Cam Calls Malzahn to Talk Up Trotter After Comeback Against Utah State

Cam calls Trotter to show that Auburn love.

It’s not just his giant GQ face—Cam Newton’s million dollar heart is apparently still at Jordan-Hare as well, a fact Gus Malzahn didn’t mind sharing with Kevin Scarbinsky for a “Told You So” column on the Blessed Individual’s critic clobbering NFL debut:

Oh, and Malzahn has a message for anyone that believed Newton was a mercenary done with Auburn after his Pro Day there. Guess who called Malzahn after Barrett Trotter made an impressive debut of his own in Auburn’s opening win over Utah State?

Newton.

“I texted him,” Malzahn said. “He called me.”

Seems that Newton and another former Tiger with the Panthers, Lee Ziemba, had watched their old school’s electric comeback.

“They were excited for us,” Malzahn said. “Cam was very excited for Barrett. I think they talked that day, too.”

Darvin’s dilemma illustrates need for change

Auburn's leading receiver for the past two seasons, Darvin Adams was shut out of the NFL draft

May 1, 2011 — What would former Auburn wide receiver Darvin Adams do differently if he knew in January what he knows today?

Adams, who completed his junior season at Auburn with a national championship on January 10, announced a week after the title game that he would forgo his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

Late Saturday afternoon the draft came to a close.  Seven rounds and a handful of supplemental picks passed without Adams name being called.

Undrafted, Adams now faces an uncertain future made even more bleak by the NFL lockout.

Adams had two solid seasons for Auburn, leading the Tigers in receiving in 2009 with 997 yards and again in  2010 with 963.  Four times in 2010 he cracked the 100-yard mark including a 217-yard performance in the SEC Championship game against South Carolina.

Newton taken No. 1 overall; Fairley goes 13th to Detroit

Cam Newton poses with NFL Commish Roger Goodell after being selected #1 by the Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton could have screamed Thursday night, but he knew that was “not the sane thing to do.”

So the Heisman Trophy winner had tell everyone just how excited he was to be headed to the Carolina Panthers after being the first pick in the NFL Draft in a calm, measured tone.

“I feel great, I’m not going to lie to you. I’m ready to get this show on the road right now,” Newton said in his post-draft press conference. “It’s a warmth in my heart knowing that I’m going to an excellent city and an excellent organization with excellent people around me that’s running the organization

“I’m ready to do some work.”

Newton became the fourth former Tiger to ever go No. 1 in the NFL Draft, after Tucker Frederickson (1965), Bo Jackson (1986) and Aundray Bruce (1988).

Destiny Awaits: Slew of Tigers expected to be picked in NFL Draft

1st round of the Draft starts tonight 8:00 pm ET on ESPN

Cam Newton, according to some reports, is egotistical, can’t command a locker room and lacks the throwing accuracy and playcalling acumen to be an elite NFL quarterback.

Nick Fairley, according to some reports, is a flake who was late to meetings with some NFL executives, blew off meetings with others and is nothing but a one-year wonder on the college level.

Executives, scouts, media members and many other sorts of authoritative voices have had the past three months to pick apart every aspect of the two stars from Auburn’s national championship run, going through their on-field and off-field strengths and weaknesses with a fine-toothed comb before the NFL Draft.

And, if the mock drafts are to be believed, they’ve to the same conclusion basically anybody could have come to just watching the two play last year.
