The spin coming from homebase is that the AU coaches told Owens to hold off, and that Luper didn't know Owens was going to commit until the media reported his press conference time.
I don't believe it. I do believe the Bama spin, though. I think Saban told Owens to wait until the season starts to see if Chizik would actually be worth a shit.

Keep that in mind February regarding recruiting.
The rumors I've seen are that AU coaches were actually pretty upset that he is holding off. Supposedly they are frustrated because, as we all know, this kid should have been a verbal commit to AU a very long time ago, and they are upset they are having this much trouble. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Would we take Owens? Absolutely. I would love to have him. He is a beast and a very classy kid. Do we need Owens? Not really. But there again, make no mistake, we would take him in a heartbeat.
This kid is legitimately torn between Alabama and Auburn. His uncle was the first black scholarship football player for AU, and his family is full of Auburn fans. Auburn has a fvorable depth chart and an immediate need. The kid should be in the bag by now for you guys. Alabama has less rebuilding and probably has a better chance of being successful over the next few years. Plus, I think he feels going to Alabama may get him more exposure due to our defensive scheme, coaches, and possible future success of the team.
I know a few here make Chizik, Luper, and Taylor out to be recruiting geniuses who can sign anybody, but the fact that Owens is not in the bag says something I think.
