Tigers shut down Tide in Capital City Classic

The Tigers claim their 3rd Straight Capital City Classic.

MONTGOMERY – Auburn made it three for three against rival Alabama in the Capital City Classic on Tuesday night.

And this time, the Tigers did it with pitching.

Four Auburn pitchers combined to hold Alabama to one run on four hits, striking out six and picking up a 2-1 win in front of 7,492 fans at Riverwalk Stadium.

The No. 24 Tigers (12-5) won the first two editions the annual Capital City Classic, 8-7 and 8-6.

“Runs were tough to come by from both sides,” Auburn coach John Pawlowski said. “Every guy that went out there was very tough, and I was very pleased with what our guys did.”

Auburn softball faces tall task in Tuscaloosa

The Lady Tigers face a tough test against the Tide

Kyndall White grew up watching Alabama play far more often than she watched Auburn.

The Tigers’ senior from Pinson said that’s what happens when you come from a family of Crimson Tide fans.

“They’ve converted to Auburn softball,” White said. “But they’re still really big football fans. As long as they cheer for me when it comes to softball, that’s fine.”

Since White switched to the other side of the divide and suited up for the Tigers, she hasn’t had the experience of beating the team she grew up watching.

In fact, nobody on the Tigers’ roster knows what it’s like to beat Alabama. Auburn’s last win against the Tide came in 2006.

Alabama takes a 13-game winning streak against the Tigers into today’s doubleheader in Tuscaloosa, which starts at 3 p.m. and will be televised on CSS.

Tigers set for Tide in Classic

Iron Baseball, Auburn set to play Alabma in tonights Capital City Classic

Cory Luckie had a suggestion for Zach Blatt before the junior reliever left the bullpen to take the mound in the eighth inning against Arizona State on Sunday.

“He said, ‘It’s about time we get another replay of the Alabama game,’ from my freshman year,” Blatt said. “He said, ‘Can you go out and do that for us this time?’”

Blatt, an Opelika native, pitched two scoreless innings against the Tide in the inaugural Capital City Classic in Montgomery two years ago, striking out two and earning his first collegiate win in his third college outing as Auburn came back to beat Alabama, 8-7.

Sunday, Blatt threw two more scoreless innings, striking out three and earning the first win of his junior year as the Tigers came back to beat the seventh-ranked Sun Devils, 10-8, and avoid a sweep.

Excuses, justifications and spin in response to poisoning of Toomer’s Corner oaks  fail to meet basic standards of common sense

It’s been a few days now since news first broke that the hallowed oaks at Toomer’s Corner in Auburn had been poisoned.  The alleged perpetrator of this vile act has been caught and incarcerated. The initial rush of outrage has subsided somewhat as both Auburn and Alabama fans settle into a ‘what now?’ mode.

Amid calls for peace from the governor and the presidents of both universities, the average Alabama fan apparently feels that enough time has passed that they can shed the veil of faux sympathy and express some of their real thoughts and feelings.

Chief among those is the sentiment that “they are just trees and can be replaced.”
