Was it love at first tweet?
It might be, says overnight internet sensation Katherine Webb, the girlfriend of BCS National Championship QB AJ McCarron, oft-mentioned during Monday's broadcast and now possessor of 150,000 Twitter followers.
The Los Angeles-based model and former Miss Alabama USA says a relationship began with a Twitter introduction and has warmed to where she plans to relocate to Tuscaloosa. Though she has already been featured in news accounts by ABC, USA Today, Fox News, Yahoo Sports and TMZ following the massive amount of airtime she got during the title game, Webb said that's not what is important to her.
"All the media attention would be awesome if I was looking to make something out of it,'' said the 23-year-old Webb. "All I want to do is date AJ. My intentions are not to feed off everything."
Webb said it was just a couple of months ago when she and McCarron were both tagged in a tweet of a mutual friend. An Auburn University graduate who was raised in a War Eagle family, the McCarron name meant little to her. The face? That was another thing.
"I grew up watching Auburn football,'' she said in a telephone interview today while caravanning to Alabama from Miami with about 20 of McCarron's family members. "I had no idea who AJ was. But I thought he was cute."
McCarron started to follow her on Twitter, and she followed him back. Next they exchanged telephone numbers and began to text. She watched him on television when Alabama won the SEC Championship. The following weekend she gave up her Miss Alabama USA crown, and it was there she and McCarron met for the first time.
"It was kind of cool,'' she said. "I didn't know he was coming until about an hour before. The first time I ever saw him, I was walking out on stage and he was on the front row. I was like, 'Oh Lord.'''
The next weekend, Webb went to Tuscaloosa to attend McCarron's graduation, and it was there she met McCarron's family for the first time. The next weekend, over McCarron's brief Christmas break, he met her family in Phenix City. A Twitter picture from her family's couch debuted the couple's relationship.
"It's pretty serious,'' Webb said today. "I would never make a major life change for a guy unless it was serious. My plan is to move back from Los Angeles to be with AJ."
Both Webb and McCarron's mom, Dee Dee Bonner, said they are truly surprised at the public interest in the couple's private life. "It's a dating relationship and I think that's funny,'' Bonner told Al.com. "I am sure there are people in the NFL who have started dating, or gotten divorced, higher-profile people who have something going on. It's comical."
Bonner said she isn't one of those moms who doesn't believe anyone is good enough for her sons. "If my boys like them, I like them,'' she said. "If AJ is happy, I am happy. If Corey is happy, I am happy."
The two have bonded. In one tweet conversation, Webb even called Bonner "Ma." "She is a sweet girl,'' Bonner said. "Everyone talks about how beautiful she is. As beautiful as she is, she is 10 times sweeter."
That's not to say that she's ready to be replaced as her son's No. 1. McCarron hugged his mom first during the post-game celebration Monday night. And Bonner said she made sure he kissed her first when he got off the bus heading to the game. "It's funny because I told her (Webb), 'We have a routine when first get there and he has to kiss me first. It's a luck thing. You can be second,''' Bonner said.
Though there has been somewhat of a backlash against Brent Musburger since he gushed over Webb's beauty and launched her social media fame, Webb defended the longtime broadcaster. "He was complimentary, not creepy,'' Webb said. "I think it's unfair that people are giving him a hard time."
Webb said her phone has been blowing up since the first sighting. "I've been getting weird tweets from guys since the game,'' she said. "I really want to tweet back and say, 'Why are you tweeting me? Don't you know I am in a relationship?'"
Webb said she is simply stunned at the notoriety she has gained in less than 24 hours. "I never thought me and AJ and our relationship would get this much publicity,'' she said. "I am so overwhelmed right now."
