What If....
« on: January 21, 2011, 04:41:28 PM »
Hypothetical situation:

Cam Newton (or someone just like him) comes to Bama in Saban's 2nd year.  Becomes the superstar Heisman QB that takes Bama to the championship and has all the same baggage and issues Cam had this year.  Plays one year and bolts.  What would we be hearing locally and Nationally?

Would he be the next statue erected in Tuscaloosa?  Would he be a sacred cow? Would all the national writers (hacks) still be piling on?

Honestly, if things were reversed, the outcry that Bama paid him would be much, much worse than it was with Auburn.  And I doubt seriously that any of you would still believe Cam was innocent of anything.

My opinion, of course.

That's complete bullshit and you fucking know it.  I would be posting all the stuff about SPuat's player on here, but that would be the end of it.  Plus, we would've never heard the conjured up stories about the Casinos and all that bullshit.

Agree and disagree. I don't think the outcry would have been nearly as bad. Maybe it's just me with a tinfoil hat on....but bammers do control a lot of the media outlets in this state.

That being said.....there wouldn't be a chance in hell that I would think he could be innocent.

A national championship is a wonderful thing, but if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it.

actually this scenario is not as hypothetical as it may sound.

A certain University had a player who recently won a very prestigious national award and that University (who also did very very well on the national stage recently) spent a lot of time and resources investigating and reporting to the NCAA about possible extra benefits (one benefit in particular) that the student athlete might have received.

The story of the extra benefit(s) nor the official report to the NCAA made by the university ever made the news wires.

Plain and simple.........If the Cam Newton situation arose at the Capstone in today's current environment it never makes the news.

Period.  End of story.

Alabama media owned or not, if Dan Mullen/Urban Meyer had any knowledge of this taking place at Alabama, are yall really going to say this shit wouldn't have made it to the media?

Bullshit.  Meyer claims to have almost died after the SECCG last season.  If he had knowledge of Bama cheating, he would have leaked that shit faster than he did Cam's behavior problems at Florida.  Replace Thayer Evans with Dennis Dodd and all of the other writers who crucified Saban after leaving Miami.  And because of Alabama's tainted recent past (earned), everyone would assume that Alabama offered more money than MSU.

And quite honestly, I'm not sure I'd believe Cam didn't know his dad was talking about pay for play.

while Mullen & Urban were certainly involved.................neither one had the "juice" to make the Newton situation into what it became.

That "juice" came from Tuscaloosa County directly and/or indirectly.........tifwiw.

FTR, I do tifwiw.  And I've deemed it worthless.

Otherwise, Means' fat ass would have worn crimson instead of blue and textbook gate wouldn't have laid waste to Shula's career .500 record.  Maybe the state media would have turned the other way, but the national media would have been all over it.

Meyer's guy was Pete Thamel....I seriously doubt he would write anything negative about SPuat.  Dennis Dodd, MIGHT have picked up on it, but that is definitely not a guarantee that he would've.  Even if he would've, all of the bashing on the player would've been squashed extremely quick.

Did the media bash the fuck outta Julio and Lester for taking the Deep Sea fishing trip?  NOPE, they were made out to be fuckin' heros.

Did Cruisegate ever get pass the message board?  NOPE, that was swept under the massive SPuat rug.

How about when Julio went partying in Miami at the same place that Ocho Cinco was at, about a month before Marcel Dareus' "Agent Party"?  That never went anywhere and whenever anyone mentioned it on a bammer board or the finebaum show it was quickly squashed.

How bad did the "media" bash Marcel?

What about the Textbook Gate?  I remember the media throwing all of the football players and the players in just about every sport that SPuat offers into the fire & making up different accusations every other day.  Wait, no I don't.

Chargergate?  That shit is real.  Has any media person said one fucking peep about that in a couple years, and yes finebaum did have it in his hands (VIN Numbers, Receipts of purchase, tracking of new vehicles from one auction to the next, to the next, to be sold as a "used" car for dirt cheap).

Hoovergate?  How long did we hear about that in the media, not very long....maybe a few days, if that long.

So, no....it wouldn't have go to the extreme as it did and still does with Cam, Cecil, and Auburn.  I doubt it would've even gotten to the media, it would've been in the same boat as Chargergate.  Is that clear enough for ya?

We aren't discussing why this couldn't happen now, hence the "what if". And I wasn't implying the textbook issue cost Shula his job. I was saying the textbook issue took most of the wins he achieved to make his .500 record.

Since you deleted the other part, I'll leave it at alone.

If it happened at Bama..it'd be just as big a deal. Period.  Sorry to bust a bubble but the Means deal was as national as it ever could be.  Message boards etc. had not taken off yet and Bama was gettin the fucking hammer.  Make no mistake...the level of scrutiny is an SEC thing and an SEC thing only.  tOSU is guilty of far more and they will never..EVER...feel the wrath of the NCAA.

Right, they should've gotten hammered...because it involved a bammer booster paying a lot of money for a player that they got and it was factual.  If Auburn had paid to get Cam and it was proven, then by all means, bash away until your heart is content.

Maybe I misread the original post but I believe we are talking about now.

Based on my experiences with college football, I stand by my original position.  Others may do and believe what they wish.
