I-70 Colorado... Any advice?

I-70 Colorado... Any advice?
« on: June 08, 2012, 11:10:47 AM »
Taking a trip with my old man and few other old timer buddies of his during the first 2 weeks of November for Elk Season.  Going to be staying near the Uncompahgre National Forest (about an hour south of Grand Juntion) but I've never been to Colorado and really don't know when I'll ever be back.  Being as how I am not a rich man nor enjoying the fruits of my labor in retirement like my dad I can't afford to spend the entire 14 days up there but I want to get the most out of the 7-8 I will be.

Been thinking about flying into Denver rather than GJ and taking a day rental to meander west along I-70 just to take it all in.  Anyone here live in CO or driven I-70?  Would it be worth the extra effort/4+ hour drive alone... and are driving conditions typically a concern that time year?

Either no one has been to Colorado or no one likes you.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

I've made the drive on I-70 from Denver to Vail and Breckenridge a couple of times.  That's a solid 2 hour drive and it's not even halfway to Grand Junction.  If you make that drive I'd plan on at least 5 hours, and that's if it's not snowing.

They keep the interstate pretty well groomed, but that time of year you are just as likely to have weather in the 50's and 60's as you are a foot of snow.  The weather is crazy out there.

Another option would be to fly to Eagle Airport in Vail (EGE) and drive from there.  That would shave 2-3 hours off of your drive and still give you a chance to drive through some of the scenic areas.

i have driven this route on several occasions ...as our resident ginger said...ski towns dot the path.  you should see fall color.  to really appreciate the area it is best to have a few days...lots of hiking...ski towns etc... if your rental is a 4 banger have fun.

my advice, take the flight to grand junction and spend the time elk hunting.  i don't know if you have gone before but they are not like white tail at every corner.
