 Rashaan Evans, a five-star linebacker from Auburn High School, knew there would be some unhappy people when he signed with Alabama.

But he didn't expect this.
"It's getting worse," Evans told TideSports.com. "Someone actually put out an article about my family's business telling all Auburn fans not to go there. We are going to eventually start losing money. People are telling restaurants in the town not to serve us."

While he said support from Alabama fans "has been by far the greatest," the negative feedback he is getting on social media has been nasty.

"People on Instagram are telling me how they hope I tear my ACL in game one," Evans said. "They will laugh when I do. They are saying my family is horrible and how they didn't raise me right. It's just crazy."

Thanks to Andrew Bone & AL.com's collaborative efforts, this guy is getting 100x worse than that tweet. He didn't threaten him. He didn't tell him to kill himself. He didn't do anything anywhere near as bad as what Bama fans did to our recruits, or EVEN THEIR OWN PLAYERS.

Opinion:  If an adult attempts to hurt a young man or his family because of his choice — his choice — of colleges, that adult is a lowlife and a fool.

Fact:  Many — not all, but many — Auburn fans are trying to hurt Rashaan Evans and his family via the internet because of his choice to attend Alabama.

Over the years we’ve done this site, we’ve seen fans from various schools rip players for signing with a rival school, for backing out of a commitment, for missing a kick in a big game, etc.  When that happens, I give you my take which is typically: “Those fans are fools.”

Inevitably the response is, “You hate fans!”  So just to be clear right up front… no, this writer doesn’t hate fans.  I hate the stupid fans.  Hate.  Can’t stand.  Despise.  Look down upon.  Mock.

Well, today it’s Auburn’s stupid fans who need a trip to the woodshed.  Since Evans — who attended Auburn High School — signed with Alabama last week, he and his family have been absolutely destroyed on Twitter.  (Shocking, I know, considering the fact that Twitter is the best avenue running for anonymous jackasses to spew hate from the safety of their own mother’s basement.)  Worse, the addresses of the family’s home and business have been posted online.

According to Evans himself:

“It’s getting worse.  Someone actually put out an article about my family’s business telling all Auburn fans not to go there.  We are going to eventually start losing money.  People are telling restaurants in the town not to serve us…

Now, I could spin this off into my usual views on Twitter — a tool which simultaneously ramps up rage, lowers our national IQ, and disseminates false information — and how it will eventually be the downfall of our already running-on-borrowed-time Republic, but we’ll save that for another day.

So let’s just back to the stupidity of the Auburn fanbase.  Evans’ father attended Auburn.  He was the top running back in the state of Alabama in 1982 and he chose to play for the Tigers over the Tide.  Now, thirty years on, the AU fanbase is trying to destroy that same man’s business.

Guess there’s a 30-year statute of limitations on loyalty down on the Plains.

The good news in all of this is that Auburn fans — appropriately enough — are drawing attention from all over the nation because of their irrational response to this particular teenager choosing his college.  Act like fools, expect America to cover your foolishness.  You asked for it.

But before any Tiger fan can post an insult, mention Harvey Updyke or type the letters “WDE!,” let me make one other thing clear — it’s not just Auburn fans who make asses of themselves in the Yellowhammer State.  Alabama fans have also been ugly when in-state players have chosen to play for the Tigers over the Tide.

From threatening teenagers to poisoning trees — Good Lord, what a fool Updyke was — the Iron Bowl rivalry is the worst in the United States.  You read that right.  Not the best, the worst.

I’ve lived in Columbus, Ohio and experienced Ohio State/Michigan.  I’ve lived in the Tarheel State and witnessed North Carolina/Duke.  Fans of those schools don’t like the other school, but the level of pure, nasty hate in those rivalries can’t match the vile stuff that’s tied each year to the Alabama/Auburn rivalry.  Sadly, Tigers versus Tide takes first prize for lunacy.

Here’s guessing that the majority of the people who’ve ruined the UA/AU rivalry with their over-the-top theatrics — you know, the ones who’ve made Paul Finebaum rich — never even attended one of those two schools in the first place.  They’re almost certainly sidewalk alums.  Think about it.  No one smart enough to attend a university would also be so daffy as to threaten a recruit’s family business.

But, oh, how those sidewalk alums do make their schools look bad.  Year after year and month after month.  Quick — think of all the nonsense that’s surrounded the Iron Bowl rivalry in recent years.  That includes all of the allegations of illegal activity that the schools’ fans toss at one another.  From Cam Newton to T-Town Menswear, rival fans are typically the ones playing amateur sleuth and pushing this stuff to the media.  (The irony is that both schools have been caught cheating so many times it’s hard to keep count on which number is higher — NCAA probations or national championships?)

Now try to think of the worst stories from Michigan/OSU or Duke/UNC.  Hell, toss in Texas/Texas A&M, for that matter.  No other rivalry in America runs as ugly as Alabama/Auburn.  None even come close.  No fans bring so much negative attention to their schools as those fans of Alabama and Auburn.

It’s a damn shame, but it’s absolutely true.

So congratulations nitwittish Auburn fans.  You’re the asses who are making a mockery of the Iron Bowl rivalry, your school and your state today.  Way to go.

In the days since publicly choosing Alabama over Auburn, linebacker Rashaan Evans says he has been on the receiving end of negative and hurtful comments from angry Auburn fans both on the web and in person.

After watching his son deal with the public criticism from fans of the team he once played for, Rashaan's father Alan Evans said he and his family have been disappointed with the treatment they've received both on the Internet and in their hometown.

"It's kind of disturbing to know that it's such a thin line between love and hate," Alan said. "A couple weeks ago before he made his decision, Auburn was handing him the keys to the kingdom when they thought he was a lock. Now they want to crucify Rashaan and his family because he wanted to do what he thought was best for him and his future."

Among the most troubling instances of public backlash so far has been directed not simply at Rashaan, but at the family as a whole, Alan Evans said, including their family-owned Corner Market store in Auburn.

"I don't spend time on message boards but I was made aware by some friends of posts on several Auburn message boards calling for a boycott of our business," he said. "It's shocking and hurtful to find out people who used to support us have decided to try and hurt us simply because our son chose to attend a different school than the one they root for."

Evans also said he has heard and disagrees with comments from Auburn fans and recruits saying that fan backlash is a normal part of the recruiting experience.

"I don't agree with the people who say this kind of thing comes with the territory," he said. "I understand that fans say outrageous things to almost every high-profile recruit, but very rarely do they have to endure the things that Rashaan is going through. They aren't just saying negative things to him on Twitter. They are trying to hurt him and his family by having a negative impact on our livelihood.

"I understand that people in this state take football very seriously and that's part of what makes it exciting, but when you start trying to hurt other people because of this game, you need to take a step back and think about what's going on. I guess the thing I would ask most of the people writing these hurtful things is how would you feel if this were your child? Why do you feel the need to heap all this negativity onto a young man who is just beginning his life? I think if people asked themselves those questions, they might think twice before writing some of these things they've written. You can do a lot of harm with the words you put out there and I hope people think about that."

Evans said the silver lining of the situation has been the outpouring of support from the Alabama community.

"I'm so glad that where thousands of Auburn fans have thrown my family away and ridiculed and scandalized our name, called us everything but a child of God, thousands of Alabama fans have embraced us and welcomed us to the Capstone," he said. "They have called us and let us know personally that they stand behind Rashaan and his family and awaiting his arrival to the University of Alabama."

Are we really supposed to believe that this was a "night before signing day" decision? I don't believe that it was. But, if it was, a lot of this could have been prevented with better planning.

Don't play the team you didn't choose and then rub it in their face on the facebook. That would be a good start. Alan was trying to provoke AU fans. He knows it and we know it.

I'm over it. Let us stop allowing him to even attempt becoming relevant.
