SOUTH BEND - 'Tis the season for poaching in college football recruiting, and doesn't Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly know it.
National title contender Auburn is apparently trying to pry loose what is considered to be ND's top recruit to date, defensive end Stephon Tuitt of Monroe, Ga.
An official visit to Auburn is scheduled for this weekend for someone who is considered to be the best high school senior in Georgia, according to 247sports.com affiliate Blue and Gold Illustrated. Whether the 6-foot-5, 260-pound senior from Monroe Area High School actually follows through is another story.
The ND staff reportedly is far from giving up the battle, and Tuitt has not decommitted.
Already, Notre Dame has lost four members of the 2011 recruiting class - one to Florida (defensive end/linebacker Clay Burton), two to Florida State (offensive lineman Jordan Prestwood and defensive end Aaron Lynch) and one to Michigan (running back Justice Hayes).
At the same time, Kelly has secured two members of other schools' classes - quarterback Everett Golson (North Carolina) and defensive back Bennett Okotcha (Wisconsin). Last year, eight members of ND's 22-man freshman class had originally committed to other schools before ultimately choosing the Irish.
ND's recruiting class of 2011 currently stands at 19. The first day prospects can sign binding letters-of-intent is Feb. 2.
