POLK COUNTY, Florida -- A grandson of retired Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden was one of two men killed early Thursday in a car crash in Winter Haven, Fla., according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Taylor Jeffrey Bowden, 23, was a passenger and Rafael Fernandes De Aguiar Valim, 25, was driving when the Mitsubishi left Country Club Road South, apparently crashed through a wooden fence, careened down an embankment and landed in about five feet of water around 2 a.m., according to the Sentinel. Both Bowden and Valim were killed.
Robert Lewis Edwards, 22, of Boca Raton, was riding in the back seat and survived.
Sheriff's investigators said the three had been at a bar in Winter Haven before the crash. Investigators said alcohol is believed to have been involved, though they won't know until they get results of a blood-alcohol test on the driver, and speed was likely a factor.
Taylor Bowden, who graduated from Florida State two weeks ago, was in Winter Haven visiting his mother for the holidays, according to the Tampa Bay Times. His father, Jeff Bowden, is an assistant coach at the University of Akron, where Jeff Bowden's brother Terry is the head coach.
