Auburn coach Gene Chizik is receiving a raise of more than $1 million a year under a new contract that was negotiated after the Tigers won the BCS national championship in January.

Chizik will earn $3.5 million annually. His contract was extended through the 2015 season. He can earn $4.5 million with incentives, which includes winning another national title.

Chizik is 22-5 in two seasons at Auburn.

Chizik earned approximately $2.2 million annually under his old contract. Details of the new contract will be released by the university later.

Chizik appears to be the eighth highest-paid coach in the nation, behind Alabama's Nick Saban, Texas' Mack Brown, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Southern California's Lane Kiffin, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, LSU's Les Miles and Arkansas' Bobby Petrino.

Chizik thanked the Auburn administration.

"I deeply appreciate their commitment to me and to the future of Auburn football," Chizik said in a a statement. "he success that we've accomplished in the past two seasons has been possible because of the collective efforts of the football coaches and staff, players, our administration and the entire Auburn Family.  We will continue to work tirelessly to build the foundation of the Auburn football program so that we can compete for championships regularly."

Athletics Director Jay Jacobs showed his support.

"I am pleased to announce a well-deserved raise and contract extension for Coach Chizik," Jacobs said in a statement. "We believe that we have the best coach in college football.  More importantly, Coach Chizik is a great mentor to our student-athletes, he represents Auburn with class and integrity in all that he does, and he is an outstanding ambassador for Auburn University."

"We will continue to provide Coach Chizik and our football program the resources needed to build a strong foundation so that we can consistently compete for championships in the future," Jacobs said. "We look forward to Coach Chizik being our coach at Auburn for a long, long time."

All of Auburn's assistant coaches received raises as well. Auburn has not released details of those contracts yet.

Have no issues with raises. I mean, they were the best in the land in year 2. Only 2 years removed from a debacle and 5-7. Yeah, they deserve it I think.

Our administration has to be the dumbest in all of college football.  How can they hand out this type of money when the hammer is already on the downswing?

Bottom line, I think the guy deserves it simply for winning the MNC.  Untold amounts of money were made for AU because of that and he assmbled the team/staff that got them there and I'm glad the assistants got bumped too.  There's still a part of me that's cautious about what's gong to happen this season with what is really a complete overhaul.  I think most reasonable Auburn fans will realize what the situation is and will not have their expectations too high.  But this could be a tough season and you know the critics will descend like buzzards on a dead cow after the first loss.

Read this in the ESPN article:

Chizik does not have an agent, but worked on the deal with Birmingham attorney Russ Campbell.

I did not know that - but I must say that I am impressed... I like that a lot.  He is his own man.

And what a man he is...

His Agent was Jimmy Sexton. He fired him either before he accepted the job or before they started working out the details of his pay.  I remember being extremely fucking happy that he let that slimball go, lesson learned by the AU AD.

In today's climate, yeah.  In a reasonable world...not so much.  It is the way of college football today.  Take over a shitty program and lose like everybody expects and you're fired in 3 years.  Take over a program like Auburn, win in 2 years, and they back a brinks truck up to your front door.  "Underachieve" the next 3 years, and they forget all about the championship, and fire your ass.  Nobody in CFB can think in the long term or look at the big picture, and everybody is shocked when a coach like Tressell tries to sweep some bullshit under the rug so he can play with his best players on the field.  Then he's called everything but a child of God, and treated as if he sets puppies and kittens on fire because he tried to cover up an act by a few of his players that was neither immoral or illegal, but an administrative violation created by the NCAA.   I love CFB, and I admire what Chiz did.  I like how he does it, and he deserved something.  Just quite frustrated with the overall state of CFB.

Russ Campbell is Chizik's agent.  Why they don't identify him as such in the article, who knows.  Russ is also Bobby Petrino's agent, FWIW.
