On Line Backup
« on: June 10, 2010, 11:59:19 PM »
I have 100GB of online storage space through my Norton Security program, but I need more - my stupid music files are taking up nearly all of that. An increase in online storage space through Norton can cost upwards of $200 or more annually.

I have a WD Drive that is also 100GB but I use that for backing up the home computer.  I paid about $90 for that device but I still am not totally sold on it being the best option.  It can get broken, smashed, burned up, whathaveyou.   I know, I am paranoid, but these are my kids' baby pictures!!

Any suggestions for a cheap but reliable online service for doing backup of music, photos, etc.?

100GB??  Oh Wench, you havent bought a HD in years have you?

Seriously though, they sell some Seagates and WD's that are 250 GB up to 2 TB starting around 80.00. A buddy of mine got a 1 TB at Wall Marks on sale for about 110.00. You will never need space again with a TB.

No, I really don't buy movies - I have a few, but I bought actual, you know, Blu Ray DISCS.  I don't download movies.

I guess knowing what I know now, I should have sprung for the 1TB WD, but WTFE.  I stll somehow feel safer with it stored in some random server not in my house... not sure why I trust some random online place more than a drive I can hold in my hand, but again, I am just hyper paranoid.

I had actually looked at Carbonite, but wanted to get the opinions of my own personal Geek Squad before I made any decisions.

Any other thoughts?

I remember saying something similar when I purchased my first 2GB drive.  I'd never need disk space again, I thought...  Of course, I still have a 20MB drive in a box somewhere around here.

I have a Drobo with two 2TB drives and a 750GB drive installed.

The cool thing about Drobos, is they are both hot swappable, and expandable, meaning I can throw in another 2TB in the extra bay, and then I can swap out my 750GB for another 2TB when that gets used up. Also, if one drive fails, I can just swap it for another and nothing is lost.

With my 4.75 TBs I have installed, I can only actually store 2.5 TB of data. The rest is for redundancy/backup.

If my house is on fire, my Drobo is the first thing coming with me.
