JAIL IS NOT FUN TINA FEY. UK QB Mike Hartline, arrested for DUI last night after leaving a cab in a fare dispute and being visibly drunk in public, is caught from behind here by a 5'3" reporter in heels at five in the morning. Thus continues the grand Commonwealth tradition of being chased by reporters on any important occasion. Important heads of state in Kentucky's funerals are considered incomplete without the coffin being chased by a news team, preferably one hightailing it as fast and as hard as they can across a cemetery while asking THE PRESSING QUESTIONS NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO KNOW.

Lexington police say University of Kentucky senior quarterback Mike Hartline has been arrested on charges of alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct. Police confirmed Hartline was arrested early Friday morning near the Kentucky campus after authorities responded to a complaint of an altercation. Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts says the incident occurred about 3 a.m. EST. She says  Hartline had been released from the Fayette County Correctional Center.

Hartline, 22, is charged with second-degree disorderly conduct, alcohol intoxication in a public place and failure to notify the department of transportation of an address change, according to police reports.

Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said a report of a disorder was made by neighbors in the 1100 block of Crescent Avenue. When officers arrived, they saw several people standing outside a house at 1103 Crescent Avenue, Roberts said.

According to police reports, Hartline and another UK student, Ashley Kathleen Carnes, reportedly assaulted a woman.

"There was a verbal altercation and, possibly, a physical altercation," Roberts said.

Carnes, 20, was arrested early Friday at the same location, according to police records. Police charged Carnes with alcohol intoxication in a public place, second-degree disorderly conduct and being 18 to 20 years old and using or attempting to use false identification to obtain alcohol.

Carnes is a cheerleader for the university, according to the UK athletics Web site.

The written charge against Hartline says that several people rode home from The Tin Roof bar, 303 South Limestone, when an argument started inside the cab. The argument continued when the group arrived at 1103 Crescent Avenue.

Hartline was "screaming and cursing at the witness," the report says.

Hartline started walking on Crescent Avenue toward University Avenue about 3 a.m. after he saw a police cruiser, according to the police report.

The report says Hartline was "unsteady on his feet," his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol.

The written charge against Carnes says that police stopped her boyfriend as he walked down Crescent Avenue. Carnes was involved in the argument and continued arguing after police stopped her boyfriend, the report says.

Police reported that Carnes smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on her feet and had bloodshot, watery eyes. A woman, Samantha Sheeran, told police that Carnes assaulted her. The police report says that Carnes was carrying identification that belonged to her sister. Carnes told police she had used the ID to enter The Tin Roof.

Sheeran told police that Hartline hit her, causing pain in her lower jaw. The officer took a report but noted that there was no visible injury.

Roberts said officers informed Sheeran that she would need to press charges downtown if she wanted to pursue further action against Hartline.

"Unless an officer is actually present and sees the assault, we cannot make an arrest," Roberts said. "She was advised that that's the course of action she needs to take."

Hartline, whose bond was set at $235, was released Friday morning from the Fayette County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in Fayette District Court.

UK spokesman Tony Neely said that Coach Joker Phillips is aware of the arrest and is gathering information and will address it at the appropriate time.

Hartline is a 6-foot-6, 205-pound senior who has started all 12 games, passing for 3,178 yards and 23 touchdowns with just nine interceptions. UK's record is 6-6 going into its BBVA Compass Bowl game with Pittsburgh on Jan. 8.
