Title: Auburn Baseball 2017
Post by: Snaggletiger on February 10, 2017, 12:22:10 PM
Haven't read anything on them so far but in looking at their roster and some of the bio's, it does appear they signed some bad ass freshmen, especially pitchers.  The schedule:  Suck!

18 straight home games to start the season against teams like Holy Cross and Presbyterian and UAB and Lipscomb and George Washington.  There are a couple of games against GT sandwiched in the conference schedule but otherwise, the OOC slate is fairly putrid.  Maybe they're just trying to get a bunch of wins (No guarantee there) and get some confidence since they open the SEC against Florida.  Yeesh!

The Bama series is at home this year so there's that,  Anyone been studyin' up on our beisbol Tigers?

So, the one piece I just read says that after a 22-33 (8-22 SEC) slate in 16', the SEC coaches voted Auburn to finish tied for last in the West and 12th overall.

Okay, so expectations won't be a problem.

With Jay Jacobs at the helm of athletics there's always a chance we'll suck beyond the telling of it but we will have garish scoreboards and decor.

actually plan on hitting one of next weekends games. Coach Thompson is one I am really rooting for here. Great guy, great recruiter, has some history here, does things the right way, has a huge amount of respect in the sport from lots of people.

Attended this one with the kiddos. Was a great atmosphere and fun day at the park. Was surprised how packed it was.

George Washington was actually a solid team.

Didn't really notice the improvements all that much. Only because I had read about them ahead of time. But that stadium was already nice to me so no big deal there.

Lipscomb avoids the sweep with a 8-7 win in 10 innings today. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then Auburn roared back with a 6 run 6th but couldn't hold on late.

The record falls to 9-3 with the loss.

They play South Alabama Tuesday night, Kennesaw State (another proverbial thorn in our ass) Wednesday night, followed by a weekend series against Presbyterian.

While some of you Daisy Duke shorts wearing Luke Bryan loving donut punchers were beating off to shitty concerts, Auburn played a couple of baseball games.

South Alabama took us behind the woodshed last night and delivered a 14-3 ass whipping.

We rebounded today by beating Kennesaw State 6-4.

The record is 10-4 with Presbyterian coming to town for the weekend series.

Update.  Apparently, we got our Blue Hose whipped in game #1 but came back with 4 in the 8th to win 7-5 over mighty Presbyterian.  The win makes us 11-5.  Looks like a couple more games before conference play starts against Florida.

Honestly not looking for much....again.  Winning at a 2-1 clip against the weakest pre-conference schedule in recent/ancient memory.  I haven't watched one pitch and know very little about this club but most signs point to another thanks for playing season.  Not to be Waaa Waaaa Debbie Downer but 11-5 against teams called Blue Hose and Samford and Holy Cross and Kennesaw....

AU's Guy Tigers get their second straight shutout with a 4-0 win over the Dragons of UAB. They'll take a 13-5 record into their matchup with Jacksonville State today.  They start SEC play with a bang Friday, a weekend series against #5 Florida.  UF is also 13-5 at this point with a some uncharacteristic losses.  Maybe a good thing to get them early and take a couple of games.  That could really give this team a lift.

Go look at some of the other conference teams schedules so far. I've seen quite a few of them lose to teams I didn't even know existed. "Georgia baseball drops another one 12-2 to sacred mother of the east vestibule".

Do what?

I think I saw either Bama or uga get smashed by Rider last weekend. So doesn't make me feel as bad about dropping one to Samford or the blue hose.

That would called, "Pretty dang skippy".

16-5 and taking a series against #5 Florida should get you noticed.  I openly said earlier that I didn't expect much from this club.  If I'm wrong, and I sincerely hope I am, then I'll cook up some crow any style you like and humbly serve myself a healthy plate full.

About Georgia, the next conference opponent. They played LSU this past weekend. The dawgs gave up 34 runs in the series (22 in Friday night's game alone), walked 21 batters and hit 12 with pitches.

Every team has a bad night or series. Those stats indicate more than "a strange hop here and an untimely hit there," these numbers say "Hello, is this Hoover? Great. We just want to let you know that we won't be able to attend your tournament this year."

We "should" make it out of Athens Sunday sitting at a sexy 6-0 in conference play. Baseball can be a fickle sport though.

That would be a huge turnaround for the beisbol Tigers if it does somehow happen. This is normally the point of the SEC season where we start trying to figure out how they can recover from an 0-6 start and still make the tourney.

Would love to go this weekend. Definitely would if at all possible. Like the heart we play with but our bats aren't very strong.

We don't do the long ball much and hit into a lot of double plays. Makes me wonder about our hitting coaching. But Butch seems to have us improving.

8th win in a row, which is the longest win streak we've had since 2009.

Also, I saw BEFORE the game last night we were off to our best start at this point in the season since 2003. Not bad considering our schedule is very top heavy this year, having played then #5 Florida and now #6 SC. Georgia wasn't soft either.

The area where my testicles should be, just tingled.  If they take a game or two from the Faggies, we're talking, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and TA&M to start the season.  There's no tougher stretch in all of college baseball.  Throw LSU in the mix and it might be the toughest stretch in history.  War Damn!!!!  I'm 100% happy to be 100% wrong right now.

Okay, this shit is getting real.  We sweep Florida. (Screw Georgia) Take a series from the GamePenises and now go out to Faggie Land and hold them to 1 run?

I say again.  I had zero expectations. Less than zero.  Another re-tooled roster.  No names. No success in years.  And now this team is playing as well as anybody in the country.  Nobody...and I mean nobody, is going to whip some Florida, Georgia, USCe and Texas A&M ass, all in a row.  With a big non-conference bitch slap to Bama sandwiched in between.

Not at all. Keegan pitched a great game tonight for the fellers, but our bullpen is an Achilles heel for this team.

I don't know what to think about the ladies. There's some bad medicine affecting them.

The SEC is off the charts good.  We definitely lost some key offensive players off last year's club.  The key, to me anyway, is getting past SEC play/tourney and getting into regionals against programs outside this conference.  They may find themselves back in the World Serious again.

Hopefully, the line up adjustment will strengthen our ability to win series between our remaining SEC foes.  I think we're one good pitcher away from being a Top 5 team and playing in the College World Series.

And one good hitter away too!

#10 Auburn blows past Kennesaw State on the road tonight 15-7. A 12 run 4th inning, which included the first grand slam I can remember in a while, helped get the offensive fireworks going. We went into the 9th with a 15-2 lead, but our bullpen surrendered 5 runs before closing it out.

The SEC leading Hogs come to town for the weekend conference series. If we take this one, my pecker will be so hard that a cat couldn't scratch it.

The one thing that stands out about this series is the production against a damn good team.  Friday night was 15 runs on 15 hits.  Today was 11 runs on 16 hits.  Keep up a pace anything close to that and this team makes major post season noise.

14 games remaining.  2 OOC games against Troy (Mentioned above) and UAB late.  From there, it's four 3-game series.  MSU on the road. Bama at home.  LSU in Baton Rude and then Ole Miss to finish it off. .500 ball will get us to post season beyond the SEC Tourney. I think we do much better.  Definitely a change in my thinking and expectations.

Not too shabby for a team picked to finish dead last in the conference.

We've lost 1 series all season - to the Aggies in College Station - and have 4 series left. If we win 3 of these 4 series, we should be in great shape to host a regional.

Co-Player of the Week
Josh Anthony, Auburn

Auburn's Josh Anthony batted a robust .688 (11-for-16) with three doubles, one homer and nine RBI on the week, also scored six runs and was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases as Auburn posted a 3-1 record.

Anthony had multiple hits in all four games including three Friday and a career-best four Sunday in the series clinching victory over No. 16 Arkansas.

He batted .750 (9-for-12) in the series win over No. 16 Arkansas with three doubles, one homer and seven RBI while raising his batting average nearly 40 points from .259 to .298.

Auburn junior outfielder Jonah Todd has been named SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Todd batted .571 (8-for-14) last week and helped lead the Tigers to a series win at top-10 Mississippi State. He had a career-high four RBI in the doubleheader lid lifter with the Bulldogs on Saturday and recorded four hits in seven at-bats and reached base eight times in the doubleheader sweep.

The Birmingport, Ala. native finished the week with five runs scored, four RBI and one stolen base.

Todd ranks second in the SEC with a .396 batting average on the season. He’s driven in 29 with 13 doubles and seven stolen bases.

He is the fifth Auburn player recognized by the SEC in 2017 joining Keegan Thompson, Will Holland, Davis Daniel and Josh Anthony.

We hit the road to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tiigers for the weekend conference series.  Game 1 is Thursday night.

32-18 (14-10)

Game 3 is in the bottom of the 6th and our Tigers trail 6-0. I need to start packing for my 2 week trip to Alberta in the morning, so I'm going to go ahead and call this one as our 7th straight loss.

32-21 (14-13)

One of you fuckers pick up our sweep from Ole Miss next weekend and 1st round loss in the SECT the following week.

Tigers will face loser of Miss State/Arkansas today at 4:30 CT / 5:30 ET

Watched it until the right fielder wussed out on a ball he should have taken and the 2B let it fall for a two base error.  Then an unearned UF run followed.

After that?  I went to sleep.  Woke up just as the loss was being gifted.

I didn't like our uniforms.  Looked like a rec league softball team.

This one stung a little bit, but this was a successful season.  We were predicted to finish next to last in the west and didn't have much other than two starters and an improved D.  We were scrappy and Butch did a pretty damn good job with the pitching staff and developed them nicely.  We were one win away from playing in a super regional and possibly hosting a super regional if Sam Houston State won their game.  I am excited about what Butch can do.  Drastic improvement from last year.
