We started out hot and all the sudden we can't buy a basket.  I'd like to see some damn offensive rebounds and second chance shots.  Oh well, still a half to go. WDE!

It's a win. 83-73. Looks like the possible score of the football game tomorrow. Does the committee think we're in yet?

Nice win over a team that made the tournament last year.  Once our guys found their groove it was fun to watch! WDE!

How did my man Bowers do tonight? Btw, I'm calling him the "Round Mound of Rebound"...regardless if that nickname has already been taken.

18 points.  17 rebounds.  Beast.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

Have to see them play a number of times but agree this is a fun team to watch. Two very good scorers with Harrell and Mason with a formidable presence in Bowers. Nice guard depth should prove a real strength into the schedule.

We are set up to be an up-tempo, dribble-drive, trap team. My best guess is as long as we can dictate the pace we can get around the absence of rebound help versus teams that don't really pound the boards. Auburn looks as if it could be a good free-throw shooting team overall so taking it to the rim and getting to the line will be a big plus.

The analyst working the game pointed out the lack of an assist man as a concern and while other teams might converge on Bowers attempting to slow him down in the paint and get him in foul trouble, the big man showed great body control inside along with some Barkleyesque open court ability.
Our other two scorers are simply going to get their points.

Shamsid-Deen plays very hard and I don't know how badly his shoulder is after diving with his weight having landing on the ball at his right bicep but we have good group of ball handlers to lean on while he mends.

Like our bench even though it was pointed out as a weakness several times during the course of the opener. All are capable of eating 10 minutes, offer something a little different and seem to realize their roles. Any of them can likely get several buckets which will prove a premium against the best teams in the conference.
IMO this Auburn team will be very competitive. I can imagine opponents flocking on Bowers but then our shooting guards are capable of scoring 25 plus each so it's sort of a mystery whether or not low scoring games will be in our favor. The ability to dictate the pace, steady defense (limit guard penetration) and bench scoring are my keys because I think at the core we can be very good no matter the opponent.

I fell asleep before we won but I was pretty impressed. Instead of caving and finding a way to lose, we pulled the first one off for the new coach. And Milwaulkee looks to be a decent team.

Truly it was about a ten minute interval and lack of defense that allowed Milwaukee to surge ahead.

Since I lead a much more interesting life than WT, I was out partying and had to DVR the game.

I've been watching this morning instead of actual football today, which is weird.

DOWN AT THE HALF?!?! DOWN LATE IN THE GAME AS WELL?!?!

#FIREBRUCEPEARL!!!

JK. But for reals, we were pretty ice cold from the field in most of that game. Shit was just not going in the bucket. Hope that was jitters and we see less as the season rolls on.

Prowler, I think you're free to call Bowers the "Round Mound of Rebound". The color guys were calling him "Round Mound of Rebound II". "Barkley-esque" was used all night.

Speaking of color, since I'm a gay racist, I noticed that Australian kid  Jack Purchase was the first white boy to get significant PT since, who, Scotty Pohlman? Not sure what was going on there with the personal foul that was reviewed for like 5 minutes.

Nice to start with a win, and I'm just happy to give a shit about basketball again.

Game 2 tonight against Colorado.  Set your DVR's as it will be a late tip off.

Quote
AUBURN, Ala. — Can't sleep? Then Bruce Pearl has something for you. Tune in to watch his Auburn basketball team play on ESPN2 at midnight, Auburn time, this evening at Colorado to see if the Tigers can start the season with two straight wins.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy, this 24 Hours of Hoops on the ESPN networks.

"I'm sure when ESPN called a lot schools and said, 'Do you want to go to Colorado and play at one o’clock in the morning Eastern Time?' They didn’t get a lot of bite," Pearl said. "But the big picture, I want our basketball program part of ESPN’s marathon. I want our basketball program to eventually become a part of some of the better holiday tournament.  You have to start somewhere. And the fact that we get Colorado to come back is a real treat for our fans because they are such a good team."

Colorado is favored, but the Tigers are buoyed by the fact they beat Milwaukee in their season-opener Friday, rallying from a 12-point second-half deficit to win 83-73. Veteran KT Harrell led Auburn with 20 points and two newcomers chipped in with impressive stats of their own. Antoine Mason scored 19 and Cinmeon Bowers had a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. But the victory came with a price, however. Guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen hurt his shoulder — it popped out and back in — and Mason suffered an ankle injury, though he played through it.

"We may be short-handed," Pearl said.

The Tigers weren't exactly a deep team, anyway, with nine available scholarship players before last week's win. Now, it's Colorado.

"Road trips do bring you together," Pearl said. "I love to travel with the team. Part of the college experience and being a student-athlete is seeing the country and even seeing the world. That Rocky Mountain high is going to be beautiful and it’s going to be snow-capped. For our kids to have that different experience, it’s part of the college experience."

This is what Auburn found when it landed Sunday: A Colorado team that returns all five starters, and 13 players overall, from a team that made the NCAA Tournament last season. Tournament experience? Colorado has it, having played in three straight NCAA tourneys. Auburn doesn't have a player who has been in one.

Still, the Tigers are ready, having gone through security and flown commercial to the game.

"We are going to try and win more and spend less," Pearl said. "There are times when it makes sense to fly commercial. We are not pressed for time going out because it’s a weekend for travel; we are pressed for time coming back because we are missing classes. We will travel out commercially and fly back privately. For us to be able to get the guys back early Tuesday morning to at least get them back in most of their classes."

** The non-conference match-ups against other Big 5 conferences are important. Scheduled these games to help the RPI. Auburn plays at Texas Tech Wednesday in the Big 12 challenge. "Historically for me, it mattered how our teams performed in those challenges."

** Pearl took this game without knowing the opponent because he wanted to be included in the challenge.

** Texas Tech has a young, but talented team. Tough backcourt players. "They're playing with a lot of confidence. Their one loss was at LSU in overtime."

** Antoine Mason practiced Sunday for the first time. Didn't have any additional swelling or soreness Monday morning. Not ready to play today but will practice. "He's still very questionable."

** Played 80 percent of season without Mason so far. Any time you get guys back changes chemistry, rotations.

** Mason's game based on explosiveness, power. "He needs to be closer to 90-100 percent to be effective."

** Malcolm Canada "played very well in Vegas."

** TJ Lang, who wasn't expected to be in the rotation, has improved with Mason out.

** Susceptible to foul trouble because of numbers.

** Likes how this team has demonstrated ability to bounce back from adversity. Really likes attitude and effort in practice, how they get along, push to get better. "My only frustration is thinking about this being KT's senior year and desperately wanting to make it better."

** Harrell put team on back against Oregon State.

** Bowers didn't have double-double against Oregon State, partly because they played a lot of zone. Expects to see zone against Texas Tech.

** Texas Tech guards do a great job driving and creating.

** It's a "great honor" going up against Tubby Smith. "I'm trying to do what Tubby did at Georgia and Kentucky."

** Huge game against Texas Tech for Auburn. Can be a big boost to RPI. "These are the games that put you in the tournament."

See...Pearl agrees with me...

In case you missed Friday's loss to Coastal Carolina.

Quote
Former Auburn coach Cliff Ellis, now at the helm of Coastal Carolina, returned to his old stomping grounds to a standing ovation, leaned down and kissed center court when he was announced right before tip-off.

And then Ellis stole one from Bruce Pearl and his old team.

Frustrated and trailing all night in the face of a tough Auburn defense, Coastal Carolina came roaring back with a second-half run and knocked off the Tigers 58-54 on Friday night.

"You know, right now, the last two days has been a lot, so I'm very tired, and very thankful," Ellis said. "I think it'll sink in how good this is a day or two from now."

Ellis' return came at the expense of an Auburn team that failed to finish off its second straight game and has dropped three of its last four.

This time, KT Harrell made sure the Tigers (3-4) got off to a good start, and at times carried the offense all alone on his shooting arm.

Harrell knocked down a career-high seven 3-pointers, missed just one from beyond the arc and poured in 25 points. His final 3-pointer gave the Tigers a 49-40 lead with 8:03 left.

"I'm confident in my abilities," Harrell said. "I've been in the gym so much on my own shooting that when I'm in the game, I don't think about it."

The way Auburn's defense was playing, the lead Harrell gave Auburn should have held. The Tigers limited Coastal Carolina (6-2) to just 34.4 percent shooting.

Even after the Chanticleers altered their defense to lock down Harrell following that final 3-pointer, Auburn had the kind of momentum going to win the game.

"We should have won the game," Pearl said. "What makes it a difficult loss is we had the game won."

The problem is inside. For the third straight game, center Cinmeon Bowers -- who came into the game averaging 13.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per game -- struggled, scoring just one point and pulling down five boards.

Without Bowers as a dominant inside presence, an undersized Auburn team pulled down just 22 defensive rebounds, and Coastal Carolina cleared 16 offensive boards, resulting in 15 second-chance points and negating all the 3-pointers Harrell hit.

Over the past three games, Bowers is averaging just five points and seven rebounds per game, rendering the Tigers almost exclusively as a perimeter team.

"If I had the answer for it, if he had the answer for it, we would have it fixed by now," Pearl said. "His preparation, his focus has got to change. ... We've got to figure out a way to unlock it. We're short-handed enough without him being so inconsistent."

For Ellis -- and a few members of Auburn's 1999 team -- though, the game represented a chance to close the loop, to show their support for a new regime at Auburn under Pearl.

Ellis is the last man to lead the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament.

Pearl is trying to become the next, and he has the former Auburn coach's full support.

"We've been kind of out of the picture for about 10 years," Ellis said. "We're here to help this thing get back. It's a healing, and we're going to do everything we can to help Bruce."

We are back to running a four corners stall. Less shots, less points and frustrating as all hell to teams that traditionally have multiple scorers that average in double figures. We only act like we care about a shot clock. Defense wins championships. Ball control, run the clock and War Eagle!

Tigers handled their business tonight by about 16.  Forget the score.  Loved the addition on Alex Thompson. 6'8" forward from right here in Dothan.  Played well. Trayvon Reed gave them some 7' presence and nice to have Mason back.

Yeah, I was pissed a couple of games ago, not because they lost but because the style of play was no different from the last decade.  Stupid passes, stupid shots, idiotic turnovers etc.  You deserve to lose by 20.  I can see that filling out the roster, getting Mason back and getting Bowers some help inside with Thompson and Reed can make this team much more competitive.

Now, they have one more legit OOC test in Xavier this week.  If they beat them, then they could improve to 8-5 going into conference play, given the other OOC opponents before Vanderbilt to start the SEC slate.

I was wondering how in the world is this team 3-9?  Here's a team that plays with the likes of Alabama State, Prarie View and Alabama A&M and they open the season with an OOC schedule that includes:

Indiana
Tennessee
SMU
Baylor
Florida
Gonzaga
Michigan State
Auburn
Kansas State

All on the road.  Cripes!!!

The Tigers open up SEC play tonight against Vandy, at Vandy.  Other than UK, I don't really know which SEC programs are the upper tier.  Is Vandy?

From what I have gathered in reading Gore's innerwebs, Vandy is probably upper-middle tier in the SEC this season.  They are 10-3 so far.  Young and tall is the word on the skreet.  If this game were at the Pearl Arena, I'd say Auburn's crowd should help get a win.  In that damn nightmare of a gym in Nashville; however, that will be a tall task, no pun intended.

I'm guessing we get our doors blown off in the first half only to make a nice charge in the second half and come up just short of a W.  Auburn hasn't won in Nashville since 1984, and I am not optimistic about that stat changing this season.

Jeeeeeeeeeeebuz this team is frustrating.  Lost by 12.  Got down 31-13 early.  Finally fought their way back to get it to 5-7 points a couple of times in the 2nd half.  BUT:

Way too many missed gimme' shots, like Ross-Miller's top 10 bloopers break away layup.

Way too many unforced turnovers.  Hey Bowers, you are NOT Charles Barkley.  Give it up to someone who can dribble.  I thought Pearl was going to run him out of the gym.

And most importantly...the stat of the night.  AU is BY FAR the worst free throw shooting team in the SEC.  And it cost them the game IMO.  At one point, they were 1-9 in the second half.

Their tenacious D got them back and kept them in the game.  They absolutely get after you on D.  They could have and maybe should have beaten this team tonight.  They just beat themselves badly.

Oh...and blow that God forsaken piece of crap court to smithereens.

Oh...and blow that God forsaken piece of crap court to smithereens.

Couple of other takeaways.

1) Make a fucking free throw.  Missed six or seven straight that would have been Commode momentum killers.

2) What the fuck with the offensive fouls?  Twice AU had momentum, the ball and a chance to make it a one-possession game.  Both times they drew offensive fouls.  The first came after they'd clawed back from 13 down (despite bricking every free throw off the garbage can on the second level hot dog stand) and trailed by five.  Drove to the basket, got a questionable charging call.  Panicked a little and before they got it back together were down by 10 again.    The second came after being down by 10 at 6:00 left and scratching back to just five behind with a minute left.  Hoop and harm called by one ref -- cutting the deficit to possibly two -- but was waved off by another who called a fucking charge.  On the next possession, Vandy scored to go back up by seven.  Pretty much over then when you're shooting 30% from the floor.

Score said 12, but it was really a five or six point type game.

Make a free throw.  Box a few people out and this team is going to win some games.

BUT..

It can't shoot less than 50% from the line, less than 40% from the field and get out-rebounded by 20  -- on the road -- and expect to win.

I will say the team I watched tonight showed me more flashes of talent and more heart than I've seen since the early Lebo years.  Yeah, it panicked a couple of times, hasn't learned how to step on an opponent's throat when things start to swing its way and doesn't quite yet know it can win any time it hits the floor.  But I could see it coming.   Will we break .500 in the SEC?  Who knows.

I think we can easily split with Alabama.

Beating A&M twice isn't a stretch.

We play Tennessee once, AT Tennessee and they'll want to break our dicks in half.  I'd say loss at this point.

Missouri, i don't know.  They're talking like we have no chance against them at home, but I don't believe that.  Can we beat them twice?  No.  Once maybe.

South Carolina, I don't know.  Does Steve Spurrier still coach them? They're improved. Play them once and at home. Hard to say.  Tossup?

LSU is a much better team than a year ago.  We seem to struggle with these kittens so pretend we lose both.

Ole Miss thinks they're hot shit after pushing Kentucky to OT.  Arkansas we only play once.  At home. We beat one of these. Maybe two.

Mississippi State once at home.  Not impressed. Win.

Play Kentucky on the road.  One and done with the Wildcats.  Fuck. Loss.

Florida is weaker, but we play those fucks just once and of course on the road. What bullshit is this? Why do we have motherfucking road games against Florida, Vandy, Kentucky and UT from the East? Why do we play Missouri and Georgia from the East twice, but Arkansas and Ole Miss from the West just once?  Who approved this abortion of a schedule?  Seriously?

So here's my thinking.

1-1 vs. Bama
0-1 vs. Vandy
Lose to Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, LSU twice
1-1 vs. the So. Carolina/Arkansas combo
2-0 vs. A&M
2-0 vs. the State of Mississippi
1-1 vs. Georgia
1-1 vs. Missouri (best case I guess)

That's 8-10.  Fucking gross.

But .500 is possible.  Sneak a win vs. LSU. Beat that shitty Alabama team twice. Pull off an upset against UF, UT or hahaha UK.

We get to .500 after the last lifetime of:

6-12
3-15
5-11
4-12
6-10
10-6
4-12
7-9
4-12
4-12
5-11
8-8
4-12
7-9
9-7
14-2
7-9
6-10
6-10
7-9
3-13
8-8
5-11
5-13
8-10
SONNY ENDS
2-16
11-7
9-9
13-5
8-10
12-6
8-10
7-11
SONNY BEGINS

God, that's awful.

Turn that history around?  Get to .500?  Build a Pearl monument on campus.  YICH.

Bowers is all we have down low.  Trayvon "This is his year" Reed is a tall drink of water who can create a few defensive problems occasionally but he's a complete non-factor right now.  Other than that, we have zero inside presence.  Speaking of Sir Charles earlier, I would love it if someone like that would take this guy under his wing and teach him how to be a wide body on the post.  Bowers has had some good games statistically, but last night was exhibit A on why he needs a ton of work on establishing some moves and most importantly, playing under control.

The second he gets his hands on the ball. he's a bull in a china shop.  If he gets a defensive rebound, he takes off down court like he's Michael Jordan.  It rarely ends well.  When he gets the ball down low on offense, he turns into a wild man and bulls his way to the basket.  No go-to shot.  No patented move.  Just get the frick out of my way.  Wild and out of control.  Calm this guy down and teach him a little patience and he could be special. Right now, he's special ed.

Pearl was not happy.

To me it's just fun right now watching Pearl coach these guys up.  It's nice knowing that we have a coach that knows what he's doing.  If he can't win here, it's Auburn.  I like that feeling.

Basketball seems to be more heavily influenced by recruiting than football.  Hopefully Pearl's enthusiasm, experience, and ESPN connections can land us a few big time athletes.  Get them here and we'll be tourney bound.

Yeah, we suck at free throwing, couldn't seem to get it in the hole and got few offensive rebounds. All fosho.

But, I must say I was pleased with our defensive effort and the fact that we had a chance. When we pulled within 5 at the end, take away our untimely turnover and it's down to the wire. Possibly, I mean. Vandy is the better team but we can be competitive this season.

We gotsta get better from the line. That's the biggest area we need to improve on, imo.

Smoked by 20 tonight.  Never in it from the start. Down 26-11 before the 10 minute mark of the first half and only once, for a brief moment in time did they get it back to 10 late in the second half.  Go Gatah in control all the way.  No threat.

Don't know the exact percentage but I believe we were shooting right at 20% in the first half.  UF was much more talented, athletic, longer etc.  but that wasn't the problem.  We had numerous good looks at the basket both from three and within 5 feet.  This team can't shoot.  Harrell and Mason will give you the occasional streak but consistently, this team is awful from the floor.

And the foul line?  UGH!!!!!!!!!!!  Holy poop, we're bad.  As I texted a couple of you...shoot even 40% from the floor and respectable from the line and this is a wild finish.  This team is more talented than recent years and they play hard from start to finish.  But....Holy damn we have no chance when we shoot like that.

Bowers.  I said it before. Please bring in Akeem, Sir Charles...somebody to teach this kid to play under control and have 2-3 "go-to moves" when he gets the ball.  Unlimited talent.  Just out of control.  He could be a 25/12 guy every single night if he'd just get it under control and have a plan when he touches the ball other than all out Tasmanian Devil mode.

Pearl is building something.  Unfortunately, this group is going to give us a few great moments but unless a miracle happens where they learn to shoot from the floor and especially from the line, we'll have to hope this next recruiting class brings a huge change.

If we were better at free throw shooting we would actually have been very much in the game with Gators. Same song, different team.

Have to hand it to them, they got within 10 or 12 late in the game. I had already conceded and we made a little run.

We're not in UF's league, yet. Hit from the line and we are.

Tough win against a nasty USCe defense.

Still play slow and sloppy early, sometimes looking like we're moving in slow motion, but they're showing flashes of really good things.

Lot of points off the line...shot close to 80 percent.  Defense was fantastic tonight.  Sold out venue with an electric crowd.   Plus Ronnie Brown and Caddy in da house.

From my scenario a couple of pages back...

Lost to Vandy and Florida, check.  I had that down.

Got a win over Mizzou, which I said we'd at worst split.  So we're there already.

Beat SC, which I called a tossup and said we'd either beat them or Arkansas.  Book it.

Right on track, it seems to me.

And missed shots from within 3 feet of the goal. And I don't know how many offensive rebounds we had but it didn't look like many. I don't know what the deal is with him playing further out so many times, toward the top.

We were down about 12 the best I recall, when he went Magic Johnson on that fast break, so it's not like he cost us the game. But, yeah, that was freaking awful. Esp since we seemed to be going on a little run.

I hate to say that I gave up and turned it off when we were 10 or 12 down with about 4 minutes to go but I did.

Also, I hate to break the news to some of you that we may not make the tourney this year but that is a distinct possibility.

I think that if we can ever solve our problem with getting the orange tinted round ball through the orange metal hoop, we will be in much better position to win more games.

I didn't read the stats but I think that I heard an announcer say we were 3 for twentysomething on 3's.

Our BB team is officially schizo.
Mason had a tremendous game including 8 boards and 5 steals.
He isn't so much a three point shooter but made 3 of 4.

We also took it to them on the drive and did well from the line 20-27, more chances than one would expect OTR.
Not many bench minutes logged but a game like this is encouraging.
Schizo has its good and bad days.

For all the joviality, that was a fun game to watch and it illustrates what the future is eventually going to be like.

About six minutes left I told my daughter LSU had one more run left and if we could survive that we'd win.  They did. Got up by one.  Then we hit a wild shot and pushed back.  Game over -- even if the refs did try to screw us with that asinine traveling call.

We played hard.  Didn't do well rebounding, had some possessions that were out of control but unlike past games we pulled it together and hung in.

I was happy with the effort.  Happy with the win. One more recruiting class and we are gonna fuck some shit up.

This.  Next year may be better but I still expect a struggle.  Keep in mind that really the only one of our starting 5 that returns is Big Head Bowers.  Akeem Sham-A-Lama Hussein Machmud Shadeen is a solid contributor and Jordon Granger has done some decent things recently.  After that, we're basically starting over with a whole new set of recruits.  Granted, these are supposed to be vastly more talented than what we normally get at Auburn, but still, they'll be freshmen.  Not Kentucky freshmen.  But, if they are as advertised and Pearl pays for...err...signs another class like them....said shift will indeed be F'd up.

Title: Re: Basketball thread
Post by: Kaos on February 15, 2015, 06:02:39 PM
Let's see how we're doing in my scenario from weeks ago:

1-1 vs. Bama  Lost one got a home floor game coming up so still possible
0-1 vs. Vandy  Duh
Lose to Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, LSU twice Lost to UF and UT, will lose to UK but already beat LSU so +1 here
1-1 vs. the So. Carolina/Arkansas combo Check
2-0 vs. A&M  Down 0-1 already after losing at home.  -1
2-0 vs. the State of Mississippi Fuck. Lost both, so -2
1-1 vs. Georgia Already there, possible to add one
1-1 vs. Missouri (best case I guess)  Already there, beat them once

So from what I best cased, we're overall -2.   Will likely be -3 after we lose to A&M on the road.  But could get back to what I hoped if we beat UA at home, beat UGA at home and beat LSU at home.  Beat Missouri on the road and we're a game better than I suggested.

Unlikely.  Losing two to the Mississippi schools and two likely losses to A&M hurt.

They do hussle but like you said, basketball meeting basket just isn't happening.

I agree on the hustle and missing Mason/MachmudRasheed. But this team just gets hammered on the boards every night.  Trayvon "This is his year" Reed is 7'2" and well....bless his heart.  I'm hoping he beefs up and toughens up by next year.  Maybe Attewe coming back will solve some of that.

How do you get a guy like that stronger? His bench press must look like a crane raising and lowering stuff. (small stuff)

Coach Pearl will be completely bald with this core returning. All exhibit extended periods (some in unison) of playing completely out of control. Hoping the power forward Spencer comes in ready for contact so Bowers will have a compliment on the boards.

Mason is going to have to play lights out because we have no consistent point production returning.
Even if he could average 24,25 points per game...where are the other points coming from?

Mason's light is out.  He's gone for the year I heard.

The out of control stuff really does frustrate me.  They can play well, but for stretches of the game it's like they decided to go out and play pickup games on asphalt.

But I bet he looks back and says DAYUM.

He has the players working hard and help is on the way. Several of the current players will fit in well with more talented players, we just have an all supporting cast right now.

You are mistaken.  First tourney win since 2009.  Wait.....what?

If anyone watched Pearl on the set afterwards, you got the warm and frickin fuzzies.  I've been critical of this team all year and I stand by it.  They have sucked with the best of em'.  But, I'm always happy for an AU win and this was nice.  But after the season they've had and the way Pearl was talking like this was round 1 of March Madness....you know it's going to get better...much better.  It's going to take a couple of years and a little more patience, but what else have we got as AU basketball fans?  I'm 100% behind Pearl getting it done.  Love this guy.  Large amounts of man-love.

When I see Bowers rumbling up the court like an out-of-control rhinoceros it makes me cringe.  It can be a four on one break and I still know that it's going to end badly. It will crash and burn with some wild, twisting shot that caroms off the backboard to half court or deflate with some bazooka pass that knocks the recipient down or collapse in a stumble, fall and turnover that goes right to the opposition.

On another note, I never saw so much as a score reported on al.com.  Won a tournament game over MSU and don't even get a mention.

I am hoping with the coaching up of Reed, this will be minimized for next year. Also, from what I remember, Pearl has a top 25 cruitn class this year. Has that ever happened at AU? Point is, with more talent means more competition. If Bowers is smart and wants to continue to play a lot, he will cut out the dump shit.

Quote
Spencer got to see first-hand how he could make an early impact. He attended Auburn's final home game of the season, a game the Tigers lost to Georgia, 64-41.

"It made me mad that I couldn't play," Spencer said. "I wanted to play so bad. I saw that I could help with rebounding, with the short shots and being an inside presence on defense."

He'll get his shot at helping Auburn next season, and Spencer intends to take it. He's been committed to the Tigers since August and plans to stay that way until April 15.

That's when he can make it official.

"I don't have any doubts about signing with Auburn," Spencer said. "None. The first day I can sign is when I'm going to sign."

He'll report to campus a month later.

"(My academics) are good," Spencer said. "I'll be in Auburn on May 25."

Good gosh, I hope so.

Right now Bower's is better coming from the bench. Has lost concept of team ball and even though he's a tremendous asset as a defensive rebounder, he's a liability with the ball. He cannot catch and shoot, dribble drive with touch around the basket or shoot better than 50% from the line. Waddell and Thompson picked up the slack last night.
Hopefully the staff can work with Bowers in the offseason.

Best thing they could do is hire someone like Akeem Obewonjalon or even Sir Charles to come in for a few days and work one on one with him.  Teach him to play under control and develop a couple of go-to moves instead of his one patented, "Bull in a china shop" crap.

No reason whatsoever for UK not to make the easy pass inside the entire game.
If they forego that to bomb from the perimeter they are laughing at us.

Well.

http://auburn.247sports.com/Article/Bowers-suspended-for-Kentucky-game-36181674

Quote
In a stunning turn of events, Auburn forward Cinmeon Bowers has been suspended for today's Southeastern Conference Tournament game against No. 1 Kentucky at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.

According to an Auburn release, head coach Bruce Pearl was "made aware of a potential rules violation" after Friday's 73-70 overtime victory over LSU.

Bowers, Auburn's leading rebounder and only strong inside presence, joins 6-foot-8 forward Jordon Granger in missing today's game. Granger is suspended after being ejected from Friday's game for fighting.

Without Bowers and Granger, the only available Auburn's tallest available players are likely to be 6-foot-8 sophomore Alex Thompson, 6-foot-7 freshman T.J. Lang and 7-foot-1 freshman Trayvon Reed, who has not played in the tournament.

I knew we were playing without Granger but I didn't get to watch today. Had a baseball game. So, when I look up the score after my game, I'm not surprised to see we lost by 24. But, finding out we were without Bowers surprised me in that I can't believe we kept it that close without him.

It was like they were playing prob one of the smallest teams they've played against without those 2.

I hope he didn't screw up too bad. Pearl seems to think it's minor.
Title: Re: Basketball thread

Watched the Pearl presser after the LSU game.  Said something that surprised me.  He was talking about motivating his guys and he said he told them he wanted them to believe they could beat anybody in this conference....except Kentucky.  Said we're probably the smallest team of anyone in a major D1 conference while UK is the biggest.  We played today without 6'7" Bowers and 6'8" Granger.  Not that Granger is really much of a factor as far as big men go and Bowers...well....damn.  But still, this team bought in and just playing UK that tough was something.

Help is on the way.  I'm actually pumped about next season.  If Spencer comes in and Canty is the real deal he's supposed to be....along with some really nice freshmen and the return of Attewe....Pearl may have us doing some post season shit...

Win without cheating
Win without having the absolute best players in the country

I like UNC as well, but guys like Coach K and Izzo are the kind of guys that get the most out of their players and they do it with class. I know UNC and Duke get their share of talent as well but Ky is on a whole other level of talent and height.

Coach Cal is a first class douche.  I hope one of those aforementioned guys or Pitino has something for his ass soon. Bought and paid for roster of NBA players who are taller than every nba team except Portland. Congrats, you win every game. Shocker.

I hear you. UK is going to be the black hats regardless of who they face and maybe the only teams that could hold up to the pressure against them are a Duke or North Carolina.

Arizona can trot out some athletic bookends if they can roll through this thing.

Love to watch Kaminsky play but I don't see him running open across the lane uncontested (as he so often does) against a team that can smother him with equal size like Kentucky. Not only that, they can do it with four players with multiple fouls to give all while they dead eye you outside from 15-20+.

Sure he does, but Mizz Terrah keeps 'em in her purse.  That's why he's so angry.  Like the alligator with no toothbrush.

My skreets say he sold his tickets, which is a slap on the wrist kind of no no.
