Clayton working hard to gain attention from NFL teams

Clayton wowed at Auburn's Pro Day, and now continues to try and impress NFL Scouts

Zach Clayton’s pre-draft experience has been on the absolute opposite end of the spectrum from former teammates Cam Newton and Nick Fairley.

Instead of publicized, media-only workouts with a professional position coach, the Opelika High grad had sessions in the Hutsell-Rosen Track Complex, nestled into the corner by the equipment shed with his father, Jerry, an Auburn assistant track and field coach.

Instead of appearances on ESPN’s First Take, sitdowns with Jon Gruden or the possibility of gracing a video game cover, Clayton worked four hours a day to improve his agility, balance and other skills that would translate to the next level.

“All I have to do is wake up and work out,” Clayton said. “It’s not like I have to manage time, study, have a social life. I just have to wake up and work out. It’s great. Some would say I’m living the dream.”

A more consistent Newton impresses at Pro Day

Newton was much more impressive in Auburn's Pro-Day completeing 50-60 passes with 3 drops

Cam Newton’s third major workout of the draft season came in a controlled environment, in a stadium he knew, with receivers he was familiar with and with the eyes of the 125 NFL personnel present fixed squarely upon him.

The Heisman winner served as the grand finale for Auburn’s Pro Day at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Tuesday, finishing up the five-hour affair by tossing around 65 passes to former targets such as Darvin Adams, Terrell Zachery and Kodi Burns.

Newton ran the gamut of passing situations — rolling out, three-step drop, seven-step drop, shifting the pocket — threw to all corners of the field — outs, ins, flats, flags, posts, crosses, curls, seams — and only failed to complete about 10 of his balls.

It was an improvement on his 11-for-21 performance at the NFL Combine.

Clayton helps himself with stellar day

Zach Clayton was among several Auburn players that impressed at Auburn's pro-day.

Zach Clayton surprised even himself with how well he fared at Auburn’s Pro Day at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Tuesday.

The Opelika High grad and former Auburn defensive tackle topped the 13-player field in the bench press, lifting the 225-pound bar 27 times.

He finished second in the standing long jump with a mark of 10 feet, finishing just 2 inches behind linebacker Craig Stevens.

He record a vertical jump of 33.5 inches, finishing behind wide receiver Darvin Adams, tight end Gabe McKenzie and safety Zac Etheridge, and tying with Stevens.

In short, he might have played himself into the NFL Draft.

“I’m definitely proud of the times and performances I put up today,” Clayton said.

Perhaps the most surprising mark for Clayton, who weighed in at 299 pounds at the beginning of the day, was his 40-yard dash time.

Newton highlights AU’s Pro Day

After struggling at the combine with accuracy, Newton needs a good showing today to prove it was just unfamiliarity with his receivers.

Cam Newton, surprising as it may sound, still has some questions to answer for NFL scouts.

His physical prowess impressed at the Combine last week, with his 4.59-second 40-yard dash coming in third among quarterbacks present, his 35-inch vertical jump coming in third as well and his 10-foot, 6-inch broad jump leading the field.

But accuracy questions, one of the grey areas in his game he hoped to clear up, was one of the things scouts took away from the Combine, as he completed only 11-of-21 passes in his throwing session with unfamiliar receivers.

“I underestimated the timing aspect of playing quarterback,” Newton told NFL Network. “You had receivers from the SEC, the SWAC, the MAC. … I was somewhat frustrated, but at the same time, I was having fun out there.”
