On this day back in 1975, Jaws was released in theaters.  I don't know if you'd call it a horror film, an action flick, a porno, or all three. But, it changed people's perception of sharks, and their willingness, or lack thereof, to get in the water again.

Jaws, Star Wars, and only a handful of others, are movies I left the theater going, "Dayyyyuummm".  Obviously, cinema has changed night and day over the years, and the "special effects" of the mechanical shark would be laughed at today.  However, I've seen Jaws eleventy skwazillion times, and there are still parts that give me the willies.  Like the opening scene where the girl goes swimming, starts getting jerked under and panicking.  Do. Not. Like.

And when the two guys hooking the wife's holiday roast to a chain, and the guy going in when the dock gets ripped off.  As many times as I've seen that, I'm still thinking, "Swim faster you fat sumbitch." I just know he won't make it this time.

And how iconic are those two notes. Duunn Dun.  That's right, you know what's coming.

Coupla notes.

Was just a little kid when it came out.  Not sure why my parents let me go see it.  That opening scene where the kids are drinking around a fire, making out a little, and then the one chick gets up and runs out of her clothes toward the water - and the boy didn’t even know her name?  I felt the first little tingling in the nethers and decided I could not wait to grow up.

When I read the book later, I discovered that Hooper was banging Chief’s wife, a fact conveniently omitted from the film.

John Williams did not write the iconic theme.  He stole it.  Much as he did Star Wars.

Spielberg named the mechanical shark Bruce (after his lawyer).  Kids don’t get it but Bruce the Shark in Finding Nemo is a reference to Jaws.

The film’s most memorable line was not in the script.  “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” was an ad lib.

How little? I was 8 and that was one of the few movies my dad took the whole family to see.
The other was at the drive in. Double feature; Dumbo and Lobo.

9.

I’d seen a Planet of the Apes marathon at the drive in with the parents before this one.  A couple of herbie movies.  Jungle book.   And 2001.  There was some John Wayne movie he took us to the drive in to see.  But the Duke cursed. Mad Dad cranked the car, drew horns from the rest of the audience. Dad cussed. We left.

True Grit, I bet.  Robert Duvall was the best part of that one.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is my all time John Wayne favorite. Open Range with Duvall as one of the leads takes 1st prize for yours truly.

Spielberg thought Williams was playing a joke on him when he played the themes for him on a piano. Williams told him something to the effect that this is a pirate movie, so I'm using pirate music for it. Funny how that works out.

And for the record, everything musical or artistic is "stolen" or "borrowed" from something else.

I wanna say it was The Cowboys.  If that's a movie at all.  I've never cared about John Wayne and can't say I've ever actually watched any of his movies.

Ya'll fucking crazy.  There's inspiration and there's theft.

Watch this clip which I think is narrated by Pinky from Pinky and the Brain.  NAAARRRFFF.  I don't agree with his summation, but he does provide samples of some of the stolen works.

What Williams did was raw ass theft.  He's plagiarized more material than Joe Biden.

I bet ya'll think Vanilla Ice wrote the music for Ice Ice Baby, too.

I'll bite...even the little British goober in the video somewhat admits they have 2 similar sounding notes in common for an instant and that's it. Even those two notes are in a different key (look at the sheet music he shows), and the works are in different time signatures......but......

Both start with low strings intoning a note, and then the note a half-step above it, and then the motif is repeated a few times. Dvorak's piece repeats it loudly and uses all the lower strings and goes at a quick tempo, building quickly and bringing in the rest of the orchestra before getting to his main theme. He also stays in the same time signature.

Williams starts off with similar notes...but slower, and much softer, and lower -- I'm not even sure if he uses the cellos at all, if they are cellos they are super low. It might be just the double basses at first. And then his insistent rhythm starts with those punching chords at off moments, so you're not even sure what the time signature of the piece is. Williams's sound is insistent and mysterious and somehow both mechanical and not -- pretty much the opposite of what Dvorak does.

Synopsis? This doesn't have enough image and likeness for me to say he stole anything, and apparently the copyright office doesn't think so either. There is actually a better case for the Star Wars one.

The original piece was from like 1827 and not even from the US.  Not sure copyright would be involved.  Who's going to bring the case?

Hey, listen to this great song I created last night!

I used different instruments and EVERYthing!

I also wrote this:

Had my friend Chadley play it for you.  I used a piano and changed the progression of a few notes.  That makes it an original composition.  Maybe I'll win an Oscar or a Grammy for it.

Think that may be kind of Six's point. This is all over the place across all music. Rarely is there a Patient Zero in Music. Progressions, notes, tempo, "inspirations" - are everywhere.

One piece that comes to mind for me that I love is Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks". Of course its based off a very very similar tune from the Mississippi Delta 50 years prior, but they did some of their own original stuff in it with the OG tune being an Inspiration and - to me - created a masterpiece. I think no lesser of them for it.

Just so I am keeping up on the thread:

1. Jon Williams is a terrible composer that's never written anything on his own
2. KISS is still cool
3. Led Zeppelin are hacks

am I leaving ANYTHING out before we storm the Capitol?
