General Sports Topic...Dynasties
« on: December 09, 2011, 10:46:35 AM »
The story of the Chris Paul trade to the Lakers being blocked got me thinking about how I haven't been a big fan of this move towards parity in sports.  The NFL has probably done the best job of achieving that goal with seemingly a new participant in the Super Bowl every year.  Many of you may be too young to remember but I loved hating the Steelers in the 70's.  I wanted Magic, Kareem and Worthy to die in a fire or at the very least, get hammered by Bird, McHale & Parrish by 40 every game.  I wanted Steinbrenner to choke on a dick.

I miss the days of players being associated with one franchise for most of their careers.  Didn't like them at all but you had to respect Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Dave Concepcion and the Big Red Machine.  Garvey, Cey, Russell, Reggie Smith...Dodger Blue.  Grew up loving the Cowboys under Landry with Staubach and Drew Pearson and Calvin Hill etc.  Hated that team with Emmit and the band of thugs.  Even college football has pushed the parity issue by limiting scholarships to 85.  Now Appalatchy State can bitch slap Meat Chicken in any given year.

I think sports in general needs dynasties.  They need franchises that fans either love or hate with every fiber of their being.  Baseball needs the Yankees.  The NFL needs Terry Bradshaw and the Steelers.  Golf needs Tiger back on top.  Even Nascar has a team that's won 5 out the last 6 but you wouldn't know Jimmy Johnson if he walked through your door.  They need a Dale Earnhart. I want to Robert Parrish to block Kareem's sky hook as time runs out for the championship.

You can keep a wooden stake in your trunk
On the off-chance that the fairy tales ain't bunk
And Imma keep a bottle of that funk
To get motel parking lot, balcony crunk.

I like dynasties but not when they are bought (Yankees). Basically buying players that are already superstars versus building a team methodically with the right talent and intuition and watching it blossom (Braves Early 90's). Unfortunately the Lakers, Phillies, Celtics, Eagles and Yankees have all done the 1st one recently.

If Drew Bledsoe doesn't get injured in 2001, Tom Brady doesn't come in off the bench.  Would the Patriots 2000s dynasty have happened?

See, I actually like the way the Patriots do it. They develop players.

The only reason I don't like them is because I was working at a school in Boston from 2002 until 2004, and got sick of hearing everything Patriots.  And I wanted Stephen Davis to win a ring.

One team that appears to be heading towards dynasty status (And dynasty these days is probably more like a 2-3 year run) is the Packers.  Rogers is scary good and they won last year with half the team on injured reserve.

They had a lot of free agent pickups mixed in there over the years too.  Moss, Welker, Dillon, Harrison, Ochocinco, Evans

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.
