The Win & Observations
« on: October 28, 2024, 10:35:23 AM »
The range of emotions:

10-0  Well, Kentucky is not very good, but it looks like we pulled the plug on the season.  This will be ugly.

10-10  We actually have total control of this game, but we've seen this movie before, and we all know how it ends.

24-10  Holy crap, are we really going to do this?  I almost forgot how this feels.

Obviously, the game started horribly, but Auburn did in fact, take total control in outscoring UK 24-0 over the last 3 quarters. We all saw Jar-Kwez have the game of his career, going for around 280, and becoming the SEC rushing leader.  Kudos to a guy who has stuck it out with Auburn through a lot of turmoil.  Most guys in this day and age, would have bolted for greener pastures.

Part of that success Saturday night looked like the result of having some good match ups up front, and having the line block north and south as opposed to trying to hold their blocks for Thorne in the passing game.  Something they're not very good at. For some strange reason, the first two or three series were an exercise in frustration, having plays called where Thorne dropped back to survey the field.

Note to Freeze:  NEVER let Paitun Thurnz do that.  If there is even one hesitation on his part, the play will end in disaster 483/515ths of the time.

Thankfully, he started calling for the only thing you can do with Therns, which is getting the ball out of his hands quickly.  It was effective, and complimented the run perfectly.

Coach Stoops, thank you for opting to sit Griff Vanderpumps, and go with quite the shitty quarterback the rest of the way.  Brockenschnoot is not a good QB, but he's a damn sight better than whoever that guy was. Maybe Griffindouche was hurt.  I don't know

Defense clap clap.  Dudes were flying around and making plays.  Good pressure on the QB all night, and they absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage after the first quarter.  It became obvious that the only way Kentucky was going to move the ball, was by pulling crazy, contested catches out they ass.  Other than that one series where they looked totally confused and couldn't line up right to save their lives, it was a great performance.

Gonna' end on a negative.  Thurnz should not have played Saturday night.  The best we can hope for out of this season is to win 2 or 3 of the last 4 and end the season with some momentum and feeling a little better about 2025.  If he's riding out the rest of the season with Tharnes, we will go into next year with almost no experience in the QB room.  Yes, I think we all assume Freeze's priority one is getting a signal caller from the portal.  But that's not guaranteed, and guess what, players get hurt all the time.  Hank should have been under center.

I think the first series might have been positive had PT not panicked and threw the ball into the ground at JH's feet. That completion and subsequent run may have been the catalyst for the rest of the game. (I wanted Hank after the first series)
It took another failed series to get back to that.
It seems there was an emphasis on staying away from the long game and sticking with the short game.
Then again, the report came out that we are a leader in explosive plays, so UK may have put an emphasis on not allowing those.
No matter which, it looks as though we were able to throw the short game enough that UK kept only 5 in the box. We can block five. Had they stacked the box and the short passes were off, we would be lamenting another loss.
PT did a fine job of running the quick hit RPO. That is what we should have been working the whole season. We got enamored with our great WRs and thought we would just out throw the defense. We can't!

Once UK kept five in the box and apparently JH finally decided to run angry, we prevailed.

DBs still need to learn how to take the correct angles and contain a runner. Pavia will kill us on that.

Totally unrelated observation, but doesn't need a thread.  Just got back from a funeral. Snagette's manager at work passed last week.  Incredible guy.  Just had a graveside service, and I notice this guy walk and stand close to us.  Why did I notice?

Bama baseball cap.  Bama shirt.  Bama belt.  I looked down, yep, Bama tennis shoes.  Then, I saw that he had Bama sunglasses on.

To a funeral.  Good God, what a freakin' putz.  You can't take it out of some people.

Hank actually has a chance to play on Sundays, just needs some seasoning. Thorne might get an opening gig coaching Friday nights like Dad and Grandpa.

I don’t say it sarcastically. I truly think Thorne will be a hell of a coach one day. He does know the game. His processing speed is just too slow to play well consistently.

I couldn’t say that confidently about Hank, given our small sample size. I think he could be better than what we have gotten out of Thorne, though. Sean White/Chris Todd levels of production are all we need out of him until the Deuce gets loose. Or if the new White boy catches on.

All this QB talk means nothing. Clear CHF is going to ride and die with Thorne, no matter what. Barring a terrible injury (wouldn't wish that on any dude), there will be no changes. It's Thorne1 until the final 00:00 of the 2024 season.

I'm afraid you might be right. The UK game will be the game plan from here on out.  Keep PT from panicking and throwing long. Hand off to JH. Win solidly.

Sadly, we won't have the long ball threat any more because we can't trust him to throw it.

Since this thread is more about random observations, and movie quotes, I'll make another one.  There is a site that I go to daily, that has all the mug shots from the day before for Dothan and surrounding counties.  I check it see if any of my clients are on there, which too often they are.  Had one on there for the child perns last week.

I saw an article on the site generally entitled, "Police seeking former Auburn player in shooting".  Curious, and bi, I clicked on it to see a mug shot of Raven Gray, from Enterprise.  I guess technically, he was an Auburn player, but obviously didn't "play".  I saw Gray play both football and basketball several times in his high school career.  Incredibly impressive athlete who played DE.  By the time he got to Auburn, he was 6'4.5" 253.  For whatever reason, he washed out without much, if any contribution to Auburn foosballz.

The piece said he shot into 2 houses.  The police tracked him down, but got into a chase, after which Gray ditched the car and took off on foot.  Still looking.  The caption under his mug shot, said he was currently facing other charges of shooting at a store clerk, and was convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.

I always wonder how someone goes from heralded athlete, to...well....this.  You see soooo many cases of this type thing, and it's head scratching to say the least.
