Cam Newton preps during Spring, he was selected QB1 on Wednesday.
Cameron Newton won’t have to wait until the summer to hear the news everyone knew was going to emerge eventually. He’s Auburn’s starting quarterback heading into the summer.
“After thoroughly evaluating our quarterbacks during spring practice and over the last week, Cam has emerged as our post-spring No. 1 quarterback,” coach Gene Chizik said in a university statement. “Obviously, he will have a lot of work to do over the summer and during two-a-days to continue along this path. We fully expect our other quarterbacks to continue to work hard and compete with Cam during the off-season and into fall camp.”
Newton came into the competition considered to be the front-runner and did nothing, it seemed, to lose that distinction. Players raved about his combination of speed and strength, along with an arm that will bring back the deep ball to Auburn’s offense, wide receiver Darvin Adams said.

A day didn't help to solve the fans quarterback questions for the new season.
Cameron Newton hit Darvin Adams on a frozen rope for his first pass in front of a live Auburn audience Saturday and followed later with a 61-yard pass to put Blue in the red zone.
Neil Caudle had big passes, too. He hit Quindarius Carr for a 70-yard touchdown and was part of three touchdown drives.
Barrett Trotter was just as sharp. He had two long touchdown passes and ran the offense without showing any ill effects of a season lost to a torn ACL.
If you found clarity in Auburn’s quarterback race Saturday, you weren’t at the highest-attended A-Day scrimmage in program history.
The game ended, by the way, with Blue on top, 21-17, after Dontae Aycock’s touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. If the drive would have finished in the third quarter, the points would have been awarded to White team, a perfect summation of just how trivial the final numbers were Saturday.

Sorry, Auburn fans. Cameron Newton has weaknesses and he’s even willing to admit he has them.
The junior-college transfer quarterback, who many expect to be named Auburn’s starting quarterback sometime in the near future, said Monday that he has a few bad habits, none of which escape the eyes of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.
“I’m gaining confidence daily,” Newton said. “That’s due to coach Malzahn every day just working out with all the quarterbacks, watching film myself, seeing my mistakes and trying not to make the same mistake twice.”
Despite Malzahn saying Saturday he hoped to establish a quarterback hierarchy as soon as possible, coach Gene Chizik said Monday there had been no changes since the weekend scrimmage.
Neil Caudle, meanwhile, said Newton and redshirt sophomore Barrett Trotter received added repetitions Monday.

Cameron Newton just held court with reporters for a good 17 minutes.
It was intriguing, insightful and entertaining.
Here are some of the highlights.
(Expectations?)
My No. 1 expectation is to get everyone’s trust on my team. I’m not going to put too much on me. I just want them to have, at the end of spring, to have my coaches and teammates trust me at any point in the game.
(Your competition?)
It’s not nothing. Sometimes, I even forget we’re competing. Neil is such a good guy. We stay next door to each other. He’s a good guy to be around—an up-tempo guy. You never see him with a frown on his face. When I have a question, he’s probably the first person to answer. The competing on the field is not like everyone’s expecting to be the one. We’re still a team every day.
