I'm currently on day 5 of my 70 day summer vacation, and I'm already bored.

Next week, we go to Orange Beach for a few days.  I'll go to Nashville for a week in July.

But other than that, I'm just sitting here on the internet.

What is there to do around Alabama?  Cool small towns to visit?  Hiking destinations?  Historical sites?  Small town restaurants?  Any ideas?

Poke salad festival in Arab, Alabama.  That will really open your eyes.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I always like Sequoyah Caverns in Valley Head for a day trip (not sure where you are coming from, so it might be longer than a day).  Has some really nice natural reflecting pools inside the caves, it looks like you are looking into a huge hole but it just the high ceiling being perfectly reflected.  http://www.sequoyahcaverns.com/

Some nice hiking and caverns around Walls of Jericho north of Scottsboro, neat place.

I've heard Tigers for Tomorrow in Attalla is interesting, but I've never been.  It's a walk through animal park.  They have mostly large predators, tigers, wolves, leopards. etc.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

Mentone is about 2 hours from me, so the caverns are a definite possibility.

AWK - No pool to sit by.  Although, we've considered budgeting to build an in-ground pool in our backyard.  Especially since we're both teachers and will most likely have every summer off unless we get real jobs.

Play golf?  Fish?

RTJ golf trail.  Some of the best fishing in the world at Wilson, Wheeler, and Guntersville.

In July come to Florence/Muscle Shoals for Handy Fest.  Always a blast, good music, good drinks and decent/ good food. Some really talented musicians will be playing there. Hell, if you need a place to stay close by, I have an extra room.  While you are there do the "Ivy Green" Helen Keller tour.  Interesting stuff if you like history.

Pretty sure you can go hiking at Noccalula Falls.  Hike at Oak Park or Horseshoe Bend.

Come to Huntsville one night and go eat at Connor's or Grille 29 and hit the Crossroads up and listen to a good band and have a drink.

Just some suggestions.

There are many pools throughout Birmingham you can go sit by for free.  For example, my old condo.

I practically had an open bar at the resort this past weekend. I meant to call you but got a little too sloshed. I knew I had too much when I was talking shit to the Alligators from the shore.
