BCS and Season Reflections

Auburn is looking to improve its Defense for 2012, the new DC Van Gorder should help with that.

It begins with defense 2010 was an anomaly.  But not in the way Bama fans want you think.  There are those who claim Auburn was a one-year wonder, but if that’s the case there are a lot of those over the past 20 years.  Perennial “powerhouses” Ohio State, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma have exactly the same number of national titles as the Tigers in the past two decades.  Where Auburn’s 2010 title differed was in defense.  The Tigers are the only team in the past 20 years to win a title while surrendering an average of more than 20 points per game.  Auburn allowed an average of 24 in 2010.  Fourteen of the last twenty title holders allowed double digits, but only LSU’s 2007 squad (19.9 per game) came close to bumping 20.

Despite deficits, scrappy Tigers continue to fight

The Tigers have continued to scrap all season despite their only winning 10 games.

Kenny Gabriel can’t quite put his finger on what it is about this team.

What allows the Tigers to be a non-factor in a 19-point loss against Mississippi State in Starkville on Jan. 16, get down 19 against the Bulldogs in Auburn about a month later and rally back for a dramatic 3-point win?

How could Auburn get drubbed by 31 by Ole Miss in Oxford on Feb. 16, fall behind the Rebels by 20 in Auburn on Wednesday night, and still pull off another 3-point win in its home finale?

“I have no clue,” Gabriel said after the Tigers’ comeback Wednesday. “I asked (my teammates) after the game in the locker room, ‘Where were we in the first half?’

“And they were like, ‘You know we like to put on a show in the second half.’”

Thoughts – Week 10

Why it really is almost as fun to watch them lose as it is to watch us win:

From Facebook:

“Fire that motherf–ker McElwain.  We won’t score a point against Georgia St!”

From the post game radio show:

(Speaking very slowly) – “Now, I ain’t drunk or nothing so you better not go hanging up on me.  Don’t you hang up on me, ok?  Now, I’ve been a Bama fan since Joe Nameth was playing.  I’ve been a Bama fan since the 60s.  And I love Eli Gold.  I do.  I think he’s been great.  But today?  He was rooting for the other team.  As the Bama play caller, he should be positive for Bama every game.  Every play.  That’s how the Bear would have had him do it.  But today?  He wanted LSU to win.  When #4 had that football in his hands, which he did catch that football, Eli was quick to say he didn’t catch it.  Because he wanted LSU to win.  When #22 had the ball in his hands, Eli was quick to say he didn’t.  I love Eli, but today, he was helping LSU win that football game.”

2010 AU FOOTBALL PREVIEWS: Miles, LSU have some holes to fill in 2010

Editor’s Note: This is the eighth in a series previewing Auburn’s 2010 football opponents. This week: LSU (Oct. 23). The series will run weekly.

Les Miles has won more games (51) in the past five years than any other coach in LSU history over the same amount of time.

He has a national championship ring on his finger and LSU boasts one of the best records against ranked opponents (13-11) among SEC schools since he took over for Nick Saban in 2005.

Despite all the accolades, which include a 51-14 record and four bowl victories in his first five seasons at LSU, Miles sits on the hottest seat in the SEC.

That means every game in 2010 carries added importance for the embattled head coach, whose $3.751 million salary will come under the crosshairs of frustrated Tiger fans after every LSU mistake that can be traced back to Miles.
