Newton named QB1 heading into summer

Cam Newton preps during Spring, he was selected QB1 on Wednesday.

Cameron Newton won’t have to wait until the summer to hear the news everyone knew was going to emerge eventually. He’s Auburn’s starting quarterback heading into the summer.

“After thoroughly evaluating our quarterbacks during spring practice and over the last week, Cam has emerged as our post-spring No. 1 quarterback,” coach Gene Chizik said in a university statement. “Obviously, he will have a lot of work to do over the summer and during two-a-days to continue along this path. We fully expect our other quarterbacks to continue to work hard and compete with Cam during the off-season and into fall camp.”

Newton came into the competition considered to be the front-runner and did nothing, it seemed, to lose that distinction. Players raved about his combination of speed and strength, along with an arm that will bring back the deep ball to Auburn’s offense, wide receiver Darvin Adams said.

AU FOOTBALL: What have we learned after 15 spring practices?

140 something days till the start of the season...can you dig it?

More than four months separate today from Sept. 4, when Auburn opens its 2010 season with Arkansas State.

Fifteen spring practices certainly made what many expect to be a much-improved season seem closer, but any answers that may have arisen from those practices could very well be wiped away with what transpires in August.

Alas, the Opelika-Auburn News posed five burning questions before the spring, and now it’s time to attempt to answer them.

1. Who will be the quarterback?
On the surface, Auburn is no closer toward answering this question than it was ever since Cameron Newton signed with the Tigers one day before the Outback Bowl.

From what transpired over 15 critical practices, though, there’s no reason to expect anyone but Newton under center when the season starts.

AU FOOTBALL: Still a four-way battle at quarterback with spring practice complete

Spring did nothing to answer the QB question. Who will it be Trotter, Caudle, Newton, or Moseley?

Gene Chizik was asked a hypothetical question Monday.

For a man who rarely ventures into this territory, it was a stretch to expect a clear-cut answer.

Considering that it dealt with Auburn’s open quarterback battle, there was a better chance of a blizzard hitting Lee County than Chizik answering it in a way that would provide any kind of clarity about the second consecutive competition that will drag through the summer.

If Auburn’s first game were tomorrow, would Chizik be comfortable with whomever is the current front-runner?

“I don’t know that I could go out on that limb and say that,” Chizik said. “I think there’s some great competition going on in the position and thank God we don’t have to name him tomorrow.

“We need more time.”

SZVETITZ COLUMN: Don’t give up on Newton just yet

Cam Newton makes his debut at the 2010 Auburn A day game.

The first time Cameron Newton dropped back to pass, he was sacked.

Not the start he –— or any of the 63, 217 fans in Jordan-Hare Stadium — wanted to see.

Maybe he isn’t made of steel.

Well, it wasn’t officially a sack. I mean, Antoine Carter never really touched him, let alone brought him to the ground. Maybe, Newton could have spun out of it, tucked the ball and flew into the end zone.

Maybe.

Or, maybe he would have been dropped to the Pat Dye Field turf like a 6-foot-6 sack of potatoes.

Maybe.

Who knows?

Reading too much into what would have happened on that play would be like trying to figure out a fortune cookie. It’s silly.

And, really, who cares?
