Baseball season has started and the Astros already suck. Lose to one of the (other) worst teams in baseball on Opening Day at home. Half their decent players are on DL. The rotation is full of no names plus a washed up, injured Mississippi redneck and a left handed midget.
Normally this is the time of year when I say "Hey! It's early! Lots of room for improvement!" But not this year.
This year, I am gonna go ahead and just write them off, anoint the Cards as div champs, Pujols as MVP and go have a drink or twelve while I wait for football season to start. I'll take my boss's awesome home plate seats when he offers them to me for free, and I'll go eat a greasy overpriced hot dog and watch some team destroy the Disastros. But Uncle Drayton will not be getting any of my ticket money this year. He sucks as bad as they do.
So yeah, it's baseball season.

But, on the bright side, my cubbies lost 16-5 on opening day. Zambrano needs to go back to the California Penal league or wherever the hell he came from. I think it's going to be a tight race to see who hits the cellar this season in the Central.

I honestly don't pay a whole lot of attention to the American League, and everytime I've heard people bitch about Angelos, I've taken it with a grain of salt, thinking they were just pissed about sucking, and playing in the hardest division in baseball. But the fact that he turns down help from Ripken really opens my eyes. What a fucking moron.
Since retiring as a player, the Ripken sons have been have served as ambassadors to baseball across the globe and bought a minor league baseball team close to Baltimore that is within the Orioles system. He has kept a keen interest on his beloved Orioles, and is trying to help develop players to bring the organization championships again.
He recently approached Angelos to offer his services to talk to some of the young Orioles stars, hoping to offer a mentorship in hopes to "finish off their development." He did not ask for a specific role, he only wanted to do what he was taught in The Oriole Way. To give back.
Angelos, widely considered the worst owner in Major League Baseball and one of the worst in all of professional sports, flatly refused the generous offer from a legend trying to help a team that has lost ten of the 11 games they have played this season thus far.
His reason was as moronic as his legacy of ownership. He did not want Ripken to receive any credit once the team became successful. What Angelos did yet again was put his ego ahead of his team or the Orioles fans who help keep his team from going under by paying money seeing a product not being afforded every opportunity possible to win.

I have said it before that Angelos is running that program in the dirt. He is the worst owner in MLB period. The Radiers fans have Al Davis, Orioles fans have Peter Angelos.

Do Bags or Biggio do anything for the Astros? I know that in Larry Walker and Mike Matheny come down to spring training every year. The Cards have been trying for years to get Matheny involved in some form, but he only does 2 or 3 weeks at spring training.
Funny story, after Matheny left the Cards, he was catching for the Giants. I was working out in SF that summer, and was watching the Giants game. Someone in the stands held up a sign that said "Mike Matheny is the toughest man alive." The announcers were commenting on the sign, at one point one of them said that if people were describing him like that, he's introduce himself like "Hi, I'm Mike Matheny, toughest man alive." A few innings later, Giants are in the field, pitcher throws the ball in the dirt, it bounces up at Matheny, who trapped it between his neck and shoulder. The announcer goes crazy "he just caught a fastball with his neck." The color guy, without missing a beat says "he really is the toughest man alive."

I know hes not particularly popular in bb ranks anymore but I think having McGuire around was cool. With or without roids - the guy knew how to slug evidenced by his rookie year. Plus - outside of bb, hes very respected in the community for his charity work and nice guy personality. I was happy when the Braves brought Pendleton back too. The O's are stupid for not including Ripken in some capacity.

Ripken said he would like to purchase the team back in 07 but Angelos never acknowledged him. I was really hoping it was going to happen but it didn't. I have seen videos of Ripken and read one of his books. His baseball knowledge is unreal. He has so much more of a mental game than anyone I have ever seen or heard. The detail he pays to even the smallest of things is just amazing.

Those are always the best guys to watch play. You learn so much from the little things they do. Next time you watch the Cardinals, pay attention to the non-batting things Pujols does. How he runs the bases, how he plays defense.

Both are also still a part of the Astros in Action Foundation and are loosely affiliated with the organization still. They may show up at spring training or at batting practice, but they don't have active day to day roles that I know of.
However, Biggio is an unpaid assnt coach at St. Thomas High School, where his boys play, and he spends most of his time there. He even does the groundskeeping for the baseball fields... amazing. Biggio also remains very active with his Sunshine Kids Foundation.
Baggy is some sort of consultant with the team, but he spends most of his time at his home in Cabo San Lucas or playing golf. The way he went out with the whole injury/insurance claim thing was a bit bitter for some people in Astros management to swallow, I guess.
Obviously, the fans, myself included, love them and miss them both terribly.

Different situations. I would argue guys like Ripken have a lot more to study and think about during a game. Pitchers have to know hitters and what pitches to throw in what situations. They also lean on their catcher for pitch calling. Fielders have to know hitters, if they push or pull, how they tend to hit with runners on base, in scoring position. Most pitchers aren't hitters either. Players like Ripken also had to study the guys they were facing and what they tended to pitch.

The other two times we were working in philly and made the trek down I-95 for a few weekend games. I don't know where college park is at. Phillies fan tasered at Monday game
PHILADELPHIA — A police officer used a Taser gun to apprehend a fan who ran onto the field during the Cardinals-Phillies game Monday night, and the home team and the police are investigating whether it was an appropriate use of force.
The fan, wearing a baseball cap, red Phillies National League Champions T-shirt and khaki shorts, hopped a fence and scurried around the outfield, eluding two security officers as the eighth inning was starting against the Cardinals.
One officer used a Taser and the fan went down in a heap. Several Phillies placed gloves over their faces and appeared to be stifling laughter at the wild scene.
A Phillies spokeswoman said the police department is investigating the matter and discussing with the team whether using the stun gun was appropriate.
Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore told The Philadelphia Inquirer police internal affairs will open an investigation to determine if the firing "was proper use of the equipment."
Vanore was not made available to The Associated Press when a call was placed to the police department's public affairs office late Monday night.
The teams said it's the first time a Taser has been used by police to apprehend a spectator who ran onto the field.
The fan was 17-year-old male, and he will be charged with criminal trespass and related offenses, the team said.
The Phillies did not release his name because he is a juvenile.

For the time being. The good thing about the Braves right now is their pitching looks like it can keep them in it throughout the season. Hudson, Lowe and Hanson are normally going to give you quality starts. They just had too many guys get off to horribly shitty starts like Chipper, Glaus, Escobar and McClouth....while guys like Heyward and Prado were doing things you really didn't expect.
I still look for the Phillies to get it all together and just hope the Bravos can stay in the wildcard.

Apparently, he's been taking it real serious and has put some hours into adjusting/readjusting the lineup, prepping for the game, etc. I'd say the NL is the underdog...but they have a shot. Both teams are putting out some serious pitching talent as well...it is the Year of the Pitcher, after all.

My favorite part of last night was when Byrd was having a battle with Jose Valverde (in the 8th, maybe? I was a few deep at that point)...that pitcher had incredible stuff and he kept fouling them off and they were smiling at each other in recognition of what was taking place. Of course, the Cubbie struck out to end the inning. Kudos to Byrd, however, for his awesome defense in the 9th...I'm glad it was Ortiz on the basepaths but it might have not mattered.

Major League' Actor James Gammon Dies at 70

LOS ANGELES -- James Gammon, the gravel-voiced actor who played the manager of the Cleveland Indians in the 1980s comedy "Major League" and had a host of other movie and TV roles, has died. He was 70.
His agent, Merritt Blake, said Monday that Gammon had cancer and died Friday at his daughter's home in Costa Mesa.
The craggy-faced actor also played the father on the Don Johnson TV show "Nash Bridges."
In addition to dozens of TV and movie appearances, Gammon was a noted stage actor who co-founded the MET Theatre in Los Angeles. Gammon starred in several Sam Shepherd plays, receiving a Tony nomination for his work on a 1996 Broadway production of "Buried Child."
Gammon is survived by his wife, a brother and sister, two daughters and two grandchildren.

CHICAGO(AP)—Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the season, ending a storied and often colorful career that included 18 years in the majors as a player and another 22 as a manager.
The 66-year-old Piniella said he was looking forward to spending more time with his family.
“I’ve grown to love the city and the fans but at my age it will be time to enter a new phase in my life,” Piniella said in a statement released by the team.
Announcing his retirement now, Piniella added, gives the team time to find a replacement.
“I’m proud of our accomplishments during my time here and this will be a perfect way for me to end my career,” he said. “But let me make one thing perfectly clear: our work is far from over. I want to keep the momentum going more than anything else and win as many games as we can to get back in this pennant race.”
The Cubs said Piniella will retire as the 14th-winningest manager in major league history.
Piniella is in the fourth and final year of his contract with the Cubs. After leading the Cubs to consecutive NL Central titles in 2007-08, Piniella and his team missed the playoffs last year and have struggled again this season with a new owner, the Ricketts family, in charge. The Cubs have gone 102 years without a World Series title. :haha:
Piniella led the New York Yankees (1986-88), Cincinnati (1990-92), Seattle (1993-2002) and Tampa Bay (2003-05) before arriving in Chicago. He won the World Series as a manager with Cincinnati after winning two as a player (1977-78, Yankees).
A right-handed outfielder, Piniella was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1969 after batting .282, 11 home runs and 68 RBIs with the Royals. He was traded to the Yankees in 1973 and ended his playing career with New York in 1984.
Piniella trails only Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre in victories among active managers. His World Series title with the Reds in 1990 was the first for the team since 1976. Piniella was at perhaps his most successful as manager of the Mariners, piling up 840 wins and four postseason appearances in 10 years.
The Cubs brought in the fiery Piniella in 2006 to replace Dusty Baker. Went to bathe the kids. Came back, and apparently the wheels had come off the already limping Redbird pitching bus. I just sat there with my jaw on the floor while the pitcher (not sure which one, there were so many!!) just walked in a run with BL... that kid Sanchez was a home run away from hitting the cycle! The last Card pitcher of the night was the only pitcher in the last two games to get off the mound without the Astros scoring a run on him.
We could have scored again on that one hopper up the middle in the 7th, but our announcers said we had invoked the mercy rule... have never heard that applied in MLB. And even funnier - it was applied to the Astros as the invok-er... not the invok-EE!!
They are on a 7 game winning streak - longest currently in MLB.

This includes the delicious Fenway Frank with peppers and onions that I used to soak up the 40 beers I drank that night. I highly recommend it if you're ever up here and haven't been. And if your tickets suck...there are no ushers, so you can move around to vacant seats until you finally find a pair where you can sit back and admire the green monster for what it really is.

Fenway is nice, but I thought the seats too damn close. At 6'4", I had a hard time fitting. Still a must see if you've never been. The time I went, it was the week Ted Williams died, and they had all kinds of stuff up for him.
Of the new parks, PNC Park in Pittsburgh is my favorite. They nailed all the little things there. Clemente was number 21, and the right field wall is exactly 21 feet high.
AT&T Park (SF Giants) has PBR on tap, but there's something wrong about paying 8 bucks for a PBR. However, they also have a Gordon-Biersch there, and yes, they have garlic fries on sale.
