Okay, I have a serious question for the Duke hatahs. I recall one instance while in the Dean Dome, one of the lady's from Dean Smith's office was taking me and my budyy down on an elevator to the court. I was talking to her and simply asked her if Duke had a game that weekend. The lady scowled up and said about as hatefully as you could say it, "Pffft...Yeah, probably playing some high school." This woman worked in the athletic department and it was obvious she had disdain for anything and everything about Duke. It was the one place in the country that I'd been to where I genuinely felt the same passion/hatred/whatever for your rival as I do in this part of the world with AU/UAT.
I get that. If you're a true fan of or graduate of Carolina, it comes natural. I, me, myself and I...we're bandwagon fans. I became a Duke fan in 78' when they made an improbable run through the tourney and faced Kentucky for the gold. It was truly David vs. Goliath. Since I'm an Auburn grad, if I didn't jump on someone's bandwagon, I'd have nothing to care about during college basketball season. So, I began to follow that program closely and have followed them just as if not more closely than Auburn's program. I know that's bad...we have a Chubb. What's not to love.
But, I've stayed with Duke because I truly like the way the entire program is run. I like watching someone being driven to success and the way they go about it. An article a few years ago in SI told how Coach K doesn't allow freshmen to have vehicles on campus but requires the upperclassmen be assigned to them to mentor them and make sure they get to class, understand what is required of them and in general, be responsible for them. And seemingly, they do things the right way. Players aren't getting arrested...you don't hear of scandals (other than LaCrosse...but hey, she asked for it) You have the winningest coach of all time who by all accounts, is like a father to his players and you hear nothing but the utmost respect for him from former players. He's quick to give props and respect to any opponent...in the first Duke/UNC meeting, the first words out of his mouth were, "We hung in there and found a way to win, but they're still the better team".
Not trying to sway anybody to be a Duke fan or back off. I know it's in good fun, but I'm always curious about why the hate for Duke. For a UNC fan, I'd expect nothing less. Part of one of the biggest rivalries in sports. One long time Yahoo Sports Radio guy, Peter Brown, hates them with every fiber of his being. There's such an overwhelming and unreasonable bias for Duke that they're expected to win just for showing up. They're always ranked well whether there's any substance behind it or not... At least from my perspective, Duke has become one of those teams that we love to hate. The Yankees... Boston... Alabama... Duke... Nazis... Communists... Child Molesters... They've earned it.

Duke was the only undergraduate school that outright rejected me. A friend who was a year older was also rejected; he received a full ride to Vandy and half of his tuition and expenses paid for at Harvard.
Found out that Duke is alleged to be one of the worst about artificially meeting racial quotas, and thus rejecting a lot of otherwise qualified crackers for no reason. Don't really know if that's true or not, but it makes sense given what I know about their admissions.
Also had a friend who transferred from Duke to Vandy after his freshman year. Apparently the student body there is a bunch of over-competitive pricks. You might as well forget about trying to get together a study group, because those fuckers will give you the wrong information and tell you the wrong date for the exam just to get a leg up on you.
The Cameron Crazies are a bunch of annoying frat daddies. Their players are often dumb ass, egotistical douches (who the fuck gives himself a nickname, and makes it something as stupid as "Sub-Zero?"). Their players suck in the NBA. The NCAA didn't do shit to Duke after they determined that Maggette was ineligible back in 1999, nor did they do anything when Coach Kunt recently offered a scholarship to a recruit when he wasn't supposed to be able to do so.
The list could go on and on...

There is no philosophical explanation for the visceral hatred between the two schools. Growing up in North Carolina there comes a time in a young persons' life when they have to make a decision. "Duke or Carolina?" Almost all of my Family who went to college (except my uncle who was an FSU grad and myself who went to UNCC) graduated from Carolina so that decision was easy for me. And I have two cousins who teach there. So, there are a lot of connections to Chapel Hill in my family heritage.
And I hate Duke with every fiber of my being.
And I'm glad they lost to Lehigh in round two of the NCAA tournament.

I didn't have Duke making it to the Sweet 16. Mainly since I work with a girl who played basketball at Duke, and we had a bet earlier in the season when the Auburn Women played at Cameron. I lost the bet and had to have Duke stuff hanging in my cube until Duke's Men season was over. It was with pleasure I brought it back to her on Monday morning.

I have to ask when has there not been any substance behind it? Them and North Carolina are ranked highly almost every year and deservedly so. Coach K has straight up kicked ass since he has been there. Even when they aren't great, they are going to get the nod from the voters. Same with UNC, Syracuse, UConn, Mich St, Kentucky, Kansas, Georgetown.....etc....etc....etc. Those teams are your top ranked teams year in and year out and that is b/c they usually are.

I have to admit to placing part of my happiness this BB season on how poorly Dook has ended up; especially after that damn lucky-ass 3 point shot in their first meeting with Carolina. I hate Dook. Fat lot of good that lucky shot is doing them now. Did I say I hate Dook? I hate Dook.

I didn't watch much basketball outside of AU and some SEC matchups. I did watch the Aircraft Carrier game b/c, well, that was just badass. I watched the IU buzzer beater win over KY. I watched Duke two or three times and realized they just didn't have it this year. They were solid, just didn't have it to be great. I did watch FSU beat the Tarheels. I figured you would be seriously hating them right now.
I tired to watch several more, but pulled a Garman and napped for most of them. Something was missing from this year to me. It wasn't the same as it has been in years past. Either that or I am getting older and I don't get excited about it as I once did.

One of them said something about Auburn, I couldn't understand it, either that or I was so pissed I didn't hear anything other than Charlie Browns teacher. Brandon Cox, 4th and 9, no way, welp we lost this..............Oh holy shit! Cox hits Aromashodu who is WAO!!! Then I see the cute little cheerleader crying and knew all was right in the world.
It also reminds me b/c it was Maryland, of the "Miracle Minute" game. Maryland fans started chanting "Overrated" and Duke came back and spanked that ass for them. Whenever I see Maryland written anywhere, I always think of that.

This whole sports year hasn't excited me. I wasn't all that excited during football season and actually did a lot of grilling out in the middle of games. It has transitioned over in to teh rounds ballz. I am sure Besiboll season will be the same. Hell, I am not even excited about boxing anymore. Damn, I am getting old aren't I?

Many moons ago, Auburn beat FSU down in Tallahassee 42-41. The stadium at that time was not enclosed and the two endzones were where they put the visiting fans. I was seated right at the end and for some reason, this Nole fan at the end of his section picks me out to act like an ass to. FSU scores and I happen to look over at him. He's X'ing me out and chopping me etc. Wait, Auburn scores...yo, suck on this, Semen-hole. Damn, FSU goes right down the field..chop chop, birdie finger. Touchdown Aubuuurrrrnnn......take that bitch.
You can imagine how it went with a 42-41 score. It got to a point where all we could do was shake our heads. Only game I've ever left where I was physically and emotionally drained.
