The official spin from an Auburn beatwriter.

Quote
the claims made against Sexton were about his dad meeting 1 time with Rashan Michel and Marty Blazer. There was no accusation about payment to Sexton's father, as is the case with Wiley and Purifoy, or that Sexton knew anything, which is the case with Purifoy.

Pearl said earlier yesterday that they were both going to stay enrolled at Auburn and were going to continue practicing with the team.

I don't know if that still stands after the NCAA decision or not.

I don't really understand how they couldn't. I mean we are talking about PRACTICE!

I feel cheated. This would have been hands-down the best Auburn basketball team of my life, with a damn good shot at actually winning a basketball National Championship and that has been taken from us.

Not even close...

The Chris Porter, Doc Robinson, Scott Pohlam, Mamadoo, SMith, and Fishback team was fucking awesome...

Watch this starting from about 2:00

I was at this game and the Alabama game that year when Auburn won by like 50. The coliseum was rocking that year. It was like this almost every game. They were so great.

This man knows.  Best AU team maybe evah.  You have to consider the make up of this team.  It was the consummate college formula.  Perfect point guard in Doc Robinson.  Handle it, dish it, shoot it...  7' foot big man inside with Mamadoo Enzyme.  He could score, rebound, block shots...  Outside sharp shooters in Pohlman and Smith.  All around slashers, dunkers, creators in Porter and Fishback.

When they got it going, they were as good as anybody in the nation.

I was in high school at the time, but made several trips to Beard Eaves to watch that team. They were indeed awesome.

That team went 24-10, 9-7 in the SEC. Made it to the second round of the tournament.

Hell, we made it deeper into the tournament a couple years later in '03.

We're currently 16-1, 3-0 in the SEC with 15 more to play in the regular season. I think odds are in our favor we win more than half of those.

And again, I'm not saying this current team we have is the best of my life. I'm saying if we had Wiley & Purifoy I think they would be.

I'm talking about the team that was a number 1 seed and got beat by Ohio State. You are thinking about the year after.

Yeah, my bad. But yeah, still made it to the Sweet Sixteen just like 03.

We made it to the Elite Eight in 86, ironically, with Person.

Went to the Montgomery Airport to welcome that team home.  Not a guy over 6'8" but they were the quintessential Sonny Smith team.  Thick bodies.  Out-rebounded every damn opponent they faced.  Had Sir Charles stayed, they would have been Final 4 without a doubt.

Jeff Moore at 6'7" and about 260 and Chris Morris at 6'8" and could jump out of the building.  They were the the shizznit.

That the one where they booed the shit out of that cocky white guy from bama who made some dumb statement before the game? If so I was there. Student section. I think that was my last game as a student. And yes it was wild.

The best five players Auburn ever had in the tournament came in 1987.
Sonny Smith got us to the second round of the midwest against Bob Knight's deep and talented Indiana squad. We were dominating in the first half of a very physical game until halftime when Knight came off the floor in one of his tirades which continued on the floor into the second half.
Sonny only watched as the intimidated referees continually called cheapie touch fouls which turned the game in dramatic fashion. Never forgave Smith for not standing up for his team.

Gerald White 6-1 PG
Frank Ford 6-4 SG
Mike Jones 6-7 PF
Chris Morris 6-8 SF
Jeff Moore 6-6 C

Johnny Lynn
John Caylor
Derrick Dennison

The team we now have has better quality depth, plays extremely well together like that 1986- '87 team and best of all... everyone returns that presently sees playing time.
That means we return 10 ballers with Wiley next season. Just something to keep in mind.
