Countdown to Football

35 Days

“Dude!  Come check this out!  Someone just posted 27 pictures of what looks like could maybe possibly be a serious or not serious NCAA violation by our rival!”

“Hang on, man!  You first have to come look at this news story about a rumor of a secret source speaking through a 5th party to a local call-in radio show about a player being purchased for an exorbitant amount of money!”

The reactions to these statements are always the same.  Excitement leads to expectations, and when those expectations aren’t met immediately, vitriolic hate becomes the fuel for conversation.

By no means am I about to speak about why the NCAA should get rid of its rule book and let universities fight to the death to obtain the signatures of high school athletes.  I’m also not going to explain why we should ignore the current allegations against numerous schools in the NCAA.  I’m not even going to really blame the unofficial investigators who stumble upon this information.

Auburn Baseball Wall of Fame

On Feb. 27, 2010, four of Auburn Tigers baseball’s greats were honored with their induction into the Auburn Baseball Wall of Fame. Tim Hudson, Bo Jackson, Gregg Olson and Frank Thomas were part of the inaugural class

Tim Hudson, from Phenix City, was a two-year letter winner (1996-97) at Auburn and was named the 1997 Rotary Smith Award Winner as the top player in college baseball. In 1997 he went 15-2 with a 2.97 ERA on the mound while also hitting .396 as the Tigers tied the school record for wins (50) and advanced to the College World Series for the fourth time in school history. His 15 wins led the nation and he was named a consensus All-America and the SEC Player of the Year. A sixth-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in 1997, he is a two-time All-Star (1999 and 2004) and is entering his 12th major league season and sixth with the Atlanta Braves.

AU BASEBALL: Morris signs with Brewers

We bid you good luck, Mr. Morris

As expected, Hunter Morris’ career at Auburn is over.

Morris inked a contract earlier this week with the Milwaukee Brewers, who drafted him in the fourth round of last week’s Major League Baseball Draft. Morris, who will report to the Brewers’ lower-A affiliate, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, received a $218,700 signing bonus, according to Baseball America.

Morris, who was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s first-team All-America team Wednesday, led the SEC in home runs (23), RBI (76), slugging (.743) and total bases (202) while helping Auburn win the SEC Western Division championship for the first time since 1995. His totals for home runs and total bases marked the most in school history, and his 105 hits were the third most by an Auburn player during a single season.

AU BASEBALL: Tigers could face significant rebuilding project in 2011

It took one of the most successful seasons in program history to bring back the crowds Auburn envisioned when it revamped Plainsman Park 15 years ago.

Bringing them back through the early part of 2011 shouldn’t be hard. Keeping them there after potentially losing one-third of this season’s contributing players will be tougher.

Just one day after the Tigers’ season came to a close against Clemson, coach John Pawlowski saw his roster gutted round by round in the MLB Draft.

A SEC-record 11 Tigers heard their name called this past week and the majority are likely to sign, leaving Pawlowski with a potential rebuilding project that rivals, or perhaps surpasses, what he faced as a new coach two years ago.

Two of Auburn’s draftees, senior closer Austin Hubbard and catcher Ryan Jenkins, are guaranteed departures. Junior sluggers Hunter Morris and Trent Mummey, both of whom were selected in the fourth round, are near-locks to sign and end their Auburn careers.
