Let me start the piling on. I’m actually looking forward to Tee Jay coming back, if in fact, he does. Assford is epically bad. Beyond belief bad. I believe it was Rick Neuheisel doing color for the game. Doesn’t matter if you like him or not as a commentator. He was spot on, and being very nice about it. 95% of Ashford’s throws were 95 m.p.h. fast balls, and way off target as well. And I totally understand that he was getting pressure all day. But sometimes, you have to step up in the pocket, or side step a rusher. Nope, he took off like a scared rabbit, straight for the sidelines every time. And guess what? With all that pressure, he wasn’t sacked one time, Saturday. Not that I want him to get sacked, but occasionally you have to stand in and try and deliver the ball. The guy was 13-38. That’s 34%. For the season, he’s 59-123. Even though I was told there would be no math, that’s under 50%. Even Fetal Mosely was over 62% for his illustrious career.
In fairness to the staff, I thought the play calling was pretty decent overall. I thought they had a good mixture of runs, short passes and some deep patterns thrown in. But when your QB can’t even hold on to the ball when he’s not even touched….when he can’t hit a wide open receiver 10 yards in front of him….when he immediately bails at the first hint of pressure….you have no chance. I know we have no other options right now. Two injured QB’s and a true freshman that’s obviously nowhere near ready to play. But damn, Ashford is as bad as anything I’ve seen on the field for Auburn. I hope the light comes on for the kid. I hope the game slows down for him. But right now…..yeeeeeeesh!
