SPOKANE, Wash. – A northern Idaho police officer shot by a man who stole his patrol car died of his injuries Tuesday evening, police said.
Sgt. Greg Moore died at 5:50 p.m. local time at Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, police spokeswoman Sgt. Christie Wood said in a statement.
Moore was shot about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after checking on a suspicious person in a neighborhood, Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Lee White said.
Police arrested Jonathan Renfro, 26, after a car chase that reached speeds of 125 mph. The pursuit ended when a police dog dragged the man from his hiding place underneath a commercial truck.
Renfro appeared in court Tuesday afternoon and was charged with attempted murder, theft of a police vehicle, theft of an officer's gun and being a felon with a gun. Bail was set at $2 million. He was held in the Kootenai County, Idaho, jail.
Moore, a 16-year veteran of the Coeur d'Alene department, called dispatch to get information on Renfro, White said. Not long after, a resident called police.
The resident "had heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot and they shortly after said that there was a body lying in the street," White said at an early morning news conference.
"From the information I've received so far, it doesn't look like an ambush-style attack," the chief said. "This was just a bad guy doing bad guy stuff and our officers doing what they were trained to do -- and that's trying to keep our communities safe."
Renfro has a long criminal record and was on probation.
After Moore was shot, an officer from nearby Post Falls, Idaho, who was listening to radio traffic about the shooting, saw a Coeur d'Alene police car race by about 90 mph, so he gave chase close to the Washington state line, Post Falls Police Chief Scott Haug said.
The officer found the patrol car abandoned, and the Washington State Patrol and Kootenai County Sheriff's Office helped set up a perimeter, Haug said.
A police dog found Renfro about two hours later hiding under a tractor-trailer. He was wedged off the ground between the axle area and the truck, near a Wal-Mart in Post Falls, Haug said.
"He was engaged by the dog when he would not comply and taken into custody," Haug said.
White said a motive for the shooting hasn't been determined.
The Idaho State Police is the lead agency investigating the shooting, said Stu Miller, a spokesman for the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators are collecting evidence from multiple scenes, including dash cam video from Moore's car, Miller said.
Miller did not know if the weapon used against Moore had been recovered.
Miller said the last report from the officer was a radio message that he was checking out a suspicious person in a Coeur d'Alene neighborhood.
"There was no further contact from him," Miller said.
Moore was married and had two children, officials said.

So now, when faced with a shoot/don't shoot scenario, the average police officer now entertains a split second of hesitation that can cost him his life - whether he himself dies or not. Shoot and kill a "poor innocent black man who was a saint and about to turn his life around" and be ruined and prosecuted and hounded for the rest of his life, or don't shoot and be killed himself.

A 29-year-old police officer who had put off maternity leave after giving birth prematurely to a daughter in February was being mourned Thursday, a day after she was gunned down in a shootout with a fugitive.
Kerrie Orozco, the first female officer from Omaha's police department to die in the line of duty, had only recently given birth to a daughter, and also was stepmother to two children ages 6 and 7, according to authorities. She was pronounced dead at Creighton University Medical Center shortly after the 1 p.m. shooting, Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said at a hospital news conference. Schmaderer said the suspect, 26-year-old Marcus Wheeler, also died at the hospital.

Agreed re: the barbaric shields and helmets. I know that most of the times I've had to whip a cops ass, I was at a disadvantage by not having protective gear, yet I managed to overcome.
It was either make the cops stop dressing up like Roman soldiers or provide a subsidy for protesters to supply like equipment, IMO. It's high time the playing field is leveled.

Luckily for us all though, he's outfitting the federal officers with such gear to make it easier for the takeover for them to come in and help when necessary.

I hate the SOB, but technically not true. The latest stance involves doing away with the Fed Govt GIVING freebies to local municipalities. They can still have those things, they will just have to spring for them. Since most cities are pressed for cash (since pensions, disability and HUD depts are lead weights at the city/state level), this does essentially mean these things will be greatly reduced once the current equipment needs replacing.
Have you not learned yet, the FedGov picks and chooses who gets freebies? Sheesh.

I was looking to educate myself on how we (law enforcement) could do our job better as first responders to an active shooter situation. I came across these videos of the Aurora theater shooting in Colorado a couple of years ago. The first video is long, but very educational for first responders. Also it shows just how great of a job the police officers did that night. The second video is the police radio from that same event. Again you can hear how the officers sprang into action and did a job that most people do not/ would not want to do. The dispatchers working that night did a bang up job and as a law enforcement officer, you could not ask any more from your dispatch than what the dispatcher(s) did. My hat is off to all of them!!

The man shot and killed Tuesday by Boston police was plotting with another suspect to behead a cop, a law enforcement source told FoxNews.com
The dead suspect, 26-year-old Usaama Rahim, was under surveillance by the Joint Terrorism Task Force when he was shot at about 7 a.m. near a CVS in the city's Roslindale neighborhood, when he brandished the blade at police. Later Tuesday, authorities arrested another suspect, David Wright, in connection with the case, police said.
"We believe the intent was to behead a police officer," one official told The Boston Globe. "We knew the plot had to be stopped. They were planning to take action Tuesday."
Rahim was shot outside a CVS Pharmacy in Roslindale, Mass. at approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters that members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force approached Rahim to question him about "terrorist-related information" they had received when he moved toward officers with the knife.
"We believe the intent was to behead a police officer. "We knew the plot had to be stopped. They were planning to take action Tuesday."

Evans said officers repeatedly ordered Rahim to drop the knife but he continued to advance. He said task force members fired their guns, hitting Rahim once in the torso and once in the abdomen. Rahim was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Later, the FBI and local police arrested a man at a home in Everett, Mass., in an action authorities said was related to the Roslindale shooting. Christina Diorio-Sterling, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, said Wright was taken into custody from his home in suburban Everett. She said Wright will face federal charges and is expected to appear in U.S. District Court on Wednesday.
WFXT reported that three different Joint Terrorism Task Force teams had been carrying out 24-hour surveillance on at least three different people in the Boston area, though it was unclear how long that had been going on.The plot may have been inspired by the terror group ISIS, who have repeatedly called on followers in the United States to attack law enforcement officials or military installations.
Evans did not comment on the report that Rahim had been radicalized by ISIS, but said, "Obviously, there was enough information there where we thought it was appropriate to question him about his doings ... He was someone we were watching for quite a time."
Evans said the officers didn't have their guns drawn when they approached Rahim. He said police have video showing Rahim "coming at officers" while they are backing away. That account differs from one given by Rahim's brother Ibrahim Rahim, who said in a Facebook posting that his youngest brother was killed while waiting at a bus stop to go to his job.
"He was confronted by three Boston Police officers and subsequently shot in the back three times," he wrote. "He was on his cellphone with my dear father during the confrontation needing a witness."
There is surveillance video from the scene which will be released after Rahim's family and civil rights advocates view the footage.
The officer and the agent involved in the shooting weren't physically injured but were evaluated at a hospital for what Evans described as "stress."
WFXT reported that Rahim worked in loss prevention at several CVS stores in the Boston area.
However, it was not clear that the store where he was killed was among them. Boston voter registration records seen by the Associated Press list Rahim as a student. Other records indicate that as recently as two years ago he was licensed as a security officer in Miami, but don't specify in what capacity.
The Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center said its security firm hired Rahim as a security guard for a month in mid-2013. Executive director Yusufi Vali said Rahim didn't regularly pray at the center and didn't volunteer there or serve in any leadership positions.
The FBI and Rhode Island State Police also searched a property in Warwick, R.I. in relation to the Roslindale shooting. Police sealed off a street, requiring anyone who lived there to show identification to pass the police cordon, but it was not clear if they had anyone in custody.
A 17-year-old told the Boston Globe that police had asked him about a neighbor in his mid-20s named Nick. The teen told the paper Nick often wears long robes and prays in his front yard.

Officer John Adsit underwent six hours of surgery Thursday for injuries sustained in the accident and was in critical, but stable condition. But the reaction of young students, reported by the Denver Post, left residents stunned and members of the Denver Police Protection Association angry. Students were heard chanting and cheering after the officers were hit. Teachers looked on and did not intervene while the students chanted, Fox31 Denver reports.
My cousin actually goes to this school, and my mom attended his graduation. During the ceremony the principal of the school applauded the students for participating in this protest. It's sick how an adult can encourage and applaud this behavior.

I was hoping the sequel would be better.
So far locally this hasn't caused any real stink, You have some locals wanna be Rev Al's and such jumping up and down trying to make a name for themselves but it seems like more and more information keeps coming out about the before time of this video and the trouble the kids were causing.
My best guess is that the cop gets fired, and the union gets his job back in about 3 months.
Kids were lucky they weren't Middle Eastern, that would have been a target rich environment.

Alberto Iber lost his job as the principal at North Miami Senior High School after he wrote a comment about the McKinney, Texas incident on the Miami Herald’s website.
“He did nothing wrong,†Iber wrote. “He was afraid for his life. I commend him for his actions.â€
Three sentences. Sixteen words. Sixty-two characters.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools released a statement on June 10 announcing that Mr. Iber had been removed from his position at the high school and reassigned to an administrative position.
The district said they require their employees to conduct themselves “in a manner that represents the school district’s core values.â€
Superintendent Carvahlo sent a very chilling message to his employees – any opinion that is contrary to liberal ideology must be silenced. And those who dare to voice such an opinion in the public marketplace must be severely punished.
“Judgment is the currency of honesty,†Superintendent Alberto Carvalho wrote in a statement. “Insensitivity – intentional or perceived – is both unacceptable and inconsistent with our policies, but more importantly with our expectation of common sense behavior that elevates the dignity and humanity of all, beginning with children.â€
The district’s statement seems to borrow heavily from an ideology that suggests while Americans have free speech – there’s a price to pay for speaking out.
Mr. Iber addressed the firestorm of controversy and affirmed his support for the police in a statement that was released to the Miami Herald.
“I support law enforcement, and also the community and students that I serve as the proud principal of North Miami Senior High,†he wrote. “The comment I posted was simply made as the result of a short video that I watched and my personal opinion.â€
He also said it was not his intention to upset people – and he regretted that his three-sentence message had become newsworthy.
He did not retract what he wrote nor did he apologize for what he wrote.
Local news organizations suggested the reason Iber’s opinion became newsworthy is because North Miami is a “diverse†neighborhood – meaning most of the residents are black.

Strange case. Thug was in custody and was able to shoot the policeman from the back seat of patrol car. Had been searched, obviously and cuffed. Sounds as if they missed the 40 cal in the search, one was left in the car or someone got it to him somehow.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In the moments before his death, a slain New Orleans police officer struggled with the man accused of shooting him from the back seat of a police vehicle as the man shouted, "Let me go before you kill yourself!" according to court documents released Monday.
The documents shed new light on the encounter Saturday morning that took the life of Officer Daryle Holloway and sparked a 24-hour manhunt for the suspect, Travis Boys.
Boys is accused of shooting Holloway from the back seat of a police vehicle — after being frisked and handcuffed — and then escaping.
According to the application police made Saturday requesting an arrest warrant for Boys, he shot Holloway from the back of the police vehicle through an access window, hitting him once on the right side.
Then the two fought for the gun.
"While Officer Holloway struggled with Boys over control of the weapon, Boys yelled three times, 'Let me go before you kill yourself!" the documents said.
Boys was able to crawl from the back of the vehicle to the front through the access window and then escape the car, according to the documents.
"Holloway grew weak from his injury and could no longer hold on to Boys," officers wrote in the warrant request. The police car later crashed into a utility pole.
Holloway was wearing a body camera that authorities used to confirm what happened, police said.
Boys did not use the officer's gun, which was still in his holster, and police don't know how the suspect got hold of the weapon he used.
Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said Boys had previously been frisked, raising questions about whether he was searched thoroughly. The police chief pledged to investigate thoroughly.
Authorities recovered two weapons in the police vehicle: a .38-caliber revolver that had been used in the initial assault for which Boys had been arrested and a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson that was used to shoot the officer, police said.
Boys was first detained early Saturday after police were called to a New Orleans house over a disturbance. Boys was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault after a person at the house said he fired a shot, according to police.
The 45-year-old Holloway was working the day shift and tasked with driving Boys to jail when the shooting happened.
Authorities swept the city Saturday and Sunday looking for Boys. Rifle-toting police in bulletproof vests, some with trained dogs, searched for Boys, checking backyards and crawl spaces under houses as helicopters circled overhead.
Officers on Saturday spotted Boys in a stolen truck and gave chase. The truck crashed into a house, and Boys got out with officers in pursuit, but he eluded them again.
Then on Sunday morning, a rookie police officer and his trainer spotted Boys — still wearing his now-broken handcuffs — trying to board a city bus. He tried to escape again by getting on the bus and then off but was arrested.
Holloway died from a single gunshot wound to his chest that pierced his lungs, heart and major blood vessels, the city's coroner said.
Holloway was a 22-year veteran of the New Orleans police force, described by family and fellow officers as a dedicated officer with an infectious sense of humor.
"My family lost a loved one and the city lost a really good dude," said David Belfield III, an uncle of Holloway's. "If you were with him for 10 minutes, he'd have you laughing."
Belfield called his good-natured nephew a model police officer who treated others with patience. He said he was much-liked by his fellow officers, by those he worked with on the streets and in the tough public housing projects of eastern New Orleans.
"He was always giving you the benefit of the doubt," Belfield said. "We need more like him on the force."
He said Holloway's funeral was scheduled for Saturday.

A Tennessee police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Memphis on Saturday and a manhunt is underway for the suspect, officials said.
Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said during a news conference that police received a call about 9:15 p.m. about an officer being shot. He said the officer was conducting a traffic stop when he was shot multiple times. The officer died at a hospital.
Memphis Police identified the officer as 33-year-old Sean Bolton in a statement Sunday morning. No further details were released.
Armstrong said police have not made an arrest and the suspect is still on the run. He said police are using all available resources to find the shooter.
It’s the third time a Memphis officer has been shot and killed in slightly more than four years. Officer Tim Warrne was killed while responding to a shooting at a downtown Memphis hotel in July 2011. In December 2012, officer Martoiya Lang was killed while serving a warrant.
Armstrong said officers are grieving, adding that “this is just a reminder of how dangerous this job is.â€
"Sadly to say, we've been here before," he said.
Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton Jr. told reporters Saturday that the incident "speaks volumes about the inherent danger of police work."

A frantic manhunt for a gunman was underway Thursday after a Shreveport, La. police officer died Wednesday after being shot on duty.
Shreveport Police Cpt. Marcus Hines told a press conference late Wednesday that the officer, whose name has not been released, was shot at around 9:15 p.m. local time while responding to a report of a suspicious person inside a home. Hines says an armed man was apparently inside the residence, threatening to harm people.
Hines initially said the officer was in “very serious†condition at a hospital, but later told KTAL that the officer had died.
Hines said the Shreveport police, Caddo Parish deputies and canines are searching for a male suspect. A press conference will be held at 9:30 a.m. local time to outline details of the deadly shooting and release the name of the dead officer.
Shreveport police spokesman Bill Goodin told The Associated Press that investigators believe they know who the suspect is and are obtaining a warrant for his arrest.
"Last night, we lost one of our brave, uniformed officers in the line of duty. Our hearts are saddened," Shreveport Mayor Ollie Tyler told KTBS. "We ask for the community’s prayers for this officer’s family and SPD as we grieve the loss of one of our own who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting the citizens of this city."
The station reported that the last fatal shooting of a Shreveport police officer took place in October 2010. Shreveport is the third-largest city in Louisiana with a population of around 200,000 people. A Louisiana State Trooper was shot in the head and critically injured while trying to stop a driver suspected of being drunk or drugged Sunday evening in southwestern Louisiana, state police officials told the Associated Press.
The trooper, who state police Col. Michael Edmonson identified to the Associated Press as Master Trooper Steven Vincent, 43, was listed in critical condition at a local hospital following the incident near Bell City, La., according to Fox-8.
Edmonson said Vincent is a 13-year veteran of the force and comes from a law enforcement family.
One of his brothers is also a state trooper and another is a town police chief, Edmonson said.
He said 54-year-old Kevin Daigle of Lake Charles, La., was arrested. Charges against Daigle will include attempted murder of a police officer, Edmonson said.
Vincent was shot after receiving a call that Daigle was driving erratically and had driven his pickup truck into a ditch.
Capt. Doug Cain, a state police spokesman, confirmed to the Associated Press that Trooper Vincent was shot in the head.
Edmonson says several civilians subdued Daigle, put the trooper's handcuffs on him and gave the trooper first aid.
Other drivers stopped to help, Sgt. James Anderson, spokesman for state police said.
"As I understand it, they rendered aid to the trooper, they called for help using the trooper's radio, and they detained the suspect," state police spokesman Sgt. James Anderson told the Associated Press.
He said Vincent was in critical but stable condition Sunday evening, and the man accused of shooting him was also in a hospital.
"He struggled with the guys who came to assist -- had some scrapes on him and so on," Anderson said.
He said police had received calls Sunday about a maroon Dodge pickup truck with a camper shell that was driving erratically. A bit later, it was reported in a ditch.
Edmonson, posted a message to the department's Facebook page asking for prayers for the injured officer.
The message's subject line was "Trooper Critically Injured — Prayers Needed."
"The entire LSP family is requesting your thoughts and prayers following the shooting of a Louisiana State Police Trooper in the Lake Charles area," Edmonson wrote in the post.
"The incident occurred as the Trooper conducted a traffic stop on a suspected impaired driver and was shot during the course of the interaction. The suspect was subsequently detained by passing motorists as additional citizens rendered aid to the Trooper until assistance arrived on the scene.
Further information and the Trooper's identity and status will be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

CULLMAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) Investigators said a chase led to an officer-involved shooting Sunday
Multiple units including state troopers were called to County Road 1825 near the Marshall-Cullman County Line.
Police confirmed a suspect is dead, and that an officer, Jeff "Preacher" Warren, was injured.
Warren was going to be flown to Birmingham for treatment, but officials say his condition is such that they can fly him to Huntsville instead.
At last check, Warren was in stable condition. The Arab Tribune reports he is undergoing surgery but is expected to make a full recovery.The Arab Police Department noted that Warren was promoted to the rank of Corporal in May.Representative Robert Aderholt said in a ]Tweet Sunday night, "My thoughts and prayers with the Arab Police officer hurt tonight in Cullman County. Police officers have my utmost respect." He added the hashtag #ThinBlueLine.
According to a woman who asked not to be identified, Warren was responding to suspects that had stolen her vehicle.The woman said her husband jumped into an ATV in pursuit of the stolen pickup truck, and a suspect fired two shots at him.Via an iPhone app, the woman was able to track the vehicle's location, and passed the information on to Corporal Warren, who took up the pursuit.
At some point, a gunfight began, wounding Warren and killing one of the suspects.Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said that other individuals connected to this incident have been detained, but could not provide further details at this time.The State Bureau of Investigation is also working the scene. ALEA is leading the investigation.Cullman County District Attorney Wilson Blaylock said the legal authority in the case would likely rest with Cullman County as the shooting took place within that jurisdiction.Blaylock said the identity of the suspect who was killed will not be released at this time.

A Florida Police Department had a beef with Arby’s after a cop was denied service Tuesday evening by a worker at the fast food franchise – simply because the customer was a police officer.
Top corporate officials at roast beef mecca Arby’s quickly apologized after the Pembroke Pines Police Department tweeted on Wednesday about the incident, which Chief Dan Giustino called “unacceptable.â€
“I am offended and appalled that an individual within our community would treat a police officer in such a manner,†Giustino said in a statement.

An officer, in uniform and driving a marked police vehicle, placed an order at a drive-thru speaker Tuesday evening before pulling up to the window to pay and receive the order. But an Arby’s worker at the window refused service.
“The comment was made that they wouldn’t be served because they were a police officer,†Maj. Carlos Bermudez, a Pembroke Pines officer, told FoxNews.com.
Someone else inside the restaurant intervened and gave the officer his order. But, after initially taking it and paying for it, the officer returned the bag and got a refund because he didn’t feel “comfortable.â€
“In my 18 years here I’ve never heard of an incident like this before,†Bermudez said. “Whenever we’ve gone to an establishment, we’ve been treated professionally and great.â€
Less than two hours after the PPPD sent out its initial tweet on the incident, the department followed up: Arby’s had apologized. Arby’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Brown and Senior Vice President of Operations Scott Boatwright spoke to Giustino to “convey their sincere apologizes on behalf of the organization,†according to a police press release.
“We take this isolated matter very seriously as we respect and support police officers in our local communities,†Arby’s said in a statement sent to FoxNews.com. “As soon as the issue was brought to our attention, our CEO spoke with the Police Chief who expressed his gratitude for our quick action and indicates the case is closed. We will be following up with our team members to be sure that our policy of inclusion is understood and adhered to.â€
Numerous calls to the Arby’s at 11755 Pines Blvd were not answered. An Arby’s spokesman said the company would be following through with disciplinary action for the employee "up to and including termination."

Police departments face a recruiting shortage amid a growing anti-cop mood that some fear has taken the pride out of peacekeeping and put targets on the backs of the men and women in blue.
Open calls for the killing of police have been followed by assassinations, including last week's murder in Texas of a Harris County sheriff's deputy. Instead of dialing back the incendiary rhetoric, groups including "Black Lives Matter" have instead doubled down at demonstrations with chants of "Pigs in a blanket, fry em like bacon." Public safety officials fear the net effect has been to demonize police, and diminish the job.
"It's a lot harder to sell now," Jeff Roorda, business manager of the St. Louis Police Officers Association and former state representative, told FoxNews.com. "This is a very real phenomenon."
"We're sitting ducks. We're in these uniforms, brightly colored cars and there's nothing we can do."

Roorda's colleagues witnessed the fierce, anti-police rioting that followed the police shooting last year of Michael Brown in nearby Ferguson, Missouri. Even though a grand jury and a federal Justice Department inquiry did not fault Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, debunked claims that the cop killed Brown as he held his hands up and begged for his life have animated the Black Lives Matter movement as it spread around the nation.
Roorda, who spoke in defense of police in the aftermath of the Ferguson shooting, said protesters took to Twitter to promote a #KillRoorda hashtag.
"You no longer just have to worry about your life while in uniform," he said. "Now you have to be worried about the well-being of your family," he said.
Roorda said the new academy class continues to be delayed and the police force loses about double the amount of officers per year than in the past.
Knowing police face public scorn or career-ending legal battles even if they acted properly has convinced many prospective cops to abandon their dreams of patrolling America's streets.
"I saw all this anti-cop propaganda and I was like, 'Who needs this?'†said Antonio, a New Yorker who asked that only his first name be used. The 32-year-old had applied and been accepted into the NYPD academy, but withdrew his candidacy amid the cop-bashing climate sweeping the country.
"Right now, policing is not the most attractive occupation that they could probably get into," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told CBS.
Recruitment nationally is "way down," said Jonathan Thompson, executive director of the National Sheriff’s Association. He said some sheriffs around the country say the number of applications has fallen by as much as 50 percent.
While blatant calls for killing cops are unusual, the job has always been dangerous. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which monitors the number of police officers killed in the line of duty, tabulated 48 police officers around the nation were killed by gunfire in 2014. So far this year, 26 law enforcement officers have been shot to death on duty, putting the nation on track for a 19 percent decrease. But these numbers do not identify police officers intentionally targeted for the mere fact that they wear a badge.
Police in Texas believe that may have been the sole motivation for the murder Friday night of Harris County Sheriff's Officer Darren Goforth at a gas station in a Houston suburb. The suspect in that case, Shannon Jaruay Miles, allegedly came up behind Goforth as he pumped gas and shot the officer 15 times.
In December 2014, New York City Police Officers Wenjian Liu and his partner Rafael Ramos were killed in an ambush while sitting inside their patrol car on a Brooklyn streetcorner.
"No warning, no provocation," Police Commissioner William Bratton said at the time. "They were quite simply assassinated, targeted for their uniform."
The gunman reportedly announced online that he was planning to shoot two "pigs" to avenge the death of Eric Garner, a Staten Island, N.Y., man who died after being put in a chokehold by police who were arresting him for selling loose cigarettes.
"I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs," Ismaaiyl Brinsley wrote on an Instagram account. Brinsley killed himself on a subway platform as police closed in on him.
There is currently a massive manhunt in Fox Lake, Ill., after a police officer was shot and killed while pursuing a group of men. Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, known affectionately as "GI Joe" was giving chase to three men on foot.
In addition to the Brown and Garner cases, the anti-police sentiment has been fueled by the April death in police custody of Freddie Gray in Baltimore and the fatal shooting, also in April, of Walter Scott in South Carolina. Six Baltimore police officers face charges in the death of Gray, who died of injuries suffered while being transported in a police van. North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager has been charged with murder in Scott's shooting.
Galvanized by the deaths, Black Lives Matter has sought to bring attention to the issue of police brutality with protests around the nation.
"What's more uncomfortable, shouting, stopping freeways and interrupting speeches -- or being murdered by police and having your body left in the street for more than four hours, or turning up dead in a jail cell after a traffic stop?" the group posted on Facebook.
Some law enforcement officials believe President Obama has fanned the flames by not denouncing the movement more unequivocally, although he did personally call the widow of Goforth and has condemned violence against police.
"President Obama has breathed life into this ugly movement," Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke told "Fox & Friends." "And it is time now for good, law-abiding Americans to rise up. We now have to counter this slime, this filth coming out of these cop haters."
Sgt. Delroy Burton, chairman of the DC Police Union in Washington, compared the current treatment of police to veterans returning from the Vietnam War.
"We have to fight the bad guys, and the policymakers go unnoticed," he said.
Burton, who was born in Jamaica and is a former U.S. Marine, said his police force is about 131 officers understaffed and has seen nearly 600 officers resign in the past 19 months -- a number he said is unheard of.
"We're sitting ducks," he said. "We're in these uniforms, brightly colored cars and there's nothing we can do. And the vast majority supports this loud vocal minority."

A Las Vegas police officer was shot Sunday in an ambush attack as he sat with his partner in his squad car, KTNV reported.
The suspected gunman is in custody, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department tweeted.
Two officers were leaving the scene of a disturbance call at a .99 Cents Only store when an individual walked up to their patrol car while it was stopped at a traffic light and fired three shots, striking one of the officers in the hand, KTNV reported.
Police did not return fire during the encounter, which occurred shortly after noon, local time. The officer who was shot is expected to survive; he has not yet been named.
The gunman used a semi-automatic handgun, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Police pursued the alleged shooter on foot until he dropped his weapon and surrendered, according to Metro Sgt. John Sheahan.
A witness at the scene of Sunday's shooting told the Review-Journal that the alleged gunman "didn't resist or put up a fight" when cops caught up to him.
This is the second shooting of a police officer in three days in Las Vegas. A cop was shot in the leg on Friday while responding to a report of a prowler. Since that incident, Las Vegas officers have been riding in pairs in patrol cars, Sheahan said.
The news comes following the murders of officers in Texas and Illinois in the past two weeks. Texas Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was killed as he filled his cruiser with gas on Aug. 28. Goforth was shot from behind; his assailant unloaded 15 bullets, according to authorities. Shannon Miles is charged with capital murder in the case.
In Illinois, Fox Lake Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, 52, was found shot to death Sept. 1. Gliniewicz, a 30-year police veteran who was planning to retire at the end of the month, contacted dispatchers about three suspicious men he was pursuing and requested a second unit. Dispatchers soon lost contact with him, and backup officers found Gliniewicz about 50 yards from his squad car with a gunshot wound. He died soon after. Police are still on the hunt for his killers.

All of those situations are somewhat controllable, at least in the sense that you know there is a possibility of danger and are mentally prepared for it. But just walking up and shooting at someone.....shit. It's harder and harder just to deal with the regular public, wondering if the person who simply wants to shake your hand and thank you for services is about to walk up and shoot you in the face.
I am 100% against a militarized police force, but we get further away from Mayberry every day. I can see a future where the only people who want to do this job are "those guys" who would love nothing more than to walk around with entry level ballistic vest and an assault rifle.

Two Houston police officers were involved in a shootout after a passing car fired at them Tuesday morning.
No one was injured in the incident and cops have two suspects in custody, the Houston Chronicle reported.
The uniformed officers reportedly returned fire after they were shot at by someone in a moving vehicle around 3:30 a.m. Witnesses heard eight shots before the suspects were taken into custody behind the Principe Azul nightclub, according to KHOU.
The encounter comes just two days after a pair of Las Vegas officers were fired upon in their cruiser, with one officer sustaining non-life-threatening injuries during the encounter. Police in Aurora, Colo., received a threatening phone call Sunday evening, with a disguised voice proclaiming, “let us catch you by yourself and it’s shots fired,†according to Fox8.
Police have increasingly been targeted by gunfire during the past several months, with numerous incidents turning deadly. Lt. Charles “Joe†Gliniewicz was shot and killed in Illinois last week in a case that’s spurred a furious manhunt for three suspects. I think that it comes down to adjusting your tactics to the neighborhood. Unfortunately, in order to not look biased, they will try to outfit the whole force in the same way. The police KNOW which neighborhoods are more dangerous than others. Just roll up in that bitch on an armored car every day.

A veteran Arizona police officer is expected to survive after he was shot multiple times while making a traffic stop Wednesday morning.
The Phoenix Police Department tweeted that the unidentified officer, who is an eight-year veteran of the force, was likely to survive “thanks to his vest.â€
“The officer is at the hospital, thank goodness he’s going to be fine,†Police Chief Joseph Yahner told KTAR. “Thank goodness he was wearing his vest. He was shot multiple times, he has some significant injuries.â€
Police are searching for two suspects who fled the scene after the shooting, according to FOX10. One of the suspects is described as a Caucasian, heavy-set male. Police have reportedly located the vehicle, but not the people who were inside.

A veteran Florida sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed Tuesday while serving a domestic violence restraining order had come out of retirement to earn extra money for trips to Disney World with his young granddaughter.
Oklaloosa County Deputy Bill Myers, 64, was shot multiple times in the head and in the back before the suspect died after a confrontation with police.
"He had an ability to make those around him smile, especially his young granddaughter who he adored and took to Disney World as often as he could," Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley said, fighting tears during a news conference late Tuesday.
Myers was a 25-year department veteran. He had retired in 2013, but returned to work in January, Ashley said.
"He was a part of our family. We are a family here," Ashley said.
Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley called the man a “sick little coward,†according to the Pensacola News Journal.
Joel Dixon Smith, 33, was being served a domestic violence restraining order at the lawyer’s office just blocks from the sheriff’s office. He was supposed to be turning over his weapons to Myers when he pulled out a concealed weapon and shot the deputy multiple times, authorities said.
Smith fled in his vehicle to a Comfort Suites hotel about 10 miles away in Niceville, where he had previously booked a room. He barricaded himself in the room until authorities fired tear gas into his room. He charged out firing and was shot and killed by deputies, Ashley said.
No one else was hurt.
Myers is the fourth county deputy who’s been killed since 2008, according to the News Journal.
Smith had been arrested in 2008 for domestic battery. The restraining order was meant to protect Smith’s wife.
Smith was a rural Postal Service carrier, beginning in Niceville in 2013, the agency said in a statement.
Annie Allen works at an awning business next to the law firm. Allen said she and her boss, store owner David Wray, were starting their day when as many as eight gunshots rang out.
"We heard 'pop, pop, pop,'" she said.
Allen called 911, and Wray went to check things out.
Wray said he thought a nearby store had been robbed. Once he saw Myers’ police car he ran over to tell the deputy about what he heard, but instead saw Myers bleeding.
Wray said he was stooped over Myers when a well-dressed man walked out of the law office. Wray said he asked if anyone had called 911, but the man just continued to his truck. That's when another woman screamed that the man was the shooter.
"It was like I was in a movie," Wray said. "I just couldn't believe any of it."
Wray said he used his phone to take photos of the fleeing truck before trying to follow it in his own vehicle.
"I thought I'd chase him, but there was a lot of traffic," Wray said. "I'm not James Bond. I didn't want to get anybody hurt, so I went back."
At the scene of the shooting, Wray said he and another man tried to talk to the deputy, but he didn't respond.
"It was the saddest thing I'd ever seen," Wray said. "I cradled his head for a while. He was bleeding profusely."
At the Comfort Suites, guest David Bump of Ozark, Alabama, said he awoke Tuesday to deputies pounding at his room.
"I opened the door and they had their guns drawn," he said.
Bump said officers took him and other guests across the street, where they spent hours watching the standoff.
"When they brought the guy out, he was on a gurney with his face covered," said Bump, who was working in the area on a construction crew.
Deputy Myers was white. Smith listed himself as Native American on one voter registration and white on a more recent one.

They said he killed the child as part of some sort of ritual. Any of you Northeast Alabama fuzz involved in this case? FOREST ACRES, S.C. – A police officer responding to a report of a suspicious person was fatally shot at a suburban South Carolina mall on Wednesday, and police say a suspect is in custody.
The incident began when the report came in just before 8 a.m., Forest Acres police Chief Gene Sealy told reporters. Two officers responded and attempted to talk to the person, who fled on foot and ran through parts of Richland Mall, including the Barnes and Noble bookstore, officials said.
Officer Greg Alia confronted the person, there was a struggle, and he was shot, Sealy said.
He was taken to a hospital and later died, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
Sealy said a suspect is in custody and is being questioned. Sealy described the man as being armed with a handgun and a knife at the mall. Police did not detail any charges against the man and did not take questions at their news conference.
Sealy said Alia was 32 years old and a seven-year veteran of the department. He and his wife, Kassy, recently had a baby, Sealy said.
"We hope everybody prays for Greg's family," Sealy said. "They will need strength."
Hours after the shooting, most of the mall — anchored by a department store, the bookstore and a theater complex — was closed. Traffic flowed and the parking garage was open, but the main entrance was closed by yellow crime scene tape. Customers pulled in and out of a gas station on the corner. A nearby high school was locked down briefly.
Forest Acres is a residential town virtually surrounded by Columbia. Sealy described it as "a small community, a small police department, but one big family."

A small Minnesota town was mourning the loss of a local sheriff's deputy who was killed early Sunday when an injured suspect grabbed the deputy's gun and killed him.
KMSP reported that 60-year-old Steven Martin Sandberg of the Aitkin County Sheriff's Department was born, raised and lived in the town of Aitkin, a town of just over 2,000 people 125 miles north of Minneapolis.
"His family's been neighbors of ours for years,†Richard and Marilyn Hesch, who also went to church with Sandberg, told the station. "It's going to be a tough one, especially for a small community like this."
Investigators are still trying to determine what led up to Sandberg's shooting by 50-year-old Danny Leroy Hammond. Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said Hammond and Sandberg got into a struggle in Hammond's room at St. Cloud Hospital. Evans said Hammond was not handcuffed at the time.

Just two days after a career criminal allegedly gunned down NYPD officer Randolph Holder in East Harlem, and with his fellow cops still mourning, anti-police activists took to Times Square on Thursday to protest “police terror and murder.â€
Holder’s murder on Tuesday night made him the fourth NYPD officer to die in the line of duty in the last year, which has also seen anti-police groups call for killing police. But the demonstrators who carried signs at 47th street and Broadway decrying “victims of police murder†seemed oblivious to the trauma felt throughout the city after Holder, an African-American and second-generation police officer, was killed trying to protect New Yorkers..
"People have had enough of the anti-cop protest, and it's time these people go get a job and find a different agenda," Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins told FoxNews.com. "It's just the arrogance of the whole thing. This is a naysayer group. If there's a bit of intelligence put into any of this, they'd realize all their facts are incorrect."
Qiara Butler was at Thursday's Times Square rally holding a sign bearing the picture of her cousin Tyrone West. An autopsy determined West died of a heart condition that was exacerbated during an incident with Baltimore police in July 2013. Butler said she didn’t think the timing of the protest, which was planned before Holder’s murder, was an issue.
“Everyone out here is protesting for their family, so we’re in a constant state of mourning,†Butler told FoxNews.com. “We’ve been mourning since July 18th [2013] and no one ever stopped their daily routine for our mourning. So we deserve our time to mourn with the other families as well.â€
Given the prevalence of “Black Lives Matter†signs at the event, including on one large, yellow cloth held by members of the so-called Granny Peace Brigade, Butler was asked if the life of Holder, who was black, also mattered.
“I would hope that his family realizes that his life is included in that ‘Black Lives Matter’ slogan,†she said. “We’re talking about black bodies being persecuted across the world.â€
Though some of the demonstrators spoke of a more inclusive message, their regalia and posters told a different story.
One display featured a picture of Michael Brown next to a mocked-up “wanted poster†for Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Miss. police officer who shot Brown during an altercation in August 2014. Elsewhere, a man carried a black flag with the “anarchy†symbol drawn on it. Two small groups of police officers stood apart from the crowd and looked on as one man leaned into a microphone and called for “the whole justice system to be dismantled.â€
“Nobody’s here saying anything bad about cops – we’re here talking about killer cops, holding killer cops responsible,†said Tawanda Jones, Tyrone West’s sister.
The three-day “National March to STOP Police Terror†on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is set to have events in numerous city spots, among them Washington Square Park and Bryant Park in Manhattan and a march to Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn later Thursday. The event was “initiated†by activists Dr. Cornel West and Carl Dix, a self-described revolutionary. Several high-profile “selected endorsers†for the event include former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers, actors Ed Asner and Mark Ruffalo and singer Harry Belafonte.

Just two days after a career criminal allegedly gunned down NYPD officer Randolph Holder in East Harlem, and with his fellow cops still mourning, anti-police activists took to Times Square on Thursday to protest “police terror and murder.â€
Holder’s murder on Tuesday night made him the fourth NYPD officer to die in the line of duty in the last year, which has also seen anti-police groups call for killing police. But the demonstrators who carried signs at 47th street and Broadway decrying “victims of police murder†seemed oblivious to the trauma felt throughout the city after Holder, an African-American and second-generation police officer, was killed trying to protect New Yorkers..
"People have had enough of the anti-cop protest, and it's time these people go get a job and find a different agenda," Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins told FoxNews.com. "It's just the arrogance of the whole thing. This is a naysayer group. If there's a bit of intelligence put into any of this, they'd realize all their facts are incorrect."
Qiara Butler was at Thursday's Times Square rally holding a sign bearing the picture of her cousin Tyrone West. An autopsy determined West died of a heart condition that was exacerbated during an incident with Baltimore police in July 2013. Butler said she didn’t think the timing of the protest, which was planned before Holder’s murder, was an issue.
“Everyone out here is protesting for their family, so we’re in a constant state of mourning,†Butler told FoxNews.com. “We’ve been mourning since July 18th [2013] and no one ever stopped their daily routine for our mourning. So we deserve our time to mourn with the other families as well.â€
Given the prevalence of “Black Lives Matter†signs at the event, including on one large, yellow cloth held by members of the so-called Granny Peace Brigade, Butler was asked if the life of Holder, who was black, also mattered.
“I would hope that his family realizes that his life is included in that ‘Black Lives Matter’ slogan,†she said. “We’re talking about black bodies being persecuted across the world.â€
Though some of the demonstrators spoke of a more inclusive message, their regalia and posters told a different story.
One display featured a picture of Michael Brown next to a mocked-up “wanted poster†for Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Miss. police officer who shot Brown during an altercation in August 2014. Elsewhere, a man carried a black flag with the “anarchy†symbol drawn on it. Two small groups of police officers stood apart from the crowd and looked on as one man leaned into a microphone and called for “the whole justice system to be dismantled.â€
“Nobody’s here saying anything bad about cops – we’re here talking about killer cops, holding killer cops responsible,†said Tawanda Jones, Tyrone West’s sister.
The three-day “National March to STOP Police Terror†on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is set to have events in numerous city spots, among them Washington Square Park and Bryant Park in Manhattan and a march to Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn later Thursday. The event was “initiated†by activists Dr. Cornel West and Carl Dix, a self-described revolutionary. Several high-profile “selected endorsers†for the event include former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers, actors Ed Asner and Mark Ruffalo and singer Harry Belafonte.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A rural Kentucky school district has canceled classes for a second straight day as authorities search for a fugitive accused of shooting at law officers in two states.
Cumberland County schools Superintendent Kirk Biggerstaff said Tuesday he doesn't want student waiting for buses in sparsely-populated areas while Floyd Ray Cook is still at large.
The 62-year-old Cook is believed to be on foot after a Saturday shootout with a Kentucky state police trooper. Cook was last seen in the hilly, wooded countryside in Cumberland County, which borders Tennessee.
Cook is charged with attempted first-degree murder in Tennessee for allegedly shooting and wounding a police officer Saturday. Authorities say the officer's life was saved by his bulletproof vest.
Cook is accused of opening fire later Saturday at the Kentucky trooper, who wasn't wounded.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – An Albuquerque police officer shot during a traffic stop last week has died, Albuquerque police said Thursday.
Chief Gorden Eden, Jr. said in a statement that Officer Daniel Webster died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday. He had served on the police force for nearly nine years.
Webster suffered gunshot wounds to his upper body and jaw on the night of Oct. 21 after Davon Lymon, 34, opened fire outside a pharmacy and fled, police said.
Lymon's lengthy criminal history and those of men charged in other recent high-profile cases in New Mexico have led to widespread criticism from law enforcement officials. They are calling on the Legislature to enact sentencing reforms, and increase resources for police and prosecutors in high-crime areas.
In the days following the shooting, Eden described Webster as a high-performing, highly decorated officer who had recently left a detective post to patrol the streets as the force faced an officer shortage.
He underwent multiple surgeries, police said.
Webster had pulled over Lymon for riding a motorcycle with a stolen license plate, and when they found Lymon, he was hiding in a shed with a handcuff on his left wrist. The suspect was hospitalized for injuries he suffered when he was apprehended by a police dog.
Authorities also said a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol was found in a vacant lot where Lymon headed after the shooting.
Lymon is in federal custody and faces one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to court records. A judge has ordered he remain jailed pending trial.
Lymon's prior criminal record in New Mexico includes voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery charges from 2001. He pleaded guilty to charges in that case, and to fraud and forgery charges from the year before. He also faced aggravated battery and kidnapping charges last year that were dismissed, court records show.

A central Kentucky police officer died early Friday after he was shot in the head by a career criminal who vowed he was "not going back" to prison, investigators say.
Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis, 33, was shot Wednesday while searching an apartment for the robbery suspect, according to authorities. The officer died at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
Authorities said Ellis and another officer went to an apartment in search of a man who tried to mug a woman in the parking lot of a downtown gas station.
While there, police said the suspect, Raleigh Sizemore Jr., 34, shot Ellis in the head. The second officer returned fire and struck Sizemore, who was treated at the hospital and released to police custody.
Sizemore was charged with attempted murder of a police officer and unlawful imprisonment first degree.
Two others in the apartment during the shootout were also arrested: Gregory Ratliff, 25, was charged with complicity to commit murder, and Rita Creech, 44, was booked with robbery in the first degree.
A police report detailing the incident said Sizemore allegedly told Ratliff moments before the shooting that he had spent “half his life in prison and (was) not going back.â€
Sizemore also allegedly told Ratliff to “not to let them in or he would shoot him,†the police report said, according to USA Today.
Sizemore then led Creech into a bedroom in the back of the apartment with a gun in his hand and Ratliff let Ellis in, allowing Ellis to search the apartment but claimed no one else was there and there were no weapons inside, the report said.
The report alleges that Sizemore opened fire on Ellis “as soon as he began to cross the threshold of the bedroom door.â€
All three suspects are being held at the Madison County Detention Center.
"It's just heartbreaking," Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes told The Associated Press. "It's an emotional time for everyone in the community. Those guys work so hard to protect the city."
Ellis, a seven-year veteran of the force, had remained in the hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries following the Wednesday shooting.
Barnes said people in Richmond, which has a population of about 32,000 people, had already been talking about raising money for Ellis' family while he was in the hospital. Barnes said he is also concerned with how to better protect Ellis' colleagues who are still on the police department.
“He was always in a good mood, always had a smile on his face,†Richmond Police Maj. Steve Gregg said earlier this week, according to USA Today. “He was always eager to help his fellow officers. Police work is like a big brotherhood. And he was like everybody’s brother.â€
Gregg said Ellis was on track to be promoted to detective early next year. The Officer Down Memorial Page, which describes itself as a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring America's fallen law enforcement heroes, said Ellis is the 106th officer to die in the line of duty this year and the fifth in Kentucky

Towon Obryan Earl of Columbus wounded three Columbus police officers before an officer shot him on 28th Street, according to today's testimony in Recorder's Court.
Earl, a 29-year-old with a history of run-ins with the law, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. After appearing in Columbus Recorder’s Court in a wheelchair, he was sent back to the Muscogee County Jail under bonds totaling $300,000, and the case was bound over to Superior Court.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Deanna Jury said Columbus police were in a well-known drug area in the 300 block of 28th Street Tuesday morning when they noticed a vehicle stopped in the roadway with someone “leaning into the car.â€
The driver, identified as Earl, backed into the parking lot nearby whenever he spotted police in the area, Jury said.
The agent said Officer Ryan Vardman approached the vehicle and spoke to Earl. The officer was standing behind the open driver’s door when the defendant attempted to flee, she said.
According to the agent, Earl backed up and struck Officer Michael Aguilar with the bumper of his vehicle. The driver’s door struck Vardman, and the officer jumped into the moving vehicle to avoid getting run over, she added. Unable to get completely inside of the vehicle, Vardman grabbed onto the car.
Authorities said Earl pulled forward and the driver’s door struck Cpl. Dean Spata. The impact pushed Vardman further into the vehicle. He tried to pull himself all the way into the vehicle but wasn’t successful, officials said.
The driver dragged Vardman along the ground before striking an undercover police vehicle and an apartment, officials said.
Officer Raymond Harralson, a five-year veteran, shot Earl in the right leg after police said he witnessed Earl reach for a visible gun.
Chief Ricky Boren said a gun was recovered Tuesday.
Harralson has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the incident is being investigated by the GBI and the CPD Office of Professional Standards, according to a release from Columbus police.
At least two officers on the scene, including Vardman, were wearing a body camera during the incident.
According to Jury’s testimony, Earl told officials that he tried to flee the area because he didn’t want to go to jail for driving without a license.
In court, Earl denied dragging Vardman, saying the officer was completely inside of the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Earl, who was wanted on multiple warrants, also faces one count each of possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, theft by receiving stolen property in another state, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, theft by receiving stolen property and reckless conduct. He is set to face those charges in Recorder’s Court at 8 a.m. today

A New Hampshire police officer is being hailed by an employee of a discount store for doing "the kindest thing in the entire world†by saving a child’s birthday celebration.
Officer Michael Kotsonis was called to an Ocean State Job Lot store in Portsmouth last week, where he learned that a woman stole cake mix, Crisco and frosting, according to the Portsmouth Herald.
An investigation led Kotsonis to the mother’s home and the stolen items, with the mother saying she took them to bake a child’s birthday cake, the newspaper reported.
Kotsonis, a 19-year veteran of the city’s police force, then brought the items back to the manager and bought them for the mother.
"I'm not going to take away a kid's birthday cake," he told the Portsmouth Herald. "I ended up bringing it back to the mother."
Kotsonis said “it doesn’t make it right†just because the mother didn’t steal the items for herself, “but the kid shouldn’t have to pay.â€
A store employee informed the newspaper of Kotsonis’ deed, describing it as "the kindest thing in the entire world.
"If you can help someone out, you do,†Acting Deputy Police Chief Frank Warchol told the newspaper, when asked about Kotsonis’ actions.

The man caught in surveillance footage ambushing a Philadelphia officer in a squad car, shooting him multiple times, claimed he acted "in the name of Islam," police said at a news conference Friday.
The suspect's gun had been stolen from police in 2013, Commissioner Richard Ross said.
The suspect, 30-year-old Edward Archer, told homicide investigators he "pledges his allegiance to Islamic State, he follows Allah, and that is the reason he was called upon to do this," Captain James Clark revealed.
Archer wore "Muslim garb," a law enforcement source told Fox News. The source would not elaborate.
Officer Jesse Hartnett was in stable condition at a hospital, police said. The suspect fired a total of 13 shots Thursday night, Ross said. Three bullets struck the officer in his left arm.
FBI and other law enforcement investigators searched his homes Friday, according to police. They say the suspect has addresses in Philadelphia and the suburb of Yeadon. He did not reveal whether he was engaged in a larger "conspiracy," Ross told reporters.
Police officials say the gun was reported stolen from an officer's home in October 2013 but they don't know how many people handled the weapon before Thursday's shooting.
Hartnett returned fire, hitting his attacker at least three times, Ross added.
"We are working side-by-side with the Philadelphia Police Department. They remain the lead agency as we work together to gather information about the attack on their officer," the FBI announced.
"This is absolutely one of the scariest things I've ever seen," Ross said at a news conference a few hours later. "This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming."
The suspect ran away, but was quickly apprehended by other officers roughly a block away. There was no immediate word on the suspect's condition.
In a statement, Governor Tom Wolf said, "This alleged intentional act of violence against an officer seeking to help a fellow citizen is horrifying and has no place in Pennsylvania."
Jim Kenney, who is in his first week as mayor of the nation's fifth largest city, said, "There are just too many guns on the streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that."
His statement comes on the heels of President Barack Obama announcement on Tuesday of his plan to tighten control and enforcement of firearms in the United States.

A veteran Utah police officer is dead and so is the man suspected of shooting him after a car crash investigation turned deadly on Sunday morning, FOX13 reported.
Another officer, who was shot three times during the incident, was undergoing surgery Sunday evening, according to a reporter from KSL.com.
Unified Police Officer Doug Barney, an 18-year veteran and a father of three, was originally listed in critical condition but eventually died from a gunshot wound to the head. Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder announced the news Sunday evening, ABC4 reported.
Police are searching for a woman who also was involved in the episode. It is unknown if she is armed.
"We do not know who she is as of yet," Lt. Lex Bell said earlier on Sunday, according to KSL.com. "I understand she is a white female with blonde hair, and that's about all that I have."
Cops were responding to a traffic accident in Holladay when a man, later named as Cory Lee Henderson, and the unidentified woman fled from a Black BMW 3-series sedan. Cops pursued the pair on a foot and a firefight ensued.
"Ultimately, there was a confrontation," Bell said.
Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FOX13. Winder said Henderson fired the shot that struck Barney in the head.
The search continues for the woman.
“Our suggestion would be shelter in place, stay inside if you can,†Bell told KSL.com. “I know there may be people travelling from church, which is okay, but if they could at all help it, try to limit their being outside. We’re going to have police canines in the area and helicopters. The more we can eliminate interference by these other people, and concentrate on the one person we’re looking for, it makes it a lot easier.â€

Two sheriff’s deputies were shot and killed Wednesday at a busy Maryland shopping center by a gunman who was also killed in the resulting shootout, authorities said.
The identities of the deputies have not been released.
The suspect, identified as 67-year-old David Evans, had outstanding warrants in two states for his arrest, including for assaulting an officer in Florida, officials said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
The second warrant was issued in Harford County, Maryland.
Remarkably, no bystanders were hurt in the exchange of gunfire, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said.
The first shooting took place inside a Panera restaurant in a shopping center in Abingdon, which is about 20 miles northeast of Baltimore.
Sophia Faulkner, 15, said she and her mother were getting lunch and almost sat right next to the gunman. Instead, they chose a booth about 10 feet away because the man appeared "sketchy" and disheveled. He was sitting in the back and hadn't ordered any food, Faulker and her mother said.
A sheriff's deputy was called to the restaurant after a report about someone causing a problem. The deputy tried to talk to the man, who was apparently known to workers. The deputy sat down beside him, asked how he was doing and the man shot him in the head. The deputy later died at the hospital, officials said.
"I saw him fall back out of his chair and the blood started coming out," Faulkner said. "I didn't know how to process it. My mom said, `What's going on?' and I said, `Get down, someone just got shot."'
She said "everyone started screaming" after the gunshot and children -- out of school because of snowfall -- were running around.
"I was freaking out so much and everybody was running to one side of the store. Families were huddling together. I didn't really know what was going on," she said. "You see this stuff online and in movies and on TV when it happens, but you never think you're going to go out to lunch one day with your mom and it's just going to happen."
The gunman fled and witnesses gave officers a description and the direction he was headed, the sheriff said. After at least one deputy caught up with him, shots were exchanged, leaving the second deputy wounded and the suspect dead, the sheriff said. The second deputy later died at the hospital.
"I saw two women and a child run from Panera to our back door. They were hysterical. They said they heard gunshots," said bartender Mike Davis, who was working at the Ocean City Brewing Co.'s Taphouse. "We locked the door and went to talk to a cop. The cop said not to let anyone in. Then, we heard more gunshots, `Pop, pop, pop, pop,' from down in the shopping center. It was hectic."
The sheriff said investigators believe the person acted alone and there is no further threat to the community.
"The restaurant was very full at lunchtime," Gahler said. "Thankfully, no one else was injured."
The shopping center is called the Boulevard at Box Hill. It has a mix of shops, restaurants, a grocery store and a bank.
Yellow tape blocked off the Panera and Taphouse restaurants, but people were coming and going freely at other businesses after the shooting.

A Mississippi police officer was in critical condition Sunday after being shot in the face while investigating a convenience store armed robbery.
Clarksdale Police Cpl. Derrick Couch was airlifted to a Memphis hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Fox 13 Memphis reported.
The shooting occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday as police were investigating a hold-up at the Corner Grocer in Clarksdale, near City Hall.
Clarksdale Mayor Bill Luckett told WMC-TV two men in masks pulled off the robbery. He said one was armed with a pistol.
Couch spotted one of the suspects five blocks away, across from police headquarters. The officer got out of his vehicle, confronted the suspect and was shot, Fox 13 reported.
The two suspects got away.
Fox 13 reported that police were reviewing security video from the Corner Grocery.
Couch became a Clarksdale cop in 2011, the station reported. Prior to that he was a deputy with the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office.

A Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics law enforcement officer assigned to a SWAT team was killed early Saturday after an hours-long standoff in rural north Mississippi ended in gunfire, authorities said.
Officials said James Lee Tartt, 44, of Grenada, was killed in the line of duty in the standoff situation at a home near the town of Iuka in Tishomingo County.
Three state troopers with the SWAT team were wounded in the shootout and taken to area hospitals.
Two of the wounded had wounds that were not considered life-threatening. The condition of the third was unclear Saturday morning.
Tishomingo County Coroner Mack Wilemon said the gunfire came after a standoff developed at a house where police had responded to some kind of domestic disturbance Friday evening.
A state SWAT team was summoned and six hours later around midnight was forcing its way into the house when the gunfire erupted, Wilemon said.
"They negotiated. They must have decided it wasn't going too well. The SWAT team stormed the house," Wilemon said.
Wilemon identified the suspected gunman as Charles Lambert of Iuka, 45.
Lambert had holed up in the house with his wife and 10-year-old daughter. Neither was injured.
Tartt had been with the narcotics bureau for 16 years, according to Fox affiliate MS News Now. In 2011 he was named the bureau’s Agent of the Year award and and in 2012 he received the H. Lane Caldwell Award of Valor.
He is survived by his wife and two children, the station reported.
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant expressed his condolences to Tartt’s family, according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.
"Our men and women in law enforcement put themselves in harm's way every hour of every shift,†Bryant said. “This is a tragic reminder that their willingness to serve can exact the highest price."

PHOENIX – Phoenix police and firefighters braved bullets and flames as they responded to a shooting and house fire that left five family members dead Tuesday, including the gunman, authorities said.
The shooter fired at officers who donned breathing gear to go into the burning home to help the victims, and some firefighters battling the blaze stood on the roof as flames gushed out, venting the home to reduce heat and improve visibility inside. Three officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
Four people killed in the morning violence were adults, and a girl, whose age was not known, later died at a hospital, police Sgt. Trent Crump said. He said police shot the gunman.
Crump declined to release names or specify the relationships of the people involved, but he said they were a family of five and that the shooter was the brother or son of the victims.
A 911 caller in the home begged for help, describing the shooting as a domestic situation. The first officers on scene went into the house because they felt they had to act quickly, Crump said.
"You have people that need you to come and rescue them and you now have not only a fire, but somebody who's also firing a gun in there," the sergeant said.
Authorities pulled two victims from the home in a cul-de-sac, then a tactical team stormed in 45 minutes later when the gunfire stopped and shot the gunman, he said.
The shooter had set the house on fire, which crews extinguished after it flared up for a second time, fire Capt. Reda Riddle-Bigler said. Officials found the other victims when the flames were out.
Investigators would now "begin the painstaking process inside that home" to determine exactly what happened, Crump said.
Tiffany Taylor, who lives down the block, said emergency lights and sirens woke her up at 4:30 a.m.
She went outside, heard two popping noises, saw 15 police vehicles speed toward the house, heard more popping and smelled smoke, she said. An officer told her to go back inside.
Taylor said a woman who lived in the home was friendly and they chatted when they ran into each other.
"Every single time we walked by, she spoke to us," said Taylor, who didn't recall the woman's name.
Taylor said the woman had a daughter who dressed as an angel last Halloween.
"She was wearing all white. I told her how beautiful she was," she said.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton was at the scene after crews tamped down the fire.
"This is what heroes look like," he said of police and firefighters. "Their professionalism and their heroism under the worst possible conditions has truly blown me away."

A sheriff’s deputy was killed and two others were injured Wednesday in a shootout shortly after serving an eviction notice in a rural area about 45 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado.
A suspect, who was not immediately identified, was killed in the gunfire, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley told the Denver Post. It was unclear if a deputy shot the suspect or if he shot himself.
The notice was served at around 9:30 a.m. local time. The three deputies approached the home when the suspect fired a rifle at them.
A 12-year member of the sheriff's office was pronounced dead at the scene, KDVR.com reported and the injured deputies were taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.
The injured deputies were identifed as an 11-year veteran who suffered life-threatening injuries and the other was a 21-year veteran. He suffered nonlife-threatening injures.
The incident occurred in the Park County mountain town of Bailey. Law enforcement officers are investigating the property with the assistance of a bomb squad that was dispatched out of an "abundance of caution."
"It's a dark day," Susan Medina, a police spokeswoman said.
Park County is a smaller, largely rural county and sometimes gets assistance from larger outside agencies. Neither the circumstances of the shooting nor the conditions of the wounded deputies were immediately clear.
The picturesque town is where a gunman took several girls hostage in a high school classroom a decade ago, killing one of them before himself. Duane Morrison, a 53-year-old drifter, held the girls for nearly four hours and sexually assaulted them in September 2006.
He fatally shot 16-year-old Emily Keyes and then killed himself as SWAT team members stormed the classroom at Platte Canyon High School.
One cafe owner in town told the Post that the town in typically quiet. "I usually hear horses making noise and livestock," he said. "Certainly not gunshots other than people doing target practice."

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An off-duty Jacksonville sheriff's detective was taking his son to school when he was shot and critically wounded by a 19-year-old man who told his girlfriend minutes earlier that it was "going to be his last day on Earth," police said Wednesday.
The plainclothes narcotics detective chose to stop Kevin Rojas' white Cadillac after seeing it driving erratically, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Tom Hackney said. Rojas had just threatened his girlfriend with a gun and fired shots in their house before taking off in his car.
"It was bad luck that the officer encounters him immediately after this," he said.
The detective, who is not being identified because he works undercover, was wearing a "body armor" style vest when he stopped Rojas' car, Hackney said. He was taking his son to school, then continuing on to work. The word "police" was marked clearly on the vest.
Rojas immediately opened fire, Hackney said, hitting the detective in the head, upper body and hand. Thedetective was in critical but stable condition and alert at a hospital.
The detective returned fire, but missed.
Rojas ran away from the shooting scene and stole a large flatbed truck from a nearby business, Hackney said.
The detective, whose 14-year-old son was in the car but unharmed, managed to call for help.
With the help of a bystander, officers located the truck and pursued it into a nearby neighborhood, where it crashed into a house. Rojas ran through the house to the back, and two officers found him holding a gun. They ordered him to drop it, Hackney said, and when he didn't, Rojas was shot four times. He survived and is still in the hospital.
The officers who fired the shots that struck Rojas are on administrative leave.
The gun used by Rojas was legally purchased by one of his roommates, who told police she bought it because of his erratic behavior in recent weeks, Hackney said. Police said he had a minor previous arrest record.
Rojas' mother Amy Wyss told detectives and WJXT-TV that her son was not a violent man.
"This is not him," she said in a television interview. "I'm sorry the officer was shot. From the bottom of my heart, I'm sorry.

A Maryland police officer was killed Sunday afternoon and two people were in custody after what authorities called an "unprovoked attack."
Prince George's County Police Officer Jacai Colson, 28, was pronounced dead after being taken to Prince George's Hospital Center.
Gunfire erupted at around 4:30 p.m. local time in Landover, a suburb about 10 miles northeast of downtown Washington, D.C. Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski told a press conference that the initial gunfire prompted several officers to return fire at the alleged shooter, who was wounded but was expected to survive.
"Those officers did not shrink. They bravely advanced and engaged this individual," Stawinski said.
Stawinski said a second man was believed to have been present with the suspected shooter when the shots erupted, but fled and was later arrested.
"It wasn't about anything. This man launched an attack on a police station," Stawinski told WTVR. "Officers weren't in the process of apprehending him or engaging him in any way. They were going about their business on a Sunday afternoon, at their home, when they were attacked."
Immediately after the shooting, police advised residents near the police station to stay inside, and others to avoid the area, because of an "active shooter" situation. They later lifted the "shelter in place" advice in a message on Twitter soon after the second suspect was apprehended.
WTTG reported that Colson was ambushed by the suspect, who walked up and opened fire without warning. Colson was working as an undercover narcotics officer at the time of his death, though Stawinski said that had no relation to his shooting.
Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks called the shooting an "act of cowardice" and a "horrific act of evil." She promised an aggressive investigation and prosecution of the suspects, whose names were not immediately released.
"This is a crime against this entire community and we will treat it as such," Alsobrooks said. "His life was precious."
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement Sunday night he was "shocked and saddened" over the officer's killing.
"It is my hope that his proud legacy of commitment and passion for law enforcement and serving others will provide some comfort in the difficult days that lie ahead," he said.
The Washington Post reported that one woman near the site grabbed her sleeping, 14-month old baby from his play pen when she heard what she thought might be either firecrackers or gunshots. The woman told the newspaper she looked outside and saw a man dressed in black firing a handgun.
"He fired one shot, and then he started pacing back and forth, then fired another shot," said Lascelles Grant, who then watched police officers pour out of the station. "Just looking outside, I'm like, 'Oh my God, look at all these police officers running out, putting their lives really in danger.'"
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have begun assisting local police in the investigation, spokesmen for the two federal agencies said. They said the Prince George's County Police remained the lead investigating agency.
Dave Fitz, spokesman for the FBI in Maryland, told the AP that the FBI "reached out and offered support" and sent a couple of special agents to assist. He had no further details.

Three Chicago police officers investigating suspected drug dealing on the city's west side were shot and wounded Monday night before their attacker was killed.
Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi posted on Twitter that none of the officers' injuries were life-threatening.
The spokesman told the Associated Press that five police officers observed a man and a woman acting suspiciously and decided to investigate further. When they announced their presence, the man ran into a gangway between two buildings and opened fire. Guglielmi said the gunman injured three officers before being fatally injured by an officer's return fire.
The dead suspect's identity was not immediately available. Guglielmi said the woman was arrested after a chase and was being questioned in connection with the shooting.
Fox 32 Chicago reported that one of the injured officers was shot in the foot while a second officer was shot in the back. The Chicago Tribune reported that the third officer was shot in the chest, but may have been wearing a bulletproof vest.
Neither suspect was identified by authorities, who added a gun used by the dead suspect was recovered at the scene.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante visited the officers and their families at the hospital.
Emanuel said in a statement the shooting was a reminder "of the dangers that our police face, and the bravery that they routinely display as three of our officers were shot in line of duty. The thoughts and prayers of our entire city are with the officers and their families during this difficult time."
The shooting comes a day after authorities say an undercover narcotics officer in Maryland was mortally wounded by one of his colleagues as he responded to an attack on his police station by a gunman.
A woman who lived on the same block where the shooting occurred told the Chicago Sun-Times that she heard approximately 15 gunshots. She told the paper that she saw three ambulances leaving the scene amid a strong police presence.
"It was a sea of blue lights," she said.
Talking to reporters after visiting the officers, Escalante thanked the Illinois State Police for closing an expressway to allow the wounded officers quick transport to the hospital. Dozens of police officers met the ambulances at the hospital.
"I want to thank Chicago Fire Department paramedics for their quick response in getting our officers here safely," he said. "Again, a thanks to the staff here at county hospital for taking care of our injured officers."
Police said in a statement that the city's Independent Police Review Authorities will investigate. The officers involved will be put on standard administrative duties for 30 days.

A South Carolina police chief says an officer was shot and killed as he attempted to serve a warrant and a suspect later killed himself.
Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller said several officers were trying to serve a warrant on a man identified as a self-admitted gang member around 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Miller told a news conference that the suspect saw the officers, ran from them and opened fire, hitting one of them multiple times.
Miller said the officer, whose identity hasn't been released pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
According to Miller, the suspect called his mother before he shot and killed himself.

An Ohio police officer was in critical condition Sunday, hours after he was allegedly shot by an accused arsonist while the officer was serving a warrant, authorities said.
The suspected gunman, Lincoln Rutledge, allegedly opened fire on SWAT officers who were serving a felony arrest warrant around 3 a.m. Sunday morning, officials told FOX28.
SWAT officers came under fire when they attempted to move near to the suspect’s apartment with an armored vehicle. That’s when the unnamed officer was hit. That Columbus Police Officer was described only as a veteran officer who was well-liked and respected.
“Our officer is in very critical condition,†Police Chief Kim Jacobs said. “We won’t know what happens to him for some time at this point in time. We do need everyone to pray for him.â€
A fire erupted at Rutledge’s apartment complex during the standoff, displacing six families, The Red Cross said. The 44-year-old Rutledge finally gave up around 7:15 a.m. after a loud bang was heard inside the apartment that police say was part of a strategy to end the standoff.
Rutledge, who was wanted in connection with a fire at a home on Saturday, was eventually arrested after a standoff. He’s been charged with attempted murder for the shooting of the police officer. Rutledge was treated for smoke inhalation and an apparent gunshot wound.
Jacobs said the SWAT team was present because of what she called "erratic behavior" by the suspect and because police knew he had access to guns.
She said it was difficult to explain why the suspect decided to open fire, but emphasized it's a dangerous time for police.
"There are some very desperate people out there, very dangerous people out there," Jacobs said. "Sometimes they choose to go out in a certain way and-or take us on in a certain way."

Firefighter Lives Don't Matter
One firefighter was killed and another firefighter was in serious condition Friday night after being shot while making a welfare check at a Maryland home, officials said.
Prince George’s County Police Department spokeswoman Julie Parker identified the deceased fireman as John Ulmshneider, 39. She said Ulmshneider was a 13-year veteran of the department.
Department officials said in a statement that volunteer firefighter Kevin Swain also was shot, and was in serious condition.
Swain suffered multiple wounds to the body and was flown by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Prince County George’s County Fire and EMS spokesman said, according to WTTG-TV.
Prince George’s County Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III said at a news conference that firefighters and police had gone to the Temple Hills home after being called by a person concerned the individual inside might be suffering from a medical condition.
When the firefighters arrived at the house, the person inside was unresponsive. The firefighters decided to force their way inside and were met with gunfire. A person inside fired several rounds, striking two firefighters and the person who had initially made the call for a welfare check.
Stawinski said that once officers got into the home, the gunfire stopped. He said no officers fired weapons.
"Will it ever end? God, I hope so," Stawinski said.
Deputy Fire Chief Benjamin Barksdale said earlier Friday that both firefighters were both critically injured, and one was flown to a trauma center.
The civilian was not seriously injured, according to the police chief.
The person who was inside the home was in custody and cooperating with police, Stawinski said.
The identity of the person inside the home was not immediately available.
"The main thing that we ask for the men and women of Prince George's County are your prayers, your thoughts," said Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker.

A Phoenix police officer was in extremely critical condition Thursday morning after a shooting that left a burglary suspect dead.
Police Chief Joe Yahner didn't release the officer's name but said he's "a good man," about 35 years old and is a 12-year department veteran with a wife and two small children.
Yahner said the officer is "fighting for his life."

A police officer was shot in a central Massachusetts town overnight Sunday and sources said the officer later died, Fox 25 Boston reported.
The shooter is on the loose, the station reported.
Massachusetts State Police said the Auburn police officer was shot at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Auburn is about 45 miles southwest of Boston.
The officer was rushed to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, WGGB/WSHM-TV reported.
The officer's identity was not immediately available.
Investigators believe the officer was driving in a cruiser and collecting ballistic evidence when the shooting took place, WMUR-TV reported.
The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle and police were looking for him, the station reported.
Auburn Police are assisting State Police in the investigation.

A gunman suspected of shooting and wounding two Northern California police was holed up in a burning house early Thursday and in an armed standoff with law officers, authorities said.
The officers from the Fremont Police Department were shot Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop turned violent, prompting a manhunt that involved a house to house search that lasted well into the night.
The lone suspect was eventually tracked down to a home in the San Francisco Bay-area community of Fremont, where he was involved in the standoff, said Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff's office.
"We have one shooter that shot our officers," Kelly told The Associated Press. "He's inside and we're negotiating for him for him to surrender. We're actively engaged in that process right now."
Witnesses heard eight to nine loud bangs early Thursday, which were believed to be from flash bombs.
He said no one was home when the suspect broke in and barricaded himself inside. No one else has been injured since the police shootings, but the roof of the house where the suspect is believed to be is on fire. It is not clear what started the blaze, but firefighters are currently at the scene dousing the home with water.
The incident started when an officer with a year's service with the department stopped a white pickup truck in Fremont, which is about 40 miles south of San Francisco, police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.
The pickup truck backed up into the officer's patrol car, a person in the truck fired shots that injured the officer and the shooter and another suspect fled on foot.
Shortly after that officers from several law enforcement agencies flooded the area and searching got underway.
A while later, a Fremont police officer with about 10 years of service with the department was wounded in a shootout with the suspect, officials said.
Bosques told the East Bay Times that the officer in the initial shooting was in critical condition after surgery. The second officer remained in stable condition.
Investigators had ordered residents of the blue-collar neighborhood to remain in their homes and to call police about anything suspicious. Police helicopters were deployed and police dogs used in searching yard-by-yard and door-to-door.
Kelly said residents of the neighborhood can breathe easier now that the shooting suspect has been confined to one site.
"This is obviously a very dangerous individual. He has already showed a propensity for violence and a willingness to hurt two police officers," Kelly said.
He said the others were with the suspect when the shooting erupted, but just the single gunman was accused in the violence.
Kelly said the Alameda County Sheriff's Department has taken over tactical command of the scene while Fremont deals with its two fallen officers

Tennessee authorities said early Sunday that a police officer died after being struck by a vehicle following a shooting in downtown Memphis that left three wounded.
Memphis Police Department Director Mike Rallings said during a news conference that Officer Verdell Smith was pronounced from his injuries at 10:45 p.m. Saturday.
Smith, 46, was an 18-year veteran of the police force. He’s survived by a father, fiancé, son and two daughters.

Police said two people were in critical condition after being shot near a Westy’s restaurant at about 10:00 p.m. They said the suspect ran into a Bass Pro Pyramid and shot a male employee. The condition of the employee wasn’t immediately known.
Martin Norris and Jake Schorr IV, two Westy’s employees, told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that a man was talking loudly to himself, walked up to two customers who were sat at a picnic table in front of the restaurant and shot them.
Police said the suspect fled in a vehicle and struck Smith.
The unidentified suspect was arrested.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland urged the city in a statement to pray for Smith and his family.
"I am angry this morning -- angry at the senseless loss of a dedicated public servant, and angry at the absolutely unacceptable level of violence in our city," Strickland said. "We must not accept this as our norm. I most certainly will not, and I will continue to act to make our city safer."

An unidentified gunman negotiated with police from inside a parking garage into the early morning hours, telling police he was angered over racially charged shootings and wanted to kill white people, police said. He was killed when police sent a robot in to detonate a bomb he had, police said.
Police and federal authorities were working to determine whether more people were involved in what was the nation's deadliest day for police since 9/11.
"We're hurting," said Dallas Police Chief David Brown in a Friday morning news conference. "Our profession is hurting. Dallas officers are hurting. We are heartbroken. There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. All I know is this must stop, this divisiveness between our police and our citizens."
The protest was one of several around the country, prompted by police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota. Brown said the dead suspect told authorities he was angry about police shootings.
"He said he was upset at white people," Brown said. "He said he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers."
Initial reports said there was more than one sniper, but at the news conference, Brown indicated the dead suspect may have been the sole gunman. Although he told police he was "not affiliated" with anyone else, three others were being held.

Before he died, he had claimed that explosives had been set around the city, and much of downtown Dallas was locked down while police searched before determining there were no bombs.
"It's a heartbreaking moment for the city of Dallas," Mayor Mike Rawlings said. "I ask that everybody focus on one thing right now, and that is Dallas police officers, their families, those that are deceased [and] those that are in the hospital fighting for their lives."
Obama, speaking from a NATO summit in Poland, said America is “horrified†over the shootings and asked all Americans to pray for the fallen officers and their families. He renewed his calls for more gun control.
“There’s no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement,†Obama said, hours after a pre-attack speech in which he cited two racially charged police shootings earlier in the week and called for an end to bias in law enforcement.
One of the cops killed was identified as Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Officer Brent Thompson, 43. The others were picked off as they stood guard during the protest.
Three other DART officers were wounded, but they are expected to recover, Lyons said. As many as three city police officers reportedly were in critical condition.
Witness Carlos Harris told the Dallas Morning News the gunfire was "strategic. It was tap-tap-pause. Tap-tap-pause."
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement saying he has directed the Texas Department of Public Safety director to offer "whatever assistance the City of Dallas needs at this time."
"In times like this we must remember -- and emphasize -- the importance of uniting as Americans," Abbott said.
The protesters had gathered after a Minnesota officer on Wednesday fatally shot Philando Castile while he was in a car with a woman and a child in a St. Paul suburb. The aftermath of the shooting was purportedly livestreamed in a widely shared Facebook video.
A day earlier, Alton Sterling was shot in Louisiana after being pinned to the pavement by two white officers. That, too, was captured on a cellphone video.
Other protests across the U.S. on Thursday were peaceful. In midtown Manhattan, protesters first gathered in Union Square Park. In Minnesota, where Castile was shot, hundreds of protesters marched in the rain from a vigil to the governor's official residence. Protesters also marched in Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia.
Anti-police protests have roiled the nation in each of the last two summers following controversial police shootings, including the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and last April's death of Fraddie Gray while in custody of Baltimore police.
A Department of Justice investigation cleared the police officer who shot Brown, and, of the six Baltimore police officers charged in Gray's death, two have been acquitted, one's case was declared a mistrial and three more face trial.
The attack made Thursday the deadliest day for law officers since Sept. 11, 2001, when 72 officers died, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

A suburban St. Louis police officer was in critical condition late Friday after he was shot in the neck in what investigators described as an "ambush" following a traffic stop.
Ballwin Police Chief Kevin Scott said the unidentified officer was walking to his car after the initial conversation with the motorist he stopped for speeding Friday morning when that driver "advanced quickly" on him from behind, firing at least three shots.
The officer "had no chance at all" to pull his handgun and "was completely helpless," Scott said, noting the encounter was recorded by the police car's dashcam.
"Make no mistake: We believe during this investigation that Ballwin officer was ambushed, period," St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said.
Scott said the officer was in critical but stable condition, and "fightning for his life" at a hospital in Creve Coeur, west of St. Louis.
After the shooting, Belmar said, the suspect sped away before an officer from another police department spotted the car about 4 miles away. The suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot before being arrested about five minutes later, Belmar said.
Antonio Taylor, a 31-year-old black man who was paroled in 2015 after serving time on a federal weapons charge, was charged with assault of a police officer, armed criminal action and a felon in possession of a firearm, St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch said Friday.
McCulloch said there's no evidence of any dispute between Taylor and the white officer, a nine-year veteran before the gunfire. Scott said he "can't even begin to speculate" about a motive, including whether the shooting had racial overtones.
The shooting followed the previous night's attack in Dallas that killed five officers and wounded seven during a protest over the deaths of black men killed by police this week in Louisiana and Minnesota.
Citing his concern about the shooting and the Dallas tragedy, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon opted against leaving Friday for an eight-day overseas trade mission as planned and instead would return to Missouri from a Philadelphia event, spokeswoman Channing Grate said.

Taylor is being held on $500,000 cash bond and is expected to be arraigned on the felony charges Monday morning.

A Virginia police officer was refused service at a restaurant Monday because one of the cooks refused to serve her while she was in uniform.
Authorities said the uniformed Alexandria police officer was standing in line at Noodles & Company when the cook came out from the back and told the cashier, “You better pull me off the line, because I'm not serving that,†according to Fox 5 DC.
The department said the cashier and the cook started to laugh and the officer left the restaurant. Police Chief Earl Cook was upset and spoke to management at the restaurant Tuesday. The restaurant said it would conduct an investigation into the incident.
“Well your first response as a police officer is anger," Cook said. "These are very difficult times right now with our relations with everyone, and to have one of my officers treated in that manner unnecessarily-- your first response is anger, then you calm down a bit."
The restaurant’s management told Cook that the situation unfolded just as the Alexandria officer alleged.
“Noodles & Company expects the highest ethical and personal behavior from its team members. We value each of our guests and are committed to treating every one with dignity and respect. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination,†the company said in a statement.
“We are working with the appropriate authorities and local police association representatives to get to the bottom of, and resolve this matter as quickly as possible. We have made efforts to reach out to the police officer involved, but have not yet spoken with her. We will continue to look into the situation and will take the appropriate actions at the conclusion of this review.â€
In an effort to smooth things over, Alexandria Police Union rep Pete Feltham said the restaurant agreed to post signs on their doors to support police.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant who was shot while responding to a burglary call has died in hospital, authorities said Wednesday evening.
A suspect was taken into custody approximately 90 minutes after the shooting at an apartment complex in Lancaster, about 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
Sheriff's Department Executive Officer Neal Tyler identified the sergeant as Steve Owen, 53, a 29-year veteran of the department.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that another deputy was injured in the incident, though he had not been shot. The extent of the deputy's injuries and how he sustained them were not immediately clear. Officials initially said that both the sergeant and the deputy had been shot.
"It was a roll-up burglary call. It was a simple call," McDonnell said. "We don't know if it was an ambush or anything."
Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris told the Los Angeles Times that he knew Sgt. Owen well.
"This always seems to happen to the most beloved deputies," the mayor said.
Owen is survived by his wife, a sheriff's detective, and two adult children, Tyler said.
After the initial shooting, other deputies fired shots at the suspect after he tried to steal a sheriff's patrol car and rammed that vehicle into another patrol car while escaping.
Residents of the surrounding communities were told to stay indoors following the shooting and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department requested aid from surrounding police agencies. Several nearby schools were placed on lockdown and students at nearby Antelope Valley College were told to shelter in place.
SWAT units responded to a residential area near the shooting scene. Television news footage showed a man come out of a house and lie down in the home's backyard next to a pool. He was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect, described only as a parolee, had a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital.
Sheriff's office spokeswoman Nicole Nishida told KTLA that one person was in custody and no other suspects were at large.

A Missouri police officer who was gunned down early Thursday morning had previously been connected with the alleged shooter and officials said at a news conference they "wouldn't discount that this was an ambush."
St. Louis County officer Blake Snyder, 33, was shot and killed "almost immediately" after he approached an 18-year-old suspect in a disturbance case. The unidentified accused shooter was shot and wounded by a second officer and was in critical but stable condition at a hospital hours after the episode occurred.

Chief Jon Belmar said Snyder encountered the suspect sitting behind the wheel of a car. At some point, Snyder reportedly told the suspect he needed to see his hands.
"And then almost immediately -- shorter than it took me to say this -- he shot him," Belmar said.
The suspect had previously been charged with a felony, and Belmar said that Snyder was "part of that case," but didn't specify how.
Snyder was called to the scene in Green Park, a small middle-class community, at 5:04 a.m. when a man was reported to be banging on the door of a home, trying to get inside. Belmar said it appeared the man had some relationship with the people living inside the house.
Snyder was a four-year veteran of the force and was married with a 2-year-old son.
Officials said it was the first on-duty death of a St. Louis County officer since October 2000.

Two Boston police officers were “extremely critical†after a man wearing body armor and armed with an assault rifle shot them multiple times, police said Thursday.
Police Commissioner William Evans said the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Kirk Figueroa, fired at the officers late Wednesday night after they arrived at an East Boston home. Several other officers who were stationed outside ran inside and exchanged fire with the gunman.
"Domestic calls, as you know, are probably the most volatile. You never really know what you're walking into," Evans said. "And I think we see right now the dangers of our job."
The officers shot and killed Figueroa and then began giving the fallen officers first aid. Evans said one of the wounded officers was a 28-year veteran of the force and the other a 12-year veteran.
"One officer had his hand in one of the wounds and I think that was instrumental in getting the officer down to Mass General quickly," Evans said.
Both officers underwent surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital for serious injuries. Nine other officers were being treated at Tufts Medical Center for trauma, stress and minor injuries.
Police, initially concerned that there might be a second suspect, ordered residents to shelter in place. That order was later lifted.
Police did not identify the two wounded officers.
As is standard protocol following such events, the district attorney's office said there would be an investigation into the use of deadly force.
"They ran into a firefight here, able to pull two of their officers out safely, and again unfortunately, we had to take a life in doing it," Evans said.
Boston Mayor Martin Walsh joined Evans at the hospital. He asked that the community "pray for our officers."

A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Wednesday while he was responding to a civil disturbance call in Northern California.
Officials said a suspect was detained in the shooting death of 31-year-old deputy Jack Hopkins.
A video titled, "Deputy Jack Hopkins Procession†was posted to the Modoc County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page showing patrol cars riding down a street with their emergency lights. Hopkins was recently transferred from Alturas Police Department.
"He was probably the nicest man. When he pulled you over for a headlight, or something you did, he always was courteous and had a smile on his face. He didn't have a mean bone in his body, just a great guy. He is missed by all of us," Alturas Municipal Airport said in a Facebook post.
Officials were investigating the shooting of the deputy who joined the force last year.
This incident is the fourth death of a police officer in California to die in the line of duty in the last two weeks.
This shooting follows two Palm Springs officers who were shot and killed during a domestic disturbance and a Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant was killed while answering a burglary call in Lancaster.

Authorities in Iowa said that two police officers were killed in apparent ambush-style attacks early Wednesday.
Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek said at a press conference that authorities were developing suspect information and has nothing to immediately release.
“In all appearances it looks just like that, that these officers were ambushed,†he said. “It doesn't look like there was any interaction between these cowards and the officers they shot in their cars.â€
Des Moines police said in a news release earlier that officers responded to a report of shots fired shortly after 1 a.m. and the first officers to arrive on scene found an Urbandale officer wounded.
Des Moines police officers responded to assist and about 25 minutes later a Des Moines officer had been shot at an intersection about two blocks away.
Both officers died from their injuries sustained in the shooting.
“There's somebody out there shooting police. There is a clear and present danger to police officers right now,†Parizek said.
Parizek said he hopes to have a fuller picture of the suspect or suspects in the coming hours.

Two NYPD police officers were shot Friday afternoon responding to a home invasion in the Bronx, a source told FoxNews.com.
The two police officers were rushed to nearby Jacobi Medical Center. One officer was shot in the head and the other shot in the leg, according to the police source. The gunman was killed in the exchange, a source told The New York Daily News.

The body of the Pennsylvania gunman who police said opened fire on two police officers Thursday morning, killing one and injuring the other, was located with a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a home he was hiding out, CBS Pittsburgh reported.
The suspected gunman, Michael Cwiklinski, was found in the house in the town of Canonsburg, which is outside Pittsburgh. Authorities also recovered the body of a woman who was six months pregnant and had a Protection From Abuse order against the suspected killer.
State Police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka told reporters that the officers were immediately met with gunfire when they arrived at the scene at about 3:15 a.m. Bonderanka said the police were “ambushed upon their arrival.â€
The deceased officer was identified as Scott Leslie Bashioum, 52, according to the CBS report. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.
The scene was chaotic.
“It woke me from bed about 3:30, 4 o’clock this morning,†one neighbor told the station. “I could hear what I thought was firecrackers and then I heard somebody say, ‘My partner’s down,’ or something like that. A deputy U.S. marshal was shot and killed in southeastern Georgia Friday morning while trying to arrest a man with a history of targeting police, investigators announced, adding that law enforcement shot and killed the suspect.
Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers, 53, was part of a team seeking to arrest Dontrell Montese Carter, who was wanted on charges including attempted murder of police officers and domestic violence stemming from a September incident in South Carolina, the U.S. Marshals Service reported.
The team spotted Carter in a trailer in Long County -- but as Carothers was entering, Carter shot him twice, investigators said. The shooting unfolded at the Spring Creek Mobile Home Park, Fox 28 reported.
“The fugitive who killed Deputy Commander Carothers was extremely dangerous, wanted for trying to kill law enforcement officers and deliberately evading authorities. Pat is a hero and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and five children,†U.S. Marshals Service Deputy Director David Harlow reacted.
The team returned fire, hitting Carter multiple times. He died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Paramedics rushed Carothers to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, where he died.
Carothers was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service. He had served as the deputy commander of the fugitive task force for more than a year.
The Macon-based deputy marshal was wearing a protective vest, Monroe County Sheriff John Cary Bittick told The Macon Telegraph. “Those vests are not going to stop a rifle round,†he added.

Authorities in Texas were hunting for a gunman Monday accused of killing a detective after shooting him twice in the face while he was writing out a traffic ticket to a driver.
San Antonio police Chief William McManus identified the fallen officer as Benjamin Marconi, 50, a 20-year veteran of the force. Marconi was shot to death in his squad car late Sunday morning outside police headquarters, police said.
According to Fox San Antonio, the U.S. Marshals service took a “person of interest†into custody at around 9:20 p.m. local time but no further information was given on the person.
However, police said early Monday that the search for a male suspect was still underway and that no arrest had been made. McManus said he doesn't believe the suspect has any relationship to the original driver who was pulled over, and no motive has been identified.
"This is everyone's worst nightmare. You never want to see anything like this happen," said McManus, who then ticked off several other cities that recently had police officers targeted and killed. "Unfortunately, like Dallas, like Baton Rouge, it's happened here now."
Police released a still image of the suspected gunman’s vehicle speeding away from police headquarters and another image of a person sought "in connection with the shooting." Authorities were still looking through video footage to help identify the gunman. A reward of up to $10,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the detective’s murder.

Suspect in shooting of St. Louis police officer killed in shootout
ST. LOUIS • A man being sought as a suspect in the shooting of a St. Louis police officer Sunday night was shot and killed in a shootout with police early Monday.
Undercover officers had found the suspect's car abandoned at a parking garage at Laclede's Landing, police said. A woman had picked him up there and officers tracked their vehicle to the intersection of Smiley and Leola avenues in St. Louis. The suspect, about 19 years old, apparently realized he was being followed, jumped out of the car and fired a shot at the officers, striking the windshield of their pickup truck.
The suspect ran and officers pursued. He was killed in front of a house about 100 yards up the street, police said, about 12:45 a.m.
The suspect's identity was not immediately released. The woman was in custody.
He was being sought for questioning in the shooting of a St. Louis police sergeant about 7:30 p.m. Sunday near Hampton and Pernod avenues. A driver had pulled up next to the sergeant's SUV and opened fire.
“He was targeted because he was a police officer,†Mayor Francis Slay said at a press conference at Barnes Jewish Hospital. “He didn’t stop anybody. He didn’t point a gun at anybody."
Police said the sergeant, 46, had been shot twice in the face and was conscious. He was in critical but stable condition and expected to live. He is a 20-year veteran of the department.
The shooting in St. Louis comes on the same day that a police officer in San Antonio was shot to death while writing a ticket. Also, a police officer in Sanibel, Fla., was shot and wounded as he conducted a traffic stop Sunday evening. And late Sunday, a police officer and a suspect were shot during a traffic stop about 10:30 p.m. in the Kansas City suburb of Gladstone, Mo. That officer is expected to recover; no information on the shooter was available.
When police arrived at the shooting scene in St. Louis, the sergeant was sitting in his SUV, his seatbelt was fastened and his gun was holstered.
“He didn’t have time to react to this threat,†Police Chief Sam Dotson said.
A source told the Post-Dispatch that the sergeant said a car had pulled up beside his SUV and the officer thought the driver was going to ask him a question. Instead, the person in the car fired at the officer.
The sergeant did not get a good look at the shooter, the source said.
“The officer says he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the glass breaking in his window as the shots came through and struck him in the head,†Dotson said.
The police sergeant has two bullets lodged in his face, one near his nose, the other in his cheek, a source told the Post-Dispatch. The officer has three children and works out of the Second District.
When other police arrived at the scene, the sergeant’s SUV was in the left lane on Hampton facing south. Shattered glass from the driver’s side window could be seen on the street.
Police thought the car involved in the shooting may have been connected to a car taken in a carjacking Saturday in the Affton area, a source said. Police said the suspect in the Affton case also was being sought for questioning in a homicide Saturday in St. Louis. In that case, firefighters responding to a car fire found a man who had been shot in the head in the 500 block of West Poepping Street.
Dotson said it was too early in the investigation to say whether this shooting was related to the Affton case. The car in that case was tan; the police sergeant said the car that had pulled up next to him was silver.
Police were looking for a silver vehicle that may have gone east on Pernod. They also were scouring the area near Pernod for surveillance video, Dotson said.
“Fortunately, and for the blessing of God, the officer is going to survive tonight,†Dotson said. “But he was shot twice in the head, twice in the face.â€
He, too, asked for the help from the public.
“It’s not [just] a threat to our police department, it’s a threat to our community, our city,†Dotson said. “This officer was driving down the road and was ambushed by an individual who pointed a gun at him from inside of his car and shot out the police officer’s window. This just shows the dangers of policing, not only here in St. Louis but around the country.â€
All officers are now patrolling two officers to a car, he said.
The site of the shooting was by St. Joan of Arc School and a half block north of the St. Louis Police Officers Association Union Hall.

A Michigan college police officer was released from surgery and is fighting for his life after being shot in the head while on patrol near campus Tuesday night and a person of interest was arrested.
The Wayne State University officer was identified as 29-year-old Colin Rose, a five-year veteran of the department who works in the canine unit. Detroit Police Chief James Craig was on duty when he radioed to say he was investigating possible thefts of navigation systems from cars and SUVs, and was about to speak to someone apparently on a bike.
Officers who arrived on the scene found the officer injured on the ground, Craig said.
According to Fox 2 Detroit, DeAngelo Davis was named a person of interest in the shooting and was arrested but it wasn’t immediately clear whether he was the gunman.
The station reported that a $5,000 reward was being offered for the recovery of the gun used in the shooting. Deputy Detroit police Chief Steve Dolunt said the officer was not shot with his own gun.
A woman who witnessed the shooting told Fox 2 Detroit it happened while Rose was attempting to apprehend someone.
"The officer was trying to get him to put his arms behind his back." the woman said. "And I'm assuming he didn't want to and he just shot him. We heard one shot and we looked, and the officer was down."
"It was boom, boom, boom," Jacob Bolton, 20, who lives nearby, said in an interview later. "I heard some gunshots and I heard somebody hollering. But at first I thought I was dreaming."
The university's president, M. Roy Wilson, said Rose was recovering from surgery Tuesday night and that family members were with him but that he still had a tough road ahead of him.
"We just spoke to the surgeons and they just said he still was not totally out of the woods," Wilson said.
Shortly after the shooting, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., several dozen armed officers were seen in the residential area of Woodbridge within two blocks of the campus in what law enforcement described as a massive manhunt.
Wilson said they still don't know what the motive was for the shooting, "whether it was an ambush or something different."
He cited four recent incidents around the country in which law enforcement officers were shot, adding, "That's something that's crossed our minds."
Wayne State has more than 27,000 students and is located in the heart of Detroit. Wilson said the school employs around 65 officers, some of whom help patrol areas around the campus.
The shootings of police officers in Texas and Missouri on Sunday were the latest in what law enforcement officials say is an alarming spike in ambush-style attacks. A San Antonio detective was fatally shot, and a St. Louis officer was shot twice in the face but survived.
Police officers were also shot and injured during traffic stops in Sanibel, Florida, and Gladstone, Missouri, on Sunday night, but authorities have not suggested those were targeted attacks.
One-third of police officers shot to death on the job this year were purposely targeted by their assailant, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

A total of 60 law enforcement officers have died in firearms-related incidents in 2016, marking a 67 percent increase since 2015, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reported.
Citing a preliminary report from January 1 through November 23, the organization said that Texas has seen the most fatalities this year with 18. So far, 130 officers have died nationwide.
The worst single attack was in July, when a black military veteran killed five white officers at a protest in Dallas — the deadliest day for American law enforcement since Sept. 11, 2001. Ten days later, a former Marine killed three Baton Rouge, Louisiana, police officers.
San Antonio Detective Benjamin Marconi was the 60th officer shot to death this year, compared with 41 in all of 2015, and the 20th to die in an ambush-style attack, compared with eight last year, Craig W. Floyd, president of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, said.
An ambush-style attack does not necessarily involve someone lying in wait for police officers; it's any shooting designed to catch police off guard and put them at a disadvantage, Floyd said.
"There usually is an element of surprise and concealment involved," he said, and it's unprovoked.
Police have been killed while writing reports, like Marconi was, or eating in restaurants. They've responded to 911 calls, only to have people shoot them as they get out of their cars. And in the Dallas shooting, they were targeted by someone in a building.
"In all the cases, the officers were essentially assassinated before they had any contact with the suspect or placed that suspect in jeopardy," said Nick Breul, the Memorial Fund's director of officer safety and wellness.
This year's targeted killings are the most since 1995, Floyd said. In fact, Marconi's was the fourth targeted slaying of an officer this month: On Nov. 2, two Iowa officers were killed in separate but related attacks. And on Nov. 10, a Pennsylvania officer was targeted as he responded to a domestic disturbance.
The attacks on police in Dallas and Baton Rouge came amid protests over the shootings of black men by white officers, and were carried out by black gunmen — but race is not always a motivating factor, Floyd said.
In fact, he said, white men are responsible for most police slayings, and the majority of people shot and killed by police are white.
Some officers have been killed by people who identify with the so-called sovereign citizen movement, whose adherents believe they're immune to most state and federal laws, including paying taxes and getting driver's licenses. Gavin Long, the Baton Rouge shooter, had filed documents last year declaring himself sovereign.
The man who shot and killed the two Iowa officers earlier this month as they sat in their patrol cars had a history of contacts with police, including a recent confrontation with officers at a high school football game.
Others have been mentally ill.
"So much dialogue has centered around race relations, but there is a hatred in this country right now that's just gotten out of control," Floyd said. "There is a lack of respect for government in general, and the most visible and vulnerable symbol of government in America is patrolling our streets in marked cars."

Authorities determined that a stopwatch used as a timer in the fake bomb was sold at Walmart and they began searching stores where it may have been purchased. Authorities said that search led to video surveillance images of Dilligard and, in turn, Edwards.
The man told police he was part of the Black Panthers and the Black Mafia, Bridges said, but it was unclear whether he was actually affiliated with any group.
Court records weren't yet available to show whether Edwards or Dilligard had a lawyer who could speak on their behalf.

An Ohio State police officer was being hailed a hero for his quick reaction after killing a man a minute after he drove his car into a crowd and then stabbed multiple people Monday.
Officer Alan Horujko, who had only joined the department in January 2015, was responding to reports of a nearby gas leak when the suspect jumped a curb on campus at around 9:52 a.m.
Horujko ordered the attacker, later identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, to drop the butcher’s knife and then shot him when he didn’t obey the command, university president Michael Drake said.
"The officer encountered the individual by 9:53 — the subject was neutralized by 9:53," Drake said, underscoring how quickly events unfolded.
Director of Ohio State’s Department of Public Safety Monica Moll echoed Drake’s sentiments, saying Horujko is owed a debt of gratitude.
"He did a fabulous job today," she said.
University police Chief Craig Stone said it was fortunate Horujko had gone to investigate the gas leak at the same time the attack was unfolding. It helped him respond quickly to the attacker.
Artan, 18, plowed a small gray Honda into the crowd outside Watts Hall, an engineering classroom building. Two law enforcement sources told Fox News that Artan came into the United States as a Somali refugee, and was granted status as a legal permanent resident.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear, but law enforcement sources told Fox News the FBI was examining a Facebook post that may have been written by Artan earlier Monday. The post appeared to condemn U.S. military action in Muslim countries.
Mayor Andrew Ginther called Horujko an “outstanding young law enforcement officer.
“There has never been a more dangerous or complicated and challenging time to be a police officer, and we had a dynamic well-trained professional today save the lives of many of our residents and students," Ginther added.
Horujko, 28, was placed on administrative leave Monday and the investigation turned over to Columbus police, consistent with protocol for police shootings. Horujko appears to be an avid runner, with several half-marathons under his belt, according to online race results.
Gov. John Kasich praised the speed with which Horujko and other officers acted.
Kasich, a Republican, described the response as "an unbelievable, amazing and outstanding and heroic performance on the part of our first responders."
The university police department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. It has officers on the main campus in Columbus and on regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark and Wooster.

A Washington police officer died late Wednesday after being shot several times while responding to a domestic violence call, officials said, adding that the suspect was shot and killed hours later after a standoff.
Police said rescuers freed two children from the home where the unidentifed gunman had been holed up.
The male officer, who has not been named, was shot with a gun inside the home. The officer was pronounced dead at 9:13 p.m. local time after undergoing emergency surgery at Tacoma General Hospital.
"We've suffered a great loss and I think the community has suffered a great loss," police spokesman Loretta Cool said. "I don't know how to put that into words."
Cool said earlier that the neighborhood in Tacoma had been locked down while officers from multiple agencies were "working to bring it to a peaceful resolution."
Drivers were told to avoid the area and neighborhood residents were told to remain indoors.
The incident began at around 4 p.m. when two officers responded to the home after a report of a verbal dispute. Cool said the officers called for backup "a very short time later" and shots were fired almost immediately after reinforcements arrived.
It wasn't immediately clear what led up to the shooting.
The Tacoma News Tribune reported that several people inside the home were able to get out following the initial shooting, but it was unclear whether anyone else remained inside.
In a statement, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said he and his wife Trudi were sending their thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of the officer.
"All of Washington grieves with Tacoma, which tonight lost one of their finest. Our hearts are with the men and women of the Tacoma Police Department, their families, and their brothers and sisters in law enforcement across Washington."

Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32, was named as the alleged shooter by a spokesperson for the Albany Police Department, WGXA reported. Authorities consider Lembrick armed and dangerous.
"There are no words to express the pain and sorrow," Americus Police Chief Mark Scott said. Officials did not name the officers involved.
The officer who was killed was from the Americus Police Dept. Another officer from Georgia Southwestern State University had been placed on a Life Flight to a hospital in Macon, Scott said. Both officers had head wounds, WSB reported. Neither officer was named.
The shooting unfolded just after 9:30 a.m. at the Country Club Estates apartments. The Americus officer went to the complex on a domestic disturbance call and the GSW officer arrived as backup, Scott told WGXA.
“A shooting has taken place off campus near the south side of the Griffin Bell Golf Course,†a statement from GSW said. “Students, faculty and staff should remain in their present location until further notice.â€

Saraland Police say the suspect, Matthew Blake Richardson, opened fire at Officer Tucker when she got to the residence on Martha Alleyn Drive around 10:45 on Wednesday morning.
Officers were able to return gunfire and shoot Richardson, who was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to the hospital.
Officer Tucker is in “critical but stable condition†at USA Medical Center, where friends, family and law enforcement officers from across the Gulf Coast have gathered in support and prayer.

The Dothan Police Department leaders hoped the No Shave November fundraising initiative would raise $10,000 for Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Wednesday, Chief Steve Parrish presented a check to Children’s Hospital for $20,300 during the Dothan City Commission meeting.
“To have a community come together to do a fundraising project for Children’s of Alabama, and to provide an amazing amount, we are truly grateful,†said Carmen Bishop of the Children’s of Alabama Foundation after receiving the check.
Bishop said Children’s receives 10,000 visits annually from the Southeast Alabama area.
The fundraising concept came from Capt. Bubba Ott. Officers solicited funds from the community to sponsor relaxing departmental rules on beards and nail polish. The top five fundraisers are allowed to continue wearing beards or nail polish through the end of the year.
A Facebook component to the fundraising initiative allowed residents to vote on the most impressive beard. Sgt. Mac Eggleston took home the Facebook portion of the contest and also excelled in the conventional fundraising portion of the contest.

A Maryland sheriff's deputy was in critical condition but out of surgery Thursday morning after an early morning shootout that left a gunman dead, officials said.

Dfc. Warren Scott Hogan, a four-year veteran, was escorting a female previously involved in a domestic disturbance back to her house in order to gather clothing when a man inside grabbed a shotgun and fired at Hogan, the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
Hogan shot back, hitting the man, who was pronounced dead just after 8:30 a.m. at Chester River Medical Center in Chestertown.
The gunman's name was not immediately released.
Hogan was flown to Shock Trauma where he underwent surgery for unspecified injuries.
Maryland State Police were investigating the incident and a news conference was planned later Thursday morning.

Fox 35 Orlando reported Tuesday that Orange County Deputy First Class Norman Lewis was a big fan of the fast food restaurant – so much so that he visited an Orlando location one or twice a week for years.
The staff at this particular location was stunned by Lewis’ recent death. He was helping other Florida officers in a manhunt for 41-year-old Markeith Loyd, who police say shot and killed an officer who confronted him outside a Walmart on Monday. Lewis was killed in a crash while responding to the manhunt.
The restaurant decided to create a tribute for Lewis called the “Missing Man Table.†Photos show a white cloth on one of the tables in the restaurant with a meal, a Bible and Lewis' picture on top.
"I turned on the TV, and I couldn't believe it. I just started balling," Beth Ivey, a restaurant employee, told Fox 35 Orlando. "I can't believe I won't see him ever again. It doesn't seem real."
Lewis also frequented a gas station in the area and employees said they looked forward to seeing him every week.
Danielle Giaquinto said Lewis would give some of the employees giant bear hugs and huge smiles when he visited the station.
"I still can't even believe it," she added. "I immediately had a panic attack, because everyone knows how close I am to him."
Lewis was a graduate at the University of Central Florida. He played on the school’s football team as well.
The manhunt for Loyd is ongoing. Authorities raised the reward for the suspected cop-killer to $100,000 and confirmed the suspect likely has someone helping him stay one step ahead of law enforcement.

A cop was killed Monday in an officer-involved shooting outside Los Angeles that left another officer injured.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the two officers responded to what they believed was a traffic accident in Whittier when a gang member who was “all tattooed up†began firing.
They “think they’re there to help, next thing they know they have this guy shooting at them,†Lt. John Corina said.
Corina told reporters that the suspect was driving his car and rear-ended other cars that were waiting at a stoplight. The suspect then got out of his car and asked one of the people he hit to help push his car, he added. When police arrived, the suspect began firing, according to Corina.
The shooting happened around 8 a.m., police officer John Scoggins told the Whittier Daily News.
Los Angeles County Fire Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo said the suspect was treated for gunshot wounds. The two officers were taken to LA County-USC Medical Center.
The condition of the second officer and suspect is unknown.

A Maryland police officer was shot and killed Wednesday while intervening in a domestic violence dispute, officials said, marking the second police officer killed in the U.S. in just a 12-hour span.
The suspected gunman in the Maryland incident was killed following the incident, which reportedly involved a chase.
Prince George's Police Department announced the officer shot and killed was Corporal Mujahid A. Ramazziddin, a medal of valor winner. Ramazziddin is a 13 year veteran of the force.
NBC Washington reported the suspect shot at police from his car before officers were able to stop him. Officers apprehended the suspect before shooting and killing him. The suspect was not named but police said he had a history of domestic violence incidents.
Prince George's Police Department tweeted: "With broken hearts, we are announcing that one of our officers was shot and killed today. The brave officer was shot while stepping in to protect a woman threatened in a domestic situation. Please keep his family and our department in your prayers."
The Baltimore Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tweeted it was on the scene to assist officers. Thoughts and prayers from police stations around the U.S. flooded in following the announcement.
The death of the Maryland officer followed an early-morning murder in Alabama.
Justin Billa, a former Officer of the Month with the Mobile Police Department, was gunned down after a murder suspect barricaded himself in his Alabama home at around 12:30 a.m. The suspect, Robert Hollie, also died. It was not immediately clear if he was killed by officers or shot himself.
Earlier this month, the National Fraternal Order of Police's President, Chuck Canterbury, condemned a shooting in Ohio that left two officers dead and called on the country to do something about the increasing number of officers killed.
“When will our nation wake up and face that the steady increase of attacks on law enforcement is making all of us less safe,†Canterbury said. “Enough is enough!â€
Following the Maryland officer's death, at least 15 officers across the U.S. have died while on duty -- with 12 of those deaths caused by gunfire.

A Mobile Police Officer was shot to death and two others, including the shooter, are dead after a night of violence at a home on Avondale Court.
An outpouring of support has continued to come out after Officer Justin Billa was killed in the line of duty Tuesday night.
Mobile Police say officers responded to the area of Ridge Road West in reference to a female body found, later identified as 58-year-old Fonda Poellnitz. Police then quickly moved to pursue Poellnitz's ex-huband Robert Hollie at his home on Avondale Court.

Police say as they set up a perimeter, Hollie fired multiple shots out of his home with one bullet striking Officer Billa. Billa was transported to USA Medical Center where he later died.
SWAT was then deployed to talk to Hollie by telephone with the use of a PA system. After SWAT managed to gain entry, Hollie was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A Missouri police officer who was killed while responding to a 911 call Tuesday night had just returned to full-time duty to replace a recently fallen officer in his department, officials said.
Clinton Police Officer Christopher Ryan Morton's death comes after at least 20 officers have died in the line of the duty since the start of 2018.
Morton, 30, was shot and killed when he and two other officers responded to a 911 call at a home located 75 miles outside of Kansas City, Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Morton had been with the Clinton Police Department from February 2015 to January 2017. A man who said his son witnessed the deadly incident told FOX45 the officer tried to pull over the Jeep.

Authorities recovered an abandoned Jeep that was used in the killing, police confirmed to Fox News. The slaying marked the first time a female police officer was killed in the line of duty in the 148-year history of the Baltimore County Police Department.

Investigators had urged residents in a sizable swath of Perry Hall to stay hunkered down inside their homes and lock all doors and windows as officers search the community fringed with woodlands.
Three elementary schools were kept on alert status for hours, with students and teachers told to stay in their school buildings as police continued a search for the suspects. But by Monday evening, parents were allowed to come to the schools to pick up their youngsters.

Since the start of 2018, at least 36 law enforcement officers across the U.S. have died while on duty -- with 24 of the deaths caused by gunfire.
Roughly 135 cops died in 2016, making it the deadliest year for police officers in at least five years, Fox News has found (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/07/05/police-officer-deaths-on-duty-have-jumped-nearly-25-percent-in-2017.html). A Tennessee sheriff’s deputy was killed Wednesday and a manhunt was on for the gunman, officials said.
A Dickson County sheriff’s deputy got into an altercation with the suspect when the deputy responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in Kingston Springs, The Tennessean (https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/dickson/2018/05/30/officials-dickson-co-search-underway-suspect-incident-deputy/654927002/) reported.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect as Steven Wiggins. He was described as a white male with balding, brown hair. There was a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest, officials said.

An alert for an armed suspect was issued for residents in Dickson and authorities urged residents to contact authorities if they see anything suspicious. Video on social media appeared to show state troopers in tactical gear converging on the area.

Tennessee officials issued a Blue Alert in the manhunt for Wiggins. A Blue Alert is issued when a Tennessee law enforcement officer is injured or killed in the line of duty. TBI spokesman Josh Devine said it's the second Blue Alert that has been issued since it was created in July 2011.

Officials didn't officially identifiy the officer, but family and friends told The Tennessean that it was 32-year-old Sgt. Daniel Baker who was killed.
