Title: Putcher High School Foosballz Here
Post by: Snaggletiger on August 21, 2015, 10:37:02 AM
High school football started up fo realz last night with a bunch of games played around the State.  Most teams crank it up tonight with a few still having Jamborees.  I'm trying to decide between several local games tonight.  Going to pick up my boiled peanuts this afternoon and then head out to some Friday night lights.  Come home, grab a cocktail and watch the highlights at 10:30 on WTVY Friday Night Football.  Dizzam I love this time of year.

Football in this area has been down overall in recent years as far as talent goes.  Picked up a good bit last year with Elba winning it all in 2A and Dale County making it to JHS in 4A (Or was it 3A?)  The Dothan Eagle puts out a high school preview on all the area teams every year.  Dothan High should be decent again this year and I noticed their O-line averages 290. Sweet 10 1/2 pound baby Jesus.  (Hey, guys are getting bigger every year)

Anyone checking out your team tonight?  Prattville in the house?  K? Wiregrass Tiger?  What's it look like in Baldwin County?

Fairhope vs Robertsdale. Shouldn't be much to it but of course this is Carter's first game after leaving Auburn High and I'm hearing that most aren't expecting much with a new QB, so it could be a closer game than thought.

I think Foley and Spanish Fort both have new coaches if I'm not mistaken. Foley guy moved up to college as Director of Football for Troy. Spanish Fort new coach was a good hire, imo. He came from Gulf Shores, Ben Blackmon. Up and coming young guy. They will be good again in 5A, I assume.

I'll go to the F'hope and Robertsdale game tonight.

Cullman may not have their typical season, and may miss the playoffs for the first time in a long time.  I was talking to the HC last week and he is feeling the pressure, so if they don't make it, it might just be his last season to roam the sidelines.  They've got some decent skill guys but their line on both sides of the ball is really small.  Especially for a 6A team.

None of the Cullman County schools will make any noise this year (not much different from any other year), and may only have one or two of them make the playoffs.

I will be at Hayden tonight to officiate them against Susan Moore.  Hayden got Fultondales coach last year, so it will be interesting to see how he has them playing this year.

I'll go to the F'hope and Robertsdale game tonight.

Will be splitting time between Spanish Fort ( which did NOT make a great hire IMO and will take a few steps back in the coming years)  and the Daphne/Davidson game.

I hate Daphne's Bama bubba head coach but I got kid there. She likes her team even though she doesn't know a soul who plays.  I think every starter on both sides of the ball is black. Or was the last time I went.  Other than at TBHS I don't think I'd ever seen an all black OL.

Clay Chalkville headed up to Murfreesboro, TN to play Blackman. The Cougars go in ranked #18 in the country with much of the same offensive team as last years 6A champs team. I heard it is to be on ESPN. Also Hoover will be up there playing another TN team. Both games played at MTSU.

Meanwhile the scrappy bunch of 70 lbs Cougars will be playing tomorrow morning at 9am against the Pinson Valley Indians. This will not be on TV.

You may be right (which is really unusual) about them taking a step back at the Fort, I dunno. They are always loaded with talent though. Enough talent to compete with most any team at 6 and 7A as a 5A school, as you'll probably agree. How they've been able to attract and keep that talent is a little suspect but they've had it.

I just think Blackmon is a good guy. As I'm sure you know, his brother is coach at Opelika and I like him too.

Anywho, be glad to meet you at half of the Daphne Fairhope game and rumble if you like. I've been wanting to kick your ass for a long time. Bring your crew. I don't need one.

Fred Riley at Davidson was a GA under Dye at Auburn.

Still one of the keenest high school games I've ever been to was a game of The Woodlands High just outside of Houston.  Forget who they played but beat the poor schleps into submission.  They ran about 90 kids out there and the amazing thing was just about every one of them was a senior. They can do that with a senior class of well over 1,000 kids.

Central PC heads to Stockbridge GA to play.

Central is #2 in 7A in Al (behind Hoover). And top 50 nationally.

Stockbridge is top 10 in 5A in Georgia, and was a playoff semi finalist last year.

Underrated game. Both teams chockful of D1 talent. Auburn committment John Broussard (DB) plays for CHS.

I only say that because nothing can last forever.  The guy who left SF set himself up as a demi-God.  Hard legacy to follow.

In a way he's sort of a Gene Chizik hire.  Nice guy from all accounts, but underperformed at Gulf Shores.  They were like 21-20 and in four years and were 8-3 in one of those.  13-17 over three seasons.   4-6 last season. Only one playoff game, a loss, in four seasons.

Freeman (his predecessor) struggled at GS, too if  I remember right.  But he was (as I understand it) a major asshole.  This guy isn't.

As far as how they get talent?  Yeah.  Always questions about that.  There was a lot of pissed off people the way things were redrawn when the school was first started in terms of what kids were pulled from Daphne.  It was like they were setting up a private school.  Of course the same things were said about Daphne back when it split from Fairhope in the day.

Hate to disappoint you but I will not make the SF-Daphne game.  I'll be in Baton Rouge to see LSU and Florida.  Guest of a bayou bengal.

Headed out to the stadium and headed back to the crib.  Thunderstorms knocked out half the games in this area.  Stopped at Smokey Joe's on the way back in to get 10 honey barbecue wings and some cole slaw.  So the night was not a total loss.

Well the old home (PHS) team beat up on Carver in a preseason game. Real season starts this week against interstate rival Stanhope Elmore.

The local school here in Georgy (Etowah) beat the pants off Marietta 54-21. Not sure if Marietta is that bad or Etowah is that good. Time will tell.

Apparently 2 high school football players in Texas didn't like a call made by a ref during the game, so decided to take him out during a play.  If it is learned that the coaching staff was behind this, or even knew about it, I can see an insane punishment being handed down.  Should be an interesting story to follow.

Actually, this was just an unfortunate situation where the ref was in the line of fire.  See, the DB is really making a bee line for the running back and he had tunnel vision, thereby blocking the ref from his line of vision. I hate that he got trucked but it's all part of football.

Oh....and the second guy that it "looked like" finished him off with a bionic elbow from the top rope.....well, he clearly tripped while coming to the ref's aid.  Nothing to see here, move along.  I just hope neither of the two DB's were injured.

My cousin had a big night last night against JO Johnson.

Smith kicked off the second half of his senior season the same way he finished the first, going beast mode for touchdown totes of 83 and 96 yards and nearly adding another on a late 70-yard carry. He capped off the scoring drive shortly thereafter anyway, topping out at three scores and an eye-popping 362 rushing yards on 25 attempts.

Smith was especially impressive in the second half, needing just eight rushes to pile on 222 yards and two

Just a note on a sort of Wiregrass team.  We claim em' when they do good. When they suck, they're not in our area.  Pike County Bulldogs are 5-0.  Their scores so far:

53-0

57-0

53-0

44-0

59-0

Don't know much about the teams they've played except Barbour County, which does in fact, suck.  But either way....Helluva Wiregrass team.

Cullman/Hartselle had a slug fest tonight. Cullman decided to go for two late in the fourth instead of playing for OT, and didn't get it. Hartselle won 14-13. Those boys were knocking the hell out of each other.

And Im pretty sure the final score was the score at the end of 3. Opelika could have went triple digits. Their QB is a hoss. And his dad is one of Gus's "advisors" which is interesting. Kid is the #8 Pro Style QB for the c/o of 2017. (Jake Bentley)

Hoover Junior College goes down 20-13 to the Vestavia Hills Rebels!

Pell City drops to 3-5 on the year with a 17-16 loss at Chelsea. The Hornets kick a last second FG to pull out the win. It's the second game Pell City has lost this year on a final play of the game FG.

What I meant was lots of young guys playing. No need to risk hurting your starters when Cullman wasnt doing anything. Like I said, the game was over at halftime and Cullman was gassed. After that first TD early in the 1st, they did nothing else but struggle.

Side note: central has a sophomore wide receiver, Justyn Ross. He is already rated a high 4star by most. Seen the dude in action. Long, fast, great hands, goes up for the ball. Auburn needs this guy. He's considered the best wr on this team and that's with a sr wr who is committed to fsu (Jamal couch). 6'5  190. 6 friggin 5 at 16 years old. It would appear auburn has offered him.

We're losing our feat of strength challenge.

I was there.

Observations for you, PCT.

PC was well-prepared and well coached on defense.  They put up a really good fight, but...

The QB missed at least three wide-open receivers that would have gone for scores.  Overthrew all of them when they were running alone with nobody within ten yards.

Spanish Fort took advantage of a mismatch in the secondary.  A couple of long passes to Logan Morgan made the difference.  Every time he was matched up in single coverage against a kid he had five or six inches on. But tt wasn't like they blew PC off the field.  In fact, if the offense could have generated anything much at all, it was a game the Panthers could easily have won.

Whoever was calling the plays for Pell City had spells of idiocy.   At one point after an interception late in the game it was third or fourth and about 15 or so.  Only one receiver ran a route that was 15 yards or more.  There were only two in play at all.  One ran a five-yard out, the other a double move effort that was covered by three SF defenders.  No chance at all.  That wasn't the only dumb play call. I questioned about half of what they ran.  It just wasn't good and wasn't particularly well executed.

Pell City's band was absolutely fantastic.  Worth going to see no matter how the game turned out.  Their America tribute had a lot of people in the home stands in tears.

Spanish Fort's starting running back was arrested and charged with rape on Thursday.  Apparently had sex with a drunk and unconscious 16-year old girl at a Halloween party. Now being prosecuted. Was all over the news.   The players (and one would assume the coaches?) showed support for the player by holding up four fingers (his number) throughout the game.  I'm sure that went over well with the people who support the girl.  It's a very divisive thing down here.  Don't know if it affected the play at all, but I've seen SF a few times this year and they didn't have the typical energy last night that I've seen in other games.

Watched AU recruit Tre Threatt pretty closely. Remain unimpressed.  He made one big hit on a pass over the middle but didn't do much else.  He was also one of those snatching off his helmet and stalking around animatedly on the sidelines.  I didn't care for his demeanor at all. He's not that good and wasn't in any position to be acting pissed off when PC got a first down or something.

They need offensive help.  A better offensive strategy and that's a game they win.

SF was flat and there for the taking.  But I told my friend in the second quarter even when it was 3-0 SF, that there was no way PC could win.  Told her they couldn't get our of their own way on offense.  Couldn't sustain a drive. I knew they couldn't put enough points on the board.  They'd start to get a little momentum and then dud screen pass, throw long to nobody, throw long and either miss a wide open receiver or throw into double/triple coverage.  They've been to the Lashlee school of offensive playcalling.

They played really hard and did a good job on defense taking everything away but those big play receptions.

The first three, yes.

The last two, no.

Its bad enough we have to have a team from that state in the conference, but to have the SOUTH EAST conf championship in the midwest would be a travesty.

I don't know. Every year the turds are in it, they should move the game to St. Louis.

I'm tired of my damn relatives looking for a place to stay the night before the game.

Holy cow, I am super retarded, Clay will play the winner of Austin/Gardendale. The winner of Opelika/Spanish Fort will play the winner of Bessemer City/Benjamin Russel.

So, in AL 6A, it's Clay vs Austin and Benjamin Russell vs Spanish Fort.

Rummel beats Jesuit 44-14 in LA quarters, will face Curtis in LA Semis.  After waiting 50 years for this matchup, we get Curtis twice in one season.

THS, you went to Jesuit or BM, I forget.  Chad, you can jump on the Rummel bandwagon.

He's waiting for Bill Clark to come back and revive Prattville. So is AWK and CCT.

I keed above but surrrssly.....Central PC HC is Jamey Dubose who took over for Clark at Prattville after he left. The coach at McGill Toolen, Caleb Ross, was Dubose's OC at Prattville. Both coached against each other in the 7A Semi Final last Friday. That Bill Clark coaching tree is the shit.

2A semi-final match up of Wiregrass teams.  Elba vs. G.W. Long.  I think Elba has gone to the finals the last two years, winning one of them.  Only significant because Elba's QB, Ramsey Rigby, is going to walk on at AU despite getting other offers. The kid is having a kick ass year.

WTF is an Elba?

Elba (Italian: isola d'Elba, pronounced [ˈiːzola ˈdelba]; Latin: Ilva; Ancient Greek: Αἰθαλία, Aithalia) is a Mediterranean island in Tuscany, Italy, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from the coastal town of Piombino. The largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, Elba is also part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park,[2] and the third largest island in Italy, after Sicily and Sardinia. It is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 50 kilometres (30 mi) east of the French island of Corsica.

Some people need to be punched. In the face.

If coach had played me more in 1986, they would've been 4a state champs. Unfortunately, it was 3 degrees that night in Alexandria and WT wasn't a cold weather performer. So, iirc it was 35-6. But I got them to the first ever state championship game and they've been to many since then.

Watched SF play a few times this year.  The player to keep an eye on is the freshman kicker.  Tiny little kid, but he's nailing FGs from 40+ with room to spare.

Benjamin Russell blew a huge lead against Spanish Fort and lost 31-27.

Their quarterback Tyre Gray looked unstoppable for 18 minutes, but then things changed.  BR had an outstanding gameplan from the jump.  Opened up with four wide and threw long to loosen things up.  From there, Gray and the BR running backs ran the read option and gashed the fuck out of the Spanish Fort defense.  I saw some read, plays out of the wishbone, a little pistol, some four wide sets, some bunch sets. It kept SF off balance.

Russell went up by 7 and then 14 before Spanish Fort got on the board with a FG.  The visiting Wildcats followed with another TD to lead 21-3.  After Fort cut it to 21-10, BR chewed yards up again and took a 27-10 lead after a missed PAT.  The Cats got the ball back late in the first with a chance to bury Spanish Fort. After getting inside the 10, though, they blew it.  Couple of boneheaded play calls and a missed field goal gave Spanish Fort hope.  When they scored on the opening drive of the second half to close back to 27-17 you could see momentum change.

Biggest momentum change?  After SF closed to 27-17, BR drive fizzled. On third down Gray dropped back, had to scramble and nearly had his head taken off by an obvious facemask.  Spun him around and pulled his head nearly to the ground.  Three flags came flying.  He escaped the grab and came up about two yards short of the first down marker.  Head ref comes over and waves off the flag.  No foul.  Punt, Fort drives for a quick score and took control.

Russell ended up missing two field goals and a PAT.  Hitting any of the three would have made a difference.

My original intent, up until halftime was to ask if anybody had heard of Gray or if he was being recruited.  He played like Cam for most of the half. But then he played like Kiehl Frazier in the second.  Part of that was coaching.  He shredded SF in the first half but only carried the ball two or three times in the second.

McGill takes the 7a title last night.

Watched some of it. Personally I think the score (14-12) didn't match the actual game. Spain Park was struggling to make anything happen on offense. Pretty good defensive battle but McGill was clearly a better team all around.

McGill has probably the best D in the state. I think they gave up like 130 points in 13 games or something close to that. And their schedule wasnt full of cupcakes.

Clays kicking really put the Cougars in a bad spot multiple times; bad punts, missed field goals, etc. Coach Hood one time should have went for it 4th and goal at the 2  with like 7 min left in the 4th but instead went for the field goal and the kicker missed. SF didnt make too many mistakes. Great game though with intensity all the way through.

My son texted me this morning saying both QBs will the the Under Armour game starters.
