WORK IN PROGRESS: A-Day reveals Tigers’ inexperience

"Don't read to much into A-Day" - Coach Chizik

Gene Chizik had a message for the 53,290 fans who congregated at Jordan-Hare Stadium to watch the White defense team score 31 more confusingly calculated points than the Blue offense team on A-Day on Saturday.

Don’t read too much into it, Chizik relayed.

“(The fans) really need to study our scoring system,” Chizik said with a wry smile. “I am not sure about it either. Here is what you need to take away from it: Don’t read too deeply into the score.”

White beat Blue, 63-32, on Saturday, with the bulk of its scoring coming from five tackles for a loss (at 2 points each), seven sacks (each counting for 4 points) and a fumble recovery by Drew Cole that netted 5.

Waiting game not always fun for big-time recruits

Waiting for a postion to open is not always easy. “It was a learning experience for me. I had to wait my turn,” -Dee Ford

At Leroy High, everything came easily for Clint Moseley.

Win a state title — or two or three — on the football team, win another one — or two — on the baseball diamond, be named Mr. Football senior year, earn the adoration of everyone at the school and become basically the biggest thing happening in a town about 4 percent the size of Auburn University.

“I’d never been through adversity,” Moseley said. “We won state every year I played, I was just so spoiled and never really had to run and work out and just didn’t have a clue, honestly.

“Didn’t have a clue what was ahead of me.”

Moseley went from big man on campus to one of a mass of players contracted to the university to play football.

AU FOOTBALL: Carr stands out in big day

Mr. Carr goes to the endzone.

Quindarius Carr caught two passes all of last season.

Saturday, during A-Day, he caught four for 152 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown catch and run.

Not a bad way to state your case for playing time next season, especially when Auburn’s looking for a third wide receiver who can take some pressure off Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery.

It’s also not a bad way to earn the Lionel James Offensive MVP Award, which he also snagged Saturday.

“I finally had the opportunity to showcase my skills and have fun with my teammates,” Carr said.

And no group was having more fun Saturday than the Auburn wide receivers — a group that head coach Gene Chizik called one of the most improved this spring.

AU FOOTBALL: Coaches want more from McNeil, Freeman

Coaches want the bull seeing red.

While ambiguous and sometimes puzzling, Gene Chizik’s player interview policy typically doesn’t exclude players who have impressed him with on-field accolades.

So when he was asked Monday if the opposite conclusion should be drawn regarding safety Mike McNeil and linebacker Eltoro Freeman — both of whom haven’t been made available after all 12 of Auburn’s spring practices to date — Chizik delivered a somewhat telling, but still-ambiguous response.

“I don’t know what you want to read into,” Chizik said. “I don’t know if you should or shouldn’t, but they both need to step it up.”

McNeil is coming off a lost season, the result of a broken leg he suffered last spring. Freeman is one year removed from an up-and-down debut season that had as many highlights as headaches.
