Trotter looking forward to 1st road game

Trotter is ready for a trip away from home.

Going on the road is no big deal for junior quarterback Barrett Trotter.

Sure, he’s never had to start a game away from home in his Auburn career, but he likes the “us against the world” feeling that comes with playing in a hostile stadium.

“There’s no better feeling knowing that your team went in there with however many guys — 60-70 guys — and pretty much defeated however many thousands of people in there,” Trotter said. “That’s a good feeling.”

Trotter and the No. 21 Tigers get to test that mentality out for the first time this season Saturday, when they travel to take on Clemson.

It will be the first road trip for the Tigers’ bumper crop of true freshmen, who have cut their teeth at Jordan-Hare Stadium over the past two weeks.

Cam Calls Malzahn to Talk Up Trotter After Comeback Against Utah State

Cam calls Trotter to show that Auburn love.

It’s not just his giant GQ face—Cam Newton’s million dollar heart is apparently still at Jordan-Hare as well, a fact Gus Malzahn didn’t mind sharing with Kevin Scarbinsky for a “Told You So” column on the Blessed Individual’s critic clobbering NFL debut:

Oh, and Malzahn has a message for anyone that believed Newton was a mercenary done with Auburn after his Pro Day there. Guess who called Malzahn after Barrett Trotter made an impressive debut of his own in Auburn’s opening win over Utah State?

Newton.

“I texted him,” Malzahn said. “He called me.”

Seems that Newton and another former Tiger with the Panthers, Lee Ziemba, had watched their old school’s electric comeback.

“They were excited for us,” Malzahn said. “Cam was very excited for Barrett. I think they talked that day, too.”

With pressure on, Trotter delivers in 1st start

Barrett Trotter didn’t sleep too well last Friday night.

His stomach wasn’t entirely settled Saturday morning.

But by the time the junior quarterback made his way through Tiger Walk into the locker room and emerged from the tunnel for his first collegiate start, he was fine.

“It was just football from then on out. It was fine,” Trotter said. “I really wasn’t that nervous once I got the pads on.”

Once he got the pads on, Trotter completed 5-of-5 passes in the first half for 88 yards and a 56-yard scoring strike to Emory Blake.

When Auburn got behind 38-28, he completed 6-of-8 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown pass to Philip Lutzenkirchen on the Tigers’ final two drives, the ones that sealed their comeback win.

Overall, Trotter completed 17-of-23 passes for 261 yards and three scores, the sixth-highest single-game yardage total for an Auburn quarterback under offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.

Cooper added to mix at center

Auburn senior offensive lineman Jared Cooper's name has now been added to the rotation for starting center.

Sophomore Blake Burgess and freshman Reese Dismukes have been battling for the starting center job all spring, but offensive line coach Jeff Grimes introduced another name into the fray Monday.

Senior Jared Cooper, the 6-foot-4, 298-pounder from Brewton, who has played mostly a special teams role in 33 career games with the Tigers and has spent most of the spring at left guard.

“At this point, there are so many different variables and spring ball is the chance to find out who can do what different things,” Grimes said. “At the end of the day, what you want to do is get you best five guys on the field and so sometimes you might have to move some guys around to make that happen. So I’m just trying to find out who can do what.”
