AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn announced the suspension of two players moments before Tuesday night's exhibition and then watched as starting point guard Varez Ward suffered an ankle sprain in the second half.

The Tigers beat Paine College 86-60 after building a big lead in a dominant first half.

But Tuesday's biggest news centered on the suspension of senior guard Tony Neysmith and sophomore guard Josh Langford and the injury to Ward.

The indefinite suspensions for a violation of team rules were announced about an hour before the game. Neysmith was a reserve who was expected to play sparingly, but Langford would likely have been an important player off the bench.

Ward injured his ankle while diving for a loose ball. He immediately grabbed for his left foot and grimaced in pain. After going to the locker room for treatment, he watched the rest of the game from the bench with an ice pack on his left ankle.

It was not immediately clear whether the injury would keep Ward out of any games.

Auburn has a final exhibition Saturday against Victory University before opening the regular season Nov. 11 against McNeese State.

While Ward and fellow starting guard Frankie Sullivan (3 points) had quiet nights, Auburn got ample production from sophomores Chris Denson (21) and Allen Payne (12).

Sullivan fouled out after only 19 minutes, but Denson ended the first half with back-to-back 3-pointers and then continued scoring after halftime.

Auburn out-rebounded Paine 47-30 and had 19 assists against only nine turnovers.

Payne is a historically black private college in Augusta, Ga., that competes in NAIA Division II.
