AU HOOPS: Lebo fired after six years without NCAA bid; Jacobs begins search for replacement

Lebo out for Auburn

For moments, when he contemplated the future of Auburn’s basketball program, Jay Jacobs pretended that the big, new, $92.5 million arena sitting outside his window was a mirage.

With or without the biggest symbol of optimism on Auburn’s campus, Jacobs concluded the future of Auburn’s basketball program with Jeff Lebo at the helm was cloudy. The commitment he made to the new building, Jacobs said, had to be matched in his actual commitment to the team that will be playing inside it.

Jacobs’ thought process kept coming back to wins and losses — something Lebo didn’t exactly have in his favor after six years on the job.

“Our No. 1 goal is to win, and we have to win ballgames,” Jacobs said. “I believe that all of our teams should be able to compete for championships, and I believe we have a great opportunity.”

SZVETITZ COLUMN: Chuck Person at Auburn just makes sense

Person a fit for Auburn?

When Jay Jacobs hired Gene Chizik, one point the Auburn athletic director kept coming back to was that Chizik was the best “fit” to lead the Tigers.

Chizik had the drive, the respect of players and a love for Auburn. As far as Jacobs was concerned, it was a no-brainer.

Well, here’s another one: Hire Chuck Person to replace Jeff Lebo.

You want to talk about a good “fit” for Auburn — for its basketball program? It’s Person. The Rifleman himself.

It just makes sense.

He’s an Auburn legend, who loves the university. His No. 45 jersey is one of just five hanging in the rafters of Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. Soon it will move over to the new Auburn Arena.

And Person should be there in person to see it unveiled … as Auburn’s head coach.

And why not?

LSU 31, Auburn 10: There are no silver linings

Lets put Neil in, he can't be any worse. Right?...Right?!?

Lets put Neil in, he can't be any worse. Right?...Right?!?

In the aftermath of another abysmal, soul-wrecking performance, the now 5-3 Auburn Tigers are searching for silver linings in some very dark clouds.

Lets get this out of the way. There is almost nothing positive to take from the 31-10 thrashing delivered by LSU Saturday night. Search if you will, but there are no silver linings. There are no bronze linings. There are no linings of any color, only clouds. Menacing clouds.

If there’s any solace at all to be wrung from the shockingly bad display, it would be that career backup quarterback Neil Caudle came off the bench when the outcome was decided, played with enthusiasm and reckless abandon and made plays that neither starter Chris Todd or designated “wildcat” Kodi Burns have shown any recent capability of making.

Will Chizik win for Auburn this Saturday?

By:  Kevin Strickland

It’s hard to fathom just how much has changed in the last twelve months for the Auburn Tigers.

In the span of 365 days, the Tigers went from predicted title contender to projected punching bag. Have the Tigers really fallen that far that fast?

At this time a year ago, the Tigers were the chic pick to win the SEC West. The program was one of the most stable in the league, its head coach Tommy Tuberville holding the second-longest tenure of any active SEC coach. Fresh off a heady performance in the Peach Bowl, sophomore quarterback Kodi Burns was expected to step in flawlessly and give the Tigers a dual quarterback threat that was a cross between Michael Vick and Tom Brady. New offensive coordinator Tony Franklin brought the anticipation of a high-flying, high-scoring offensive juggernaut to complement Auburn’s traditionally stingy defense.
