PS3 Surprise
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:00:43 AM »
This may be old news to some of you, but fuck it.

I just found PS3 Media Server and it has changed my life.  Well, not really, but it is pretty fucking cool.

Download that little piece of software, connect your computer to your PS3 (I'm got my PC and PS3 sharing a wireless internet connection) and you can access any file on your PC with your PS3.

Movies and music played through your television without a disc.

This is glorious.

Buddy of mine has this.  Absolutely incredible the PS3 is.  What's even more impressive is that the PS3 hasn't been reached its potential yet (unlike another popular gaming console).

Glad I became a school teacher.  I love not having cool technology like this.

You'll evolve out of it.

I taught for several years before I realized I was starving to death.

The only way I would go back now would be into the two-year system.  You can make a decent living there.

Welcome to the party Wes. Too bad you were a dumbass and overlooked the previous conversations about this when it has come up. :vn:

You downloaded the software by itself or in a system update? It was included in a system update I made in my PS3 over a year ago. It works pretty well and easily with Windows. For you Mac users, there is a way to stream your media to the PS3, but I think it takes a little more fancy footwork to get that going, but there are websites that tell you how to do it.

Basically for Windows based computers, all you have to do is go to each computer and setup Windows Media to allow access to your home network. Then the PS3, as long as it is connected to your home network also, will automatically find those computers. For the videos, you have to make sure it is in the right .avi format or in MPEG4 format for them to play on the PS3. Whenever we are reviewing pictures we have just taken, we prefer using the PS3 to view them on the HD big screen rather than on the computer screen. If you don't want to stream because maybe your wireless network is a little quirky, you can also just connect an external hard drive or storage device to the PS3 via its USB connections and watch straight from the external storage device or copy it over to the PS3's hard drive.

FYI...the movie studios are getting very, very serious about illegally downloading Blu-Ray movies and then using a certain free program that is out there to convert them so that the PS3 will play them in HD. Not that I am saying I have ever participated. I just know a friend who got a letter from his ISP saying that Columbia Pictures had traced an illegal bit torrent download of Tropic Thunder back to his account. My friend had downloaded probably over 100 regular DVDs without a problem, but was warned by his ISP not long after he started downloading Blu-Ray movies.

I thought about it, have a degree for it, decided against it....and yes the first few years you will starve to death.  Now if I could convince the wife to either go back and get a masters or get a degree in something totally different.

Download it where?

I want this info.

Go here:  http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

Install the software on your PC.  Once you install the software and choose which media folders you want to share, check your PS3 menu under either the "Audio" or "Video" sub-menu and you'll see either: 1) "Search for Media Servers" or 2) "<Insert whatever your PC name is here>".

Then just scroll through your media folders and play whatever you want.

Craig, I now know that WMP11 can do this, but the PS3 Media Server automatically converts/translates any file you have into PS3-friendly format on the fly.

Oh, okay. I was wondering what you were talking about. Most of the files I have are already in the correct format, but when I do need to convert I use a program called WinAVI. Having a program that will do that in the fly sounds really cool though and I might try this out.

Hey Wes, for some reason today, my PS3 and my desktop would not communicate with each other, even though all my settings were correct. Not that first time that is happened. My wife had just taken some pictures of our niece and nephew, uploaded them to the desktop, then we wanted to look at them on the HDTV.

Since I could not get the PS3 and WMP11 on my desktop to talk, I downloaded this program, and viola, it worked like a charm. I also noticed all the different video settings that were pretty cool for converting on the fly. Great find man.

Please allow me to state for the record that this media server deal is the baddest of bad assity.

Videos, music, movies (of all kinds) streamed through the PS3 at will.

No longer forced to balance the laptop while perusing, say, Raven.  Click, click, clicktity fucking click, motherfucker.   It's all up there on the great big 60".   Yeah, I said it.  The superocity factor cannot be measured.

Of course I meant Raven Symone, you know.  That's So Raven?  So my kids can watch it at will?

Good to hear that is solved your issue.  It's a nifty little piece of software.
