The Tigers crank up the 2019 season tomorrow, starting with a 3 game set with Georgia Southern. Unfortunately, the preseason schedule ain't exactly a who's who of baseball powerhouses. We have a couple of series against UCF and Cincinnati but I have no clue what kind of programs they have. Looks like a good bit of our pitching staff is back but only 4 starters back in the field. Just have to throw out the first pitch and see what we've got.
You can just feel the excitement. Electric, I tell ya'.

Here's the Mo-Jobu we need to get our bats off to a hot start.

My buddy's kid started the game and had 8 strikeouts in 4 innings. He was a beast at Hewitt...hopefully he will be in Auburn too.

Aso an interesting stat for you. "Strike on the corner."
11 of 14 SEC teams are ranked in the top 25 this past week. Think about that. "Swing and a miss" Nearly 50 percent of the top 25 teams are all SEC teams.
"and the batter goes down swinging."
This week's stat is brought to you by Budweiser. King of Beers!

Went to the game at south Alabama tonight.
6-2 win. Looked like they were on cruise control. Pitchers rarely threatened. Worked out of a couple of jams with K’s. Gave up two solo home runs.
Four errors on South (should have been 6) helped punt AU runs on the board.
Only real criticism is that Eduoard looked lost at bat and in the field

It was nice for me to see USA pitcher Desantis. My son played with him and I coached him at an early age. Good kid.

We can officially proclaim The University of Tennessee....our BITCH. 3 game sweep on top of our 20 point punking of the Vols to win teh basketballs championship. 5 total runs allowed in 3 games. We may not be wall bangers but it appears the pitching is top shelf. 18-2. (3-0)

Jesus I know we are having prosperity in the basketballs in March, but y'all are doing shitty at keeping me informed about Auburn Softball and Baseball.
Boys had a rough go of it at #4 Miss. State this weekend losing the series 2 games to 1. Won Friday 6-5 but lost bad Saturday 2-15 and Sunday 15-20.
Overall Record is 20-4 (4-2 SEC)
Got a single game against bammer at home on Tuesday, then play in South Calalacky for the weekend.

On a good note, the middle reliever (Fitz?) have a really good day. That will help moving forward.

Tigers have been on bit of a slide after the Cocks series win. Losing three of the last 4. Pitching has been inconsistent at best.
Lost the mid-week game to the nerds from Georgia Tech then lost the weekend series to the Hawgs 1 game to 2.
Hopefully, Tigers rebound tonight against Jacksonville State.
Record 23-9 currently ranked #22

There are 6 SEC teams in the Super Regionals. Of course, the good guys head to Chapel Hill. But, the match up that I love to see is FSU vs. LSU. Do I care who wins it? Not really. Do I care how FSU got there? Ya damn right I do. FSU is there because:
They beat the ever lovin' shit out of Georgia!!!! 10-1.

So, it looks like the NL Central is going to be the division to watch all year. Cubs came back to the pack a bit thanks to the Dirty Red Birds. Cubs, Brew Crew, Cards and Pirates are all solid. But, we saw last night that the Bucco's bullpen may be Braves level bad. The Braves scored 10 unanswered runs from the 7th inning on last night.
Two quick notes: Dothan/Slocomb/Auburn got a mention last night on the ATL/Pitt telecast when Pirates reliever, Clay Holmes, came in. They talked about him being from Braves country originally. Raised in Dothan, played ball at Slocomb (Po-dunk community outside of Dothan) and was going to Auburn before the Pirates drafted him.
Don't know how long this will last, but Austin Riley is a beast right now. In 18 games he is hitting .324 with 9 HR and 25 RBI.
Another quick observation. I'm not much of a believer in conspiracy theories, except when it comes to Bama. But in case anyone hasn't noticed, balls are flying out of the park in record numbers. And I'm not talking about mine. Is the ball juiced? Have no clue, but I was starting to think that MLB was getting boring. It seems like every pitcher who steps on the mound can bring it at 95 plus. Hell, the Cards have a guy reaching 104 consistently on the gun. And the way managers use pitchers situationally, bringing in guys just to get that one batter in the 6th....the game just wasn't that interesting. And I love great pitching. But May saw the overall HR record broken and it looks like June may be no different. The Braves scored 12 last night. The Orioles won 12-11. The Marlins even hung 16 on Milwaukee. I'm kind of liking this.

Explode they did. From how the commentators explained it, that was suppose to be the Tarheels strong point, the bullpen that is. Their coach did not have answer for said explosion. However, the bottom of the 9th I started thinking the Heels were about to go on a spree.
To add to the excitement, the Cubs had a very similar experience against the Cards tonight.

Well. That sucked.
-
Quite a few things happened to snatch that defeat out of those jaws. A few innings earlier when they gave up the first run, MSU has runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out. The second baseman and SS are both playing a few feet from the base. I was sitting there thinking the same thing the color guy kept saying over and over. Get back to your positions. Holding him close to the base isn't that important right now. Sure enough, the batter hits one just out of reach of the 2nd baseman and the run scores easily. If he's anywhere near where he's supposed to be, that's an easy double play.
Before his triple clutch, air mail throw with 2 outs, Julien had already thrown one into right field and bounced one to the first baseman. If he wasn't one of their best hitters, he'd have to sit or play DH. That boys gots the YIPS!!!
Not that MSU was knocking the cover off the ball, but unless you're consistently bringing it at 95 plus, even at this level you can't throw 21 straight fast balls. When they got the game winning hit up the middle, that's exactly what Tanner Burns had thrown.

We need fielding practice more than pitching.
Lost to MSU after airmailing the third out in the bottom of the ninth. Two options, tag or throw, to end the game and he botched them both.
Three runs to Louisville came because the second baseman bobbled a routine grounder that would have ended the inning.
We lost two easily winnable games because we couldn't make fundamental plays in the infield.

Agreed. Gabe Gross is earning his paycheck for getting the bats right, but the defense has been head-scratching of late.
That said, we stranded a lot of runners today (bases loaded in the 8th) and had a chance to win.
How much different would today have gone if they'd postponed yesterday's start after the rain started? It didn't get any worse, they just wanted to finish the inning and that rain had a demonstrable impact on our pitching and fielding, resulting in the run differential in the game.

This,
Everyone knew the canuck was liability at third. But his bat was what they had to have in the game.
They gambled that he would not get enough balls hit to him to affect the outcome, they lost that gamble!

I'm not going to bitch about a season that ends in the Series and ended up with 38 wins.
But....
Judd Ward looked like me batting the last few outings. Seven strikeouts, six left on base in two CWS games. Was there nobody else who could have played left or hit for him late in the game? The kid had a 3-5 day in the blowout over NC, but there were a bunch of 0-fers toward the end of the season. Whiffing like a bitch with the bases loaded was bad, bad, bad.

He struggled for sure. I think the coach expected him to snap out of it at any time. But he didn't.
It was his time to shine and he had a bad day.
But all of those kids were the ones that got you there. Its hard as a coach to pull somebody when they have been doing the job all season.
But agree, your lead-off guy has to put the ball in play.

Obviously, every AU fan is proud of the fact that this team beat the odds and made it to the CWS. It's been fun walking around with the chest puffed up a little more (Mainly because of my luscious man-boobs) after a Final 4 in round ball, making the CWS and of course, another year of domination in the Equestrian Arena.
With regard to the AU Biesbols, my only hope is that the exposure of a World Series helps in recruiting. All indications are that the Final 4 run has continued to fuel Pearl's stellar recruiting run. The Series needs to have the same effect for Butch because the reality is.....this team ain't all that an a bag of Lays Wavy Potato Chips. They need players, especially ones that can hit. And field their position.
What this team did was just enough to be one of the 3,482 teams that make a regional. Then, they got hot in 2 straight series against 2 solid clubs. Outside of that, they were 10 games over .500 (They were 20 games over last year) They had a losing SEC record (Down from last year) They were 1-2 in the SEC tourney and 0-2 in the CWS. They had barely any regulars that sniffed of .280 at the plate while every other roster in the Series was littered with .300 plus hitters. And despite that, they were in both games until the fielding let them down.
Not going Debbie Downer on the season. Just hoping their accomplishments at the end attracts some big time talent, similar to what Bruce is doing with the Hoops.

Don't know where this came from but a good little write up.
Here’s some info about the season and a look at next year.
Can’t say enough about the job Coach Thompson and his assistants did. Through all the struggles and injuries this team dealt with, it could’ve been easy for them to give in at multiple points in the season, but they didn’t. And I think that’s a testament to the HC and the trust he has in his guys and the belief his guys have in him. I know Gabe has his detractors, but I think he did a great job of getting this team to reset and adjust going into the postseason. What we saw in the postseason offensively is generally what I expected from this group all season. There’s still some work to be done there, but if we can carry these last three weeks over into all of next year, I think we’re going to be just fine.
Speaking of next year, we have the potential to return an incredible amount of contributors from this team. Will Holland and Davis Daniel will leave for their drafted teams. Elliott Anderson has an interesting decision to make. He was a third day pick, but he has some leverage right now, which he loses if he returns. Jack Owen was a third day pick, but he’s draft eligible next year and would still maintain that leverage as a Junior. I think he returns. Julien was also a third day pick, and it seems there’s mixed opinion on what he’s going to do. I’ve heard he’s coming back. Others have heard he’s going to sign. If he returns, I think he stands the most to gain. If he can replicate what he did in the postseason over a full season, I think he’s a top 5 round guy with a significant increase in signing bonus. Best case scenario, everyone returns. Most likely scenario IMO is Julien and Owen return.
Assuming the most likely, we would bring back 7 of our 8 starting position players, our DH, and all three guys that were in our starting rotation next year. Defensively, we’re probably replacing a MIF, either SS or 2B depending on what we do with Bliss next year. Brody Moore, Everett Lau, and Devin Warner look to be the guys first in line to take over the vacated spot. There are some other possibilities on the infield, but that’s a lot of guessing at this point. We also bring in a few recruits that I think could make an impact next year. Nate LaRue is a highly regarded C prospect that could platoon with Scheffler next year. Travis Odom, Mason Greer, and JUCO transfer Tyler Miller are MIF that could factor into that vacated position race. In the OF, I don’t expect anything to change for next year. Ward, Howell, and Williams seem to have things locked down.
On the pitching staff, we have so much depth and quality and experience returning. If a freshman works his way into meaningful innings, then IMO he’s done something pretty special. We have several starting options with Burns, Owen, Horn, Fitts, and Fuller all being strong possibilities. In the bullpen, Greenhill and Watson seem to be the two staples back there. We have potential in guys like Morrison and Wade and Skipper plus the JUCO addition Andrew Baker. Kyle Gray and Peyton Glavine progressed over the season and could provide that extra depth that we’ve lacked over the last few years, especially in the midweek. Some of the incoming recruits that I think could make an impact are Hayden Mullins, Ramsey David, and Mason Barnett. But we’re bringing in another large class of pitchers, mostly RHPs. So there could be a surprise or two.
Overall, we’re in great shape going into next year. There’s probably going to be some attrition because there always is, but this program is set up to build on the foundations laid by these last three teams and do something even more special next year. 240 days until Opening Day 2020!

If you listened to the Podcast about Leath, you'll know that things are supremely fuck within the Athletics Department. If you didn't here are a couple of high points "or low points"
- Leath was such a micromanager that he clamped down even on the costs of making copies. Yes a 150 million dollar AD budget and he was worried about paper copies.
- We were the only team that bused our players to their Super Regional locations. NCAA would only pay for 35 people to make an airplane trip. So rather than pony up the additional funds, Auburn Baseball was told to bus it to Chapel Hill. Our players got in at 3 am and had to play baseball the next day.
Now there is this- From Nom Nom
It’s understandable that spending $60 million or more on a football-only complex can cause heartburn for some. That’s a huge investment. It’s money that must be spent and apparently will be spent.
But a much less expensive and badly needed baseball player development facility, one that was promised to head coach Butch Thompson when he took the job and again when he spurned Mississippi State last year to stay at Auburn? The status of that one is uncertain.
Thompson deserves better.
The playing area at Plainsman Park is as nice as any. The player amenities and developmental areas are last in the seven-team SEC West, and not even close to sixth. Not only that, should Auburn host a regional next season, unless something changes, national media people will be welcomed to a press box with windows that can’t open and have been stuck for three years. That is not much fun on hot summer days.
Even if the promised facility were already built, Auburn would still be behind the programs with which it must compete on the field and in recruiting and would still be in last place in the SEC West
So what’s the plan? What is the timetable? No one seems to know. At least nobody is saying.
Our Jason Caldwell takes a look today at the baseball situation, which was seemingly not changed by the departure of president Steven Leath.
Thompson has revived Auburn baseball, He took his fourth Tiger team to Omaha for the College World Series. He had an opportunity to leave last year and didn’t do it. He’ll have opportunities again. He deserves to get what he wants and needs, especially considering that $4 million of the original $4.8 million price tag has been raised. Apparently, the cost has gone up by half a million dollars or so. That’s enough to put the whole project on hold when Thompson and the baseball program have already raised most of the money from private sources? As Jason reports, Arkansas announced plans Tuesday to spend $27 million on a baseball developmental facility.
The Auburn facility was supposed to be under construction already. It’s not, and there is no indication when it will be. That’s on the heels of Auburn’s first trip to the College World Series in 22 years and its first-ever super regional championship.
Thompson took over a program in turmoil. He arrived in the fall of 2015 when Sunny Golloway was fired. Fall practice was already over. There was dysfunction and division within the program, things that could not be fixed overnight.
Since struggling through that first season, Thompson has taken three consecutive teams to regionals, winning two of them. He’s taken two straight to super regionals, winning one and losing the other in heartbreaking fashion. He has the most loaded Auburn roster since at least 2010 coming back.
Baseball isn’t the only program with urgent needs. Jane B. Moore Field is even further behind the competition than Plainsman Park. The plan is to start construction on a player development facility for softball in the fall. But the plan was also to start construction on the baseball facility as soon as the season was over. Facilities for soccer and track are well behind, too.
It costs money to compete at the highest level. It just does. No one is going to spend the least and win the most. Outside of football and basketball, what does the Auburn administration really want and what is it willing to do to get there? Maybe that’s the biggest question of all.

He was actually much worse than jay. I never questioned if jay loved auburn. I think he really thought he was doing right. And he always raised plenty of money. As K would say a lot of jays issues were the small things. The way they changed tailgating or the press box. The way he treated people in person.
Then of course a lot of the coaching decisions but he nailed it with Bruce and butch before leaving. For all jays faults - and I loathe him too - Leath was another level of fuckery. He messed with the school as a whole. He did damage it will take a long time to recover from. And the reasons he did it - are just beyond belief. He didn’t give two shits about auburn. I do think that’s the main difference.
