5:07 a.m.
Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn wakes up without the benefit of an alarm clock. He doesn’t need one, because the offensive machine that is his brain has a self-timer and turns on automatically.
Why not wake up at 5:00 or 5:15? Because waking up at 5:07 is not what people expect. Malzahn likes to keep them guessing. Tomorrow, he might wake up at 5:12.
His eyes open, he reaches for one of the four pens lined up on his nightstand. On a yellow legal pad, he sketches out the visions that came to him during his sleep. One involves the center turned sideways and snapping the ball directly to a wide receiver.

It seems like its been a long, long time since Auburn football was fun.
New offensive coordinator Gus Malzhan is well on the road to changing that dynamic. In his first two games with the Tigers, Malzhan has helped shred the team’s offensive record books, sent the scoreboard pinwheeling and put the Tigers at as solid a 2-0 as could have possibly been hoped for.
To say that Malzhan’s offense has so far exceeded expectations is like saying Kate Beckinsale is sort of pretty.

It’s hard to fathom just how much has changed in the last twelve months for the Auburn Tigers.
In the span of 365 days, the Tigers went from predicted title contender to projected punching bag. Have the Tigers really fallen that far that fast?

A Big Bite for the 2009 Tigers?

While Tommy Tuberville had one of the most successful tenures in Auburn football history, he left the cupboard bare when it came to talented young players. The attitude that our coach could turn two stars into five stars was flawed. In essence, Tuberville had a knack for finding diamonds in the rough or players that were overlooked by recruiting websites and other schools. Through attrition, the talent level at Auburn dwindled, and it showed on the field. Tuberville’s lazy recruiting tactics and his belief that he could win by finding hidden talents led to his demise. 5-7 and a 36-0 tromping by archrival Alabama ended his career on a sour note.

I always thought I should be treated like a star.

The buzz of the audience quieted and then was silenced as he took a seat at the table. The only sounds were the clicking of cameras and the rustle of cameramen jockeying for a better angle. As he adjusted the microphone, and cleared his throat, grown men shifted nervously in their chairs, fingers poised over their laptop keyboards. As he began to speak, the tension in the room was palpable. Had a decision finally been reached? What would it be? Lives, careers, fates hung in the balance. Stomachs clenched, foreheads beaded with sweat, nerves taut, the audience strained to hear the words they came for. Just say it already, dammit…!!!

When I heard the news on Saturday morning that Auburn had chosen Gene Chizik as its next head coach, I was devastated. How could we have let a future legend like Tuberville go due to a 5 win season, and then replace him with a guy who has a 5 win career as head coach?
This was bad. This was as devastating and catastrophic as September 11th or Pearl Harbor.
I mean…scratch that. A little over the top? Of course it is. What kind of insensitive prick would compare college football to those horrific events in American history? A comment like that could only come from a soulless heartless bastard of epic proportions.
