Pretty sure that makes you a damnyankee.  Although I could be wrong.

That's how I heard it.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

My ancestors may well have been racist, I don't know, but I do know that they did not own anybody.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

I didn't know he could sing?

That depends on how much Scotch I've had to drink; usually goes from speaking in a Scottish brogue to quoting Shakespeares' "Macbeth", "Julius Caesar", and "Henry V" right on to singing popular 18th and 19th century songs.

No slaves.

The only ancestor I know of in the Civil War didn't have slaves either.  My grandmother's grandfather walked from south Alabama to Montgomery to volunteer.  From their he marched to Virginia, was taken as a POW in his first battle, stayed four years in prison camp (outside DC somewhere) and then walked back to south Alabama.  My uncle found some papers on him, written on the bottom of his discharge from prison paper was a note that said he never got paid for the four years he was away from home.

Impossible. The good folks up north say that we're all stupid, racist and all had ancestors that owned slaves. Sorry to bust your bubble.

Could have been Point Lookout; that's where my Gr-Gr-Grandfather had been imprisoned however unlike your ancestor he died and is buried there.  It was an exceedingly horrible place; far worse than the much vilified Andersonville.

My ancestor was an older man when he volunteered for the Cavalry; already had a family and kids and a tobacco farm (but no slaves).  I often wondered precisely what motivated him but humans being humans I'm sure that he had the same feelings and thoughts that I have about an increasingly intrusive and imperious FedGov.

Yea another little tidbit you never hear about Andersonville is that the mortality rate for the guards was the same as that of the prisoners and the prisoner's own Yankee government refused to take them back when the South tried to release them.

The spoils and history go with the victor. It has been that way for centuries!
The schools in the south used to teach open mindedly about the civil war, but the great educators of the federal government have all but erased anything except slavery as the cause!

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I believe slavery was a reason for the war against the states but I believe taxation and state's rights were larger reasons. Lincoln (or his handlers) were smart enough to start molding public opinion and the history books from the very beginning. It makes it look much more palpable and just. I wish we knew the true numbers of slaves in the south vs in the north. Per capita ratio would be interesting. I've seen estimates but I suspect it's impossible to know actual numbers.

I'm glad that the type of slavery we had then is gone. I suspect progress and technology have more to do with that than bullets. And we just switched forms of slavery.

Taxation was the original issue. Slavery was used to sway public opinion against the confederate side of the original taxation conflict. And Lincoln knew that. I mean, after all, who would support a side that had slavery right?? So it has become the war against slavery in modern fairy tale history. I know it's hindsight but if the south had abolished slavery on their own, the north would have lost that trump card and had no real good reason to do what they did from a PR perspective.
