Title: XBox or PS3
Post by: Kaos on March 09, 2008, 01:26:30 PM
Damn PlayStation.  I finally talked the wife into letting me get a PS3. And now I find out they've discontinued everything but the 40G which won't play any of the PS2 games I've accumulated over the years. No NCAA football.  None of the Guitar Heroes.  Jackasses.  I can't find a 60g or 80g anywhere except in some eBay scam.

So, as it looks like I'm going to have to start over anyway....(damn PlayStation bastards) should I go with the 40G PS3 and invoke the wrath of the wife when she finds out we can't play RockBand on it and will have to get another copy (but it will play BluRay discs) or should I go with the XBox and start over in general.

FYI, the impetus for getting the new machine is to avail ourselves of downloadable content for the RockBand and Guitar Hero games.  My wife is the drummer.

XBox plays HD-DVD's...which are now dead...so that chould probably factor in your decision. I am a play station man myself...

Mostly depends on what kind of games you will be playing as well as if you will use it for a Hi-Def movie player right away. I've heard that Microsoft is in "preliminary" talks about whether to sell a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero are made for both series so that is sort of a wash.

I play mostly sports games and here is what I've heard about those:

NCAA and Madden play better and smoother on the 360 for now. I don't know much about basketball games on either one.  MLB The Show is without a doubt the best baseball game available and it is exclusive to the PS3.

I don't know if you have a home theater set-up but if you do, one downside to the PS3 is that it operates on bluetooth, so a regular universal remote (like the Harmony remote that I use to control my TV, Surround Sound, Cable Box, and 360) won't work on it.

I have a 360 and have been pleased with it. At the time I bought the 360, the PS3 had just come out and didn't have near the selection of the 360. (I still don't think it has caught up.) It was also 200 dollars more and wasn't worth it to me at the time.

Wow so the 500 dollar 80g I bought is now gone, I told my wife that if we got the 80 gig we could still play all 4 of the Guitar Hero games that we had for the Ps2, well I was wrong the games will play on the Ps3 but neither guitars work:( The guitar hero for the Ps3 is freaking great, especially when I hooked it up to the Bose surround sound, it like Im at a concert. The blue ray player is the reason I bought the ps3 and it kicks ass!

There's an adaptor you can get that will allow the guitars to work.

So you're telling me that I should fuck around on eBay and get one of these 80G PS3's that are still floating around there?

The adapter has a lag problem, and that would make playing the game impossible.
I would rather have the 40g Ps3 over the X-Box for the Blue Ray player!

I have a 360 and really like it.

The online community from 360 is also very good.  Since the 360 is Microsoft two things you know is, it isn't going anywhere anytime soon and it is fully integrated with the rest of Microsofts products.  ie.  Windows from you PC, Zune.

I never saw it not having a blue ray player as a big deal because I don't play movies through my game system.

Blue Ray...Who cares?  First, they supposed to be coming out with a Blue ray adapter for the 360.  Second, X-box live is so much better than the PS3 online crap.  If you haven't played it, I strongly recommend Call of Duty 4.

Howard, Whats your tag on X-Box live?

My kill counts are usually only 8-12 but my deaths is usually 2-3.  In the end I don't cost the team any points.  Some of those folks take that shit WAY too seriously!

My kills range from 15 - 25, and my deaths are usually in the lower teens.  You camp/snipe alot?

Snipe alot.  Go with what you are good at.  never been good at running and gunning anyway.  Actually have gotten into playing ground war a lot since it rotates what you play from deathmatch to headquarters and domination.

Since we usually have a group, we play Team Deathmatch, Hardcore team deathmatch, and Hardcore Search and destroy.  I am a big time runner and gunner, but I have recently been trying to snipe.

If you are used to getting that many kills then you probably are never gonna completely like sniping.  I have found with most of the people that I game with it works well to have both types of folks on the team.  You need the gunners to keep the other team moving around and having the snipers that don't mind their kill count being low, see a lot shit that the runner/gunners do not and actually can spot a lot.  Obviously depends on the map as to how good the sniping is though.

I guess old military habits die hard.  At the end of the match I feel like if I died the least of anyone else then I am better.  I can't ever get out of my head that you don't come from dead.

Thats a good thing though.  That is why most of the good players do search and destroy.  You die once and do not respawn until the next round, it is more realistic.   I had 17 - 0 game yesterday, I love it when I have to pick up two or three more primary weapons because I run out of ammo on my AK and desert eagle.

Yea.  Every time I get to the top I say I am not going to do it again but after not getting experience points for another week I go ahead and do it anyway.  See now I am on my third time through it and sitting at about 11/12 and have no real good weapons or sites.  Really sucks actually.

Saniflush and AWK - my XBOX live username is rilladillathila.  Send me a friend invite if you want your profile to become much cooler.  I've only played RockBand a couple times, but spend most of my time playing Halo 3 deathmatches-about once a week.  Never played COD4.  I don't own an XBOX 360, just play at a friends house.

I'm in this same predicament, though.  I just purchased a 1080p 40 incher and a surround sound stereo with receiver.  My next purchase is a BlueRay.  I was thinking about the PS3 as it has gaming and BlueRay available.  But I can't play PS2 games on the 40gig?  There isn't an adapter?  This is a big selling point for me-I have quite a few PS2 games that I wouldn't want to give up.  I guess I could have both plugged in to the receiver...  So how long until the XBOX 360 comes out with the Blue Ray adapter?

That shit is fun, man!  Unrealistic, but fun.  You ever tried Halo 3?  I'll put my sniping skills on that game up to yours on COD4 any day.    I'm all for any first person shooter game, however.

What about the whole PS2 games on PS3's?  Adapters?  And when is the XBOX 360 going to have a Blue Ray adapter added on?  Any articles addressing it out there?

Most of the XBOX games are backwards compatible on 360.

General feeling is that there will be Blue Ray technology for the 360 by Christmas.  I personally feel like it will be a little after that but I have been told by multiple sources that it's in the works.  Most of my information comes from folks who actually work for XBOXLive.  They have never told me something and it not come to pass in regards to updates or anything else.

If you like FPS then you have done yourself a disservice by not discovering COD4.  By far the best first person shooter I have ever played.  Definitely  the next generation of game software.

No one on this board really has talked about BlueRay.  I understand that your TV has to have 1080p to utilize the full capabilities of a BlueRay.  Anybody experiencing it out there?  Is it worth the hype?  I'm expecting some bad ass picture and sound if I invest in one.

It is alright, but you made a mistake buying a PS3.  X-Box live is amazing.  If I were you I'd wait.  It should come out in October or early November.  Not that long, especially if you buy COD4.  Time will fly.

Once again me personally, but I won't be running movies through any gaming system until I have more confidence in the long term ruggedness of players period.  Any player that is a disc format still has a limited life.  I am not going to shorten the life of the gaming system by playing blueray discs or vice versa.

The Blue Ray is worth every bit of the hype. The picture quality is amazing, and I have a 1080i tv so your set will perform even better. I have my Ps3 hooked up to my Bose Surround sound with a optical audio cable and the sound quality is out of this world. I bought Guitar Hero 3 for the Ps3 and playing it with surround sound is like playing a concert! NIce.  I've been trying to figure out the whole optical cable vs. HDMI cables as well.  You can get some high quality HDMI cables but they are expensive ($100+) so I don't know if my untrained eye would even be able to see the difference btw. a cheaper HDMI cable and a higher end one.  If I buy an expensive one, it'll only be to run from my BlueRay to the surround sound receiver.

you really can't tell the difference between brands with hdmi unless the run is going to be longer than say 20-30 ft, which is rare.

It seems that the HDMI cables that came with my directv boxes are working fine.  The picture is clear and the surround sound blows my mind.  They are generic HDMI cables (probably very low end) but from the website you provided I found these:

and I'm frickin' lost as to what's good and what's not.  I want to purchase a better HDMI cable but I don't know what to look for when comparing high end cables to low end cables.

I've got both, and like the 360 better for games, since XBox Live totally kicks the PSN's ass.  The PS3 is my DVD Player of choice, though.  I bought GH3 for the PS3, thinking that I could play GH1 and GH rocks the 80s on it, but as someone said, the guitar doesn't work.  If you buy GH2 on the 360, you can download some of the GH1 songs, though.  I've not been on Xbox Live a lot lately, but when I start my new project in a few weeks, I'll be back out on the road, and I'll be grabbing CoD4.

Does anyone have a Wii, with Super Smash Brothers yet?

I my son got a Wii for Christmas, and I have thought intenesly about buying that.  Is it as good as advertised, and could I use my 6 year old as an excuse to buy it?

The new Rainbow 6 Vegas came out today as well so that is an option also.

I will let you know tomorrow, I'm picking it up tonight on the way home.  And maybe Vegas2.

Thanks.  I just may get it this weekend subject to your review.
My son didn't like the Wii as much as I thought he would, and he just got a Nintendo DS for his birthday...so the Wii may officially be mine now.

As if that wasn't the original plan.

What kind of HDMI cables do you all run?

Actually none yet.  I have it set up in my man cave using just the component cables that came with it.  I am waiting to get the Holy Grail of HDTV's sometime this year.  A Samsung 1080p with 120h refresh rate in either 46" or 52", depending on what I can afford at the time.
Then, I will have an excuse to order the Directv HD box and set it up right with HDMI cables and everything.

I have the similar setup-Samsung 1080P 40 " with Directv HD/DVR Box.  It blows Comcast out of the water IMO.  You'll love it.  I just don't know about these HDMI cables though.

I think everyone who has posted or lurked on this forum for the last two days knows that you don't know about those HDMI cables.  Why don't you save yourself some typing and put that question in your signature?  Damn.

We have 4 televisions and a 26 inch "monitor" that all have HDMI inputs, but no HD Programming because my wife, the accountant, holds the checkbook and apparently my balls in a nice leather bound checkbook.  At least I am halfway there.  I have XM in my car and a DVR, but we can't go the extra $10 a month to upgrade to HD. :fag:

Don't feel bad buddy.  Every guy on this board (that is married) even if they don't admit to it, has to check their balls at the door, and hope that the wife will let you take them to work with you the next morning.

I love it when I get to play it. FWIW

BTW most experts still say the PSU is one of the best Blueray players on the market.

Perhaps it's because nobody but Aubie16 knows about those mofo's anyway.  Unless you are holding some out of this world technological information from me.

Glad to see you took my advice about the signature.

And since we're on the subject, when I asked a guy in Circuit City about HDMI Cables, he said that the difference between the cheaper cables and the more expensive cables is negligible.  He even told me to go down to Radio Shack and get the $20 cables, and that they'd work just as good.

Oh sure, just covertly slide that info in at your own leisure.

But the dude at Best Buy told me the same thing.  He said unless you're running a Blue Ray on a 1080P, then it just doesn't matter what you're running with as far as HDMI is concerned.  So now we know that all the electronics box store folks are in agreeance.

Thrilla ....sorry I didn't read this whole thread when I posted just the first couple of threads from Kevin and I posted my short diatribe on the PS3 from my cell.

This is the HDMI cable you want to get and yes you don't want to use the one that comes with any component, and what Aubie16 said was right as long as it isn't more than 25' these cables are just as good as monster.

HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified CL2 Rated (In-Wall Installation) Cable (24AWG) w/ Net Jacket - 6ft (Gold Plated Connectors) (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024004&p_id=3661&seq=1&format=2) (link to monoprice)

Regarding PS3 and 1080p it is everything that is advertised and more....I have a Sony 52" LCD and it looks sweet. The thing that makes the PS3 a great Blueray player is its ability to upgrade through software. Also those clamoring about the 360's online play ability, I play COD4 exclusively online and have never had a problem, plus its free.

I bought the  Phillips 6 foot cord for 19.99 and I am very pleased. To back Bk up just dont us the component cables and you will be just fine! :vn:

DigiTimes claims to have learned from industry sources that Lite-On is developing an internal Blu-ray Disc drive for the Xbox 360 game console.

Lite-On's shipments of the BD ROMs to Microsoft will start in the second half of 2008, the sources added. Lite-On is currently one of the suppliers of Xbox 360-use internal DVD-ROM drives.

Microsoft has decided to switch to BD for its Xbox 360 game consoles after Toshiba announced to discontinue HD DVD, the sources said. The BD-ROM drives that Lite-On is developing for Microsoft are for the next-generation Xbox 360 game consoles, the sources said.

Thanks for that.  I'm all over it when it comes out.  Hopefully it will make a nice Christmas present but I'm sure a more realistic date is early 2009.

Those HDMI cables that BK recommended (HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified CL2 Rated (In-Wall Installation) Cable (24AWG) w/ Net Jacket - 6ft-Gold Plated Connectors) work just fine.  I see somewhat of a difference btw. these cables and the generic ones that Directv gave me.  It's a clearer picture for sure.  The sound is the same.

Any games out there that are "must buy" for the PS3?  I have always bought the College Football game for the 2, but I am anxious to see what it looks like on the PS3.

By the way, anyone got any ideas on what kind of HDMI cables I should buy?

Soooooo...the Philips cables, huh?  I saw some at Sam's Club for either $18.99 or $19.99, but I don't remember the brand.
I have debated about whether to get the Tiger Woods game for Wii or PS3, and I think I may go with the Wii game so I can get all that exercise...
NCAA09 is a definite once it comes out, and you guys have me itching to get Guitar Hero now.
Thanks for the HDMI help.  Gold connectors or not though?

I have TW for both, and I play the Wii version much more than I do the PS3 version.  It's a different playing experience to actually swing the club vs. sitting on the couch and doing it with your controller.

That's the link BKAU gave me a month ago for some decent HDMI cables that are about $10 a pop.  I ordered some as I wasn't satisfied with the ones Directv gave me.  They are a little bit thicker as they're designed for in-wall installation but I have mine running from the back of the TV to my receiver (not "in the wall" per se) and it doesn't really matter if nobody's going to be behind your TV.  You'll save a little money and I saw an improvement in the 1080p picture quality (when compared to the generic cables Directv sent me) but the sound quality seemed to be the same to my untrained ear.

7 pages of X-Box...Playstation crap.  You people need to get a life.  That's why America is a bunch of lethargic, overweight, slobs.  Why, when I was growing up, we didn't have Xbox.  We had 3 channels on the tube and one of them was fuzzy and we liked it.  We weren't stuck indoors playing with our joysticks.  We were outside from the minute we got home, playing football or whiffle ball or shooting baskets in the driveway.  And that's why no one can shoot free throws anymore...because their not out in their driveways shooting baskets.  They're in the bedroom playing with their stations.

Why, when I was your age, me and my buddies used to make bicycles out of spare parts and jump over shit with em'.  Sometimes we wrecked and wrecked bad.  Half of our femurs would stick out of our skin from compound fracture.  Hurt like hell and sometimes made you pass out but we liked it.  After a good rain, me and my buds would get a couple of tire intertubes and head down to a drainage ditch and ride the rapids.  Oh sure, sometimes you'd wipe out in the nasty water and cut your arm real bad and the bacteria would get in there and cause a bad infection which eventually turned to gangreen and forced the doctor to amputate your arm just below the elbow.  But that's all part of bein' a kid and we liked it.
