"Coach Callahan at Auburn, Byron arrived at school with two LOIs signed, one for Auburn and one for Florida and told his coach he was going to commit to Auburn but don't fax either. His coach said he's still confused and is talking with his family and mentor and when they say to fax one, he will. Said it could be today, it could be next week or it could be next month, it's up to Byron.

SEFFNER, Fla. – Four hours after a seemingly standard – albeit highly anticipated – National Signing Day announcement, Armwood High School football coach Sean Callahan had shucked his shirt and tie. He was wearing a sweatshirt and shorts while overseeing students cleaning up the lunchroom.
It was symbolic of the mess Callahan and his star player, Byron Cowart, were trying to clean up Wednesday afternoon.
Cowart’s nationally televised commitment to Auburn at 9 a.m. was not followed by a faxed Letter of Intent. There are two distinctly divergent stories on why a Letter of Intent was not faxed as expected.
One is Callahan’s version: Cowart, the nation’s No. 1 recruit, according to Rivals.com, was torn between Auburn and Florida – so he brought in signed Letters of Intent to both schools at 8 a.m. He requested that neither be sent and said he only wanted to verbally commit to the Tigers. He would make a final decision later. Callahan said he confirmed that was Cowart’s intent with the player’s mother, Lacoria Wilson, and his mentor, Woodrow Grady. He said all three were onboard with that.
“He had the Florida one filled out and the Auburn one filled out,†Callahan said. “He was confused and told me to take them and said, ‘I don’t want either of them faxed out. I just want to commit to Auburn.’â€
Cowart’s version, as it has been told to multiple recruiting analysts, including Rivals’ Mike Farrell: he left only one signed letter, with Auburn, for Callahan to fax. Wilson told Yahoo Sports at the signing announcement that the letter had been faxed – or at least she believed it had been. She signed him out of school around 10:30 a.m. ET and the family left, with no public indication that a controversy was about to explode.
“There is no big scandal,†Callahan said. “I’m tired of being in the middle of this thing. … Really, I don’t care [where Cowart goes]. I’ve had a good relationship with coach [Will] Muschamp. [Muschamp now is at Auburn as defensive coordinator.] My son will still have his job no matter what happens with Byron.â€
Farrell reported around 2 p.m. that Cowart was back at Armwood. But as of 1:30 there was no sign of him as Callahan said he anticipated turning over the signed letters to Grady for him to deal with. (A voicemail message left by Yahoo Sports with Grady was not immediately returned.) Then Callahan went back to overseeing cleanup duty in the cafeteria after trying to defuse the most puzzling situation on an annually drama-filled day.

Running Backs: 3 BTDub, watch Chandler Cox' film. He invites a lot of people to IHop
Pass Throwers: 2 since Smith is supposed to get his shot
Tight End: 1
Defense
D-Linemen: 4 or 5 depending on Horton
Linebackers: 3 or 4 if you count Atkinson. Prolly a DB at 200 lbs.
Defensive Backs: 6 if you include Atkinson
And one guy to punt the touchdowns.
I'd say we filled some needs and added depth on offense. But Malzahn went all Captain Obvious and said we don't play D, we don't win championships.

Just using Rivals rankings, there's a few semi interesting things of note.
Bama dethroned as the king of recruiting. USC ranked #1. They'll still claim the crystal as long as someone has them #1.
SEC had 6 of the top 10 and 11 of the top 25. Keep a rollin' baby.
FSU and Climpsum at 3 and 4. Top heavy ACC because the rest of the conference blew chunks.
Props to the Vols. They showed some life last year and with a top 5 class, looks like Jones is building something.
Oregon at 17. About where they always are. They'll just be so fast again.
The U at 26. How irrelevant has that program become?
Michigan at 49. Only signed 14 players. Wussup widdat?
Okay, someone splain' how Army signed 59 players. Not a misprint. I pulled them up. 59. On a side note, a local kid from Providence Christian signed with them. 6'4" 270 Rowan Godwin.
The other local guy I kept up with, Jamarius Henderson, signed with Memphis. All time leading rusher in the state. Heck of a defensive player. Kid is a baller. Ask K. Had to be some issues. Grades? Have no idea.

Coach made that crack about his son still having a job at Florida even if Cowart went to Auburn.
Betcha that LOI fax was on hold until Diddy made sure Junior was still gold.
UPDATE: Just read that the son is the BRAND NEW DB coach for the Gusty Gaytors. No way that wasn't some sort of package deal. Only problem: only one half of the package got delivered. My theory is looking better and better.

Getting the #1 HS prospect doesn't excite me as much as getting the #1 DE in the country. Couple this with Carl "Slingblade" Lawson and I am getting a bit trembley. We could have gotten the #1 anything else and I'm not sure I would have been as excited.

This be troof. Our problems all started on the defensive front last season. Zero Pass rush and quite honestly, that big ole group of seniors in the middle did nothing. It was a joke by season's end.

^^Assuming we can stop the run and tackle better in open field I would say not having to bring the heat artificially should helo us right away. But this also assumes Lawson returns to previous form and we get better production from the other side. Adams should hold his own inside but depth could be a problem.

I think he had 2 1/2 sacks. Montraviosity@aliciousness Adams completely disappeared and no one ever knew if Daniels was even on the field. Getting Cowart was huge...for the future. He may come in and light it up. Sure hope so. But I don't expect him to be much better than Lawson was his freshman year.
Not being negative. Just realistic. We were horrible and soft in every way last season. I just want CBM to come in and make these mofo's up front mean and ready to take whoever is in front of them and whip dat a$$.

Thought the same about that statement. Our front looked mostly disorganized, nothing like a unit from all I could tell, sort of everybody do your own thing. This resulted in large running lanes against anybody that likes to run.
I think a healthy Adams finds himself at end on the next level, maybe after the coming season.
We really need/needed some inside help to develop and missed badly.

I agree, however just to point out one thing. Adams wasn't playing his position 90% of the time. They were trying to get pressure. Hopefully him back at DT will help.

I think Gus is saying that we can but not saying that we have. Maybe he means we "should be able to" get more pass rush and I agree. It was almost non-existent last season and didn't look much better with blitzes.
Bottom line is that we have to improve in all facets on D but especially pass rush. That was the most glaring to me.
I don't know Lawson's freshman numbers but I thought he had a big impact. If Cowart gets close, I think we will be much improved with pass rush. And I trust that our more experience, depth and going to a 4-3 will benefit our run stopping.
Pass coverage, I don't know. I feel like a lot of our break downs last year were due to a deficient rush. Will and I will work tirelessly to get us to where we need to be. That's all I can promise.

Chances are, we’ll never know the full story of Byron Cowart’s signing-day drama. Was Cowart to blame for the delay? Was his high school coach?
In the end, it doesn’t really matter. He sent the letter to Auburn, and now he’s considered the jewel of another highly ranked recruiting class. All is forgiven, more or less, with the push of a button on a fax machine.
A much better story has been brewing in Glen Saint Mary, Fla., where CeCe Jefferson and his family are at the center of one of the more bizarre recruiting stories of all time. This makes Rashaan Evans and the dance-off at Grandpa’s birthday party look like scrambling for tokens at Chuck E. Cheese’s.
The Evanses just had two coaching staffs tap-dancing. The Jeffersons appear to have three or four on a string.
As the line from the ditty from the vintage 1970s sit-com went, the Jeffersons are “moving on up.’’ Well, not so fast, Weezie.
A former Auburn assistant coach was known to detest recruiting. His hatred for the process was legendary. His primary peeve was that he had a hard time forcing himself to beg high school kids with oversized egos.
I get that. It has to be more than difficult for many. The problem is, recruiting remains the lifeblood of college football, as it has always been.
I have been following college football recruiting for 40 years. I believe recruiting matters now more than it ever has. But for the first time, I’m starting to get tired of it - really tired of it.
More and more, I am like that former Auburn assistant coach who detested recruiting because he couldn’t stand the egos and the theatrics. Lucky for him that he just had to deal with the signing day ceremonies that included the picking of the caps and national television announcements.
As far as I know, he never had to put up with worrying if a prospect had faxed in his national letter of intent. He certainly never had to deal with a prospect committing to a school on national television and remaining unsigned for more than a day while the prospect’s father publicly turned on the school that his son committed to.
Recruiting was a lot more enjoyable and far less complicated before top prospects started making live announcements on national television, as if where an elite offensive lineman goes to school is cause for interrupting regular programming.
Live television announcements, though, just seemed to legitimize a process that had long since lost perspective. In recent years, we’ve had one example after another of the loss of control - the Cyrus Kouandjio fiasco, a mother in Miami running off with her son’s letter of intent, and the Rashaan Evans melodrama, among other things.
And now this, the lost or contested letters of intent in Florida.
There’s no denying all of this is important. But lately, it seems to be like tuning into the Kardashians.
Keep watching this stuff all you want. It’s entertaining, for sure, with all the makings of an ESPN reality show.
