoked to get Phillips, even at his "advanced" age. I should be so advanced. Stoked because I hated that guy. I think he hit a double every time he batted against the Braves the last 10 years.
He had a Sports Center highlight the other night, starting a double play by flipping it behind his back. Dude can ball and will be a definite upgrade.
-
Here's a good Brandon Phillips highlight...

Phillips was just tired of those cheatin' Cards. :poke:
Ironic you posted that because I watched a little of the Bravos and Detroit last night. Verlander was dealing for the Tigers and the Braves had Jaime Garcia on the mound. I assume that was the same Garcia that came sprinting in from the bump.
-
Was reading a little on AUTiger1's Baltimore GloryHoles. The piece I read said they'll be picked at or near last like they are every year. And then they'll be right at the top again, like they are every year. They made the playoffs in 2012, 2014 and 2016.
Starting pitching may be the only problem but the bullpen is off the charts good with closer, Zach Britton (0.54 ERA) closing 47-47 games. That's sick!
Manny Machado (37 HR) and Chris Davis on the corners gives them serious pop. JJ Hardy will again be one of the best short stops in the game. Outfield has Adam Jones playing in a white man's league. Matt Wieters won't be behind the dish for the first time since 2009.
Buck "I Shoulda' Used Britton" Showalter is a helluva manager. BTW, the criticism for not using Britton is overblown, IMO. Yeah, you don't leave him in the pen during the playoffs, but the game went 11 innings. They would have used him in the 9th and taken him out after a scoreless inning.
AU1, you got any 411 on your Birds?

I saw that. I don't think that was Phillips' first rodeo starting some sh*t. But this below was funny to me. Watch Uribe's reaction.

I had to ask because I actually got him somewhat early in a fantasy draft for $3. This league is full of bravos fans too, so it really surprised me. I thought maybe he had been hurt or sucked so far this year.
-

Well, I'm going to admit that's an assumption on my part. He's definitely a better, more seasoned player than Jace Peterson in every phase of the game. Plus, they signed him for $14 Large so I feel like he'll be starting regardless.
-
Damn, I love this Carlos Martinez guy. Not that he's shutting down the Cubs. Don't care about that either way. But he takes the ball, the sign, rocks and fires wicked shit. Mid to upper 90's makes all the nasty breaking stuff that much more lethal. No pretense. Give me the ball. Sign. Deliver.
That's what baseball needs.

Nice night at the ball park for me, and nice start of the season for the Rangers hot-head Rougie who started the 2017 season off with 2 home runs in 2 plate appearances. Odor is now tied with Bumgarner for most homeruns in MLB. 5 runs against Kluber was a positive sign but the bullpen man. Dyson has been lights out in WBC and spring training, but gave up 3 for the loss.
Oh well, 161 more to go...

This makes me smile. I love that this brand new, not needed, poorly thought out stadium is having the christening like this. The only bad part is it is removing hope from Braves fans early and I usually like for it to be Jun or so before they start throwing in the towel.

Damn, Buzz, I knew you guys hate us, but did you really have to hit Piscotty three times in one trip around the bases? Plunk him on his right elbow while at bat, then on his left elbow when he steals 2nd, and then for good measure, in the head when he scores?

Braves are tied 1-1 in the 10th with the Mets.
ONE freakin' run in 19 innings of play to start the season. Now, facing Noah Soundgarden and Jacob DeGrom to start it doesn't help. But.....Come on, man!
-
Well, the Bravos pick up win #1 with a 3-1 win in 12 on the road vs. the Mets. Happy to break the ice and get one in the W column. (1-1) Not too worried about wins and losses right now because they're not going to contend. Not strong enough. But they have a really good line up and I just want to see all their young guys getting better so there's some hope for the future. Could be a fun bunch to watch this year.
Of course, they're not the cheating Cards or over the top spending Cubs. But they could win a few games.

Speaking of spending... do you know which position player on the Cubs is paid the most?
So Cubs are going to be interesting in the net few years with payroll. This is Arietta's last year. Do you let him walk? He's going to command 20-25M/year (and in my mind, the best pitcher in baseball). But they have so much already tied up with Lester. And when Kobe Bryant/Rizzou/Schwarber hit FA, they aren't going to take a hometown discount. Buzz, any thoughts? And that JHey contract is going to be an Albert-tross around their neck for the next 5 years.

1-6. 380 pound, 63 year old Bartolo Colon serving up 86 m.p.h. "heaters". I didn't expect a ton this year. Competitive hopefully. And I wasn't thrilled with 9 straight on the road to start. But 1-6? Frick! And Matt Kemp just went on the 10 Day DL.

Don't worry, nobody is listening anyway.

4-5 for the Rangers with 3 blown saves in last 2 innings. Our closer gave up 3 runs on Tuesday in the ninth and his ERA went DOWN to 33.
But all in all I am not worried, assuming Dyson gets his head out of his ass.

Haven't seen it yet. I'm going to let Atlanta get at least 10 games out before I venture over. Should be in a couple of weeks. On an ATL note, Snagette and another lady are on their way over this morning with my boy and two of his friends. Mini Snags took up the bass last year and his two buddies are pretty dang skippy guitar players. Part of his Christmas present was tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers tonight. They all love the Peppers. He gets to see his hero live, playing bass.

Braves open Sun Trust Park with a 5-2 win. (3-6) Happy to get off to a good start at home after 8 on the road to start the season.
BTW, if you want to relax and take in some top shelf biebols this weekend, the Cards are at the New York Yankees for the Sunday Night Baseball game of the week. Wainright on the bump for the Birds. Good stuff!
-
Braves go 2-0 in the new park with a 4-2 win on Jackie Robinson night. (4-6) About what I've been expecting. I think they can be a .500 ball club.
The Cards continue to struggle (3-8) early with a second straight loss to the Yank Me's. Still gonna' kick back and watch tomorrow night. It's early. A lot of shuffling over the next few weeks. Cleveland and KC are at the bottom of their division but you know they'll be at the top once it plays out. The Red Birds are not a 3-8 team.
The Cubbies are also trying to find their groove at 6-5, while AU1's Baltimore Glory Holes are off to a hot (7-3) start.
I'm seriously enjoying baseball getting back in full swing. Sorry Tiger Wench decided to leave the building right about the time her Disastros got really good.
-
Biggest outburst for the ATL so far with a 9-2 win to stay perfect at the new park. It's just the Padres and we may be just a notch better than them but I'll take anything I can get.
-
Cubs drop the series to the Bucs. Not so great backend pitching after the starters do their job.

The friendly confines get the Cards back on track with a 2-1 win over the Bucco's. Cubbies coming off the wrong end of a sweep by those same Pirates are down 6-3 in the 8th to the Brew Crew. Buzzer...what up?
Bravos get a walk off hit by Dansby Swanson to sweep the Padres and pull back to .500 at 6-6. (Swanson was 2-28 coming into that at-bat....needed) Happy with how they're playing. Unfortunately, the Nationals come to town tomorrow to help reality set back in. I can see Max Scherzer throwing a 5 hit shut out and not breaking a sweat. On a side note, Freddie Freeman is killing it! 2 HR's tonight. Should be getting Matt Kemp back shortly.
Buzz, what's going on with the Cubs? Pitching? Hitting? I know it's early and the cream will rise as a 162 game season wears on. No time to panic for any team. But, do you see any issues?
-
War Eagle's Rangers are 4-8 but everyone except Houston is below .500 right now in that division. The Assthrows have had a home-heavy schedule to start. Early!
AU1's Birds are staying solid and still in 1st. (My Sox are coming bitch. That's right, I said "My Sox") Another year of the "experts" predicting bottom of the barrel and the Glory Holes proving them wrong again.
-

Neighbor went to the game last night. 20 minutes. The new park is 20 minutes for the house.

OK, we won a game yesterday. If we win today, it's called "two in a row". And if we win again tomorrow, it's called a "winning streak"... It has happened before!
Things Mike Matheny said yesterday before beating the Pirates.

I was bitchin' and moanin' at a 1-6 start. Then I was all like yeah and shit after a 5 game win streak to go 6-6. Then I was bitchin' and moanin' with a 6 game losing streak. Now I'm like all yeah and shit after 2 straight wins against the Mets. First of a double header and I think we beat Noah Soundgarden today. I think.
And how is it that the Braves start out with 8 on the road? Then home for 7 and then back out on the road for 9 straight. And 10 of those are against Mets pitching. Frick! We already suck so we don't need twice the amount of road games as home to start the season.
BTW, I noticed a series against the Cards in the ATL the weekend of May 5th. Might be just the time to plan a road trip.
Edit: It was Matt Harvey, but I'll take anything against their pitching.
-

Parmesan my panino.

Bravos come back from 2 separate 4 run deficits to beat the Brew Crew on the road, 10-8. Freddie Freeman with a 2 run blast in the top of the 9th to take the win. Three straight on the road. 9-12. Too many streaks.
The Cards take down the Reds 7-5 and in my #2 dream World Series match up, the Red Sox top the Cubbies 5-4. (#1 being the Sox and the Braves) But I'll be damned if I wouldn't pay $500-$1,000 to see a Cubs vs. Red Sox WS. Or hell, the Cards and Sox for that matter.
On another note, who the hell is this 6'7" 280 pound beast for the Yankees terrorizing outfield walls?
-
Yankme's continue to put up sick runs with a 12-4 win over the Orioles. Braves did the same with 10 last night and 11 tonight on 20 hits. Matt Kemp with 3 homers. The Cubs take down the Red Sox 7-4 in Fenway Pahk. Home of Nomah Gahshaparhah who hit em' wicked fah. Cards rained out.
My guys are on another streak and now 10-12. Just happy they're somewhat competitive and showing they can put up numbers. BTW, the Nationals lost their center fielder, Adam Eaton, for the season with a torn ACL. Weird play stepping on first base wrong trying to beat one out. Sucks.
-
Well, it looks right now all is even outside the NL East and AL West. Noteworthy, Aaron Judge of the Yankees is a damn beast. Also, the Red Sox and the Orioles still don't like each other. The Braves are still seriously Bipolar and the Astros are sick of playing second fiddle.
-
The Cards beat my Braves like a rented mule tonight. 10-0. Hey Jarhead...kiss my entire ass. I hope the Cardinals eat something rancid and puke for the next 10 days.
Probably the only way we take a game.
-
Hey, we have you 4 runs yesterday. What more do you want?
-
4-5 for the Rangers with 3 blown saves in last 2 innings. Our closer gave up 3 runs on Tuesday in the ninth and his ERA went DOWN to 33.
But all in all I am not worried, assuming Dyson gets his head out of his ass.
5-8 now...thank you. And the Rangers own the Astros, so I am not worried about them yet...

So of the teams that the few of us posters give a rat's ass about, the early season tallies look like this.
Braves: 15-21
Cubs: 18-19
Cards: 21-15
Rangers: 20-20
Orioles: 22-14
The Cards and Orioles are late in their games tonight so that will change. Obviously, the 18-19 mark by the Cubs is the biggest surprise. I honestly haven't followed it enough to know why they're light years behind their start last year. Cards, slow start. But I think it just took a series against my Braves to get their shit rolling.
As I said in some pre-season comments, the Orioles were picked, as usual, to be an also-ran in the American League and as usual, they're a fly in everybody's ointment. People betta recognize.
The Bravos are the streakiest team in baseball. 6 losses...4 wins....5 losses...3 wins... They seem to handle the fellow bottom dwellers pretty well but the Cardinals and Nationals and Astros of the world kick that ass. Like I said from the start, I think they can be a .500 club if things go right. They've proven they can damn well hit when they get on. Last night and tonight are two prime examples. 10 and 9 runs respectively. And people better start giving Freddie Freeman the love. A .343 BA with 14 HR's and 25 RBI's.
War Eagle!!! I know nothing about the Rangers except the record. Report? Playoff team?
-
The Rangers and my fantasy team will be much better when Adrian Beltre gets off the "10-day" DL.
My Cubs will contend when it's all said and done, but this is not a WS caliber team whatsoever.

Ranges vs Cubs in the WS!
-
Cubs back to .500 with win over the Reds. The only thing I can think right now is just some early minor injuries and some of the pitching just hasn't hit its groove. Like Buzz said, they will get it together but I don't see them playing in the WS.

So last night, the Braves continued another streak in beating the Blow Jays for the 3rd night in a row. They're now due for a 6 game losing streak and with the Nationals coming to town Friday, they should be able to get a good start on that. But last night, a relief pitcher for the Bravos struck out a Toronto batter to retire the side. The BJ batter says something to the pitcher, the ump jumps in and the benches start to clear and they jaw back and forth a bit. Never could tell what the problem was. Next inning, Jose Bautista Launched one over the left field wall and true to form, does the dramatic bat flip. They were down 8-3 at the time. The benches cleared again with mostly pointing and jawing. Love the relief pitcher's quote after the game.
“I’m surprised he’s ready to fight again after last year,†O’Flaherty told reporters, laughing, referring to Bautista getting punched by Rougned Odor of the Texas Rangers in 2016, a skirmish that all stemmed from Bautista’s 2015 flip heard round the world. Bautista, to his credit, admitted that the flip after Wednesday’s homer “was definitely not something that was fitting for the moment."

You left out the most important part. Freeman was hit on the hand. Broken bones. Out ten weeks!
-
The Blow Jays hit 7 batters in the series and put Freeman (Leading the Majors in HR's) out for 10 weeks. Pillar was suspended for 2 games for calling the Braves reliever a faggot and Bautista flipped his bat like a punk ass bitch. Braves won 3 of 4 but basically walked away with the season over.
Here come the Nationals.

Well, it is San Diego, the A's and Phillies...take a look at their records and tell me if it was some good feat. But, it got them a little momentum maybe for a tough stretch in Toronto, Detroit and somewhere else I can't remember. If they win 3 of the next 6 I will be surprised...

The Freddie-less Braves take game 1 from the Nationals with a great 8th inning, 7-4. Thanks Orioles for Markakis. Solid ass player entering his 3rd season with the Bravos. Texas makes it 10 in a row with a 5-3 win over Detroit to kick off a 9 game road trip.
Cubbies take it on the chin from the Brew Crew, the second hottest team in MLB behind the Rangers. Cards give up a 9th inning lead as SF scores 2 in the top of the 9th. I think the game is still going.
-
Braves get Matt Adams from the Cards for cash and minor leaguer Juan Yepez.
So, Snags, the skinny on Adams... He's a first baseman, that honestly should hit for a lot more power than he does. He dropped 30 pounds before the season started, but just couldn't get a crack to be the everyday first baseman. We tried him in LF, but he's just not an OF. I'm glad he will get a shot to be in the lineup everyday.
With Piscotti coming back from the DL, we didn't have space for him (with him, STL has 7 infielders on the 25 man roster), and I wish him nothing but the best.

Thanks for the info. Been out of town and just now seeing this. I'm good with them making this move to try and fill the void Freeman will leave until at least August. SunTrust seems to be a very hitter friendly park so maybe that will be the change of scenery Adams needs.
-
I love this team. I've watched more Braves baseball already this season than the last 3-4 years combined. And they're 19-23. Second place in the ultra-shitty NL East. But I'll take it. Best player, Freddie Freeman gone, but they continue to battle. Ender Inciarte goes 5-5 tonight. My newest favorite Brave, Brandon Phillips, had a hell of a night, including his 200th HR of his career. And Jarhead's loaner, Matt Adams, got his first 2 hits as a Brave, which included a homer in a 5-2 win.
For those who may be watching or don't give a shit, Brandon Phillips is what it's all about. Having fun, smiling and having some of the most "professional" at-bats you've ever seen. Love this guy!
-
And, he steals quotes from Buzz...
I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals.
All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em.

Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals.

Posey, he did want none. Apparently the pitcher had been holding on to some bad blood for about 3 years.

What more do you want from your catcher? I mean, he actually started heading to the mound after the first punch was thrown. He almost tried to fight his way through the crowd too. That's a team player!

I saw the interview with Posey afterward. He didn't even try to hide it. "Yeah, there were some big boys going at it out there."
I heard a great idea this morning. If you want to cut down on the fights, handle it like the NHL. Everyone stay out of it and let the 2 guys fighting duke it out until they go to the ground and then jump in and separate it. In hockey, they don't care because everyone's padded up like football. In baseball, not so much.
-
Seriously. How do you fuck up throwing a helmet at someone 10 feet away?

This kind of reminds me of what I intended it to look like at x gate if Chizzy would have shown up and thrown inside on me. If he were to get drunk enough and brave enough to show up, whoever is playing catcher, don't hold me back bro.
-

You know, I've been pretty realistic about my Bravos for this season. I thought with half decent pitching and a fairly decent starting line up, they could probably go .500 with a bright future. No bigee. Competitive. Fun to watch.
But holy haysus and Christ on a cracker, why the hell did they sign Bartolo Colon? Go back through the posts. I railed against it. Why??? Why would the Braves or anyone sign this guy. He's 44 (FORTY FOUR). He's 5' 11" 285. He's horrible. Now, going into tonight's game against the Angels, he's 2-5 with a 6.96 ERA. Pujolz just took him deep for a 3 run homer to go up 3-2 in the 3rd. Fucking really?
He's 44. We signed him.

Disagree. Very little separation between top and bottom. I think that division is a group of solid teams. Nobody has decided to step up yet or maybe, just haven't put it together. Could make for a crazy good season in the Central. Fun to watch!
You guys stopped the bleeding tonight with a win over a very talented and hot team. Martinez was damn good tonight and he's got an ERA right at 3.00.
-
Lots of issues with the Cards. Can't hit for shit, and on the off chance that they do get a hit, they usually have a baserunning gaffe. Add to the fact that Matheny can't figure out how to use a bullpen, and you have a starting pitching staff that is one of the best in the NL, but a .500 record.
-
Cubs on a 6 game losing streak and 3-7 last 10. Now that they are below .500, maybe they can get their shit together.
As of now, I'm calling a Nationals/Yankees WS.
-
Yesterday, the Cards beat the Dodgers 2-0. Wainwright (thanks, Atlanta) went 6 IP, and lowering his ERA over his last 4 starts to .03. Also, he hit a 2 run HR. It was the first time in Cardinal history that the Cards won a shutout, where all RBI were accounted for by the pitcher hitting a home run.
Cards next head to the friendly confines...

Werd. My Bravos went into the 9th with a 2-0 lead and their closer on the mound. We're now 8 games under .500. Fuck

Double fucks.
Maybe the Braves can hire Matheny.

According to Stats LLC, Cardinals "lead" majors with 45 runners lost on bases via unforced errors.
Fundamentally, they are fucking horrible.

If being swept by the Cubs means Auburn wins tomorrow, #FlyTheW.

Matt Adams saved our bacon today. A grand salami and the game winning solo homer in extra innings for the win. Hasn't been hitting for a very good average but the production has definitely been there.

Ok, BKGs, I take it back.. You make this happen, and it's all good.
Writing for ESPN.com, Craig Edwards joined the list of experts promoting a Josh Donaldson-to-the-Cardinals trade:
The American League East is very crowded right now, but if Josh Donaldson were to become available, that's where the Cardinals need to go, even if it means giving up a big part of the farm system. Donaldson is under team control for 2018, so he isn't a pure rental. Manny Machado might be a better fit, as he probably plays a better shortstop than Aledmys Diaz, and that is a move that would increase the versatility of the St. Louis roster. However, the Orioles are less likely to sell under the current regime than the Blue Jays are with Donaldson.
Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro did not shy away from trades from the big league roster to get more for the future while he was with Cleveland, netting Michael Brantley for CC Sabathia and Carlos Carrassco for Cliff Lee. He reportedly made comments when he took the job about giving away too many prospects, so he might be interested in moving Donaldson if the return is right. The Cardinals' farm system might rank closer to the middle of the pack, but they have a lot of depth and could meet the Blue Jays' asking price. St. Louis has a high floor due to a spread of good players across the diamond, but the Cardinals need to increase their ceiling if they want to be on the same talent level as the defending champion Cubs. If Donaldson becomes available, trading for him is a move the Cardinals need to make.
-
I've wanted Donaldson in a Braves uni for years. But then, who wouldn't? I assume he's been injured because it looks like he's only played in a handful of games so far. But, the 2-3 previous years, dude has put up sick numbers.

Update. The Cards and Cubs are right there within a couple of games of the Brewers. Everybody hovering around the .500 mark. Still early and you know that both clubs are infinitely better than the Beer Makers in the long run.
In the AL, freakin' NY is knocking the cover off the ball and leading the division. But my fav AL team, the Red Sox, are playing great and keeping pace. The Twins? Really? No love for that division. But Houston...damn...Houston is 22 games over .500 and running away with it at this point. Closest team is Tejas at 11 games back.
My Braves. What can you say? 7 games under .500 but have just taken 2 of 3 from the best team in the NL on their home field. In the process, they've scored 11...5 and 13 runs. If management had gone out and spent the millions they did on a couple of half way decent starting pitchers as opposed to 69 year old, 385 pound Bartolo Colon and 145 year old Y.M. Dickey, this team could be 7 games over .500.
They have 5 guys in the starting line up batting .290 or better. 3 guys over .300. Oh well. But I have damn sure had a great time watching them.

SO. The GA state championship in 7A baseball was played the day before graduation. This year it was between Etowah High and Woodstock High.
What's the big deal you say? Well these two schools are less than a mile from each other. My daughter just graduated from Etowah. East Cobb baseball is right around the corner and Perfect game complex is 15 miles north of us. SO the talent here is pretty good. Markakis came form Woodstock high and has so far been the only name in a while from this area to get drafted. That changed in the recent draft. Etowah had a kid go at number 41.
He was drafted by the hometown Braves. Maybe we'll see him in the league one day. It's rare you get to watch a kid in high school that is good enough to go that high.
Keep up with him, his name is Drew Waters:

Not so sure I'd put the Cards in the same category as the Cubs. Major shakeups this past week, with the GM firing the 3rd Base Coach, and reassigning the assistant hitting coach (yes, the GM did this, not the manager). GM told the local paper that if things don't turn around in 4 weeks, the Cards will be in a strange position at the trade deadline... that of being sellers. I don't think they will win 75 games this year.

The Braves...still 7 games under .500...win 8-7 in walk-off fashion tonight against the Fish. Jarhead, definite props for Matt Adams. Seems to be thriving now, getting his chance while Freeman is on the DL. 10 homers and he had 4 RBI's today alone. Never paid much attention to him before but watching him now, he has a seriously smooth, powerful swing. Matt Kemp is out with a barking hammy so Adams more than filled in for the lack of power.
-
Bravos going to 5 games under .500 as they're up 9-0 in the 9th. Matt Adams continuing to pay dividends. Another HR and multiple RBI's. 136 year old S.U. Dickey finally threw a good game tonight.
Come on people. Give me some bitchin' and moanin'. It's a long season but you've still got to bring it. My team is 9 games out of first and 5 games under .500 but they can be seriously fun to watch. Come on Cubbies, Cards, Rangers and Orioles. Where you at?

Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Mike Matheny, our manager, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Cardinal Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?

Alright damn it. We're doing our part in taking down the front running Brewers. Took the first 2 of the series with Brandon Freeman taking one deep for the difference.
The Cubs are a 1/2 game out. Jar...get your freakin' Cards in gear. I want to see a down to the wire Cubs/Cards race. My Bravos are now just 2 games under .500 and STILL 9 games out. I just want to see them play .500 ball this season and I'll be sassified.
AU1, what the frickity fickity fruck is up with your Orioles? I saw a stat that today was the first time in 20 games that they didn't allow at least 5 runs. I haven't paid attention to them. Injuries? What's the deal there, Jerry Seinfeld?
-
ar...get your freakin' Cards in gear.
They are like the fucking Bad News Bears.
If starting pitching does well, bats go hidden, or the bullpen blows it. If starting pitching is in the shitter, the bats score 4 or 5, but it doesn't matter, because we have had one starter turn in back to back quality starts over the past 2 or 3 weeks (and he has lost several 2-1, or 3-2 decisions).
Randal Grichuk is getting called up today. I think the Cards are hoping he gets hot, so they can trade him. I expect him and Trevor Rosenthal (more like Blowsenthal) will be the first two gone. I would put the only safe Cardinals as Molina, Martinez, and Fowler (Poscotty and Wong, also, but only because they signed 5 year deals in the off season, and I don't think anyone would want 5 years of shitty baseball from a Left Fielder or Second baseman). I love Waino, but it's time for him to move to the pen. Everyone else, I would consider for something. Even Matt Carpenter. I think you could get something really good for him.

Wainright is 35. $19.5 mil salary. The Cards might be better served to trade him to a contender so they could get a year or two from a "been there, done that" pitcher. Looked at his bio. Dude is 6'7". Daayyuummm!!!
Grichuk is a good looking prospect. Only 25 and has some good experience. 3 years in the show with 48 HR's. The kind of guy that could explode.
On another note, my boys got beyotch slapped 7-0 by the Brew Crew today.

No team is going to pick up a 35 year old pitcher for 19.5 this year and next, especially when they are 7-5 with a 5+ era.

If he were a FA at the end of this season, I'd agree with you, but unless the Cards throw in a ton of cash, I'm not sure a team would want him.

A team will do a lot if they think their window for a championship is closing...
-
Right now, it certainly looks like there are a few teams that are head AND shoulders above the rest of the bunch. Hell, the Dodgers are on a 10 game winning streak. Then there is the Astros, ASTRO of all teams, stroking it. I am curious to see though who is still hitting on all cylinders at the end of August. It's pretty well known that the Cubs will be hitting it hard for some additional pitching before the trade deadline and to be honest, that's all they really need. They seem to have hitters coming out from there arses.

Hey Miguel, I get what you're saying but you don't think it's got anything to do with the highlighted part? Buh-bye!!! ESPN
WASHINGTON -- The Chicago Cubs will designate catcher Miguel Montero for assignment, according to a source familiar with the situation, one day after he publicly called out starter Jake Arrieta for seven stolen bases off them by the Washington Nationals in a 6-1 loss Tuesday night.
"That's the reason they were running left and right today because they (Arrieta) were slow to the plate," Montero said after the game. "Simple as that. It's a shame it's my fault because I didn't throw anyone out.
Miguel Montero is 0 for 31 throwing out would-be base stealers this season.
"It really sucked because the stolen bases go on me but when you really look at it the pitcher doesn't give me any time so yeah, 'Miggy can't throw anyone out' but my pitchers don't hold anyone on."
It's not the first time Montero, 33, has spoken out. On the day of the Cubs' parade to celebrate their World Series championship last season, he was critical of how manager Joe Maddon used him throughout the year while also questioning communication between the two. A spring training dinner cleared the air but apparently Tuesday was the last straw. After hearing his comments Tuesday, teammate Anthony Rizzo fired back at Montero.
Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo reacts to catcher Miguel Montero's locker-room rant, during which he blamed Jake Arrieta's slow delivery for the Nationals' seven stolen bases.
"We win as a team we lose as a team," Rizzo said during his weekly appearance on ESPN 1000. "If you start pointing fingers that just labels you as a selfish player. I disagree. We have another catcher (Willson Contreras) who throws out everyone who steals and he (catches) Jon Lester who doesn't pick over. It's no secret. Going to the media with things like that, I don't think it's very professional."
The Cubs are calling up Triple-A catcher Victor Caratini to take his place, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.
-
It's pretty well known that the Cubs will be hitting it hard for some additional pitching before the trade deadline and to be honest, that's all they really need. They seem to have hitters coming out from there arses.
Chicago is currently:
14/15 in team BA.
6/15 in team HR.
9/15 in team RBI.
8/15 in team OBP.
10/15 in team SLG.
3/15 in Team ERA
3/15 in Team BAA
I wouldn't say they are fine with batting, and need pitching, I'd say the exact opposite.
-
If the Braves had some hitters and their pitching was better, especially with the starters, middle relievers and closers, and if they played much better defense, they'd be better.

Woo-Hoo!!!! :pb: :taz: :dance2:
A blurb from the Braves Official Website.
Colon, the oldest active major leaguer at 44, was 2-8 with an 8.14 ERA in 13 starts for the Braves after signing a one-year, $12.5 million free-agent contract in November.
They let his lard ass go. They were down 6-0 last night quicker than you can work up a good fart after a Burrito Supreme. I didn't understand the move to sign him and waste all that money right from the start. I would have been much happier with them bringing one of their young pitchers along.

Facts. PFffffft....
I was still against signing him for the simple fact that he's 44 and they are giving $12.5 large to his large ass. I'll admit I thought he might give them a solid season because of his experience. But, management tore the team down to the core in order to rebuild through their farm system and with younger players through trades. So, they promptly go out and spend this kind of money on 2 pitchers well into their 40's. Dickey, I can sort of understand because he throws teh knuckles and you can do that shit at 60.
-
Snags, I get you. Just stating that I sorta get why they sign a veteran who was an All Star last year. I wouldn't have done it, but I understand.
-
1 game from the All-Star break. The AL is tight in the East and Central with the Red Sox holding a 3.5 game lead over the Yankme's and the Indians with a 2.5 game lead over the Royals and Twinkies. The Astros, who strolled into the Braves back yard and took their lunch money in 2 straight, lead the division by 16 freakin' games. Seriously? 16 games at the All-Star break?
In the NL, the Dodgers have the same 59-29 record as the Astros in the best division in baseball. The D'backs are 53-34 and the Rockies are 51-38 and are 8.5 out. The most interesting race in MLB is the NL Central. The Brew Crew sits at 49-41. The Cubbies are 43-44 while the Cards are in 3rd with a 42-45 slate and 5.5 games back. This one will go down to the wire. Book it.
My Bravos have no chance to win the division. Never thought they would. As I've said numerous times, my best case scenario is a .500 season. The Nats are the class of the NL East and hold a 51-36 record. The Braves are in 2nd with a 42-44 record. They're currently 2-1 against Washington on the last series before the break and beat that Nat ass 13-0 today. I'm telling you, this team is fun to watch. Blew a 4-1 lead in the 9th last night. And thank you again to Jarhead for Matt Adams. 288 average with 14 HR and 42 RBI.
Second half of the season, I'll be watching 3 things. Will the Red Sox (My long since adopted AL team) hold on for a division title? Can my Braves reach .500 this year? And the NL Central....Brewers, Cubs and Cards. Good stuff!
-
Unless my Cubbies make some bold moves, they will not be in the playoffs this season. Not sure what happened, but damn, the current starters should have Chico's Bail Bonds on the backs of their uniforms.
-

The thing that sucks is that we're both so buried in the Wild Card (7.5 down at the break), so if either of our teams are going to go to the playoffs, we're going to need to win the division. Snags, Atlanta is right there with STL/CHI, only 8 down in the WC, but I don't see any of these three teams jumping Colorado or Arizona.
And I think Cubs or more capable of winning the division, honestly.
I think the new GM for St Louis will unload Lynn and Oh (both free agents at the end of the year) and possible Rosenthal and Wacha (both FA after next season). Jerkstore is another one that might be dealt, although he's under control through 2020.

The AssThrows hung 16 and 10 on the Braves. Then they ended the first half by putting up 19 against Toronto. Jeez Louise!

Braves score 2 in the bottom of the 8th and Jim Johnson puts Arizona down 1-2-3 for a win to start the second half. Inciarte made one hell of a catch in the 9th, jumping at the wall, to help Johnson get the save. The last 3 series have been the Astros (Hottest team in MLB), the Nationals (Best hitting team in the NL) and now the D'backs, who are now 53-37 and right in the thick of the Wildcard race. Not the best recipe for getting to .500. But, they're holding their own.
The Cubbies are clinging to an 8-6 lead on the Orioles in the 7th. They need a hot start to get back in the race. Cards got a solid start from Leake and most of the bullpen, but Oooohhh...lost to the Bucco's 5-2. Damn Jar, I can't recall the last time the Cards have been in this situation. I've said it many times. Best overall franchise in all of sports. Weird to me to see them struggle. I keep thinking you'll look up and quietly they've gone 24-6 and suddenly in control. The always do.
Oh well, we'll see. I'm more into this season than any in the last 10-15. Love it.
-
Life is unfair. Take a look at this stretch of games the Braves have been playing and are facing. 2 against the Astros. 4 vs. The Nationals. 3 against the Diamondbacks. Now 3 vs. The Cubs. Then 4 in L.A. against the Dodgers. Then finish it off with 3 more on the road against the D'backs. Just when we get back to .500. Frick!!!
-
Snags, look at bright side, you'll know before trade deadline if you will be buyers vs sellers. Go 6-4 on this road trip, you will be in WC contention, then maybe you make a few desks. Go 3-7, you deal Garcia and get some prospects.
-

Troof. You speak it.
Came to Atlanta this past weekend (and going home tomorrow), but watched the Braves on TV the past few days, and Garcia was dealing yesterday. That can only help his trade value. If you're contending, you keep him, and then when he signs somewhere else, you get a draft pick for him. Otherwise, you deal him for a prospect or two before the deadline. Either way, he won't be in a Braves uniform next year, but you'll have some younger players.
-
Well, Snaggs...it's a battle of the second half unbeatens in the ATL starting tonight. I predict an Atlanta sweep.

Jar, I think your evaluation of Jaime Garcia just got legs. The Braves hit the .500 mark at the All Star break. They promptly get swept by the steroid injected Cubs. Go to Los Angeles to face the hottest team (by far) in baseball in the Dodgers. Win game 1, 6-3. They're up 9-0 in the 5th after Garcia hits a grand salami off the best pitcher, numbers-wise, in the NL, Alex Woods.
Braves going nowhere. Could lose a 9-0 lead. But Garcia is taking his trade stock to a new level.
-
Cards drop 2 of 3 against the Cubs, and are now in 4th place in the division.
They did a lot of strange stuff this series, in that they called up Carson Kelley from Memphis. Kelley is the Cards #1 minor league prospect, but he's a catcher, and that's a tough position to break into the bigs when Molina is there (and especially when Molina signs an extension keeping him here through 2021). They had him start on Friday, and take some pinch hits Saturday and Sunday. Speculation is that some other teams wanted to scout him.

Very entertaining series sans one inning.

My opinion is price would be WAY too high. Doubt he gets dealt for anything less than top notch talent. Unless of course the Rangers feel that they aren't going to sign Darvish in the off-season. Or I guess if the KNOW they will sign him in the off-season regardless. Either way, it's a huge gamble.

Agreed.
I think I said this on here at the beginning of the season...I know I did somewhere anyway. The Cubs are a true leadoff man away from having a team that could contend for the WS. Now that they have Quintana and hopefully Hendricks comes back strong off the DL, they really don't need another starter.

True. Also, from what I understand from the talking heads, wouldn't Darvish be just basically a rental for the remainder of the season? That wouldn't make sense to trade gold for silver. The only way I see Darvish comes to the Cubs if if Darvish signs some sort of deal that has him in Chicago for a couple years.

Just traded away their last top 100 prospect to get Quintana. The farm has been reaped.

They still have a good bit of talent from what my little pee wee brain understands. Regardless, it wouldn't make much sense at all to trade for rental. The one thing I believe the Cubs are looking at is what will be their pitching situation next year. Still though, I don't see Darvish to the Cubs happening, imo.

Well, I guess there's only one thing left to do.

I could go with that, or just take a straight up trade of Mike Matheny for Joe Maddon.

Braves trade Garcia and Recker and $$$ to Twins, receive prospect Ynoa.

And Ynoa is 19 years old.

I usually hate when these things are made public, but if it will lead to Matheny being canned, I'm all for it.
When Cubs fans are disappointed that he may get fired, that tells you something. Like when we wanted Shula to be extended.
But, there is a legit issue. The number 1 catching prospect in baseball is Carson Kelly, so what do you do with him? He'd been down in AAA so he could play everyday. With Waino going to the DL, they called up Weaver to take his spot in the rotation and called up Kelly to catch him. So Molina now gets every 5th day off.
-

I'm not seeing the issue. Kelly gets to catch ML pitching every 5th day, but you know he'll get to face it in the batter's box just about every night as a pinch hitter. He's already caught what, 70-80 games in AAA? I imagine that's not what he needs. It's plate appearances.
-
Vs Arizona, Kelly didn't get an AB on Sunday, he got one on Saturday (in a 7-1 loss, he came in for Molina late in the game), didn't get one on Friday. Started on Thursday, and was 0-2. So for the weekend, he was 0-3 in 3 plate appearances. Greg Garcia, however, got three PH chances - but also started game 1.
Now, Snags, I agree with you, he needs PA... but if you aren't going to give them to him, why have him up here?
Any predictions for moves today?
-
Looks like the Cubs continue to be all about pitching. After getting Quintana from White Sox, they pick up Justin Wilson and Alex Avila from Detroit. Now it seems the Cubs have entered into the Sonny Gray discussion.

If Mike Matheny Loses Yadier Molina’s Loyalty, the Manager Is In Danger of Losing the Clubhouse
By Bernie Miklasz
In the hashing out of right and wrong, and rushing to choose sides, many bird watchers missed the most significant point to be pulled from the Yadier Molina vs. Mike Matheny controversy.
Even though Molina was wrong and Matheny was right in last week’s kerfuffle over Matheny’s decision to start rookie catcher Carson Kelly in Thursday’s game against Arizona, it wasn’t a good look for Matheny to be called out and ambushed on social media by the Cardinals’ most senior player, established leader and venerated clubhouse presence.
Molina’s unjustified tantrum displayed a complete lack of respect for Matheny. I don’t care about Friday’s unified attempt to con fans and media by smoothing and spinning the startling unpleasantness between player and manager.
I think it’s alarming that Molina thought it was OK to publicly go after a manager who has been devotedly and unwaveringly loyal to the eight-time All-Star and eight-time gold glove winner.
It was even more disturbing that Molina chose to vent his anger on a social-media platform instead of having a private and frank discussion with Matheny.
What does this tell us?
A lot, unfortunately.
And none of it is good.
That’s my initial reaction.
You have to understand the way Matheny works to foster loyalty in the clubhouse. And yes, I’ve written and talked about this many times in the past. The insecure Matheny leans on veteran leaders to set the tone, and to keep other players in line.
Since taking over as a rookie manager (at any professional level) in 2012, Matheny’s go-to guys have been left fielder Matt Holliday, pitcher Adam Wainwright and Molina.
As part of the unspoken deal, Matheny always has the veterans’ backs.
And in return, they’ve have his back.
Others on the team took note of the special treatment and double standards, but that didn’t change Matheny’s strategy on player relations.
If Holliday didn’t want to shag fly balls during batting practice, he didn’t shag balls during batting practice. Matheny wasn’t going to order him to do it. If Matheny didn’t have Molina in the lineup for a planned day of rest, Molina easily persuaded Matheny to rewrite that lineup after insisting that he felt fine and wanted to play.
Matheny has almost always allowed Molina to call the shots on playing time. Because of that, Molina has actually caught more innings (on a percentage basis) under Matheny than he caught with Tony La Russa as manager. That, despite Molina’s increasing age and punishment on his body.
The congenial Wainwright makes no demands, but Matheny has always counted on Waino to reinforce the manager’s messages to pitchers. When Matheny wanted a younger Carlos Martinez to reduce the flair and flamboyance, Wainwright was the team elder who patiently pulled Martinez aside for quiet talks about professionalism.
Matheny lost an important deputy when Cardinals management declined to exercise Holliday’s contract option for 2017. Holliday has taken on a leadership role in his first season with the Yankees. Wainwright is a terrific leader of the pitching staff. Molina isn’t a speech-making guy; he is the classic example of a player who (pardon the cliche) leads by example. Fans and media are suckers for the Herb Brooks stuff, but action is more effective than the rah-rah.
But what kind of example does it set for the other Cardinals — especially the young players that have arrived from Triple A Memphis this season — to see one of the greatest players in franchise history troll the manager on Instagram?
That’s crossing a line. And if Molina can do it, then it makes it easier for teammates to air their criticism of the manager … not necessarily in public, but among themselves. And internal negativity can be just as corrosive and damaging.
I see no reason to gloss over this. When Molina rips his manager in a public forum as the first option for communication, that tells me there’s a problem. It also leads me to believe that at least some of this players’ frustration with Matheny has been bubbling under the surface; Molina opened the steam valve.
It was a lousy thing for Molina to do to a manager (and an organization) that have treated the cherished catcher with unconditional respect. Respect, by the way, that Molina very much deserves. But what’s the limit on this? A manager isn’t allowed to tell reporters why he’s resting Molina?
After all:
— Molina was handed a three-year $60 million contract extension on opening day by a team that has a legitimately good catching prospect in place, Carson Kelly. And the Cardinals conveyed their loyalty and commitment to Molina in dollars, in effect choosing to reward Molina over expediting the inevitable transition to Kelly. And the team recommitted to Molina even though Yadier, 35, is well into his decline phase. Don’t get me wrong here; Molina remains a valuable asset for his defense, pitch selection, and guidance of pitchers.
No player remains elite forever. No player ever defeats age. Molina included. Molina has only 1.0 WAR this season which ranks tied for 18th among catchers with at least 200 plate appearances. His wRC+ of 81 is 19 percent below league averaged offensive. Molina has improved his throw-out rate in catching stealers. Thieves got the best of Molina and Cardinals pitchers for a steal success rate of 79.8 percent in 2016. This year, the stolen-base rate against Molina is 70 percent. But that’s still above his career rate of allowing 62 percent of runners to steal.
— As mentioned earlier, Molina is the boss of his own playing time, with Matheny almost always capitulating to Molina’s wishes. And maybe that’s part of the problem; Molina is so used to getting his way on these lineup decisions that he believes it’s his inalienable right to play as much as he wants. With Matheny as manager, Molina has been accorded the kind of unfettered respect that few MLB players can equal. No one in the majors — even now — catches more than Molina. Once again he leads big-league catchers in games started and innings caught in 2017. Molina is on a pace to start 135 games, which would be his second-highest work load in a season since 2009. Last season Molina set a personal career high with 142 games started.
OK, so Matheny believed Molina was a little beat up and moving slower than usual and decided it was prudent to start Kelly last Thursday. So what? This ain’t a case for Amnesty International. If Molina already is erupting over a perceived slight — Kelly has been here for what, 11 minutes? — this doesn’t bode well for the future. This will be an uncomfortable situation. The Cardinals certainly had to realize this before extending their relationship with Molina. They’d better figure out a way to handle this sensitive and potentially explosive catching co-existence so all parties can move forward in relative peace. This team has enough issues to deal with without having to endure frequent disruptions over playing time at catcher between now and the end of the 2020 season.
— Matheny continues to bat Molina 5th, which is ridiculous. That’s a sure sign of respect … yeah, misplaced respect. Molina’s wRC+ as a 5th place hitter is well below industry average. Only three MLB hitters have more plate appearances in the No. 5 hole than Molina this season; he ranks 33rd among 42 “five†hitters with an 86 wRC+ (minimum 100 PA.) Molina’s .723 OPS in the five slot ranks 34th. His ISO (isolated power) is 37th. And consider this: only two No. 5 hitters in the majors have left more runners on base than Molina (103) this season. With his 2016 hitting performance looking more and more like an outlier, Molina has reverted to 2015 range. His current wRC+ is a point above his 80 wRC+ 80 in ’15.
I’ll absolutely defend Matheny on this: he said nothing wrong. He did nothing that was even remotely improper. The Beloved Leader of Men did what he thought was best for Molina and the team by resting Yadi for a late-July game. Gee, what an atrocity. I don’t care about Matheny’s choice of words. He could have said Molina was tired, or banged up, or sore, or running a little low in the fuel tank.
Whatever. It all means the same thing. Matheny, the old catcher, believed that his catcher needed a breather. This is EXACTLY what a manager is supposed to do. I have no idea why Matheny back-tracked on Friday by playing word games — protesting that he never said Molina was “tired.†C’mon, Mike. You sat Molina. It doesn’t matter how you chose to describe it.
This is silly. Are you really so afraid of offending your catcher?
Molina’s snipe at Matheny was unwarranted.
It was interesting to see that five of Molina’s teammates — Dexter Fowler, Kolten Wong, Tommy Pham, Greg Garcia and Kevin Siegrist — “liked†Molina’s controversial post on Instagram.
If Matheny loses Molina’s loyalty, he’s in real danger of losing the clubhouse.
Thanks for reading …
–Bernie

Put the issue of whether Matheny has been teh suxxors as a manager aside. He has every right to make the decision to rest his 35 year old catcher every now and then. Toughest, most physical position on the field by a long shot. Are there teams that don't do that? Asking seriously because it seems to me that from what I've seen, most teams will rotate in the back up to give the #1 a day off.
Two problems I see here. First, as the author said, you don't blast your manager on social media. You go to him like a man and address whatever you see as a problem. Second, and I'm assuming this was the case, it looks like Matheny made the decision without talking to Molina. Not that Yadi had to approve it. But it just seems like common sense to bring him in and say, "Look, I think we need to start giving you a day off now and then to keep you fresh and help you recover." If that happens, no one is talking about this.
-
On Bravo trades, maybe closer Jim Johnson at the last minute. I was thinking they'd likely deal Matt Kemp, especially now that they've plummeted after reaching .500. But I believe Kemp is out with a hammy so I doubt anyone will jump on him. He seems to be injury prone.

I liked it better when Colon pitched for the Braves. It made the bitching much better. We need a twins fan to join the board.

Or a Browns or Jets fan. But that would be permanent.

It wasn't blockbuster craziness, but I think L.A. and the Yank Me's took a big step forward in pitching. The Dodgers got Yu Darvish while the Bronx Bombers got Sonny Gray from Oakland. NY is still playing catch up to the Sox, who really needed some power in the line up. They didn't get it but got a really nice utility infielder in Eduardo Nunez and bullpen help in Addison Reed from the Mets.
The Sox are my AL team that I started pulling for just to be the antithesis of the Steinbrenner Yankees years ago. Always had that loveable Cubs, we'll never win one feel. Have just hung with them so I could have an AL team to get behind. Anyway, it looks like they're standing pat I think they make the post season, but the addition of Gray and the power NY has, may put them in the wild card.
Now to L.A. I saw the stat that Hugh has against the NL in Interleague play. Not impressive. Don't care. I think this move put the Dodgers in the WS. The only real (perceived) competition is the Nats and their bullpen would never survive a 7 game series. They have no chance against several NL teams. The question now is how hot can the Cubs be, now back on track, come late September?
-
I really don't see anyone stopping the Dodgers at this point. They already looked unbeatable in a 5 or 7 game series, but now? Get the brooms out Dodger fans.

Funny how you guys have become strangely quiet. It's like if I don't say anything, maybe my team will keep doing mo bettah mo bettah. Okay, I'll say it.
Cubs are now 57-50 and 1.5 games up on the Brew Crew. Cards are just 2 games under .500 with 1/3 (Or 458/726th) of the season to go and just 4.5 back. The Buccos are also quietly 5.5 games back. I've been telling you this is going to be the division to watch down the stretch.
I feel for the D'backs and Rockies. They're both 15 or 16 games over .500 and 14 games back of the Dodgers. They'd be running away with the NL Central. But, probably a WC for one of them.

How did I miss Cleveland skyrocketing past the Astros?

Probably had something to do with that 20+ game winning streak.

Well, yeah.

AL, I hope it's either Tribe, Astros, or Twins.
NL, I guess I'll pull for the Rox/Dbacks or the Nats.
Scherzer with a pulled hammy, Buzz, this can't hurt your Cubs.
Snags, who you pulling for?
-
Curious, what would your favorite matchup out of these in the playoffs?
Ima go with Red Sox/Cubs.

I'd rather root for teams that haven't won it recently, if at all.
Funny that the Dbacks have won one more recently than the Dodgers though.

A Dodgers/Indians matchup would be interesting.

Dayton has to have Tommy John surgery, so no Auburn guys in the playoffs this year.

I'm a Sox guy in the AL. I'll be pulling for them but if they don't make it, definitely the Stro's. I'd love to see a Stro's/Rattlesnakes match up.

Saw that earlier. Sounds like he may still be good to go 2 and 5. Sad face.

That sounds boring tho.

In case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven't, the Indians have managed to win a few here and there, and are threatening to climb out of the cellar.

I’d care execpt for LeBron’s monkey ass dick riding them.
I used to like lebron. Thought he was one of the rare few to live up to the hype. I’ve since gotten tired of his shit. Fuck Lebroni James and anything he supports.

Red Sox fire
Gus Malzahn John Farrell.
He won 93 games and the AL East this season. Won the World Series in 2013.

Stupid, very stupid move imo.

Cubs move on. 9-8 win over the Nats. Sooooo...damn glad to see Bryce Bitch Ass Harper make the last out and keep the Nats string of total futility with maybe the best roster in baseballs in tact. Good God, how irrelevant is any Washington franchise?
Now having said that, I had no dog in this fight. Was pulling for the Cubs just because I despise the Nats. But MLB has to immediately take steps. Almost 5 hour game. Pathetic!!! No excuse for a 5 hour game. Ever. Want to stop it? Here's one tip to stop that. Limit Wilson Contreras to 27 visits to the mound each inning. GAWT FUCKING DAMN!!! He should have been ejected in the 2nd inning. What is your problem??? You're 257 games in and you can't get the signs straight? You don't know the hitters?
BAN WILSON CONTRERAS FROM BASEBALL!!!
-
My daughter wandered through the room last night, glanced at the TV and said “who’s winning, the Cubs or the Walgreens?â€

Maybe I will. Maybe I won't. Let me walk out to the mound and have a meeting with my pitcher before I make that decision.

He's just being neighborly.

You know Tim, sometimes in life we come to a cross roads. We're not sure which road to take. When that happens, the only thing to do is walk to the mound, cover your mouth with your glove and talk with your pitcher. You follow me Tim?

Going to call a foul on both of you. No quoting of Home Improvement, and certainly no posting of pictures of Wilson, unless you include a Tool Time Girl.

I would agree. The Yanks apparently aren't too happy with ole Joe.

So three playoff teams will have new managers next year. I didn't think Girardi would last as long in NY as he did, having to replace Torre. And I thought the Yanks were a year or two away from really contending, and he got them to the ALCS.

The Cardinals need a new manager.

Also, Maddon is still manager but he pretty much replaced everyone around him. I don't think Girardi should have been canned. Bad move for the Yanks. I think the same could be said for the Red Sox as well.

Can we have a hurricane, please?
Hurricane smashes New Orleans, Saints win Super Bowl
Hurricane smashes Houston, Astroles win World Series.
-
Did not see that coming. I was pulling for the Stro's but said LA in 6.

Roy Halladay killed in a plane crash. Apparently, it was his own plane he had just purchased. An A5???
Sad news.
