Chizik & Burns vs. Roll Ducks & Creepy Uncle Phil
To all of those who were outraged and in shock when Gene Chizik was hired as head football coach – and despite the revisionist history displayed by many, we were legion – it’s time to admit that maybe judging the Auburn coach on his short history of non-success as Iowa State may have been either premature or misguided. Chizik masterfully steered his team, his coaching staff and the fanbase through tumult and drama – both on and off the field – that would have derailed a lesser man. His performance in 2010 was the stuff of legends. No argument that he did an amazing job of keeping the entire Auburn family focused and that by his sheer force of personality coerced every last one of us to go all in.

Kodi hauls in a pass from Cameron Newton, he also caught 2 TD passes and was one of the bright spots in Tuesdays practice.
The score was a lopsided 82-25, but there wasn’t an Auburn player or coach to be found Tuesday night that felt like celebrating as if the victory meant something.

In the span of 365 days, the Tigers went from predicted title contender to projected punching bag. Have the Tigers really fallen that far that fast?
At this time a year ago, the Tigers were the chic pick to win the SEC West. The program was one of the most stable in the league, its head coach Tommy Tuberville holding the second-longest tenure of any active SEC coach. Fresh off a heady performance in the Peach Bowl, sophomore quarterback Kodi Burns was expected to step in flawlessly and give the Tigers a dual quarterback threat that was a cross between Michael Vick and Tom Brady. New offensive coordinator Tony Franklin brought the anticipation of a high-flying, high-scoring offensive juggernaut to complement Auburn’s traditionally stingy defense.

Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has been around the game long enough to know the stakes. He knows that his hiring was not popular among Auburn fans. He understands that the key to Auburn’s future success lies in recruiting. He recognizes that in order to quell the fan unease and to help build recruiting momentum, his first Auburn team has to, at the very least, show improvement.
When Chizik announced last week that Chris Todd had earned the role as Auburn’s starting quarterback he had to know that the decision would have detractors.
Knowing that and also being aware of the urgency of getting off to a positive start, the decision to start Todd is a bold move.
It defies conventional wisdom and sends the clear message that Chizik intends for his team to win, and win now.
