AU FOOTBALL: New NCAA rule limits spring recruiting

Auburn wrapped up its second edition of Tiger Prowl on Thursday — just in time to start obeying the NCAA’s new twist on spring evaluations that will effectively prevent it from ever happening again.

The NCAA passed legislation Thursday that appears as if it were written directly in response to the Tigers’ collaborative limousine treks across the state.

The new amendment to NCAA Bylaw 13.5.1 prevents schools from sending their coaches in “limousines and extravagant buses” to visit schools during the six-week window for spring evaluations, a time where contact between university coaches and student-athletes are banned.

Schools are now also prevented from sending more than two coaches to evaluate talent at one high school. The previous rule only prevented universities from sending more than seven coaches on the road at once, but did not prevent them from traveling all together.

AU FOOTBALL: Tiger Prowl makes stops at Auburn, Opelika High

Coach Troop is well known for his motivational talks, yesterday he delivered one in Auburn's backyard.

When Auburn’s coaches talk about family, it’s typically in a figurative sense.

But when Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper talk about it when it relates to Auburn High, family takes on a literal meaning.

Luper’s son, Cameron Echols, had a strong freshman season and could very well be Auburn High’s quarterback next season. Taylor’s son, Blaise, plans to play on the freshman team next season.

So when the second edition of Tiger Prowl made an early-morning stop at Auburn High on Wednesday, there was no need for AHS coach Tim Carter to provide the five Tigers’ coaches with a painstaking analysis of his future prospects.

“They’re well aware of our children,” Carter said.

AU FOOTBALL: Tiger Prowl visits Valley

Valley High football coach Mike McCombs figured he would be hearing plenty of hoots and hollers from students Tuesday when six Auburn assistant coaches pulled up in a white, stretch Hummer limousine, walked through the school’s front doors and down the hallways.

He didn’t realize that the teachers and administrators would be just as guilty.

“They’re coming down through the halls and you hear a lot of ‘War Eagles’ being screamed down the hallway,” McCombs said. “I don’t know who’s worse: the kids or the faculty.”

The second installment of Tiger Prowl made one of its four stops Tuesday at Valley High, one of the area’s most loaded schools in terms of college prospects.

Auburn upgrades its ride, back on the prowl

Tiger Prowl is back, and everyone, apparently, is invited.

The Auburn coaches have brought back the highly successful recruiting enterprise, and this time they’re doing it in a bus that Metallica would be jealous of.

The tour started today, making various stops in the Mobile area. Tomorrow, the bus will make the rounds in Lee County before ending the day in Montgomery. The BIrmingham area will be hit Wednesday and the week will wrap up in Huntsville on Thursday.

Aside from the big bus, there are plenty of differences between this year’s Tiger Prowl and the inaugural one.

Tigers Unlimited has gotten involved, as there will be charitable engagements held at the end of the day in the locations listed above. Tonight’s will be at Lipscomb Field in Mobile, tomorrow will be at the Renaissance Hotel in Tallapoosa, Wednesday’s end site has yet to be determined and Thursday’s will be at the Madison Commons. Also, coach Gene Chizik, new men’s basketball coach Tony Barbee and women’s basketball coach Nell Fortner will be showing their faces at these events.
