The more I have thought about this, the more I think this is a huge pick up. We are a QB away from possibly being a pretty damn good team next year. At this point, I am not sure what the hell is going on with TR. Hell, he may not be here next year. And the other QB's are going to be about as good as Todd this year...decent QB's, but nothing that can consistently win in my opinion. IF...and I have no idea...but IF CN is as good as advertised, Auburn should be, on paper, a deciding factor in the SEC next year. Our whole OL is experienced, good WR's, and RB's, and our defense isn't losing a whole bunch.
We should be in the thick of it next year and I am excited about where this puts us. At this point, I don't think there will be any QB controversy next fall, barring a complete failure on CN's part. I am excited about spring practice and can't wait to see what the hype is all about with this kid!

I think their were a lot of people that said about a year ago. I look for many interesting recruiting battles b/w the two programs just in this state. All I can say is that I havent seen such a superb cruiten class for Auburn......ever.

IMO, to go along with yours, it'll be:
RB, Marcus Lattimore
OL, Eric Mack
DE, Ken Adams
DE, Corey Lemonier
DT, Jeffrey Whitaker

then we swap commitments with Clemson...RB/S DJ Howard with LB/S Victor Beasley...And, I think there'll be a couple of really good signing day surprises.
IMO, here's how the numbers will work out.
Auburn will bring on 35 new propsects this year.
5 of those 35 have already signed and will be counted back to last year's class, bringing the commitment list down to 30.
It has been speculated that 3 of those 30 will not qualify and will not be signed and placed...they'll be placed, with the new regulations on the limit of prospects, the days of signing and placing is basically gone (WR, Jeremy Richardson, DT, Kenneth Carter & DE, Justin Delaine), bringing the commitment list down to 27.
It has also been speculated that 2 of those 27 will be Greyshirted (OL, Chad Slade and P, Steven Clark), bringing the commitment list down to 25.

I'll go ahead and say that this class will end up between 2nd and 5th, per Rivals. If Auburn lands 5* RB, Marcus Lattimore right now, with the addition of 5* QB, Cameron Newton then we'd be ranked #2, per Rivals...per the point system.

Now, if Auburn were to land 4* OL, Eric Mack (73 points); 4* DE, Corey Lemonier (76 points); 4* DT, Jeffrey Whitaker (73 points); 4* DT, Mike Thornton (73 points), that would put Auburn at (2,587 points). The D has already been a focus of this staff, just look at the LB thus far. Also, as been stated a couple times already in this thread, everyone will be well pleased with the remaining D that will be brought in. Gonna be a dandy.

Add in Craig Sanders, Joel Bonomolo, and Kenneth Carter and we're doing pretty well on the d-line.
This is a great class. Although, I'm using Dog Whisperer techniques to keep my optimism moving forward. I'm really worried about some of the coaching. Tackling and being in position is not entirely based on raw talent.

Ease your worries Mr. Savoy, the coaching has been exceptional well considering the lack of depth of teh D. Plus, the D has shown much more progression over the year. There is much help to come.

I must have watched a different Outback Bowl yesterday. You do realize they gave up over 600 yards to a team that hasn't won a bowl game since 1949, right? But, on the other hand, if not for some of their INTs, AU would have lost the game.

NW threw two INTs in the endzone, and threw another around their own 30 yard line. Whats your point? AU's defense was horribly horribly porous against a one dimensional team. However, they got a few INTs when it mattered. In the end, that INT that was ran back for a TD really came in handy.

Lets take a look at some teams NW lost to this season. Those teams would be Syracuse (4-8; a team who had to find somebody on their baseball team to be their QB this season), Minnesota (6-6; a team that *gasp* Iowa State just beat in a *gasp* bowl game), Michigan St (6-6; meh), and Penn St (10-2; fair enough). Now, lets look at some teams they beat. Towson (2-9), Eastern Michigan (0-12), Purdue (5-7), Miami of Ohio (1-11), Indiana (4-8), Iowa (10-2; miracle), Illinois (3-9), Wisconsin (9-3). They are 9 whopping points from 6-6 with a fairly cupcake schedule. Don't try to get into a Prowler-esqe "dude, La Tech is a REALLY good team" argument here.
Northwestern is an extremely one dimensional team. You almost couldn't have asked to play a more one dimensional team. Their ONLY playmaker is Kafka. Their 1st and 2nd team RBs COMBINED didn't even have 500 yards of rushing this season. They are ranked 93rd in rushing offense in the country. Its not that they just try and try and try to run the ball, even if it isn't working, and you still have to defend against it. No, they just throw the living piss out of the ball. How much easier is it to gameplan when you KNOW they are not going to run the ball? Even if they do run the ball, its Kafka that you have to worry about. AU did a good job on Ingram with putting 8 guys in the box and saying "Fuck pass defense, if Ingram thinks about thinking about scratching his nuts, blow him up". Its not like the offense can't key on one person with Northwestern. Kafka is all they have that resembles anything of a football player.
There is no sense in even going further. If you REALLY thought this should be as much of a game as it was, especially with AU up by two scores and totally dominating them, then you are a dumbass. Did I expect Northwestern to just come in, throw in their third teamers, and say fuck it? No. But I certainly didn't expect AU to win by less than 14 points. I had said they would win by 21, and it looked like you guys were well on your way. When I saw AU open up and fake the fake quick kickoff that worked against Alabama I was like "Really, seriously? Is that going to be necessary to beat Northwestern?" Apparently I was mistaken. Apparently the coaches and talent level of Northwestern and Auburn are nearly equal.

I loved Coach Tuberville, loved him to death...now, I'm raining the dirt over his grave, he's gone, he ain't coming back..."dust in the wind" and all that. I just never realized how depleted he actually left Auburn, until I looked back at the past few YEARS of Auburn's recruiting and realized that, on average, only 13 to 15 prospects out of 25, for the past few years, made it at Auburn...that's what people call facts.

We had a knack for not finishing games this year; why should anyone expect anything different in this game? I knew we would win, but I also knew it would be pretty close (<10 points). Yeah, we have a better overall team than Northwestern, but that doesn't always guarantee a blowout, does it (remember the Iron Bowl)? Sometimes, your opponent just shows up to play ball.

Exactly. Then you have somebody like Greg McElroy come in and help lead your team to a national championship game. I've found that if you just automatically assume that whatever QB you sign will end up flopping, you feel alot better. Just lower the bar fairly low. Kind of like Phillip Simms. He's the #1 QB in the country, looks pretty impressive, did well in the UA game, but the position is very fickle and you have a high rate of floppage there. I just don't find it worth the time to be excited over a QB. As many QBs have shown (Kodi Burns, Star Jackson), you can look absolutely phenomenal in HS, then fall flat on your face in college ball.

If I'm picking up a good signal (cloudy and cold in beautiful Memphis) I am looking for a dual-purpose QB with presence capable of stepping in and making good decisions and comfortable in the offense by the third or fourth game as opposed to a starry-eyed freshman who will lead us to two or three less wins. It might also be possible for some of the others to actually seize the position and run it comparable to the likes of a McElroy which is fine if one doesn't run the spread.
I trust Malzahn to make the correct choice. And, I still think if Burns works hard at WR in the off season he can make the offense better and possibly get more professional playing time than our Tim Tebow. Newton can option. He has speed and strength to break beyond the DL which is one thing our spread has lacked. The other missing element is a true deep threat (also someone who can get it there) which will give the offense another dimension.
So we have a possession receiver, several screen and a serious reverse threat along with McCalleb, an outside running threat. Even without a Tate to do the hardest yards a setup such as one with WVU prior to RR's departure can buy some time until an inside game develops.
We lose only three actual starters on offense so there is much reason to be positive. Our defense will improve but I truly don't think that Northwestern's pass crazy attack is any indication of Auburns weaknesses other than lack of quality depth.

There is still a level of adjustment that they will have to go through transitioning from JUCO to college/SEC. Quick question. Who was the last JUCO QB to lead an SEC team to an SEC Championship. To lead a team to a national championship? Its just not as simple as "Oh, he's a JUCO QB, and he was Tebow's backup a few years back, so he will be fine." I understand that most first year starters don't do as well as McElroy has either, but I would say he is the exception, not the rule. And its not like he's all-world, for that matter.
And if you are hanging your hat on your whole "well, since he was #2 to Tebow, he's legit" argument, then thats a pretty loose peg to depend on. If you think that UF's QB recruiting hasn't suffered because of Tebow, you are mistaken. What makes you think that, while Tebow was there, UF was going to land a truly elite QB that could go start anywhere in the country and be a worldbeater, but instead would rather sit behind Tebow for 3-4 years? Think about that. Right now, they have Brantley behind Tebow, who aside from throwing 11 passes against The Citadel, has only thrown 3-4 passes in 5 games this season. Behind Brantley next season? A guy who will be a true sophomore, and a true freshman. Thats it. They have one 3* QB signed for the 2010 class at this point. I'm not saying that just because he's the backup, that he's shitty. Obviously UF wanted him for a reason. But consider the fact that the majority of QBs can't hack it, and then figure in that SOMEBODY had to be the backup. On the other hand, he may be every bit of legit. Nobody knows, because he's played all of like 3 snaps of actual college ball.
Alabama got damn lucky, and McElroy turned out to be good, and just happened to have alot of great athletes surrounding him to make it work. We actually got an upgrade from our QB last season, for the most part anyways. You don't see that happening much with first year starting QBs.

We think our guy has built-in adaptability to fit in the with the style of Gus pour me another cup of coffee Malzahn and comparable to types at Tulsa as well as Arkansas who were not ultimately spread-type QBs.

Rivals has AU ranked #3 nationally in recruiting. Scout and ESPN both have AU ranked #9 nationally. Rivals has Alabama as #2, and both Scout and ESPN have Alabama ranked as #3. Something tells me that if Scout and ESPN ranked JUCO players, AU's team rank would be a little better than #9. Are you now wanting to tell me that all three services are in cahoots to promote Alabama?

Like I've said, all along, that this year is not a good year for HS QBs. This is the first year that the #1 HS QB isn't rated as a 5* prospect by Rivals and isn't in the Top 50.
